Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon everybody.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
So, uh, before we get started and before we talk
about some football, I just wanted to say a quick
note and send uh my condolences and our condolences on
behalf of the whole organization, uh to the family, uh
friends and loved ones of Rick Snyder. I know there's
a lot of friends and loved ones in here too,

(00:23):
and really sad to hear the news of his passing
and just share a quick anecdote.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Got a chance to meet him last.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Year on we did a mixer and that was the
first time I met him, and it was cool.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
We we talked for a while and talked a lot about.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Jack Kent Cook and just and just showed his uh
the history that he knows about this team, this organization, uh,
this city and and just could really feel his passion
and just his love for for DC sports.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
And it was really cool. It's cool conversation.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
And got a chance to to talk to him along
the way last about year and a half and and
always had a great conversation with him. So I just
really wanted to say, you know, just acknowledge him before
we get started, and uh, but with that, we'll get
to the football first. We'll start with, uh, with Terry.

(01:19):
And you know, so I said in the off season
that we wanted to get something done with Terry and
wanted him to be here for the long term, and
and we're thrilled that we got a chance to do that.
And uh, it was really uh it was it was
a really great day a couple of days ago.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
First, first, the cool story was, uh, we were in
my office and just heard a huge commotion outside and
it was just when the players got done, uh doing
their run on Monday, and we knew exactly what it was.
And it was all the guys congratulating for that, for him,
for that deal. And then uh, and then yesterday we
got to have Terry and Caitlyn come in here to

(01:57):
sign and that was a really neat day, too, special day,
and and it was a lot of fun, a lot
of smiles, and uh, it was a really neat deal
and I wanted to thank really our content team, our
graphics team, and just.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Everybody who had a part in that.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Courtney our photographer made that day really special for for us,
but especially.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
For Terry and Caitlin.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And so really thrilled to have that done and and
have him back out on the field, and uh as well,
really want to thank Terry and and it was it was,
it wasn't always easy, but we had a lot of
talks along the way, came to my office a bunch
and really had a lot of cool conversations and just

(02:38):
want to thank him for his professionalism throughout the whole
uh negotiation and and uh really pumped to be moving
forward with.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Him for a long time now.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
So with that, also wanted to think, uh that the
folks in our building, Brandon Sasena and Rob Rogers, who
who worked tirelessly on this deal, and uh, they were
they've been awesome really throughout their time here with my
with me and and just can't say enough great things
about them. They're they're really a great team and and

(03:09):
did a great job on this. And then uh thank
our owner Josh Harris for his support.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
And and his money and.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
But no, honestly though he's he's been so supportive throughout
everything for whatever we've done from you know, this building
and our team and and just anything we've needed, especially
when it comes to our players. So it's it's uh
fantastic to have an owner like that that that has
our back and and really shows support in so many
different ways and then just get into you know what

(03:42):
we'll talk about again today in the world's longest intro
opener to a press conference. But you know, yeah, it
wasn't all great the last couple of days. Yesterday, it
was a really tough day, uh, for a lot of
the players and for ourselves, but certainly for the players.
And uh, I want to thank all the players that
we released yesterday, some of them which were.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Awesome to get back to the practice squad today.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
But think all those guys that put in a ton
of time and work and passion and really you know,
really went for it throughout training camp. And I wish
the best of those guys, and I know a lot
of them will still continue to have long careers. And
with that, thanking everybody.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Who who helped us in the process.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Our personnel department did a fantastic job, our whole football
operations department, the coaches, the communication, everybody did a great
job in terms of making a tough day, uh, really
as smooth as possible.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
So with all that, happy to.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Answer some questions and and you know, hopefully take a
little burden off DQ talk to me mostly he's got
a lot.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
We've got to do this all year, so have at it. Okay,
first off, thank you.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
Secondly, what was the level of concern that something would
get done in time before the season?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
You know, I think you always you always like, at
least for me, I think about this could get done tomorrow,
this this could not get done and linger into the season.
But I think throughout the conversations.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
That that we had with Uh, with.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Terry's agent Buddy Baker, and then the conversations that I
had with Terry as we got closer and closer, there's
a lot more optimism, at least within myself. And it's
just you know, you don't want to get too optimistic
or pessimistic. But as we got closer, UH started feeling
pretty good.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
I guess, Dan, for you, how important is it to
get him back on the field now? Is this enough
time to get him ready where you need him to
be for the opener?

