(00:01):
Hello and welcome to theConfidence in God podcast.
I am your host, Julie McGhghy, and our goal today is to help
you walk with confidence in God.
In today's episode, we're goingto talk about how we can have
more confidence in God's loveand protection.
We'll look at eight scripturesthat help build that confidence.
(00:21):
But before we do, are you aperson who sometimes finds you
lack confidence in God?
Do you have faith that he is allhe says he is and will do all he
says he will do, but at the sametime, you're not confident that
he's going to do those thingsfor or through you?
If so, then I have a wonderfulresource for you.
It's called Five Steps toExperience More Confidence in
(00:43):
God, and you can get itinstantly by going to confidence
in god.com or clicking the linkin the show notes.
Before we get to the scriptures,I want to share something most
parents will relate to, and evenif you're not a parent, if
you've been around children, youprobably can relate to it as
(01:04):
well.
Then when we get to thescriptures, we'll have a better
understanding of God's love andprotection.
I have three children who areall grown now and have given me
eight grandchildren.
If you have multiple children orhave been around many children,
I'm sure you have likelyencountered one like my youngest
son.
(01:25):
I was always very careful when Itook my children into a store
when they were young.
My youngest son in particularloved to sneak away and hide
when we were in stores, so Ialways held his hand to keep him
with me, keep him from gettinglost and to protect him from
danger.
Now, sometimes my son would walkwith me while calmly holding my
(01:47):
hand, feeling secure in mypresence.
But more often than not, he'dstruggle against my holds so he
could look around and see whoelse was in the store.
He'd like to see if there weretoys or candy around or if there
was a cool place to run andhide.
Occasionally he would struggleagainst me and get loose or, I
(02:12):
must confess, maybe I'd gottendistracted by looking at
something, or dealing with thecashier or something of that
nature, and then off he'd go torun and hide.
As Christians, we often forgetthat God holds us by the hand.
He does so for the same reasonsI held my son's hand when
walking through the store (02:32):
to
protect us from wandering off
from him, from getting lost orbeing exposed to danger.
As long as we are walkingalongside God, lovingly holding
his hand, we enjoy his presenceand protection.
When we forget though, that Godholds us by the hand, we often
(02:57):
begin losing confidence in him.
I've talked to many people whosomehow think even though they
know that they are saved bygrace and not by works, that
they are not good enough, thatthey don't do enough or they're
going to just slip right out oftheir salvation, out of their
relationship with God.
(03:18):
So as we turn to the scriptures,we'll see that although he will
let us walk away from him, hedoes not casually let us slip
away from him.
We will first see how Godstabilizes us in our walk with
God, and then we'll see how hewatches and guides us.
(03:39):
Through God's word, we will seewhy we can have confidence in
him.
I am going to share three Psalmsthat give us a picture of how
god stabilizes us in our walkwith him, and I'll share a verse
in the New Testament thatassures us that God didn't stop
doing that in the Old Testament.
(04:01):
He still does it for us today.
Psalms 37, verses 23 and 24tells us that God orders our
steps and delights in our way,but more importantly, he holds
us with his hand so that when wefall, and we will sometimes
(04:23):
fall, we are not utterly castdown, meaning we do not lose our
salvation.
Psalm 18 verse 32 explains thatGod strengthens us and makes our
way perfect.
He has not set us on a rockytreacherous path with many
stumbling blocks to make us slipand fall.
(04:44):
In fact, according to verse 36of that same psalm, he broadens
the path that we walk on inorder to ensure that we don't
slip.
Psalm 73 verse 23 reveals Godholds us by our right hand.
Now stay with me a few moreminutes and we'll talk about why
(05:05):
it is important to know that Godholds us by our right hand.
And then there's that NewTestament verse 1 Corinthians 10
13 that assures us that God didnot stop stabilizing his people
in the Old Testament times.
He still does it for us today.
