Clare Waite Brown and Sam Sethi kick off their brand-new podcast "Creators" with a deep dive into the evolving landscape of creator monetization. The groundbreaking news? TrueFans has just launched a much-requested feature allowing creators to withdraw micropayments directly to their bank accounts through Stripe integration. Gone are the days when fan appreciation was merely symbolic – now creators can convert those tiny payments into real, spendable currency.

The hosts explore the fascinating mechanics behind Creator Wallets, revealing multiple withdrawal options including transfers to other Lightning wallets (like Fountain or Podverse) or direct conversion to traditional currencies. Perhaps most intriguing is the strategic option to recirculate these funds as marketing investments, enabling podcasters to incentivize listeners to engage with specific content. This creates a virtuous cycle where value flows continuously between creators and audiences.

Meanwhile, the wider digital economy appears to be catching up, with X (formerly Twitter) announcing its own micropayment partnership with Visa. Sam highlights how this mainstream adoption could educate hundreds of millions of users about digital microtransactions, potentially transforming how we think about rewarding creators across platforms.

The episode also spotlights independent creators, featuring UK indie rock band Two Weeks in Nashville, and extends an invitation to independent podcasters seeking greater visibility to submit their shows for potential featuring in the future.

Ready to join the creator economy revolution? Support this show with micropayments directly from your TrueFans wallet, leave feedback through SuperComments, or connect with the hosts on social media. The future of creator monetization is here – and it's powered by passionate fans making tiny payments that add up to sustainable creative careers.

Claire Waite Brown (00:01):
Well, hello.
It's Monday, 28th of April 2025, and this is your inaugural
episode of Creators.
I'm Clare Wade-Brown,independent podcaster.

Sam Sethi (00:12):
And I'm Sam Sethi, the CEO of True Fans, on this
week's show.
Clare, we're going to talkabout something called Creators
Wallets.
That's our feature of the week.
We're going to reveal how youcan feature your podcast on this
very show, and also, clare andI are going to choose our music
of the week.
We're going to reveal how youcan feature your podcast on this
very show, and also, claire andI are going to choose our music
of the week.
And finally, we're going totalk a little bit of news from
the podosphere what is going onin the big old, wide world.

(00:35):
And finally, claire and I aregoing to be at the London
Podcast Show, so we're going totalk a little bit about that as
well.

Claire Waite Brown (00:40):
Right, Shall we get started then, Sam?
What has happened this week inTrue Fans?

Sam Sethi (00:46):
So, as you know, claire, we build very fast here
on True Fans, and one of thebiggest requests has been for
creators to be able to accruemoney from their fans using
micropayments from the walletsthat we created.
But they've started to get themoney in, but they haven't been
able to withdraw it out.
So the good news is we nowallow creators on TrueFans to

(01:06):
withdraw the money to theirStripe account.

Claire Waite Brown (01:09):
Brilliant.
So what you're telling me nowis that creators can actually,
once supporters start supportingthem with micropayments, they
can then turn that money intoreal money that they can take to
a shop.

Sam Sethi (01:22):
Yes, absolutely, and people will be going.
When will that happen?
So the good news that'shappened.
So the way it works is when youjoin True Fans, you get given a
True Fans wallet.
We put some money in it, as youknow, for completing certain
onboarding tasks, and you canthen start to either top up your
wallet from Stripe or get paidby your fans who support your

(01:43):
show.
Now that money is now in awallet that you own and it's
starting to accumulate.
Well, we've now made thatwallet appear in your creator's
dashboard.
So after you claim your podcaston TrueFans, you'll get access
to creatorstruefansfm and you'llsee that in your wallet there

(02:03):
is amount of sats.
So now there's a big bluebutton that says withdrawal.
What do you think happens next?
we get some money yes, we'veactually got two options,
possibly three.
Why would I ever give you oneclaire?
So the first option is you canwithdraw the money to another
micro payment wallet.
So if you happen to have aFountain or Podverse or a

(02:26):
Podcast Guru account, which areother 2.0 apps, you can type in
the Lightning address the walletaddress.
So mine would maybe be sam atfountainfm, yours might be
claire at podversefm, forexample.
You just type that address in,tell it how much you want to
take out of your TrueFans walletand that will appear in your

(02:46):
other Lightning wallet.
So that's one option.
But, more importantly, peoplehave wanted to take their money
back out into what we call afiat currency dollars, pounds,
euros.
So now you choose the fiatoption and you choose the amount
you want to withdraw from yourTrueFans wallet and, having set
up your Stripe account, hopefully when you onboarded

(03:10):
it'll just be one click straightinto your wallet or your credit
card or your bank account inthe currency that you've chosen,
and that's as simple as we canmake it.

