Speaker 1 (00:02):
Before we get rolling, I thought, just acknowledge some tough
news yesterday in the NFL, and I want to take
a minute to extend condolences to the Neeland family, to
the Cowboys, and although I didn't get to coach Marshawn
hits all locker rooms and uh, you know, all across
the league, and just a tough deal and just a

(00:23):
good reminder man, there's always there's always people you know
to help support and in all ways.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
And you know, all all spots. But it's really tough news.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Just again, wanted to send our condolences to their family
and to their organization.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
And all across the league. It's hard. So hitch on.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
A few of the captains offensively Chris Rodriguez and uh
and toughness, physicality and uh, Chris is somebody like their
teammates count on him in such a big way. He
he absolutely takes care of people here in this building
just by energy, as approach defensively, deron payin games, it's

(01:00):
gonna be one of will lion of scrimmage game for sure,
He'll be right in the middle of it. And then
for special teams. It was Jeremy Reeves and the comment
I made to the team was he makes every room
better that he's in. That's defensive room, defensive backs, special teams,
locker room. He's definitely that kind of leader. So all
I said, get ready to get rocking with you guys

(01:22):
in the game.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Start with Jaden, just some I guess, some good encouraging
news for him, and what's what's the I guess I
was bringing up what's the plan? But what is the
plan over the next several weeks and you know, is
there a chance that he could come back?

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Well, let's start with just you know that it was
a good process to go through, like all the players do,
get you know, second opinions and getting all the information
you know of what to do and how to do it.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
So I thought the guys nailed that.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Doctor dunciat it ran point on that, but you know,
consulting all the people and Jaden was involved with that
as well. So it's a good deal. With no surgery obviously,
that makes a big difference. You have an injury not
to have to go down that road. I hope to
give you guys an update after the bye week about
where he is and you know where we go from there.

(02:09):
But after that, I'll give you an update on where
it's at, and it gives a couple of weeks to
get to that space.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
That's where rap and then when when you look at Sunday,
well let's go to the corner position too, and with
Mikey going inside outside wherever it goes. Ye, what did
you see him outside last year that if he has
to go back out, there is something you can build on.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, with him and Jonathan we're going into the season
John we kind of mixed back and forth inside outside.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Both of them had the versatility to do that. We
kind of.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Landed on more outside for John, more inside for Mike,
but then we kind of worked both of them. So
that's what we'll kind of continue to work into.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Last year.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
What did we see obviously, the like the playmaking ability outside,
We saw you know, him as like a competitor just
finding his way. We moved him I think maybe it
was week two or three and I think it was
week three, and I just thought him, you.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Know, improve and get better. A lot of that due
to just his competitive nature.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
But it'll be some combination of both them, and it
may just based on alignments and matchups. You know, could
look like he's outside or inside. So we're fortunate that
both of them can go in both spots.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Can I ask one more you have a make a
wish show because he's the wrong thing he said he
was in charge. I don't know, make a wish child
here today. I'm just curious, like what that means to you?
And haven't it?

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Yes, we had a new member of the team today,
So Fox Thornhill was here, which was absolutely awesome and
what swagged for him. We kind of met him as
he was he and his family coming into the building
and probably had maybe sixty or seventy people there. We
had some music play and as he came in and
so one of the people he was hoping he was

(04:00):
Jaden and so he was.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
There and he had such cool swag to him.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
He pointed over to him, he walked over, just gave
him a nice head nod, you know what's up, had
sunglasses on and then just now breaking the team down afterwards,
you know, Debo was trying to you know, gave him
a helmet and break the team.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
That's I got it. Man family.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
So he was like already ready. So box Thornhill as
a commander, man does.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
He have swag?

Speaker 1 (04:22):
And it's Uh, it was really cool to be a
part of somebody going through a tough space of you know,
when you're dealing with something as heavy as that as
a child, and like to get a chance to see
him happy and his family happy, his older brother and
his parents like you know, like man, not every profession

(04:43):
gets that, And so to see him on the best
of days when you're going through it, that's a nice
nice thing for the team with the smile. So he
was still outside with the guys just now, So that
made me happy.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Well, this is going to be a bummer of a
segway after that.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
You don't have to go there.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
It's a sort of broader question. When you first got here,
I think you said this would be more of a recalibration.
Do you feel the same now at this point in
the season. Do you still feel like the team.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Is a question, fair question. We're obviously in a tough slump.
I mean, like, you can't deny this, but I don't
feel differently. I don't know. How we're performing does not
make me happy. You know, we're beating ourselves, we're not
hitting the marks that we need to, But that doesn't
change my outlook or my belief I have a sense

(05:39):
that it's about to go again. And I see that
because of practice. I see that because of locker room.
But it does have to take place on the field
to make it.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
That's a big deal.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
But I also love there's some people that are developing,
but it still comes down to the performance on the field.
So I have not changed my mindset on that. Miss
of a tough, tough stretch for US, I have not
changed my.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Mindset on that.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
And you've mentioned Will Harris, but not not having him
out there. What do you guys lose and what have
you seen from the players who have stepped up in
this place?

