Tonya Shellnutt (00:10):
Welcome to
Courageous Overcomers.
I'm your host, Tonya Shellnutt.
I'm so glad that you guys arewith us today.
We have been focusing ongardening and pruning and
weeding and blooming these lastfew weeks, and so we're going to
finish up this theme this weekwith the harvest is coming.
(00:30):
Galatians 6, 9 says this let usnot grow weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we willreap a harvest if we do not give
up Galatians 6, 9.
I want everyone to rememberthat growth takes time.
After all the planting, theblooming, the pruning, there's
(00:54):
one thing left, guess what it is.
It's something that doesn'thappen overnight.
It's waiting, and growthdoesn't happen overnight, and
neither does healing.
So we know that waiting seasonscan feel like abandonment, but
they're actually seasons ofintimacy where God pulls us
close away from the performanceand applause and roots us in
(01:18):
deeper trust, and I'll share atime where I experienced this.
I think it's important tohighlight with y'all, but we
made a move from Montana toSouth Carolina in 2015.
And there's only been a coupletimes in my life where it was
(01:40):
blatant quiet from the Lord andI was like, okay, did we make
the right decision?
Is this what we should havedone?
And I struggled for two yearson this issue, and it was just
two years of quiet, feeling likeI wasn't hearing from the Lord.
I felt, you know, we had leftour church family.
(02:02):
Rich and I were very involvedin our church and we left our
church family.
I.
We came here, we just couldn'tseem to connect, and it was.
It was really, really one of themore tougher times in my season
, and God just kept saying befaithful, keep going, keep going
.
I didn't want to.
I'm like like what is happeninghere.
(02:24):
This is is not no good, but Ijust want to encourage you that
this episode is about holding onto hope when you're in the
middle of it and you're in thewaiting room between obedience
and outcome, because that'swhere we were and for us, I will
say this that I wouldn't bewhere I'm at now with my current
(02:45):
employer.
I'm so very, very blessed to bedoing what I'm doing.
My husband would not own hisown company right now and be a
business partner with anothergodly man if we didn't wait.
And so I know that it's hard tobe in the weight, but there's a
(03:06):
lot that happens when we'rewaiting, and so what do you
think the hardest part of theweight is for you, right?
now.
Is it the silence, the doubt, the fatigue?
What is it?
I will say, for me, the silencewas the hardest part, because I
felt like you make this hugemove and you're like, okay, did
(03:26):
we make the right thing for ourfamily?
And it was so hard, but I seeGod using it now, but in the
middle of it it was really hard.
So the action step for you isto write a letter to your future
self 90 days from now and I'mgoing to do this too, because I
think this is important.
(03:46):
I want you to describe theharvest you're praying for, the
healing you're hoping to see,and how you'll stay faithful in
the waiting and keep itsomewhere visible as a
declaration that God is working, even when it's quiet.
The other thing that I want usto focus on is that God grows us
(04:08):
in silence, so you won't alwayssee the evidence of your
efforts right away, butunderground, something sacred is
happening.
And for us, you know, havingleft our, you know my family,
our church family, and it waslike, well, what is God doing
here?
And it really helped, rich andI I mean, we have always been
(04:31):
relying upon each other anyway, but it really, I think, helped
us in just drawing close andwhen we think about the
wintering season in nature, youknow everything looks dead, but
the roots are strengthening andhealing is the same thing.
So what's happening in yourroots?
Your foundations arestrengthening, your habits are
(04:53):
shifting, lies are beingreplaced with truth and old
wounds are being closed withcare.
And just because it's quietdoesn't mean it's barren.
And you know again, having tobe patient in the quiet, having
to be patient in the waiting.
It can be very difficult, but Ijust want to encourage you to
(05:14):
not give up, to continue to leaninto it.
Don't become impatient with it.
Just ask the Lord.
Well, what do I need to learnduring this time?
Mark 4, 26 through 27 says thisthe kingdom of God is like a man
who scatters seed night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up.
The seed spouts and grows, andhe does not know how.
(05:36):
What a great verse.
What a great verse.
It's just an encouragement.
For, as we were talking about, you know blooming and rooting
and pruning and weeding and allof those things.
Just stay faithful.
