Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, all right, let's get rolling. You know, it's evident
that the last four weeks have not gone the way
that we want them as a defense or a team.
So you know, when things like that happen, you have
to adjust and make some changes. So you know, I
know d Q talked about earlier in the week that
I would be coming down to the field. I went
(00:21):
and asked them UH to do that for a number
of reasons. The first reason, I've been in the box,
you know, Q. Most of the coordinators that that I've
been around called it from the box, Q, Kpers, Mike Pedton.
Even when I was in college, the guys, the coordinators
always called it from the box. You have a good view,
you can see, you don't really have to have as
(00:43):
much help with personnel people coming in out. So that's
why the advantage of being in the box moving to
the field, I think the energy that that I have
in practice, that that that can be probably positive within
the game for the players. A couple of them got
a couple of guys have been asking for me to
come down is well, and so I think it's time
for that to happen. We got to do whatever we
(01:05):
have to do. To get a win, and so the
play has not been especially this last week, to the
standard at all. And like I said, that starts with me.
I got to do a better job getting the coaches,
to get the players to understand how we're going to
do it, and we got to get this thing turned
and got to get a turn right now. So with that,
(01:28):
any questions, so.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Going down to the villa, are there examples that you
even can look back on and say, if I had
been down there, maybe I could have affected this way,
whether it's a call, whether it's something confusion or anything
like that.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
No, don't. I don't think from that standpoint.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
I think I'm going you know, because you can look
back and hindsight is twenty twenty, okay, And I'm not
going to sit here and say that, Okay, if I
would have been down there before, this thing would have
been different.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
I'm not gonna say that.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I'm gonna say that we're going to try something different
because we the results that we've been getting aren't good enough,
you know, And so if you keep doing the same
thing you've been doing, you know, We've changed the way
we practice, We've changed our walk throughs, the meeting structures,
the voiceovers that we send them. We're trying to find offense,
defensive and special teams, the whole team. We're trying to
(02:18):
get out of this this rut that we're in, and
but my focus is on the defense and it hasn't
been near good enough.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
So this is a change that I wanted to make.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Then, without Marshawn, how do you envision the cornerbacks looking
you're out there?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Who goes?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Well, Mike, you go outside? How do you how do
you envision that?
Speaker 1 (02:34):
You know, we'll we'll see that on on game day.
Will I'm not gonna say who's gonna go where? That's
a competitive advantage, but you know, I hate that we're
losing Marshawn.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I will say that, do you do you lose aside
from just having sort of an aerial view there? Do
you do you lose much by going from the boot
to the sideline you.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Just can't see as well, you know, And so uh,
you know, when I'm in the box, I don't have to,
like I said, you have always I have a guy
telling personnel, you know what I'm saying, So I can
see I did personnel years in Green Bay, so I
can see guys running and out, so I can get
a call in quicker on the field, you can't see
it as as well. You can't see if the balls
on the hash or in the middle as well when
you're on the field where you can see it. So
(03:18):
if you have certain calls that are predicted by the
hash or the middle of the field, so things like that.
But you know, we have guys, We're gonna adjust and
we're gonna.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Work around it.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
And I know you guys don't want to use injuries
as any sort of excuse, but when you go through
three defensive ends, what sort of challenge is that when
you're trying to coach up guys that arrive in season
and trying to keep some continuity there.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, you know, And I never make excuse excuses when
we come up here, but you know, the injuries are real.
You know, you lose those three guys, you lose will
at safety, you lose you know, now Mark Seawan, you
had Kuans going in and out. So but that's that's
part of football, you know what I'm saying. And we
have to be able to generate pressure on the quarterback.
(04:05):
You know, once the eight went out, we haven't generated
as much pressure. We probably have to do a little
bit more, you know, I think on first and second
now I think we send the second most pressure in
the league. So but we might have to send more,
do a little bit things. But I don't want to
expose to back end as much. So there's a balance there.