Speaker 5 (05:45):
Yeah? Absolutely it is and Uh and it's awesome. I
love coaching him. He is a rare competitor. So he'll
be out on the field today with his teammates, along
with Noah Brown and some others that are on the
way back. So that's an important time, John, even though
it's not technically game week, just to get some reps together,
it's a big deal for us, and yeah, we're really

(06:06):
pumped about it.

Speaker 6 (06:08):
Adam, obviously this is one of the bigger deals as
the GM of this of this organization. What did you
go through, you know, you know these guys emotionally, what
did you go through having to to try to get
this guy on this squad, keep him here and not
lose Terry McLaurin.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, I think you know, it was it was a
long time obviously, you know, from when we started the
talks till when we got finished. But I think you know,
there's there's you know, you get you get optimistic, pessimistic,
you know, all those different things throughout the process. But
you know what we'd never lost was our our love

(06:50):
and respect and and and really admiration for Terry and
what he does for us on and off the field.
So you know, keeping those things in perspective and trust
that you know we will be we'll be able to
get to do something.

Speaker 7 (07:05):
When you get into those negotiations and those conversations, how
do you balance how much you respect a guy like
Terry and what he's done on the field versus the
need to keep the financial house in order and and
kind of how you run the business side.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, I mean that it's it's it's a balance right
where you always you got to do what's best for
the team, but also reward somebody for for being a
great player. And so you know, you you set some
parameters for what you think that is by you know,
our team did an incredible job of you know, trying

(07:40):
to figure out what the right number was. And you know,
I think, uh, you know, as long as you come,
you know, and you're respectful throughout the process and you
understand you know, you're probably going to give in a
little bit more.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
You know, really both sides.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Giving in a little bit more than you want coming
to a place where it's it's maybe slightly uncomfortable with
both sides, and you just never you really just never
lose respect or lose perspective of you know, what this
person means to our locker room, to our team, into
this community.

Speaker 7 (08:15):
And then just going back a week to the Brian
Robinson trade, was there like a point over the summer
where you thought, hey, we might have we got a
lot of guys here, we might have to look at
something and then did that accelerate at any moment as
other players started to show out.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Yeah, there's a lot that goes into something like that.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
You know.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
One, there's you know, interests around the league.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
There's you know, the competition we have in that room,
which which we thought, you know, was a really good
competition throughout and so you know when you know, you
start breaking things down and you understand, you know, Brian's
going to be a free agent after the year, and
he's making a little bit more money than some of
the other guys in that room, and and just understanding like, Okay,

(08:56):
you're gonna have to make a tough decision. And Brian's
a great job for this organization. He's been through a
lot here and you know, to his credit, he was
he was really going for it again, and he had
a great off season.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
He was in great shape.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
And you know, it wasn't really anything uh you know, overly,
you know, it was.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Just all all positive.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
It was just the fact that we felt really confident
in the other guys in that room.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
So when we had the ability to.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Get something for him, you know, we decided to go
ahead and do that.