So I want you to start a rootjournal the next seven days.
I want you to jot down oneunseen way God is working in you
, whether it's a mindset shift,a healing choice or a truth
(06:00):
you're clinging to, becauseroots matter.
The next thing is and this is soimportant I kind of already
alluded to it, they're allreally important, but this is
great Don't quit before thefruit.
So there's going to be dayswhere you feel like the process
isn't working, and that's whenthe enemy is going to whisper
(06:20):
look, nothing's changing.
Why bother?
Why are you doing this?
But the harvest doesn't come tothe fastest, it comes to the
faithful.
So God isn't slow, he's verythorough.
So, even when it's hard, keepdoing the hard work.
So keep showing up in the word, keep praying when it feels dry,
keep choosing forgiveness.
(06:41):
Even when it costs, keeptending to your soil.
Again, I'll just refer back toour time.
You know, during those twoyears between the move, and
really honestly, you know, whenI started my my with my current
employer, it was like being inthe desert and I did feel like
God had forgotten us.
(07:01):
But we just had to remainfaithful, we had to stay
steadfast.
And can I say too, I thinkthere were times where my faith
walk did get impacted because Iwas filled with so much doubt I
was, you know, I wouldn't say Iwas walking away from the Lord,
(07:25):
because I that's definitely notwhat was happening, but it was
just a disconnect because I feltlike we had done something
wrong in our move and so I feltlike God was being silent
because we had done somethingwrong and that wasn't it at all.
So anyway.
(07:46):
So I just want to encourage youto not quit before the fruit is
produced.
Psalms 126.5 says this thosewho sow in tears will reap with
songs of joy.
And you know, I can think back, like I was saying, to that time
, and there were a lot of tears,a lot of tears, and you know,
(08:10):
god has gone before us and hasblessed us, not just spiritually
and emotionally, but there wasa lot of growth that happened in
all of that, and I would alsosay we've been very blessed
financially, and so God is using, was using all of that time to
prepare us for where we are now.
(08:30):
So I want you to set a dailyfaith appointment, so pick a
10-minute window each day toshow up, no matter how you feel,
I want you to pray, read yourBible and worship and do
something that reminds your soulI'm not quitting, don't be a
quitter.
Okay, it's easy to quit.
(08:52):
It is hard to show up, it ishard to keep going, it is hard
to be faithful, but God rewardsus when we show up.
So don't quit.
And then I want you to getready for the fruit.
Don't just wait for the harvest, prepare for it.
So you know what are you askingGod for healing of your mind,
(09:15):
restoration of your family, boldness in your calling,
clarity in your calling, youknow, freedom from forgiveness
and bitterness.
And faith says I believe it'scoming, but preparation says I'm
ready for it.
Faith isn't passive, it'spreparation.
(09:35):
So start cleaning the clutter, making the space stepping
forward like it's already on theway, and this isn't, like you
know.
Name it and claim it gospel.
That's not what we're saying.
It's just we're saying, or I'msaying just prepare for it, get
ready for it, believe that it'scoming, believe that God is
working through you and he'sgoing to deliver you.
(09:56):
Because when you make a mindshift of relying on God and
believing that it's going tohappen in your healing, I do
believe that's helpful versus Ican never change, I can never do
this, I can never do that.
Because when it's again, it'seasy to never do the thing, it's
(10:16):
hard to do the thing.
And so this week I want you toclean out an area of your life,
just one.
Just pick one area of your lifeto make room for what you've
been praying for.
So it could be a toxic habit, you know, whether you're using
alcohol or drugs, whatever.
(10:37):
It might be a relationshipboundary.
Maybe you are talking tosomeone every day that's very
negative and brings you down.
Or maybe you are a hoarder Iguess is what I would call it
Someone who just hoards stuff,to hoard stuff, to feel like
it's a control thing, I guess.
(10:58):
So maybe you need to say I'mmaking room for what's coming
and prepare for it.
I am definitely one of thosepeople that I love to declutter.
It makes me feel better to getrid of stuff, and obviously you
don't get rid of things that youneed.
But if there's excess, why dowe have it?
(11:20):
Why do we keep it?
I do like to have order.
