Speaker 1 (00:00):
As we get rolling.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
I in the locker room last night, I told the
guys and the coaches included, man, take a minute and
enjoy the win. And there's nothing quite like a locker
room after that. It had been it had been a while,
but today that's when you get back to it. And
that's why we have our truth day. What we can
do better and what we need to do better, and
(00:21):
there's a lot that we need to do better. There
was flashes, but that consistency continues.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
To haunt us. There were some big plays.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
The complimentary football at the end of the half was
probably my favorite part of the game. Pump return, stop,
interception like those were ones that I thought were really
cool spots. But penalties and turnover margin and other things
we definitely got to improve and uh, and that's a
big part of finishing and uh, you know with the
(00:51):
division at hand of the games that we're having in
the next three, Uh, that's a big deal for us
and we're really pumped to go after it and again
this week. Then the last thing I'll hit you on
we'll be regarding Jayden and we're gonna sit him for
the final three games. And I know your first question
(01:11):
likely is well. The key what went into that And
the answer is it was a lot and part medical
and part team. As of today, he still wasn't all
the way clear to play, so like last week, we
didn't have all the results until the end of the
week and then a short week next week with the
Christmas game.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
So we believe this decision.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Allows him to take advantage of the next few weeks
in a different play. He wants to practice and he
will practice. He also wants to support Marcus in a
way that Marcus has demonstrated.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
And helped him.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
And so, like I thought that was significant. We all
know the best way to grow is during the games.
But with that, you know, not being the best way
for us, there's plenty of ways for him to learn,
you know, over the next three weeks, and you know
he's gonna learn, and this vantage point too. So just
wanted to give you all the info that I had
and then we'd get started recapping the game or however
(02:07):
you guys want to proceed, So let's get it rocking.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
John con How disappointing Dan, is it that you that
it's come to this, given like what you guys have
all talked about the importance of those game snaps.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, I get it, John, And like, that's that was
the plan for sure with five games, you know, and
like in football and life, you adjust, and this is
the best plan for him and for the team right now,
and so that's what you know. We're always gonna look
into it and have lots of discussions about it, but
we decided this was the best way for us over
the next three games, knowing that he wasn't fully clear
(02:41):
to get back just yet.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
And then if you can sum up like his season
and also like how much is going does it way
in there that he had left each of the last
three games he played with some sort of injury, does
that factor into it? And you know all that.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, we discussed all that, but that didn't factor it
into it, John. One didn't relate to the other, and
so it was disappointing, and like, hey, let's be honest,
it's been hard, you know, in a lot of ways.
So we're trying to make the best decisions we can.
But it wasn't you know, a factor from previous It
was just a matter of, hey, not clear to do it,
and we're gonna make the best decisions for the team
(03:17):
and for him. That's that's a number one.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Thank you, Dan.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
When did Jayden get informed of this? When did you
guys tell them the decision?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Just this afternoon, okay, So I had a chance to
visit with him. Adam did as well, and so it
was important. We want to be communicative with all the guys,
and you especially like their spot and Marcus as well.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
And Marcus will do great jobs.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
And I thought for him also being able to prepare
and get all the reps in and out, that can
be a difficult process to go through as well. So
we wanted to give him the best runway to go
do his thing as well.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
And I know earlier in the season you had it
said that the reps were important. Was that matter of circumstance?
It's like in Madrid when there were what six games
left versus three? Or was it just looking at the
totality of everything that is, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And it wasn't even going to be three, you know,
so thinking he wasn't going to be cleared up for
this game and then a short week to go, so
then we're like, now we're coming back into less than that.
So you're right, all of that went into the process
to go do it.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
Tom they did to what extent, any extent was Josh.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Adam and I obviously, like you know, keep him in
the loop on all the things that are going through it.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
So it's good. It's we continue to have dialogue with him.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
We meet on a regular basis for the games Fridays, Mondays,
so we have a.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Constant dialogue Tom. So that's helpful that it's not.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Something that we have to go to on a on
a big moment or anything. We just try to stay
in a constant level of communication and that that has
been really solid for us.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
So just to clarify, this is a decision that you
guys made and then notified him of for correct them.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I guess that would be correct in the way that
you'd say it. We like talked and have discussions. I
don't know if we notified him, but maybe a discussion
is a better way to phrase that, David Aldridge, we
certainly don't have that.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Kind of juice to notify the owner. Yeah, that's better
clarify that.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Dan, again, knowing that you still have three games left
to play in the season, I'm it this season has
been so odd with everything that's gone down, with the
injuries and everything, but do you have a sense of
here's going forward, how we can maximize both Jane's potential
(05:51):
and his availability like that, like you have more information
now than you did a year ago, Yes, and what's
different now going forward?
