Hello, and welcome back to
City Lifestyle with Angie Burns.
(00:45):
Thank you for joining us.
We are here today with the owner of Lee
Graves Salon in Plano, Ms.
Carrie Graves.
Thank you for joining us.
Thank you so much for having me.
Absolutely, well, we're gonna start by
having you just introduce yourself and
the salon to our viewers and listeners
because it is a hidden gem in Plano.
So a lot of people may not know where you
(01:05):
are and what all y'all do,
so go ahead and take it away.
Okay, great.
Well, I am Carrie Graves,
owner of Lee Graves Salon.
We are in the heart of Willow Bend area.
We're right across
from the Willow Bend Mall.
We have a 21 stylist salon.
We have about 3,500 square foot.
We do hair, makeup, bridal,
(01:28):
lashes, nails, you name it.
We also have a boutique, yes.
Oh my gosh, and your
boutique is so adorable.
Thank you.
I did not know about the boutique aspect
when I first came in.
I just knew it was the glam squad was
there and to go in to get your hair done,
your makeup done, your nails, your
eyelashes, all the things.
But then I walk in and there's this
(01:48):
beautiful like storefront in the front
where you can buy gifts and you can buy
all sorts of things.
So tell us a little bit about how you
curate your selection of
what you carry in the boutique.
Well, I really felt like we needed some
retail therapy other
than just hair products.
And so I really like all
(02:10):
things sparkly and pretty.
And I just pick out what
I like for the boutique.
I like it to look cohesive with the
salon, but also really fun and just so
that people can really
accessorize their wardrobe.
I found a lot of great gifts for my
daughters who are
college age in their 20s.
And they love the makeup bags and the
(02:32):
flip flops and the robes.
And it is the quintessential glam
accessory spot, go to spot.
So I'm very excited to do some more
shopping coming up soon.
Oh yes, you must.
But tell us a little bit about your
history with the salon and how long have
you been there and why did you start the
salon to begin with?
(02:52):
Well, I had been in the industry for
many, many years and I always felt like
there could be something better for
hairstylist out there.
That really was my number one goal going
into it was creating just a great space
and a great culture for hairstylist.
(03:13):
It's really tough out there in the
industry, but it's a great industry.
It's a wonderful, happy career.
And I wanted stylist to be able to come
and have that and really feel that
whenever they're working.
And so that's really how I got started.
And then of course my focus was always
(03:35):
that, but then it was also for customers
to really feel that care and love and
support whenever they came in.
Well, I love that you
focus on the fact that
you're there to take care of the stylist.
The stylists are there to take care of
the customers, but you really do feel
that culture whenever you walk in the
doors of your salon, from the ladies at
(03:56):
the front desk to your manager, to
everybody is so friendly
and so loving and caring.
And when you start at the top with such a
warm, inviting culture and you're someone
that they feel like they can confide in
and go to and trust, that does trickle
down to the clients and how
they treat their clientele.
And you do get a certain type of client
(04:17):
in your doors that wants that environment
of, they always say hairstylists are
almost like
therapists that are underpaid.
(Laughing) So I think that really is true with your
salon and the ladies that you have
working for you, that that culture is
very clear in the environment there.
And I feel like the aesthetic also does
help with that because it's beautiful
(04:39):
when you walk in the doors and you've had
an expansion recently.
Yes.
Tell our viewers a little bit about your
expansion and what you have
coming up in the future too.
We have more fantastic
information coming your way.
So stay with us because City Lifestyle
with Angie Burns will be right back.
(04:59):
At City Lifestyle, we only partner with
best in class businesses.
And a lot of times people will ask me,
well, what does that mean?
We do a very rigorous vetting process for
anyone who is allowed to
advertise in our publications.
We only partner with people who are four
and five star businesses and who have
great reviews with Better Business
Bureau, have all of their licenses and
(05:20):
certifications up to date.
We wanna make sure that our readers and
listeners are only being recommended
businesses who are going
to go above and beyond.
So you know you are
getting a best in class business.
(Upbeat Music)
So we were just busting at the seams and
I had to decide, do I open up a new space
(05:42):
somewhere else or do I
just expand the salon?
