Speaker 1 (00:04):
All right, Friday, right somewhere, I hitch on the captains first,
and kind of the theme I have these guys was intentional, consistent, tough,
and uh, opportunity and delivery and so. On offense, it'd
be Luke McCaffrey, on defense, it'll be Kin Law and
on special teams Jake Martin. So three guys without represent that.

(00:27):
So team had a strong week of practice. You know,
all week, had a chance to look at everything, what
we liked, we wanted to evaluate and dug in hard
on that and all three phases.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
So we're excited to go play status for Terry Deebo.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Terry and Debo both have had good weeks and man,
we're excited to get them back on the field. Yes
before I also go to players will out, will be
Jaden and yesterday Colson yankov Injrew's hamstrings, so both of
those guys will be out. Was the one that we
just introduced today and checked today and yeah, he's dealing

(01:06):
with a toe that's bothered him. So it's kind of
working through that to get him into that spot. But
I'll know more over the next day and a half
and then what have you seen from them this week
that maybe you feel better about coming off that game
last week. Just the intensity of going against one another
at practice and you've heard me say it, John, but
like to find the attitude to get one another better.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
I felt that.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
And every good tough practices have that where guys are
battling and digging for it and going against each other.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
But that's what I felt and saw. It's not a
stat or a.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Specific numeric thing, but it is the good on good
going against each other. We did that more than normal,
so it had a lot of value going into the week,
and it's felt strong, competitive tough, you know, for three
days in a row.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
And I know I like that and it was good
to see that from them.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
What are those two head back to the offense for
you guys?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
That a lot, I think in different ways Nikki and
so much of you know, their games are similar but different.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
In other words, we're like on some of the.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Deep plays with Terry on play passes and over routes
and things that are shots down the field where Deebo
has some catch and run as well to it, so
they both run all of the routes and the system,
but just being in there and how they can make plays.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
It's definitely a big deal.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
That also affects other parts of the offense and running
game and other things to go with it, so matchups.
So yeah, I'm excited to get these guys back into
the mix. And they are too, because you know, missing
and not being in it it's hard, and so they're excited.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
And as you've gone through almost this first half of
the season dealt with the injuries, have there been parts
of the team where you know, maybe thought they were
deeper going in and then not quite as deep others
that you learned are actually deeper. There? Is it if
you learned anything like that going.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
In from the roster? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, you don't know where your death is until you're tested, right,
And I think one of the spots that that I
felt like now is there, and I think some of
it's due to to Luke and to Jalen is that receiver.
Because when you get tested, are you ready when that
opportunity comes. I felt like that would be an example
of those two. It wasn't a surprise. I knew what

(03:34):
we had with Marcus, you know, from that side. Just
kind of going back, you know, through the offense and
where we've been banged up on on the defensive side
with three ends. That's I guess different because it went
like in layers down and we're still in the middle
of that to go. But I do know that, like

(03:54):
I like the way the guys are attitude and going,
and you do gain from it. It's not ideal at all,
but there is like experience that happens, and you do
find out a lot through the years. There definitely been
people that I have coached when the opportunity came and like, Okay,
that was the time he started playing and making an impact,
and then it carries over, not always in the same year, Nikki,
but knowing okay, we have one there, you don't look

(04:17):
for that like it kind of changes the trajectory of
their careers because they establish it, and so I think
all of that matters.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Hey, Dan, Bobby never leaves the field typically. He obviously
came off a little bit at the end of the
last game when you guys pulled some guys out when
he goes off the field, who took over the the
like Jordangee And is that just kind of how that
would be if Bobby's not in there, whoever is in
that spot?

