Speaker 1 (00:00):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
It is yeah, cool to be here with you guys
today as we're entering into day two.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Of Mini camp.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
This is it's really coaches time in some ways, and
I'll explain that as the systems you know, in all
three phases, can the players have a deeper understanding of that,
and I thought Cliff and Joe and Larry like they
have really put it in in that space. Another group
is the year two players assisting the first year players
(00:28):
into it, whether it's a first year as a free
agent joining the team or first year as a rookie,
and that's such an important thing. So that's really where
I feel like in the off season, this is the
coach's time. They've got to get these systems in place
so the guys can really do their thing. And if
we can isolate the skill, then there's these next forty
days that'll be coming up.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
For the players to really work those.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
You also see some high school coaches here today, quite
a few over one hundred, which is awesome, and they
play such an important role in the lives of you know,
the kids that they are coaching, and that was certainly
impactful in my life, and I know that they're having
that impact now.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
So with all that said, let's get rocking with you
guys and begin.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
You talked yesterday about the front seven doing a lot
of stuff together and all that. Is it more than
in the past, and how much when you go to
doing something like stopping the run. Can what they're doing
now help translate into more success there?
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yes on both, Yes, they're doing more as a group together.
And I you know, really lean on Joe on that,
like I thought, he's one that's also thrown a great offseason.
What things can we incorporate? How do we add certain things?
And some of that comes John from like doing more
time together. So when you're starting last year and the
first you know OTAs and what you're going and how
you're doing, and so when you have being together for
(01:49):
a whole calendar year like that's a big deal. And
so for so many of these coaches to be back
here wanting to elevate ourselves to see can we take
it further? To help the players take it further? That
was one of my off season goals ken as a staff,
can we you know, collectively help one another, you know,
take it up a notch? And a number of them have,
(02:10):
so Yes, it's by design that they spent more time together.
And yes, usually the things that you emphasize during that time,
you know, you get to see it come to fruition.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
And you got you have several guys for sure, like
in key years in their contracts. How much do you
like having guys like that where it's like, you know, like,
hey guy like deb or whatever, they've got to go
out and produce that they want to get something beyond that?
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Does that?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Does that a good thing for a team?
Speaker 1 (02:36):
You know?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
To me, everything's customed and sometimes like having the security
can be just the thing the person needs. Sometimes it's
the carrot, you know that you know, it can be
just something that they need. So I think it's just customized.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
To where we're at.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
The fun part about our group is that they're really
connected and stay tight together and so there's so much
fun knowing that the better we play, more opportunities are
for everyone. And so they have a very good understanding
of that.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Dan.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
You guys kept David blow Uh for some interest outside.
When you have this situation where the young guy and
he's learning, does he get more responsibilities or does it
you change what he's is or is it just hey,
keep doing what you're doing and you know, improve on that.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, No, we changed some responsibilities and the purpose behind that,
uh them was to get more development chances. And so
you know, he spoke in front of the team today.
So that's one of those things of what are the
more responsibilities that are going in. We you know, did
a presentation on the ball and so it was good
to see Tom Donna Tell and him you know, in
conjunction presented today. So yes, there's more responsibility. And with
(03:45):
that it is also like a we care about your
development as a coach and we're gonna work really hard
to help develop you much like we are you know
with the players.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And so that was by design.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
And obviously building the rapport with the players the culture.
This is obviously but a huge deal for you over
the last it'll sits sence you got here. How much
time do you spend in the off season thinking, okay,
now what how do I change it up? What's fresh?
What do I say I had? How much time do
you do that? Are there some things you've already done
that have been different?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Some things are different sometimes as a coach, you also
need to remind yourself like you don't have to say
this differently.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
You know, repetition doesn't spoil the prayer.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know, you you can sometimes say the same thing
about the ball or tackling, and you know, those are
things that like, I don't have to have a new way.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
To say that.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
What's nice Ben here is seeing the other leaders develop here.
And so that's to me where I take great pride
in to see other players into this spot where they're
elevating one another. And if it only had to come
from me, I think you're right where you would have
to really think, how do I say this different? But
when it's also coming from the next person, the next person,
(05:00):
they'll say it in their own way.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
So message isn't just what we say.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
It's also like how we live and how we act
and how we treat one another. And so the messaging
is really how we live and.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
We show examples.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
But there's some things that we highlight that or like
all the time things and a lot of them are
the skill work at practice, and we work tackling a
lot and breaking tackles and leverage and disguises on defense
and temple on offense, and so those things I don't
need to say it in a different way, But.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
I want to make sure it's always emphasized.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I think there's quite a few, and it'll be the
easy ones where you know, some guys you've already had
leadership things like a Marcus, but you know, also it's percy.
I've seen it in some of the second year players,
you know that we were talking about yesterday. I thought
it in Jordan McGee in terms of the way that
he's put in so much work. Ben Sinnett is one
(05:55):
I thought like, had just a fantastic off season and
I'm seeing that come to fruition in this you know,
time frame that he's been going. So seeing different guys
into different spaces, it's been good. But there's quite a
few actually that, and it's not all in the same way.