Claire Waite Brown (03:14):
What I like about it is that if you're doing
this for the first time as alistener and or creator, when
you actually sign up withTrueFans's true fans, that give
you the wallet and then any satsyou've got in there you can
give to other creators and then,as you say, if supporters are
giving you that, it's that samewallet that you can then go to

(03:34):
and turn that support intoactual money.
As you said, that can go backto your stripe account.
It's also very easy to use yourstripe account to put some
money in so you can help otherpodcasts and, as you said, to
take it out again Super.

Sam Sethi (03:48):
Of course, the third option that we haven't talked
about is you don't take themoney out at all, but you use it
as part of your marketing.
So in your podcast you can puta marketing budget and, like we
do with Fan Zone Claire, we paypeople to listen to that podcast
.
You can use money in your TrueFans wallet to pay your fans,
maybe, to listen to that podcast.
You can use money in your TrueFans wallet to pay your fans,
maybe, to listen to a trailer.

Claire Waite Brown (04:09):
Brilliant.
It's time for the podosphere.
What is the podosphere?
Sam?

Sam Sethi (04:14):
Yes, it's the collective term for the podcast
ecosystem, and I thought eachweek, claire, we could talk
about one news story that mightrelate to True Fans and why I
think it's important.
So this week, the story is thatX or Twitter as most people
still know it as have announcedthat they are going to be

(04:35):
bringing out micropayments andwallets in partnership with Visa
, which I thought was veryexciting because it means that a
mainstream social mediaplatform with roughly 200
million users are going to giveevery user a wallet and they're
going to educate people on howto use micropayments.

(04:58):
So, from a wider standpoint, then you think this is going to
help people to understand how todo this for their podcasts that
they like well, I think ifpeople get to understand what a
wallet is and what micropaymentsare and then using visa in the
case of x, to transfer fiatmoney into micropayments, that's

(05:19):
a great learning curve.
Step one and then, I think, step two, when you put a tweet
out, or if that's still called atweet, and you've got a heart
and now you say I want to giveyou 10 sats with that heart.
Again, it's educating a wideraudience that you can pay
creators micro payments forsentiment that you want to give

(05:40):
them.
There's no play sentiment likewe do with a podcast, but maybe
with a comment in X you canleave a comment with a payment,
like we have super comments.
So I think it's one way that wecan see more people in the
mainstream the mass market, aswe often call it getting an
education on what wallets are, what micropayments are and how

(06:03):
they can reward, as a fan, theirfavourite creators.

Claire Waite Brown (06:07):
Okay, so you've hit the nail on the head
there in one point by sayingwhat micropayments are.
Presumably, micropayments arevery small amounts of money,
whether it's SATs or fiat.
So your micropayments, whatyou're talking about there, is
the ability to make very smallpayments and the idea being that
lots of little payments buildup.

Sam Sethi (06:28):
And didn't we do a fan zone show about wallets and
micropayments?
Do you remember what episodethat was?

Claire Waite Brown (06:34):
Yeah, we did .
We've done an episode calledwhy a Wallet, so that explains a
bit more about what we've beentalking about in both sections
of the show so far.
We've also done an episodecalled the Heart Icon, which is
similar to what you've justexplained, and that's kind of
how you've come up with theseideas as well.
They're quite social media instyle, because that's what

(06:56):
people know, and you within TrueFans have given people the
ability to add a little bit ofpayment to that if they want to.
So, yeah, there's a few of theearly Fan Zone episodes.
There's the comments iconepisode, which will explain all
about that.

Sam Sethi (07:10):
And again, remember, if you listen to those episodes,
you get paid by true fans tolisten to them as a way of
saying thank you for your timeand attention.
Now, Claire, let's move on.
This is going to be where wefeature independent podcast
creators and independent musicartists.
How's it going to work?

Claire Waite Brown (07:29):
Well, from the podcast point of view, I am
beaming because, as anindependent podcaster myself and
with very, very many indiepodcast friends, I know how
difficult it can be.
I know the challenges withdiscovery and I know that there
are so many good shows out therethat are maybe not noticed

(07:51):
because possibly they're notfronted by celebrities or they
don't have some kind of backing.
So, true, fans is all aboutmonetizing fandom.
So this is where theindependent creators come in,
and this show is called Creators, so we want to showcase those
creators and how they could bemonetized by their fans.
So what I thought we could dowas well, a couple of things.

(08:15):
Actually, there's a number ofshows that I can recommend that
I've listened to myself, that Iknow are top quality.
So I'm very happy to do that inthe future, and I'm sure you
have some shows like that aswell that you can recommend, sam
.
I think another lovely optionwould be for creators to pitch
themselves to us.
That sounds a bit serious andcorporate, but to introduce

(08:36):
themselves to us.
That's what we'd love to do.
So if you have a show and youthink more people would love to
hear this show, what I wouldlove for you to do is, in true
fans, to leave a comment on thisepisode, any of the episodes in
the future.
You can add some money to thatas a super comment, but you do
not have to Just remember.
It is just a comment telling usa bit about your show, and then

(08:58):
Sam and I will have a listenand we'll decide, maybe, whether
it's a good fit, maybe whetherit's a good fit in the future
when we're talking about aparticular subject and I'm going
to ask Sam if we can also addyour show to our pod role, which
in True Fans is calledRecommendations, maybe even in

(09:19):
the homepage carousel.
I don't know if he'll let us dothat, but these are all good
things for Discovery, sam.
What do you reckon?