And so we did have some square footage in
the back that was not used in the
beginning when I built the salon.
And so we just went ahead and took that
1,100 square foot and added eight more
stations and we added a
nail room and a lash room.
And it's just such a nice perk for
(06:03):
clients to be able to come in and just
get the full service when they come in.
They can actually get their nails done
while they're getting their hair done.
It's just so nice and easy for people
that are really in a time
crunch, which we all really are.
Yeah, that is absolutely finding the time
to take care of ourselves is something
that most women don't do, especially once
(06:26):
we get into careers and
mothering and all of those things.
So you do make it easy to have a one-stop
shop for all things needed for beauty.
But what I also think is really cool is
you have some really great
neighbors in your building.
Yes.
It's full of people that can help women
feel better, look better, and you have
some really cool incentives with those
(06:47):
other partners that I just learned about
the other day that
I'd love to talk about.
So tell me a little bit about your
agreements or partnerships that you have
with some of your neighboring businesses
so that people can go
and get whatever they need.
Okay, great, yes.
We have several really wonderful
businesses within our building.
(07:10):
It's really a wellness building and it's
called Willa Bend Wellness for a Reason.
And so we do partner with Original Skin,
which is upstairs, and they are a med spa
and they're wonderful.
And we like to get them as many customers
as possible and vice versa.
We also have a treatment
(07:32):
center right next door.
It's called Belaza, Columbiana.
And they do lymphatic drains.
They do all types of post-surgery
treatments that are wonderful.
They even do post-mommy makeover
treatments and things, lymphatic drains,
things to help with that after surgery.
They have Faha's for sale,
(07:53):
if y'all know what a Faha is.
And so it's just a wonderful, wonderful
place for people to come and just feel
healed and well, really.
It truly is a wellness center.
You can find anything that you need
within the walls of that building.
And when you go in, it's beautiful, it is
(08:13):
luxury, it is high-end, so you're not
just going into, I'm
gonna go get my hair cut.
You're gonna go and spend a day feeling
pampered, feeling like you are
rejuvenated when you walk out.
So what are some of the
things that you all specialize in?
So do you specialize in color, extension?
Is it the cut and size? And is it the cut and style?
(08:34):
The bridal, I know, has been a big one
for you guys lately.
Yes, yes.
So really, you can tell by our Instagram
what we specialize in.
We are all-- If they wanna follow your
Instagram, what's the link?
It's just Lee Graves
Salon is the Instagram name.
Perfect.
So we have lots of blondes on there.
We do a lot of blonding.
(08:55):
But I think that's so Plano and Dallas.
It is.
We do lots and lots of
foils and highlights.
We go through so many foils.
We're all really color specialists.
We have an educator for
Schwartzkopf on staff.
And she's always doing classes with the
newer girls, getting them
acclimated to the color line.
(09:16):
And when anyone comes in, any stylists
come in, and we are very picky who we
bring into our salon, they really go
through so much training to
get to know our color line.
And if they're not quite where they need
to be, they are lifted up to where they
need to be very quickly in our salon.
(09:37):
Because we all kind of
do things in the same way.
The mentorship program.
Yes, it is very much a mentorship.
We do have an apprenticeship program.
We have usually a couple of apprentices
going through the program.
They come right out of school.
And sometimes it takes a year, sometimes
it might take a year and a half for them
to get through the program.
(09:58):
But when they are finished with the
program, they're certified to do
everything on the floor.
And they've been through that whole
certification process for
every little detailed thing.
And so they're really good.
That's such a blessing for these young
artists coming out of school.
And they often don't know
where to start or how to start.
And so you're not only mentoring them on
(10:18):
the technique itself, but also on the
business side of things.
Because you are a business owner, and
each of your stylists are
quintessentially their
own business within itself.
So that's a luxury that I wish I had.
I know, it is great.
That so many of us didn't have.
(10:39):
But thank you for taking that on.
Because I know a lot of people are like,
"Oh no, we don't work with new."
Yes.
Everybody's gotta start somewhere.
Stay tuned.
We will be right back with City
Lifestyle, with Angie Burns, after these
short announcements.