Speaker 8 (09:27):
Adam, you to go back to the Terry situation. Obviously
you've been in front offices, you've seen how how the
sausage gets made. But it's the first time with you
in the role of GM. Did you kind of what
what was that like? Did you learn anything was new
a by yourself about this process as you went through it,
especially since it was you know a little bit of
a tense situation.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Yeah, well, don't forget about Sam.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
You know we did. We did the deal with Sam
last year. So but uh, yeah, I mean they're all different.
I guess that's that's the point is they're all different, right,
and you know, there's you're dealing with different people with
you know, you know, it's just kind of different personalities
and different goals of what they want to get done.
So every deal is a little bit different, and you know,

(10:13):
some are longer than others, some are shorter than others.
Some some you start with different perspectives and then then
the other side and you got to come come to
an agreement there. So, you know, I think every single
thing we.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Do here is a learning experience.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
From negotiation with Sam, negotiation with Terry, to you know,
the fifty three cutdowns.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Uh, you know that this year versus last year. And uh,
you're always.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Learning, you always growing, and hopefully we'll keep getting better
at that. And you know, you never want you certainly
never want a negotiation to go this long, and certainly
you know, if you can avoid it, not to bring
it into training camp. And sorry about that, but but uh,
but we'll learn from that, and you know, take the

(11:01):
things that maybe you know I could have done better
throughout the process and try to apply that to the
next time we do this. We're gonna do a lot
of these here, hopefully, and hopefully we keep getting better
at them.

Speaker 8 (11:11):
And in terms of the wide receiver room, now, obviously
Terry's back, I'm curious how long you think it'll take
him to be ready, so to speak, to football shape.
And then Noah Brown don't know quite his situation. You
only have five guys in a room. What's your confidence
level right now with that group going into week one?

Speaker 2 (11:27):
We're very confident in that group, and you mentioned those
two guys who they are ramping up, and you know
that those are the things we'll find out here in
the next two weeks, you know, in terms of you know,
where they'll be at for the Giants and further down
the line. But we only have five in the on
the fifty three. But we have three guys that are
on the practice squad that we have great confidence in.

(11:49):
Two and we really look at our team, you know
as seventy and not fifty three. So those guys are
extensions of our team. So you know, we have great
confidence in those guys. Bring him up if we need them.
But in terms of where Terry and No will be
week one, we'll just find that out, you know, today,
tomorrow and a few days of practice next week.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
And we'll make the decision that's right.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
So we don't you know, you know, over extend them
if they're not ready to go eighty ninety plays or
however they can go.

Speaker 9 (12:20):
Guys over here, I'm Tom Shadow, new guy at the post.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Welcome, Welcome, well, thank you.

Speaker 9 (12:25):
I hate to ask another Terry question, but I will,
And without getting two into the weeds on the negotiating process.
Was there a turning point I guess in the past
couple of days. Was there anything to change or was
it simply just a function of like the season getting
close from the timing.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Of all, Yeah, I think, you know, I don't know
if there was a turning point. I think, you know,
deadlines kind of prompt action a lot of times, and
maybe that was it, Maybe that had something to do
with it, but we we just had a lot of
really good positive conversations leading up to that as well,
you know. And at the same time, Terry was coming
back and getting ready to play and getting healthier and

(12:58):
really finished you know his like his stint on pup
and he was running really well and really ready to
start practicing and playing. So I think all those things
coming together help help get this thing done.

Speaker 10 (13:13):
Adam. Thanks the all the money in this deal. That's
true for most deals is not is not guaranteed. You
mentioned the idea of you know, being committed to Terry
for the long term in your you know, putside the
numbers wherever they might be, like in your mind, like
what is the sort of long term commitment that you've
made to to Terry.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Yeah, that's that's a great question. And talked about this before.
But you know the important thing to know is like
and realize is we wanted to do this. We set
out we wanted wanted to do a negotiator an extension
with Harry, and you know that we didn't have to

(13:52):
you know, he's going in the last year of his contract.
He is thirty, but we wanted to do that because
we believe in him, and we believe in in that
he can play into his thirties, based on you know,
what he's shown us, how durable he's been, how hard
he works, how how much, how well he takes care
of his body. So you know, we signed you know,
it's a it's a three year extension. So he's under

(14:13):
contract for four years. And I don't think anybody up
here or in that locker room would be surprised if
he plays all four of those.

Speaker 10 (14:22):
And you mentioned the support you got from Josh Harris
in a negotiation of this magnitude, Like what what is
his level of involvement? Like, how did that support show up?