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Yep? First thing I thought, like the background with Will,
I think some no, but not everybody knows, like from
the cover side, like came in the league as a corner,
you know, who could play inside and play nickel and
then move the safety.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
I love Will's.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Urgency, you know, the importance of it, the detail of it,
Like he loves football. And we're remarking, you know, the
night he got injured, like he hadn't even had the
surge yet, I mean back in this much time, you know,
like he was already saying that that night. It's like
just get the surgery this week, okay, but that kind
of gives you a window to him, you know, about

(06:52):
who he is and what he like. So he's itching
to get back, you know with the team. He's here
doing the rehab. Now, he's hitting the marks that he's
supposed to do. But it's the coverability, it's the urgency
that he plays with. I kind of felt that way
from the whole time he was here, this urgency to
be a part of it. So we definitely miss him.
We're looking forward to getting him back. So as we're

(07:16):
getting closer to that, you know, I like, you know,
the progress that he's making, but that's just a few
of the things that he brings.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
Hey, coach, you mentioned Chris Rodriquez being the captain this week.
When you look at the running game in the beginning
of the season and it seems like you are really
running the ball well, but it's kind of like died
off some What do you think the reason why that
is and what do you want to see this weekend
getting that back again?

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Yeah, we have to don It's a great question and
something that we have to emphasize. And there could be
a matchup where it's tough even to get the yards,
but you have to dig in and keep fighting for them,
knowing that there could be a play pass or you
know the benefit that goes with that. As far as
the you know difference of both, you know, defending the

(08:04):
whole field honestly, you know, defending it up high on
shots down the field, play passes. So having the variety
of both with some balance is big. But the importance
of hanging in staying into it, and it's a big
part of this game for sure. I said earlier, this
is a line of scrimmage game on both sides, and
the running game for us is going to be a
big part of this.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
All three backs.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
Great, you went back to the classroom this week, gaven
the players a little homework assignment. What did you see
from that this week when they came back and went,
you know out As far as applying it in the practice, yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
What may seem small or tweaks are different, could be
as simple as like a meeting with you know, these
two or three positions together, extended walkthroughs where you might
get you know, thirty to forty more reps of something
just to get more clarity. Were insights on it from
the coaching side, Can we narrow things out to make

(09:06):
sure we know the margins are small and so how
can we clearly say these are the plays, these are
the ones?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Can we execute that?

Speaker 1 (09:13):
And so that's a big piece of it, don that
we did to make sure preparation would be as elevated
as we can make it and as.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Funny as it sounds.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Sometimes that's less even though you're elevating and digging in further.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
But that was the case this week.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
But I love that a couple of meetings together this
position group, this position group to increase feedback collaboration. Where
exactly do you see us on this route? Where do
you exactly see you know, the player against this coverage?
And so they're the ones out on the grass And
so that's what I was hoping to see them more
directive language to one another and to make sure that

(09:52):
not just the teaching is good, but the learning is
that they can explain it to one another.

Speaker 6 (09:57):
Hey, coach, as you just mentioned Tinniky, you know this
is it's a tough period for you. Also, how are
you all just managing the tough conversations without fracturing the brotherhood?

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Yeah, good news, I guess candy on some things like
tough conversations are part of it, but it also means
you have to come by somebody, you know, in a
way that you know. It's harder than it has to be,
but you do have to have those conversations about a performance,

(10:31):
a technique, a mindset. Doesn't make the player they're not
happy or a coach happy, but how they respond that's
really what you're looking for. Somebody flies off the handle
or goes, you know, sideways about things, then that's probably
a bigger problem. So like that disappointment, like Okay, I'm

(10:52):
gonna show you that's that's a good conversation in my opinion,
because like all of us are here to win and perform,
and if something's not meeting a standard that we like,
you have to have those tough conversations, as you said,
And but because we have them on.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
A regular basis doesn't mean you know, it's.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Bo he's mad now, you know, Like I have tough
conversations sometimes after wins. You have tough conversation after a
practice to say what the hell was that? You know,
and watch the tape or show an example. And but
I don't try to, you know, do it in a
way that's ever the meaning or that, but like this
is what the performance shows, this is what we have

(11:33):
to do.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
And then the last piece of that, this is the
plan to.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Go fix it. You know, this is the technique. This
is the thing I want you to work on. This
is the skill as opposed to just you know, saying
demoted or this or that.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Like end, here's what we need to go do.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
So I think if you give that kind of feedback
and let the player also or the person that you're
dealing with have their say too, then you come to
some solutions together as we want to see how do
I go figure out how to do that?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Now?

Speaker 6 (12:03):
Have you seen your the quarterback room overall just handled
the change due to the injuries, you know when we
get Jadeen and his market, So have you just.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Seen the whole team?

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Just continuity is probably the hardest part, Candy, as you're
going through things, and so how can they work with
one another to help get that continuity?

