Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, what's up everybody? Well, let's get rolling. I
thought first thing i'd do, I'd give you some guys
that will rule out today. That'll be John Bates, Terry McLaurin,
Noah Brown, and Jayden Daniels. And I know you'll want
to discuss with Jayden, he's working incredibly hard round the
clock to get back. Ultimately, doctors haven't cleared him just yet.
(00:24):
He's absolutely doing everything he possibly can. So Marcus is
going to start again, which leads me into captains and
so on the offense it will be Marcus and defensively
Kwan Martin and on special teams Tressway. These three have
a tremendous impact on the entire building and legit heavy
hitters on our team in lots of ways, so we'd
(00:45):
follow these three anywhere. So glad to open it up
and get rolling with you guys.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
With Jaden, what is it that you guys still aren't seeing.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Full enough medical John on that side, so this is
just doctors on that space to go. Jaden's working as
hard as he can to go, that just haven't cleared
him just yet. And with with Terry, what's the level
of concern that it's is this something few weeks you think,
or what's the level of concern? Yeah, as a quad injury,
just again working as hard as he can to come
(01:13):
back from it, and he's putting all the work in.
So I would say he's week to week as we're
hitting it and see what next week brings and where
he's at. And most of all, you guys knowing that
when it turns and it goes quicker, So we'll just
see where he gets into by next week.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
What have you learned about Marcus over the year and
a half you've been with him.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah, I think I've learned about leading from him, when
to lean in, when to watch, when to give the support,
and like he's very thoughtful and so I think there's
a part of leading that goes into that of when
to lean in and speak up, when to watch let
somebody else, you know, assume that space. I think that's
one of the rare traits you know, that a person
(01:55):
can have, of leaning in but also knowing when to
push someone else into that. But I think the work ethic,
the perseverance is what I've learned about him. He's dealt
with injury, setbacks and just his attitude. He's so consistent
Nikki and what he does. That's what I've learned about him.
The approach, it's just it doesn't waiver, and that's something
(02:19):
that I really respect about him.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
He's been pretty open about the anxiety, the fears he's
faced and dealing with the adversity has in his career.
How did you see him kind of process everything with
his first start last week and now coming into this week.
How has that been fro him from your perspective, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
I think you have to go through those spaces and
then lean in to know. Okay, man. The discussions we
had was me, you man, that's more than enough and
you don't have to overtry or put an extra spot
on it. And so I was very proud of him
for that, being able to share and like peer to
peer to others, like that's a really powerful thing, and
(02:56):
so sharing perspective, sharing insights with one another. You know,
I think that's just as big as it gets. And
I think everybody saw the clip last year when I
think it might have even been against Atlanta. We're only
player to player sometimes that's it can be so impactful.
As much as a coach, especially on game day, gives
you the truth. We're hard on these guys in practice,
(03:17):
but on game day we're their biggest supporters to make
it as hard as we can out on the practice field.
But sometimes in between that white lines, just hearing the
familiar voice of a teammate, Hey man, this is what
you have to go do right now. Like it carries
extra and I think that wasn't meant for everybody to hear,
and it was typical of what he would say.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Hey, coach, how have you seen the pass rush flourish
in these first three weeks.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, we're working hard at that donna to find different matchups.
I think the players have done a better job using stunts,
how to manipulate that bomb being here, Jake Martin being here,
I think da inside and outside, that's all of that's
been a part of it. We still feel like we've got,
you know, many levels to go with that, but we
like that the communication, the continuity of those guys working
(04:04):
at it together. I feel like the arrows going up
different quarterbacks, different styles, where are they, where do they scramble?
Where's the protection? So I like I feel like we're
getting smarter as we're going, and that's a big piece,
you know, to keep continuing to practice teams.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Could you talk a little bit about that. Last week
they had one hundred and some yards in the kickoff
and also in the punt return. What are you seeing there.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, as difficult as it was at the Green Bay game.
On offense defense, I thought we missed some of our identity.
I didn't feel like we missed it. On special teams.
I thought we had some good returns. We had some
opportunities to do it. So it is one of the
stronger parts of us. We've gotten to the spot that
and we've learned that each of the phases were all
(04:51):
connected to one another. And it's just playing ball man.
I'm a receiver, I'm played teams man, I'm this ballplayer.