I'm not always as perfect if youwill that I want to be in that
but I think it's important tomake sure that you're always
cleaning out whether, again,physically, mentally,
emotionally, make room forwhat's coming and then you've
(11:41):
planted in pain, you've pulledthe weeds, you've dug deep,
you've waited in faith and nowyou don't give, give up, because
this might be the very momentwhere your obedience collides
with God's perfect timing.
Philippians 1.6 says this hewho began a work, good work in
you, will carry on to completion.
You know your healing has roots, your growth has fruit and your
(12:04):
harvest is coming.
This is so very important tonot give up.
I know so many people that havegiven up because it was hard
and there's no pride or rewardin giving up.
What?
What is giving up do for you?
Like, literally, what does itdo for you If you give up?
(12:26):
What does that do for you?
You, if you give up, what doesthat do for you?
Like I get if God closes thedoor, but if you give up because
it's hard, what?
Just tell me right now, whatdoes that show to anybody?
So I've recently watched themovie Secretariat and you guys
know how I love a good sportsmovie, a good movie.
(12:50):
The thing about Penry Chenery, penry Tweedy, however you want
to call her.
She never, ever, ever gave up.
She believed in what she wasdoing and she didn't give up.
And as a result of that, lookat what happened.
If you might have heard, everysingle horse that ran the
(13:11):
Kentucky Derby this year camefrom Secretariat Roots.
Every single one of them, 19 ofthose horses came from that.
All because she didn't quit, she didn't give up and she
believed in it.
And so I just want to encourageyou to believe in whatever
calling God's put on your heart.
(13:31):
I want you to believe ingetting healing for yourself.
I want you to believe in beingable to get rid of the addiction
.
I want you to believe that Godhas something so much greater
for you, so much better thanwhat you have right now.
And you might be in that seasonof waiting, like I was for years
(13:52):
, for two years exactly and, andand I can't sit here and tell
you that it's easy.
But just like in any type ofharvesting, that happens.
You have to plant, first, youhave to prepare the soil, and
then you have to make sure thetiming is right, which is as I
had said.
You know why we wait till afterMother's Day.
(14:15):
Then you have to, you know, make sure that your plant begins
to grow roots, and then youhave to weed, and then you have
to water, and you have to do allof these things, pr prune
everything, and then, when thetime comes usually sometime late
in July for us SouthCarolinians, we begin to get
(14:36):
some of these vegetables, thetomatoes, the jalapenos,
whatever it is that you'regrowing, and that's the harvest,
and life is very much like thatit is.
You know you have to preparethe soil.
That's preparing your heart.
I gave you an activity to doyour bloom board.
I gave you an activity for that, and then you've got to develop
(14:59):
the roots.
I gave you that there was ahealing, the five-day healing
challenge that I gave you All ofthese things to lead up to
where the harvest will happenfor you.
And so I just want to encourageyou this week, if you haven't
already, go to our website attanyashalnutcom and put in your
(15:20):
email address and we will sendyou the five day healing
challenge workbook.
It's free, there's no cost toyou.
That will begin to help you asyou prepare the soil and begin
to let God do the harvesting andthe gardening in your soul and
go ahead and get that sent in,and if you have someone that you
(15:43):
know that might be interestedin it or could benefit from it,
feel free to share it with them.
I always want to encourage ourlisteners to like and share and
give us a five star review.
We only have like 22 reviewsand we can't get hope out faster
if nobody goes and reviews it.
And in the meantime, I justwant to thank all of the
listeners.
We're more than halfway through.
(16:04):
We've completed almost 30episodes.
God has been so faithful, y'allhave been so faithful, and I
just want to thank you for that, because we couldn't do this
work.
I get stories every week.
You know those tough weeks whenI want to quit, when I want to
just be like Lord.
Nobody's listening to these,Nobody cares what I have to say.
(16:25):
Why are you wanting me to dothis?
Why am I sharing with the worldall these vulnerabilities?
Why are you wanting me to dothis?
Why am I sharing with the worldall these vulnerabilities?
And then I get these, you know, texts or emails that encourage
me because something I said inthe podcast or something
happened, and so I keep going.
So I just want to thank you allfor that.
You're such a blessing to meand stay tuned and we will see
(16:46):