But losing those guys, it has affected the way it's
(04:25):
calls him.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
Hey, coach Johnson, Jones have been able to be back
into the lineup. Could you talk a little bit about
having him back and what he's going to bring to
this defense.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Well, first, he's a veteran player that still has real,
real speed. He you know, he comes from that Patriot system,
so he understands a broad variety of football. He's a
guy that can play inside and outside. He can hold
photical control, he's tough, he tackles well, so he gives
(04:57):
a lot of versatility to where if we need to
put them outside or inside, we can put them in
those spaces.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
And could you talk a little bit about you said
that you all are trying everything to try to work
through this skit to get over it. Are you seeing
some of the things same things showing up each week
that you're surprised about.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
You know, I'm surprised or disappointed, or I would say
from the standpoint of the explosives. We didn't give up
explosives last year. Hell, we were the best in the
league in my time in Dallas, and giving up the
fewest explosives, I'm not used to it. So the amount
of explosives that we're giving up in in the past game,
it's really frustrating because they're they're coming from mistakes that
(05:45):
that really shouldn't happen, and I got to do a
better job or we got to do a better job
of getting that communicated. And so that's that's probably the
main thing.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
YO.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
I wanted to ask about Mikey Sanders still his perform
this year, but also specifically on the on Horton's second touchdown,
the twenty five yard er, when you're kind of ramp
past Mikey, what was sort of the play there.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I don't know if it was at him or not,
but what was the play there?
Speaker 1 (06:12):
We were in a main coverage, we were it's actually
a double all right, we were doubling eleven there and
there was a communication era between two other guys and
so but that didn't really affect Mikey, you know, on
that play, he got beat off the line of scrimmage
and then got beat to the seventh So but the
(06:33):
communication era with the other two guys had nothing to
effect on him.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
It wouldn't have changed that play.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
We had to do better job of playing man coverage
in that in that area.
Speaker 6 (06:41):
And to the point of just how you think he
has done this year. I know you're not going to
tell us right now who's going to play on the
outside or the slot, But from a bigger picture perspective,
I know you guys drafted him thinking he could be
a slot, but he was effective last year on the outside.
How do you kind of balance what you need to
do right now to help this defense versus long haul. Hey,
we might one of view him as this piece, but
(07:02):
we keep moving around.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, Yeah, We're going to put people in position to
where we feel like gives us the best chance to win.
He's produced you know, three interceptions, he's produced the ball
from you know, he can do it from inside. Last
year he did from outside. So but we're definitely gonna
put people in the position that we feel that can
you know, best serve us to win that particular game.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
And then when we get to the next game. We'll
move from there.
Speaker 7 (07:26):
What was your reaction to the Frankie Luvu suspension Slash
five and I guess moving forward with him, how do
you ensure that the hip drop tackle issue isn't still
a problem?
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yeah, you know, it takes me back to when they
started doing the targeting rule, and as coaches, you know,
everybody faulted at the beginning, where in this environment we
don't necessarily fight it. We asked the league, all right,
help us teach it better. Okay, because they're difficult plays
to to. That's why you don't see a lot of
(07:57):
flags on them that you really find because they're difficult
plays to regulate. And so you know, we're talking about
and we're working drills. One more step you know, how
not to throw your body into it. But uh, it's
it's a fast, violent game and and and the player
safety is the number one thing and we understand that.
And just like with the targeting how we've changed the
(08:18):
way that we hit the quarterback, how you don't fall
on the quarterback. Uh, that will this this this is
a new change. So the defensive players will catch up
to it. But it is a difficult thing for the
defensive players where there, especially when somebody is running away
from you and you get to them and somebody might
hit them from the opposite side, and natural reaction is
you go that way. But it's something that we would
(08:40):
have to learn as the coaches and as players to
navigate through because that's where the league is going. I
know he didn't play last week as much, but Jordan
McGee the last few weeks has played more than he
did you know earlier in his career.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
What sort of development have you seen from him as
he's gotten more plan.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Time, Jordan has been a really bright spot, you know,
even gloomy day that we've had on some of these
His run hit ability, his you feel this speed, you
see the violence he's constantly punching at the ball once
he gets there.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
His drops have been good.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
So we got to make sure we just keep putting
packages where he's on the field, and and and and
he's adding to what we do. I've been pleased with him, Joe.