And so when that happens and you're not just in
island yourself and I just do this or I just
do that, and like everybody's down for whatever it takes
to go, I think that's when the good things can
take place. Izzo's right there in the front of it,
Like this is the type of guy like you'd want
(05:12):
to play for. He's got energy. But I love also
seeing the development of like Jordan McGee and Tyler Owens,
like they've established themselves their presence, their speed, their physicality,
and there'll be others, you know, that will grow from it,
beloors in the middle of that, and they help bring
the next ones along. And I think if we can
continue into that space of continuing to develop people, the
(05:34):
field position battles are going to be a big one
and our special teams will be right in the middle
of that, including trust too, you know, in terms of
can we punt and keeping backed up into those spots.
We had one with Louise Antonio Hamilton, you know, caught
a punt that was downed. So all of those things
they add up, and so some of the margins in
the game. You hear me talk about us turnover margin,
tackling margin, but winning field position that's a big piece
(05:56):
of it. And the return game both sides. It'll be
a factor again this week. I really feel like fourth downs, offense, defense,
on special teams, the punt, punt return they're gonna be
right in the front and center of this game too.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
Hey, coach, So so far this season, in the first
three weeks, you've had two rookies get the PEPSI honor
of Rookie of the Week, So what can you say
about this draft class and what you've seen so far.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Well, I would say it's nice to share it around
a little bit. Last year we just you know, one
guy just took it the whole time. It didn't share
it around. So it shows that the versatility the class
and they're ready. I think it shows their willingness to
put it all out there to say I'm ready to
contribute to be a part of this. Whether that's through Bill,
(06:41):
that's through Jalen, there'll be others. But it's a great
way to express themselves and demonstrate it that they can
be counted on and they can be leaned in on.
Although they're young in their careers, they're they're ready and
when somebody gets to demonstrate that and get you recognized
for it, obviously we're all pumped for them.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
And yesterday I asked Cliff about coach Anthony Lynn and
what he's done to prepare the running back room. So
from your perspective, what can you share as well?
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, Anthony's incredible story for those that don't know enough
about him. Resilient, he's tough, he's demanding, but he's also
somebody that played it, has lived it. He's got leadership
experience from play caller to head coach, so at the position,
step by step by step, like he just doesn't miss
any of those. How do we drill it? How do
(07:27):
we get to the next spot? Oftentimes with running backs
it's pass protection.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Where are they?
Speaker 1 (07:31):
So Anthony very detailed into that space. So we're really
fortunate that he's here, not just as the running back coach,
but just you know on our staff what he stands for.
Speaker 6 (07:42):
Dan, you didn't mention Bill as part of the injury report.
I'm sure we'll see that later. But if he were
to be out, he missed obviously the last two practices.
What does that do for a room that's already shorthanded?
What about you guys, you haven't practiced, squad? How do
they might factor in?
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yep, he did a good job today. Yep, good practice.
Speaker 6 (07:59):
Yeah, so that sounds positive then for okay, then at
least to have that already missing so many guys, I
know this is the next man up situation, but how
do you kind of do you look at this and like,
oh man, like where do return ors say, Hey, this
is this is what we practice for, this is why
we have depth, like.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
In general, yeah, yeah, for sure. I think I don't
talk to the team about it a lot, and the
reason being is I wanted, you know, when the moments come,
I wanted to prepare for that Ben as a certainty,
not a possibility. You know, whether it's you know, who
knows what position. You know, could have been running back
or tight end or receiver, whatever that looks like. That's
(08:38):
the job. That's why you're here, and you get those chances,
and when they come, you want to make sure you
don't overtry it. I wanted this so badly. I need
to perform at a certain space. Play calling wise, I
think Cliff and Joe they recognize how to feature the
players of the things they can do. It's not just
rinse and repeat, same play, same ways. It's how do
(08:58):
you feature the players and the thing that they do best.