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, he's sorry, guy, Yeah we talked import Yeah that's
the most important. But we talk a lot and and
you know, he's he's got a lot of experience of
doing deals like these, not necessarily in the NFL, but
in in the NBA mostly, and so it's cool we

(14:55):
get to talk through it.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
And you know, the.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Contracts here are so much different than in the NBA,
so he's learning a lot as we go and understanding
how these things work, so we keep them in the
loop step by step about you know, our conversations we
have with agents and players and what we're going to
offer them and what we get offered back and all
those things. So he's he's learning, he's always trying to
learn about things. It's really he's really really smart, but

(15:21):
he's always still trying to learn more, and so keeping
him in the loop on all that.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
But he's we had his full support the whole.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Time, which was really cool. You know, even though he
wants to know what's going on, he's backed us the
whole way, and you know, he in the end he
leaves every decision up to us, which is really cool.

Speaker 11 (15:39):
Adam, Without getting into the specific of the numbers, which
you wouldn't do anyway, what were your non negotiables coming
into this particular negotiation in terms of what you had
to have from the team perspective to make it successful
for you.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
That's an interesting question. I don't I don't know that
we had any non negotiables.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
It was just.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
More you know, keeping in the parameters of you know,
what we thought was the right value and so you know,
whatever that is, you know, I think that was the
biggest thing, and there's no non negotiables about it, and
just just I mean, the biggest thing was just trying
to keep Terry here for the long haul and make

(16:26):
them a part of what we're doing and what we're building.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
And we got a chance to do that.

Speaker 11 (16:30):
And you mentioned before you thought Terry could be ready.
We'll be ready for week one. What's the concern level
with regards specifically to lower body injuries for a guy
that really has not had that ramp up yet and
hasn't had that contact yet.

Speaker 5 (16:43):
Yeah, So we hit that some last week DA and
then two more days this week and then in the
next week, so we'll have a better sense for that really,
like after next Thursday, see the workload push higher than
it is today tomorrow, and then some more into next week.
But he's in fantastic shape. But you're exactly right. That's
definitely on our mind and on our thoughts with he

(17:06):
and along with Noah and a couple other guys, just
to make sure we're gonna like make all the right
decisions and we won't miss a step on that. But yeah,
it's we'll have a better sense of that. I would
say you know, by the end of next week and
then we'll put the plan together. But until then we'll
keep hitting the next steps, the next steps.

Speaker 12 (17:27):
I have a two part question, so I can squeeze
three questions of the first one for you, did it
surprise you at all that negotiations dragged on as long
as they did, And how do you handle it when
things do seem to get personal for players?

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Yeah, I mean, obviously we didn't want it to go
this long, but that wasn't super surprising, understanding you know
that we have a little ways to go in terms
of finding middle ground. But you know, I think you
know it was it was it was it took how

(18:10):
long it took, you know, so as long as.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
We got to where we got, you know, we're happy.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
And then yeah, yeah, you never want you want to
take their personal feelings out of everything, and you know,
luckily for us, we didn't have any ill personal feelings
for for Terry or Buddy or anybody in the whole negotiation,
so so that.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Wasn't an issue.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
It was just you know, maybe just your feelings about
you know, where you want to be at the end
compared to where they want to be. But in terms
of how all that went. You know, I know there
were some tough times, you know in terms of you know,
you know, maybe something stalled a little bit. But in
the end, you always just you know understand, like shoot,

(18:52):
you see it all the time, like everything he did
for this team and everything he's done for this team,
and everything he did last year on the field, and
then everything he's done in this community. You know, you
keep those things in perspective, and and that's why we
wanted to do this in the begin in the beginning,
so I made it pretty easy and you.

Speaker 12 (19:11):
Guys didn't make any waiver claims today. How much do
you expect the roster to to change about before Week one?