(05:26):
In this verse, the Apostle Paulreassures us that when we are
tempted, and we will be tempted, god is faithful and he will
provide a way for us to stand upunder the temptation.
He does not leave us to our ownstrength and intellect to find
ways to escape temptation.
(05:49):
Let's also remember that Godguides us and watches us.
He doesn't just let us wanderaround in the dark, searching
for our way to Him.
Instead through his word, heilluminates our path.
In Psalm 1 19 1 0 5, thePsalmist describes God's word as
(06:10):
a lamp to our feet and a lightto our path.
God ensures that we can find ourway by following his light.
The path that he is lighting forus is the path of life and
righteousness where we findfullness of joy and pleasures
forevermore in his presence.
(06:31):
Yet, in those times when we feellike we are walking in darkness,
we need not fear evil becauseGod is still with us and he
comforts us as King David wrotein Psalm 23, 4.
God does not leave us in thedark times of our lives.
Psalm 1 21 verses seven andeight lets us know god watches
(06:56):
over us.
He knows our coming and goingand keeps us from harm.
And according to Psalm 32, 8,he's guiding us with his eye.
He's instructing us and teachingus where we should walk.
Now if you're keeping trackthat's seven scriptures, and I
promised you eight.
(07:16):
So I have one more scripture toshare that will help us envision
why it is so important to knowthat God holds us by the right
hand.
Psalm 63 8 declares that it isGod's right hand that upholds
us.
So we have Psalm 73 23 revealingthat he holds us by the right
(07:39):
hand.
And Psalm 63, 8 declaring thathe upholds us with his right
hand.
Just like I held my son's handwhen we went into stores, god
holds your hand.
He does so for the same reasonsthat I held my son's hand: to
(08:00):
keep you with him, to keep youfrom getting lost and to protect
you from danger.
And that danger may come in theform of temptation.
Just as when I held my son'shand and he could still look
around the store, when God holdsyou by the hand, you can also
get distracted by looking aroundfreely and focusing on the
(08:22):
things of this world that seemto be very enticing.
But if you are determined to getaway from God and go explore
more fully the things of thisworld, you can pull your hand
out of his and God will notfight you.
He is a gentle God and he givesyou the choice to follow him or
(08:43):
to walk away.
There is even more reason forconfidence in God.
He goes a step further than Idid for my own son.
Psalm 63 8 again tells us thatGod upholds us by his right
hand.
If he holds your hand the way Iheld my son's hand, which was my
(09:03):
right hand, holding his lefthand, or vice versa, walking
side by side, then you canfreely look around and see what
beautiful, enticing things arearound you.
Or maybe you'll see many thingsthat need your attention, and
these things are not necessarilybad things, sinful things, maybe
(09:24):
the laundry, paying bills, purchasing a new car perhaps, or
dreaming of that new home you'dlike to buy.
You can look around very freelyand even pull away if you wish,
but God holds your right hand inhis right hand.
When that happens, you are nolonger standing side by side.
(09:46):
You are standing face to facewith God.
He is positioning you to lookinto his eyes like when you
shake someone's hand.
Why would he do that?
Because as we noted in Psalm 32,8, God guides us with his eye.
(10:07):
He positions us to look into hisface, so we are less likely to
be distracted by the things ofthis world.
We are less likely to struggleand pull our hands from his.
Now, we've covered a lot in thisshort period of time.
Let me summarize these eightverses really quickly.
You can have confidence that Godis going to keep you in
(10:30):
relationship with him as long asyou want to walk with him.
He holds your hand, he lightsyour path, he watches over you
and guides you so that you donot unintentionally fall from
salvation, from yourrelationship with God.
He even positions you, so youare looking into his face.
(10:53):
So that he can easily guide youwith his eye.
Pull this all together and wecan be confident that he loves
you more than you love him, andhe wants you to be with him.
He wants that so much that JesusChrist died for you to make it
(11:13):
possible.
You can walk confidently withour Lord and not fear your every
wrong move.