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Correct? Yep? Jordan would be the next one.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yep, and sort of off topic, Andy Reid is like
famously takes them for training camp elsewhere, one of the
few teams it still does that. I know in the past,
I think you've said, hey, maybe in a perfect world
that would be something to do. After having gone through
this for two years, do you have is that kind
of where you're at and what do you kind of
make up to How much did that have to do
with the chief success? They have a lot of other things,

(05:02):
but that ability to get.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Away, yeah, I think it helps. I do also like
we try to modify that so to speak. Then if
we can take some trips together. I think the year
before we had two, so we made them into like
four days, so that's like an eight day span to
go this year to New England for a longer stretch.
So I do think that helps, you know, to go
away and do some of that. So if you can

(05:24):
go away, another alternative is you know, doing some of
the scrimmages and that type of thing. So I think
those are like your two best options to go about it.
With the renovations here, going away tod scrimmage against some
other teams was the best options for us, Hey.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
Coach, and getting off this skit, what are some things
that you really drilled this week over and over to
the team.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
I thought at the high level of things like the
turnover margin for us to be sitting in the minus here,
that that shows we have not turned the corner on
some things.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
So because that's effectable sides.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
And the explosive plays, us creating them, us limiting them,
and playing faster.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
So those would be the things that I drilled.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Down on from the high level top down that affects
both offense and defense. Playing faster has to do with volume,
it has to do with processing speed, things that we
can really execute and hall ass on both phases. So
those would be the three things you know that that
came out of a lot of the studies and with.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
The secondary with the explosive plays, with the communication, have
you seen that be cleaned up a little bit this
week in practice?

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Yes, and quite honestly, like I'm glad that you brought
that up. It already has been better on something. So
on the explosives, early I thought the communication wasn't as good,
but I thought the staff and the players have kind
of hit onto that to make it better. Some calls
are now limited in terms of volume like okay less
and doing it better, But it wasn't communication and related

(07:01):
in the last two games, you know, from a standpoint
of limiting those. So I do feel like that's gotten
better for sure, not to be confused with good enough,
but I wanted to make sure I was clear on
that that they have adapted in that space.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm ready now, hey, coach.

Speaker 6 (07:19):
Earlier in the week, you mentioned having some conversations with
players where you said that you know, some things may
be expensive, but this is still what you all need
to do. So in those conversations, had there been any
moments where that was a more difficult conversation and just
how do you handle that?

Speaker 1 (07:34):
It wasn't difficult. You don't go at it in a
way that you know makes it. But we've got a
lot of good guys, Kenny, So I think the first
thing is like, I got some things I think that
can make us better, and like, initially, what's the response, Yeah,
I want to know. I want to find out more.
And it could mean a technique that you're playing or not.
It could mean a certain style. So sometimes the smallest

(07:57):
tweaks doesn't mean it can't have a bigger result.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
And so yeah, the best of the best.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
If there's something that they can do to do it better,
any of us would want to know that, like the feedback,
but it doesn't have to come you know, at them
where they're not receiving it right, because if they're not,
then the feedback was all for bullshit if they're not
going to apply it. And I also wanted that from them,
you know, if there was a certain technique or a
call or something that could change.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
I also wanted that feedback.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
To make sure that it's a two way street, you know,
in terms of us playing good, the execution is players
and coaches, and I want to make sure I was
clear with them on that too.

Speaker 6 (08:35):
And we've often talked about the brotherhood and all that,
and so what from your perspective as a head coach,
what is this current state of the brotherhood right now?
I thought I put you in a skid.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
So yeah, I think when it's going really well, that's
the time that you don't lean in on it and
you don't find out a lot. It's the times that
it gets the hardest that you lean in on it together.
And what I've seen from practice I'm pleased knowing that
this is the things I was calling on for the week.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Would I be able to see that, would be able
to deliver on that.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
And so during the week there's brutal honesty that goes
with it, and I want to see them respond. And
if a team or a person doesn't, then you have
red flags to say, Okay, you hit the big emergency
break and nothing happened.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
You know, you want to see players and people respond.
And so what I saw was a response and.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Consistency would take care of things to go up and
up and up. And so that's what I'm looking for
from the team, because over the last two weeks it
certainly hasn't been to the standard that we want. So
we addressed it, we say it, but I also want
to see the response. And the first part that I
could see was at practice, and so for three days I've.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Liked what I've seen.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Now that has to carry into the ball game for
us to play faster, more consistent, and more to capture
our style that we.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Want to be.