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Yeah, it's always really fluid, and you know, you never
know what opportunities will come up.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
And in terms of players and whatnot.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
I can say that we're thrilled with the guys we
have and we're we are so pumped up with this team.
And you know, we feel on paper this team is
is stronger than we had.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
It last year.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
And you know that that means nothing until we start
playing the games. But we have so much confidence in
the guys in that locker room and we're just getting started,
are really really like super pumped with those guys and
really excited to see him on the field against the Giants.
I think, you know, I think having everybody out on
that field is going to be really really cool and exciting.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
Yeah, I agree with we love where we landed. But
there was some really tough calls and hard and that's
what you want it to be. Where it's competitive and
you know, where you can't sleep and we're talking at
night and talking in the morning and so like, as
hard as that is, that's a great thing because it's
not so cut and dry, easy and so like I said,
doesn't mean there was more some really tough.

Speaker 13 (20:20):
Calls, Yeah, Adam. As the you know, terror negotiations lingered,
you know, the outside noise kind of increased. There's a
lot of frustrations, you know, with the fan base outside
curious how much do you pay attention to that? Do
you put your blinders on, because obviously there's a lot
of frustration all the way around from you know, the
team side, the agent side, the terry side. I mean,

(20:41):
how much do you kind of factor in that and
pay attention to that.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Well, I think that's cool that we have such passionate
fans you know that really are just invested in what
we're doing and what we're building and understanding how important
Terry is to our team and wanting them to get here.
So that's awesome, you know, and once they stop being
so invested in caring and that's probably not a good thing,
but you know, we don't and you can't pay much

(21:05):
attention to that in terms of you just got to
focus on what you can control and try to get
the deal done.

Speaker 13 (21:12):
As we are closer to the season opener here, specifically,
what do you like about this roster? Is there anything
specifically that you're really intrigued about outside you know, JD
five or the quarterback or what now? Is there anything
kind of layer wise that you're really excited about maybe
they didn't have last year at this time going into
this year new season.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Yeah, gosh, I could probably go through the whole roster
and tell you something I like about every single guy
on there, and every single.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Guy we have on the practice squad as well. But
I just the depth.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
I think the depth is better, you know, upfront on
both sides, and just bringing in some guys who are
really complimentary through free agency through the draft that really fit.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
In what we're doing.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
So just the identity of the team overall, without having
to single out anybody, just the overall identity and competitiveness
that every player has on this team and really kind
of fits in what we're looking.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
For as competitors. I don't you got anything there?

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Yeah, a lot of things. I would say. It's good,
it's I love that we've added some players like von Miller.
You don't just sign one. He's a multiplier by the
way he connects to others in the room and standards,
and that's no different than Wagner and ERT's and some others.
But there's a lot of things, you know that we
love about this team, like to have this many guys

(22:26):
want to come back and be a part of the
practice squad after Adam and I are sitting in front
of him on a tough day. That speaks to their
regard for one another and knowing that they want to
be a part of it. And so I thought, what
the players have built here together is pretty damn special.
And so that doesn't happen that office, Scott, and so
to see that many people want to come back and

(22:46):
be a part of it, and like not even any hesitation. Man,
you know, there's a real connection, and so when a
team's connected, you got a chance to do some good things.
So that's probably what I'm most excited to see. And
you wouldn't know that until you have those hard conversations
and see how the next day goes. And so I thought,
together these players have really created something.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Special, probably for for both of you guys. I know
you guys were in touch with Terry along the way,
but separating kind of the emotional and the business side
of things. What was your reaction when you kind of
heard him talking at Eastern Motors kind of the preseason
availability that he did to that, What was your reaction
to hearing that?

Speaker 2 (23:27):
You know, I didn't really watch that, to be honest
with you, but I mean I heard that he was
frustrated and and you know I wanted it. You know,
I heard that loud and clear, just by the reaction
and everything. So just it was like, Okay, let's let's
make sure we we fixed this and make sure we
get this thing right. And you know, it shows you
how much he cared, you know, how much he cared

(23:48):
about this team, how much he cared about being here.
And so I think in its own way. I'm sure
that that helped us get this thing across the finish line.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Yeah.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