Speaker 8 (09:23):
You talked about changing all of these things, changing blokthroughs,
changing practices. How aggravating. I guess is all of this
spend for you personally? And what is left for you
to change? I guess are there are other things that
you've changed in the past that you could eventually kind
of move to and try.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
You know that.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
The aggravating thing is we're not winning. You know, we're
not playing a good brand of a ball holistically and
and and and defensively at all. I mean the last
four weeks, I wouldn't I wouldn't have thought that we
would have been playing the way that we have been.
And so that's that's that's where I am with that
right now. And we're looking at everything, you know, and
(09:59):
like I said, it's starts. It starts with me. I
don't dodge anything. I don't. I don't think I've ever
came up here and made any excuses or put it
on the players or put it on anybody else. It's
my job to get the defense to play at a
at a at a better level. And I haven't done that.
So I gotta do a better job. And and trust me,
just working at it every which which way and and
(10:19):
we'll we'll get it figured out. We gotta get it
figured out now if we we're gonna get this season
back on track.
Speaker 9 (10:25):
And you you said you're trying to get out of
this runt. What's the challenge with an offense like Detroit's
coming Sunday, as y as you try to correct things.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Yeah, you know, I usually start talking about the start
with the press conference with the other team's offense, and
you know it, it it starts with the quarterback. He
throws with anticipation, he's he's calm in the pocket, his eligibles,
you know, f you know, fourteen eleven they had just won.
They have just so much speed and versatility from that
standpoint right there. And then the running backs. You have
(10:54):
two different types of running backs. One that can get
on the edge right now and go, and then you have,
uh a, a guy that runs a little bit more
more behind his paths. Offensive line, they they had one
of the best tackles in in in football, you know,
and they move people. And then I think, you know,
the tight end reporter, I think he's just, you know,
in my opinion's one of the one two three top
(11:16):
tight ends in the league. I have a lot of
respect and regard for his ability. You know, we talk
about and somebody say this guy is better. I don't
know if there's a guy that I could say necessarily
is a better tight end than him from a skill set,
a standpoint, I think he's really talented and they.
Speaker 9 (11:33):
Just just curious after at disappointing performance Sunday night, J
have you seen anything from your your guys, your players,
like a practice or meetings or anything like that that's
different after after Sunday.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Well, we changed the the structure of the meetings. We
changed the not necessarily the structure of the practice. The
practice is the same, but the structure of the meetings,
adding more walkthroughs, doing more voice so they can come
to work ready instead of just come to work if
they're you know, so we they have homework assignments and
that standpoint of all right, you're getting your voiceover. So
(12:09):
we could take the meeting and split some of that
meeting time out and put it on the field and
do extra walk therese more walth these, more plays, more plays,
and then we'll catch you back up in the classroom
towards the evening. So, like I said, we where results
in everything that we can to get this thing turned in.
Like like DQ said, the only people that can get
a turn of the people in the building.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
And so you know we're working at it.
Speaker 10 (12:34):
Hey, coach, you mentioned already about the significance and the
importance of being on the field bringing your energy and whatnot.
You also talked about the importance of being up top
to kind of see what's happening as a defensive coordinator.
Was there ever a time earlier in this season where
you thought maybe your intensity and what you can bring
down on the field with the players could have been
(12:54):
something you could have done earlier than this point in time.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
No, you know, I I I I really really didn't
because the the the viewpoint of seeing seeing things from
up top. I trust my coaches on the field, communicate
well with them on the field, you know. It is
at the point where, like I said, a couple of
players came and asked, hey, you know, could you do this?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Would you think about doing it?
Speaker 1 (13:18):
And once I heard that from them, okay, okay, well
I went to Q and said, Q A, let's let's
let's look at it.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
You know, let me let me go down.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
There and and and they might make a difference.
Speaker 10 (13:34):
Whatever.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
And then.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Is your.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Significantly different now.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Than Yeah, that's a really good question. It's it's somewhat different.
It's not where I envisioned it to be from uh
schematic standpoint, But we had to change some things because
of you know, some because of injury and some because
of this year, the explosives. You know, so you have
(14:05):
to adjust. You can't just keep doing and giving up things.
But it's it's it's different than what I was expecting. Yes,
all right, y'all have a great one, Okay,