Speaker 7 (09:59):
He in times of adversity, it's human nature for some
people to get more reactive than proactive. Sure, how do
you make sure that you and your staff are staying
proactive to stay ahead of what's to come as well
as fixing what's already happened.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, I think a number of ways, David. And the
first one is like, as the leaders, you have to
be in front and you have to set the course
of what's going to do and what needs to change,
but you also have to be the one that is
ready to adapt when you need to. Second part of that,
I think as adversity comes, you want to see the
response and the changes that you put in to say,

(10:33):
are these changes being effective? This is how we're going
to go about something. This is the change that we're
going to make. Those are like the things that are
at the front of my mind.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Can you repeat? The second part of it.

Speaker 7 (10:43):
Just just staying proactive and not allowing yourself to get
stuck in a reactive mode.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
I think the emotion part of it is like that
happens to me and probably to most people post game
right to there, and you want to dig in and
then eventually it's like, okay, digging in for the purpose
of finding the solutions. It's one thing to Okay, here's
what happened, and the next part underneath that is to say,
and here's what we're going to do about it. And
I think that's the part that you want to see

(11:08):
and how they respond to that. Just bitching about it
or talking about it doesn't change it in the way
that you want to. So that's my space to say,
all right, and this is what we're actually going to do.
So that's why I like referring to Candy's question, like
to see the response at practice of what we're calling on.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Okay, that's that's a good sign.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
And tightness and adversity that can cause that with people.
I've seen it and I've told that to everybody and
like want it badly and coaches tighter, players tighter, and
like that's the opposite of playing free and aggressive and fast.
And so how do you eliminate that. You work at
first the mindset, but the techniques and sometimes if that's

(11:46):
less volume to play faster and more sometimes use the
word like free, Like it's not like recess, you know,
but there is a block that can take place that
if you're not ready that like, hey, man, like it
has to be clear minded to attack and focus where
you can not take long to process.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
So that's part of where I was at for the week.

Speaker 7 (12:05):
And then when Chris Jones, we obviously can see the
physical kind of presence that he has on the field,
but how much of battling a guy like that is
also mental from a resilient standpoint, but then also the
chess match football IQ standpoint.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, because playing against a player like him, there's gonna
be plays where he'll win the down. You're gonna win
the down. And that's part of like ball and playing
against good players, whether it's defensive line, defensive end, you know,
any of the spots, receiver, quarterback, et cetera. But you
do have to account to say, hey man, and there's
gonna be battles and matchups that you're gonna win on
this too. So he's rare in terms of size and

(12:39):
length and speed for a big guy, so you want
to make sure where he's at, what looks can you have.
But he's been pretty accustomed to that, you know, through
his career.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Like he's one of the people.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
That you have to circle during the week to say,
this is a player that can really affect the game.
They've got a nice system with you know, different fronts,
pressure design, and so he's a big part of that
for sure.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Just in terms of the play style.

Speaker 8 (13:04):
Dan, with the injuries, you described it earlier this season
as like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, And
I know that there's attrition every year, but I'm curious,
is there anything that has been different so far this
year or felt different to you as you've tried to
kind of put together those pieces.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
I think the early part of the season maybe just
the volume of them. You know, oftentimes it's okay, one
here and one there, but I think the volume of
the early part was probably the most challenging to put
it together. If you have time, you can kind of
space it out to organize how we'll align, how we play.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
You can't call.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
It in quite the same way, and so I think
that sometimes can be a challenging part as well.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
But I think the volume.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Early probably made it different than most times that you
go through it just like that, you know, I mean
by volume, like the amount of them.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
That's it, all right. I will see you guys on Monday.