Speaker 2 (05:59):
I guess I would say yeah, and going in some
of that is going to be by designed him too,
And that's why we're hopeful for the reps d A
and we thought, Okay, here's here's a shot to go
find those specific things for him. And it's mostly on dropbacks. Honestly,
DA to say when do I remain a pastor like
eyes downfield and so not having to do those in
(06:19):
the game reps it isn't ideal, but we're going to
try to find the best way possible. And I'm hopeful
that in a year from now, when you say what
you learn, you know, when you're talking to Jayden and
maybe this vantage point, even over a couple of weeks
when he's you know, disappointed he's not playing and wanting
to be that we gain some experience and maybe a
(06:42):
vision that you wouldn't have normally had DA, and that's
what I'm hopeful that we'll get done. And then as
it gets into the off season and the training, Like,
obviously that's going to be a big part of what
we're doing, knowing how important he is, and so he
knows that. He's not happy that, you know, he's going
to be out out, But that's where we're at, you know,
as we're going through it right now. But there's lots
(07:04):
to still learn, and we're gonna push that hard.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I know.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
It seems like when you think about last year, at
least a lot of people seem to think it was
just a bunch of incredible plays that he made, But
there was a lot of complimentary football going on last
season that allowed him to make those plays. And I
just wonder, like how important going forward is that to
improve the defense to the point where they're creating more
turnovers and getting shorter fields for him and more opportunities
(07:31):
for him to make plays on shorter you know, quicker
drives and easier drives and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yeah, you're right, and you may have heard me stay
I remember from last season. So the best part of
our team is the team. It's covering a kick, it's
fuel position, it's creating a takeaway, it's converting a fourth down,
and so having the complimentary football to do that that's
a big deal. And when you can nail those, you know,
we have more continuity. Certainly offensively we perform better on
the fourths. But you're right, man, you create a short field,
(07:58):
you get one to go. And so that's why I
felt yesterday strongly about the half. It was a fantastic
return by Jalen and then a stop and a pick,
and it's like, that's the switch, man, You've seen it,
we all have, and that's that momentum change that just
takes place in these smallest moments. And I felt that yesterday.
I felt that energy. We did enough to let him
(08:21):
back in when you have to score lead. But that's
what I'm referring to, and that's what you're referring to
as well. And so that's capturing the complimentary.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Way that that you were describing. And I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 7 (08:34):
Hys Sean.
Speaker 8 (08:38):
Uh Diet you as part of this, you know, obviously,
you know barn Andrey Marcus will start, you know, the
rest of the season. You know, obviously he's set to
be a free agent, you know going into the offseason.
I'm poorting out these last few games for him, you know,
kind of as he's you know, making a page for
potentially getting about back there.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, he's uh, he's an impactful guy here, Deshaun, and
for a lot of reasons. But also it's it's the
play on the field and having him, you know, the
full you know, three games to go, take all the
reps and do the preparation to go.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
That's a big deal.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
And so we wanted to give him that opportunity as
well to make sure he had the timing, the execution,
the practice reps. You know, sometimes when you're the backup,
not getting the game reps with the you know guys
that are in during the week, that can change it.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
So yeah, that that was part of the goal for sure.
To Sean.
Speaker 9 (09:32):
JP, Hey, Dan, I know you said you guys informed
Jade of the decision earlier.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
What was his reaction, I would say disappointed, but understood
as well. Like this guy's a competitor, JP, That's what
like always stands.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Out about him.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
I think the fact that like wanted no part of
I R to practice be there with the guys doing that,
I think that speaks of the teammate and why, and
so that was important to him, you know, to show
that support and wanting to do it as well. So
that told us a lot, you know also about it,
(10:11):
because it would have been the easy way to say whatever,
and like that's not how he is at all. So
I like the fact that he's competitive. I like the
fact that he wants this time, and so that's an
important piece to it.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
And how difficult as balancing all of this Jaden's desire
and toughness, the big picture kind of a loss season,
Like how difficult has all of those factors been and
landing in these decisions.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Yeah, it's hard.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
It's nice to have like a partner with at him
to talk through, you know, because there's a lot that
you know, just consumes your mind day and night, and
the topics and what's gone well, what hasn't gone well,
and so you just try to talk it through, man,
and so having somebody to discuss with, go through options with,
and then ultimately make the best decisions.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
For the team.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
They're hard, but it's you know, like I said, much
better to have some to talk it through with JP
and let's talk about the pros and the cons. And
we thought we had a good plan, you know, for
the next five and just you know, what's saying go
like you know, man plans and god laughs, you know
it was the adjust and that's that's what you're doing.