Like sometimes it might be out on the field, somebody
(06:15):
else might be in the meeting room, somebody else might
be down in the weight room and with the guys
in their training so different voices and uh, some new
players that's made an impact on me. Dietrich Wise and
Jonathan Jones just such a good standard about how they
do things. So it's it's cool, you know, to find
different guys.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah, that honestly makes me smile.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
You know, this is a true commander, one of our
heavy hitters, and like an absolute all around b MF
like in every way. It's no surprise he was elected
one of the captains, you know when the postseason began.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
But he affects all sides of the ball.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
And that's kind of the best part about our team.
It's not like, hey, I'm just over here with the
defense or just on the special teams. Like we're one
team and I love that and Jeremy represents that about
as strongly as anybody could. Now the performance side, then
you feel him and the speed and the tackling and
the toughness, and we really value what he brings to
(07:26):
us on and off the field. So uh yeah, when
that came out and that's that's an absolute, really cool
moment for.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
US coaches, college coaches, and.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah, I think it's really important for our game, Nikki
number one. Off the field, there's such an impact that
high school coaches have. It it's way bigger than football,
and it's I recognize that because that's true in high school, it's.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Also true in college. And so I wanted them.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
To know how important that role is and.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
How much I respect it. Of what they do.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Then from the the football side, I want them to
see the techniques and see things that you know, we
are teaching. And if we can do that and share
that with them and help their programs become better, man,
that's paying it forward. And so I'm really pumped. There's
like over one hundred coaches here today and some flag
coaches as well, and so to have that kind of
turnout quickly, that's really cool. A couple of weeks ago,
(08:41):
M Yeah, he looks number one, really healthy. You know,
there was a cut specifically yesterday on a run and
where he was able to cut plant and like downhill
as fast as as you could see, and those of
the things that I've seen.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
He's back.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
We got back on the return game as well on
the kickoff side. So you feel his urgency and intensity
for it. But he's really throwing a good off season.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
He really has Yes.
Speaker 5 (09:16):
Leaders, have you not?
Speaker 1 (09:21):
A yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:25):
And I think most of the time, some some of
the very best leaders are excellent communicators. And I felt
that way with LT right from the beginning. You know,
I got a chance to meet his family and what
were the things in his background that made him unique
and finding out about him then also on the football side,
you know, what are the things that you know he's
(09:46):
excellent at, what are the things he wants to work on,
And so as he goes through an off season, there's
like such a specific plan for this is what I
want to do during this time to get ready and
having that kind of process of winning.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
I noticed that right away coaches out here and outreach.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
What does the community outreach?
Speaker 3 (10:10):
What does that mean?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Number one?
Speaker 2 (10:13):
I want them to know what they're doing really matters,
and like we see the work that they're doing. So
if this is one way you know that we can
pay it forward to the coaches to let them know
a practice schedule, the way you set up something in
terms of a drill, how do you teach our game
really safely?
Speaker 1 (10:30):
And if we can do that better, And it.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Helped them establish that in their schools in their own communities.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
I think it just helps grow everything.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
And uh, all of us have that responsibility and we
take that responsibility seriously. So I had a huge impact
on my life growing up and for us to be
able to have a chance to get back into that
and pour into them, like man, there's it's just as
good as it can get because you know it's a
way for them to make an impact.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Happened a couple of weeks ago over the NFL announcing
that they're going to allow players to compete at the
Olympics for flag football. Curious and would you feel comfortable,
one of your players wanted to.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Yeah, good question.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
It's it's cool right that flag football is going as
a sport, and the process of putting a team together,
I'm not sure what that looks like just yet, but uh,
I think it's really important, you know, that it goes
well and they find the right thing. It's not the
same exact game that they play, but uh, there are
a lot of really good candidates, so it'll be interesting
(11:38):
as we get closer of who wants to do it
and uh, how they go about the selection process of
the first flag football team.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
So I think it'll be cool for sure.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
But the way they're gonna go about it, I don't know,
but uh, yeah, for sure, I'll be watching.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
A little bit at the start. But the continuity, continuity
and familiarity of having a coaching staff that's together from
year one to year two in what areas can you
see a coaching staff kind of take that step as
you as you move forwards parts the.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Season, there's efficiency element for sure. Okay, this, this, this,
But what also happens is you're more open to suggest
to receive feedback, and as coaches, that's important. You know,
when we're studying something different, have we thought about this?
Can we go into that way? When you do a
first time installation of your systems, it really stems, you know,
(12:32):
from the coordinators, this is what's going to be. Then
as you get into years two and beyond, now you
have a chance to study some other things. Would this
be something we'd add? Would it not be where last
year we didn't really get a chance to do that
we were putting in You know, this is from a
philosophical standpoint, how we want to play, and so now
you're able to that we practiced it.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
We didn't call it a lot. Let's take it out.
This one we should have called more.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Let's give it more time so you're able to put
the puzzle together a little bit better. How to feature
the guys better, and the communication amongst the staff offense
to defense, how they share ideas across the hall. Those
are things that probably don't fully develop until you know
you're together a year and you've been through the good
(13:18):
times the tough days, and then.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
You're able to share more information.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
So that was one of our goals going into the
off season. Could we elevate ourselves to help the players,
And you know, to a man, these coaches have really
nailed that piece, and that's why we're excited for the camp.
You know, this is kind of the culmination of that.
And then our times together are intens and we'll need
the break too before we come back, much like the
(13:42):
players do.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
When we're here. It's kind of go go.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
And you're hitting it hard, and so we'll need that
time to recharge and get ready as well.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
All Right, we'll see you guys out there.