(Upbeat Music)

(Upbeat Music)
I just remember feeling that as a new
stylist coming into the industry, you
know, just not knowing what to do.
I just was kind of winging it.
And I did find someone, I did find a
(12:05):
mentor, and it was a godsend to me.
And she told me I needed to go do some
certifications outside the salon.
And it was really hard for me because as
a new stylist, you're not really bringing
in a lot of money, but I did it.
I found a way to do it.
And then she mentored me for over a year.
(12:25):
And I had already been doing hair for a
little while, but it really
helped propel my business.
And I remember that feeling like, thank
goodness, I found her.
And so I want that for the stylist coming
out of school, I want them to feel that,
you know, just, we've got you and we're
(12:45):
gonna make sure you've got everything
down before you get out there.
So you have that confidence, and your
clients feel that confidence.
Because that is one of
the most important things.
If the client does not feel that you are
confident, they're not
gonna wanna get their hair done.
Yeah, so you're
setting them up for success.
Yes, absolutely.
And I love that.
(13:06):
I love that so much.
So one thing that always confuses people
is people think your name is Lee, because
your salon is Lee Graves Salon.
Everybody comes up to me all the time,
they're like, you know, your partner Lee.
And I'm like, no, her name is Carrie.
So explain to us
where the name comes from.
Well, I'm Carrie Lee Graves, and my dad
(13:26):
passed away right while
I was building the salon.
And I really had not known what I was
gonna name the salon yet.
And I really wanted to
have my dad's name in there.
So Graves is my family name, and that's
what I named the salon, really to honor
(13:47):
my dad in that time where I'm just
feeling so tender about that.
And I like to Lee Graves instead of
Carrie Graves for the name.
(Laughs)
It flows.
It does.
It has a ring to it.
Okay, thank you.
So I wanna touch really
quickly on the bridal portion.
So you can have your entire bridal party
come into the salon and get head to toe
(14:09):
ready for the big day.
Sure.
Or for the bachelorette party, or for any
events, photos, anything like that.
So tell us a little bit about what your
promotions, your specials are that you
were doing for bridal party specifically.
Yeah, great.
So we just started this,
it's called Something Blue.
I felt like there was really a need
(14:30):
because we were having brides call in and
wanting us to come out and do their
bridal party at the venues.
And our girls are so busy in the salon
that we decided we needed
to create a whole new team.
And so we found nine
ladies that can be on our team.
(14:50):
Some do hair, some do
makeup, some do both.
And so we have enough ladies now that can
do two or three weddings a week.
Wow.
And we can actually send out.
And of course we always want the bride to
come in, the salon, meet us, see our
wedding contracts, see all the details,
get their bridal trial done.
(15:10):
And we have some packages, like if you
have six in your party that get hair and
makeup done at the venue, then we will
give you $150 off your bridal trial.
And so there are some specials that we
offer for brides, but it's been really
fun so far and it's just a different part
(15:31):
of our business, even though it's still
the Lee Graves salon business.
So yeah.
Well, I just wanna say thank you for
being such an amazing
partner to City Lifestyle.
We're so excited to be able to share what
you do in the community with our readers
and our listeners and our viewers.
So we appreciate you
and thank you so much.
(15:51):
And we want people to come see you and
learn more about you.
So where can they reach you?
Tell us your address, website, phone
number, however is best to
reach you and Lee Graves salon.
Okay, great.
Well, our website is leagraves salon.com.
When you go to our website, you can see
all of our contact information.
You can email us, you can call us, or you
(16:13):
can even DM us on our Instagram, which is
just leagraves salon, all one word.
And the Instagram has a plethora of
photos and reels and all of the things
that I don't understand because I'm not
young enough, but it's beautiful.
Thank you so much.
So yeah, check out their Instagram, go
like their pages, follow them.
(16:33):
Do you have a tickety-tock?
We do have a tick-tock and I believe it's
just Lee Graves salon as well.
It's probably the same.
So I know that's the big thing now,
especially in the beauty world.
So the Instagram, the tick-tock, and then
obviously as old people,
we still like Facebook.
So follow them and make sure that you go
(16:54):
check out leagraves at, or Terry Graves
at Lee Graves salon.
Thank you so much.