(11:17):
So that's in a game that's in you know, when
injury take place, and so you go a good plan
and then you have a way to adjust it.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Thank you, welcome, Scott.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Hey Dan. I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of people
out there that feel like, how can Jayden get better
by not playing in these last three games? Or how
can you get better, you know by not you know,
having these live game reps. You say, what to that?
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Yeah, so well he's got to be cleared first and
so it'd be unlikely for this one and then a
short week coming up.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
So it's hard Scott to do that.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Like I would agree, like the best place to do
it is in a game to grow. It's the very best.
But that doesn't mean you can't squeeze every ounce of
energy into the practice and working through some of the
specific things that we want to do. And so that's
what I would say, like we're always going to make
the best decisions for you know, the team and the player,
but that doesn't mean we you know, can't take advantage
(12:13):
of this time. And like I said, I hopeing you
talked to him in a you know, a year from now,
and man, that gave me a different vantage point. I
want him to gain something from this time, and that's
what I would hope to accomplish from that.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
He's not medically cleared for physical contact yet. But I'm
just curious if you guys were ten and four and
not four and ten, would the situation be different? Would
would he be playing these final games?
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Yeah, we're not, so we didn't have that you know discussion.
Thank you, you're welcome, Howard.
Speaker 10 (12:48):
And then excuse me, what would you point to as
the areas of biggest room for Jayden to learn at
this point?
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:59):
I thinkumber one one is Howard is like that competitive
spot for him and also like those decisions to you know,
protect the team, to know when to get down, when
to slide, when to throw it out of bounds. And
so most of those, Howard, come on a drop back
pass where you're outside the pocket, and it's typical for
a lot of quarterbacks, you know, who are outside the pocket.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
What do you do?
Speaker 2 (13:19):
It's scrambles, like it's part of what we track, you know,
every week defensively, scramble to run to throw, you know
where the sack's coming from. And so that's it, Howard,
to find as many outside the pocket plays, not a
design bootleg or a keeper to go outside, but typically
on the dropbacks that a person gets outside the pocket.
(13:40):
So that would be at the top of it.
Speaker 10 (13:43):
And just to confirm nothing has changed or has I
guess Alaska.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
The other way, has.
Speaker 10 (13:49):
Anything changed medically with regard to the elbow in terms
of last week you had said there was no sort
of structural problems. It was just reaggravation I think was
the word. Yeah, is that still the case?
Speaker 2 (14:04):
It is, and it's about it in the same spot,
and so that's why he hasn't been cleared, you know,
to go back to it. And we also want those
reps if he was to be where he could fully
express himself and play in his own, you know, style
that he does things. So when he's not that affected
a lot of the decisions too, Howard. So we're gonna
do our best to simulate as much as we can
(14:24):
in practice. And uh, let's try to do the best
that we can with that spot. But yeah, he's in
the same space. Medically, we're not clear to go back,
but structurally there hasn't been any setbacks, tying for two more.
Speaker 10 (14:38):
Candy and Ben Hey their coach with so much movement
on on the offensive side of the ball due to injuries.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
What of your conversations been like with Cliff Kingsbury? How
how have you all worked through this?
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Yeah, we early in the week, that's when we discussed, Okay,
what would the plan look like? You know, who would
be in these are the available receivers or tight ends,
and so we start from their candy of trying to
be like, what would that initial forty eight look like? Okay,
and then once you have that plan, it's kind of
easier to begin of what and who and had a
(15:14):
game plan and so that was for instance this week
having some guys back and then also having Zac out,
and so how does that balance into it. So if
you can start at the beginning of the week, then
you can adjust to say this is who will feature,
this is how we'll go in the training camp, it's
pretty vanilla. You know where you're at, and then once
the season begins, how we put people in different spots.
(15:36):
So we start at the beginning of the week and
then we work from there and then it's been good
to have some other guys work in that hadn't been
a part of it, and you know guys like Berks,
who's okay, there's something here that we want to continue
to develop and we still dig in on guys like
that too.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Thank you, you're welcome.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
Dan.
Speaker 7 (15:56):
Just for some other injuries, any update on Layer me
Tons and with this decision to sit Jaden, does that
possibly change how you might handle other players in terms
of where they're at playing these last three games.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
No, Ben, Just from the medical standpoint first, we'll let
that drive it first. Ben, Let's get to Larbie first.
There's no blaque injury, and we'll have to see what
the strength looks like for him, the movement, the strength
over the next couple of days, and if he's able
to then he will play.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
All right, Thanks
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Coach, all right, thanks Chary, thank you everybody, and we'll
see you tomorrow.