And I thought Cliff did a really good job of
that last week. And that's our roles to make sure
it's not everybody's in the same spot. So how do
you feature the guys? And that's why the practice reps
really count then, because you want to make sure that
this player has been in that scenario, that situation, and
how do we match up and that's you know, on
(09:20):
all sides, it's Will Harris, it's others that say, okay,
how do you go into these spaces and may not
be in the exact same way it was with Eckler,
not in the exact same way, and so you just
keep digging.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Man hey GoF new Coach. Just to kind of build
on the running back conversation last week, you guys were
able to feature a good amount of guys carrying the ball,
and each of them was relatively effective as as soon
as they got like their first carry, like I think
Chris's was five yards. Jeremy McNichols obviously was a really
good one. Bill, even Deebo can get a spot carry
here and there. What goes into a running back of
(09:54):
ball carry being able to kind of be effective right
from their early carries and not need that kind of
runway to get kind of rolling.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, it's a good question. And I think it also
helps in the system too. And here's why it's not
you know, one runner all the time getting his feel
getting into that space to go. So knowing that you
may be in, you may be out, you know, depending
on the you know, what's called onto that space. And
so I'm comfortable with us using a rotation of guys
(10:25):
as we're starting. Sometimes it may work out in a game. Man,
this guy's hot, Let's let's push it. Man, Let's give
them some more chances. Other times, stay into the process
of rolling through. They also have some factors on teams,
so I think that can help as well, knowing, you know,
as they're working through that that's a factor. But we're
comfortable right now sharing the load. It's not a number
(10:46):
counter this one split it up evenly, but we're comfortable
with that because we really have, you know, faith and
trust in what they're doing. Who knows, it may sort
itself out, you know, as the more that we play,
But right now, I'm comfortable with that.
Speaker 8 (11:00):
Hey, coach Quinn, you know, so far this season, obviously
dealing with all the injuries, you've had so many different
guys step up from backups and third stringers in so
many different positions. What gives you confidence that that will continue?
And how impressed are you that, you know, from top
to bottom of this froster people have been able to
step into those roles.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Yeah. I don't spend a lot of time talking about it.
I think it leans back into our standard of you know,
what we want and how we want to play. If
you're in the game, you're the starter at the moment,
and so that's just how we play. It doesn't mean
we're going to be, you know, playing exactly the same way,
but these are the things we're counting on you to do,
and so it is part of, you know, our game.
(11:41):
When the adversity comes, I think we're equipped for that.
We expect it. And so maybe early on in my
coaching career, you want it to go just this way.
I think as you go, you know it starts this way,
and now you adjust and in the game you adjust
and you're ready. And I think those contingency plans help
when at practice, you know, you might just saw somebody
in today that doesn't normally get a rep and you're, okay,
(12:03):
good catch, good play in a game rep. And so
he's demonstrating, if called I'm ready, even though he may
not be up this game. And so I think you're,
as a ballplayer, trying to put some cash into the
bank to demonstrate that to the coaches, to one another,
to say, if called upon, you know, I'm ready to
get down. And it doesn't mean you will be every week.
(12:24):
But it does show that there was a play yesterday
a fantastic catch, and I showed that in the team
meeting today where a defensive player got beat. Well, that's
to me, that's like, that's absolutely leveling up. And so
we just try to coach the whole crew and knowing
that it's probably a certainty you're going to be ready
at some point.
Speaker 8 (12:43):
And just specifically with the wide receiver room with Terry
and Noah both still being out this week. Obviously I've
seen what debo can do. How critical of a moment
is this for guys like Jalen Lane and Luke McCaffrey
and Chris Moore maybe some of the other guys that
might be getting.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Called up right, And I think they're all part of it,
you know, like we have a real system that we
believe in and they've got experience in it. They know
what to do, how to do it, and so they're
ready for that, like for Chris and you know, Luke
and like I said, Jalen and others like man, they
have put in work. So it's now a matter of like, man,
go go run this system like you know how, you
don't have to do things differently just be you fully turned.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Up, not to go back to Jaden, but.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
But we're going to. But we're going to understood.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
He said in the press conference on Wednesday that he
was feeling good and he didn't think he was being impacted.
I'm curious how much of a factor is that, Like
how the guy says he's feeling in these sorts of conversations.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah, really just we kind of lean into the medical
side on that. So for him, I'm not surprised that's
the response also from the work that he's putting in.
So I'm not surprised that he would say, man like
I am feeling good and feeling ready, but he has
this feels like it's around the clock. He's been ready
to put all the work in that he needs to. Uh.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Jayden said he watched most of last Sunday's game up
in a box. I was wondering if there's any reason
behind that and if he might do that again.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Yeah, he and the teammates that didn't play. That's like
pretty standard for us. And so just some time away
like this it might work. It really hard Saturday in
a rehab and knowing they're going back at it again
first thing Monday, morning, those four hours on the feet,
we just wanted to be the support. They're in the
locker room with the guys and then I suppose just
having you know, four hours on their feet. That's just
(14:36):
how we do it. Do you have some we can
just close it. I know NICKI does. Of course he does.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Since you.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
We do all right, Thanks everybody,