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Sometimes at the.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Position the other receivers helping a new receiver, other quarterbacks,
you know, bringing people together, and so that's kind of
I was referring to of like some some groups together
to watch practice, some groups, you know, not separate where
that it's a normal thing where you can really hone
in on the technique, don't know, I also want to
discuss it with these two or three groups together.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
So that's what you do.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
You figure it out, you know, together, And the quarterback
room is one of our strongest players leadership coaching, So
they spend the most time together just by nature of
the position. There's the early mornings, there's the extra time, which,
like the job requires what it requires, you know.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Like it is, that's the job.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
And so the fact that they're able to spend a
lot of good time together helps be honest with one
another and good performances, bad performances things we do to
do more of coaching and playing.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
So it's a good group. It really is. In that
room specifically.

Speaker 7 (13:22):
New coach, we all kind of know like a game
flow obviously matters, and as a deficit grows, offenses tend
to go more towards passing than running. You've mentioned the
importance of kind of trying to stick with the run
even when it's a little bit hard. How does that
conversation flow with you and Cliff on the sideline in
a game to kind of decide like, hey, this is
when we just kind of need to get into our
passing game more.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
Yeah, I think we talk about like stay in the balance,
stay into the balance of what we're going to do.
We hit on some of the things that we liked
during the week.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Have we hit this yet? Have we hit this yet?

Speaker 1 (13:52):
So like as we're going down kind of through a
checklist of things that we want to see and if
we've seen them, okay, is there one to come back
to off of that? So which ones go with one another?
But it's pretty easy in game. Usually it's in between
a series, you know, not during the playtime, but's what's next,
what's next, what's next?

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Halftime?

Speaker 7 (14:11):
Also, and then coach Wick kind of mentioned the increase
and walkthroughs. Yep, I know it's hard to really evaluate it,
and so you get to the game and see what
the fruit is. But just as best you can, like
getting that hands on learning opportunity increased, how do you
feel like that's impacted the locker room?

Speaker 1 (14:26):
That's the goal as players physical learners. There's obviously a
classroom element of philosophy of big picture of it, but
then the physical learning of where you are the space
of that of what that can look like. We're hopeful
that pays dividends for us in all ways. For our team,
we want like aggressiveness but having the discipline to stay

(14:46):
you know, in this pocket of doing things right and
so finding that balance of both is a big deal
for us. Yeah, But like most things, we're going to
keep digging and find some of the small tweaks that
can make a difference, and we're hoping that that specifically
is one that will help us.

Speaker 8 (15:04):
Jordan McGee is obviously be getting some more work lately.
Now that you've been with Random for a year and
a half or so, do you have a sense of, like,
which of the linebacker spots you see him in longer
term and should it be the one in the middle.
Does he just playing the way you're playing him now?
With Bobby on the field, give Jordan enough time for
you to really be able to say if he's in
that spot.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
The good for him is that he plays both positions
for us, Like when we play our nickel defense, there's
two backers, so when you're in that spot, you play both,
you know, as the third you know backer in you know,
in the nickel package. So in practice he plays both.
That's an advantage. Think of it like this way. Ben
as a corner who can play inside and outside, but

(15:46):
you have to practice at both, so it'll end up
at you know, Okay, where is he most at. He's
got speed, he's a good blitzer, he's got you know,
played square.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
So I don't know if it's the spot as much, but.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
The fact that he's doing both jobs now gives you
a lot of comfort to know, like as we're developing
him that you know, he's somebody that.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
We would we're going to be leaning on hard.

Speaker 9 (16:09):
Obviously he's the head coach. You assume responsibility for the
entire operation. But I'm curious, as a defensive minded guy,
to what extent of the defensive issues bothered you and
has it changed or is there any kind of inclination
to be more involved on that side of the ball
as some of the issues.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Yeah, so would say like on a I can you
say the first like how much does it bother me?

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Is that? Like yeah, like ten out of ten? Like
bother me as the head coach?

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Like the biggest thing like I want to be play style,
you know, or philosophy of how we want to play
and so at that part when I don't get that
like we want obviously, it agitates me on any of
the faces. And then the skill development of the players.
Obviously that's an important part to me because if I
can help develop the guys, we can you know, find
our way back. But as far as like the involvement, yeah,

(16:59):
I'm involved in, and I want to see us increase
you know, tackling and takeaways and some fundamentals that would
go with that. And then as we're going through it,
had heard us say earlier, can we simplify some things?
Can we make it more you know, so we can
process and hit and do things better. And so that's
really where I push everybody to go to defensively, especially

(17:23):
but all three phases really, But that's where I'm leaning
in the most best, honestly, like where I.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
Normally lean in the most.

Speaker 6 (17:31):
With you guys having a long travel week next week,
how does that kind of impact how you handle guys
like Jaden and others who are still sort of nursing injuries.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Why not.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Yeah, the guys that can would be there with us
if there was you know, some guys that would stay
back due to you know, certain rehab.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Or that thing.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
But you know, we'll hit that kind of like as
we get through into Monday morning, and then there'll be
obviously some therapists that would be back here, but not
everybody will go. But we'll kind of wait till we
get through Monday, and then you kind of organize who's staying,
who's going, and leaning from that.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Alright, see you guys up to