Sam Sethi (09:24):
The answer is always clear is I have to say yes to
you.
You know that I can't never sayno, so there you go.
And then the other thing Ithink is we want it not just to
be UK.
So what's nice about it is inshows we love, in the carousel
on the homepage we have multiplecountries.
So if you're in another countryFrance, germany, brazil, mexico
, australia don't worry, pleasedo send in and we can also

(09:47):
feature you in your country aswell.

Claire Waite Brown (09:49):
That sounds brilliant.
So tell me, Sam, about the songaspect of this section of this
show.

Sam Sethi (09:56):
Now, one of the things we also want to highlight
is independent music artists.
Yes, you know, spotify hasthousands of big artists, but
they all tend to be the sameglobally your Ed Sheeran or your
Dua Lipa or your Bruno Mars.
But there are brilliant, brilliant artists that are
trying to get discovered.
They are struggling to getairtime and we wanted to feature

(10:17):
those as well.
So we are going to take a songof the week, and this week it's
Two Weeks in Nashville.
It's a three-piece UK indierock band twin.
I like the name.
Two Weeks in Nashvilleconceived their name as a
tribute to the musical capitalof the world, and so here we go.
This is a song from theirlatest album.
It's called Get Away.

TWIN (10:38):
I'm gonna get away, far from everything.
Please don't ask me why.
I just need some time.
I'm going now for a whileThings to get off my mind.

(10:58):
Don't call me, don't follow me,don't ask me why.
Don't hate me, I'm not theenemy, just gotta get things off
my mind, not my brain.
I gotta get away.

(11:20):
I need a holiday because I'mnot okay.
I'm going out for a while Gotstuff to get off my mind.
Don't call me, don't follow me,don't ask me why.

(11:41):
Don't hate me, I'm not theenemy, just gotta get things off
my mind.
My mind's been stressing me outand I can't decide what's
bringing me down this time.
I'll figure it out just in thespace and time Told you.

(12:06):
I'd go and you should know thatI will return to fix what we
left.
Letting you go is hard at first, but I will return and we can
reset.
So now I'm gonna get away, farfrom everything, no matter why

(12:34):
you say, I just need some space.

Claire Waite Brown (12:39):
Well, that was brilliant, sam.
Thanks for introducing me tothem.
If you want to find music onthe True Fans app on your mobile
, you will go to the avatar orthe little picture of you, and
just a little way down you'vegot search podcasts.
You've got podcasts and thenyou've got music.
Click on there and you can goto music.

(12:59):
You can see what's featured andyou can do some searching.
And while we're at it, sam,I'll just mention that in that
sidebar from the avatar, we'vealso got trailers, and I know
that we can earn money fromlistening to trailers sometimes,
can't we?

Sam Sethi (13:13):
Well, we trailers, and I know that we can earn
money from listening to trailerssometimes, can't we?
Well, we can't you and I, butother people can.
Yes, your band, claire.
You can't just sit therelistening to trailers all day,
but everyone else could if theywanted to.
Yes, yeah, super, thank you nowlet's move on Claire awards and
events.
What we want to do in thissection on this show is
highlight things that are comingup that independent podcast
creators might want to comealong to or they might want to

(13:34):
enter if it's an award.
The London Podcast Show is atthe end of May, May 21st 22nd at
the Business Design Centre inIslington, Will you be there,
claire?

Claire Waite Brown (13:45):
I most certainly will.
Yes, I will be there both days.
I will be there at pubsafterwards.
If anybody wants to invite meto any get togethers, I'm always
up for those.

Sam Sethi (13:57):
Now you went last year.
What was your experience like?

Claire Waite Brown (14:00):
I had a very fabulous time, I have to say.
I went up on the Tuesday nightand I'm doing that again.
I don't live that far fromLondon but I don't have the
energy to go home each night.
So I managed to get myself areasonable hotel in Kings Cross
but I went to the pub where alot of the parties were on the
Tuesday night and that kind ofthing was just so valuable to be

(14:21):
meeting other people who aremaking podcasts.
So that side of things I reallyenjoyed the event itself a
number of good talks.
It's quite heavy going ifyou're doing it for the whole
full days, but that's a lot oflovely networking to be done and
again, there's always eventsgoing on afterwards as well.
So on the Wednesday night, onthe Thursday night, there's lots

(14:42):
of things to be doing.
So, yeah, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sam Sethi (14:45):
Good, I will be there as well for the whole period.
My voice will probably be lostby the end of it.
I do highly recommend, if youare into podcasting, come along
to the show.
It is an amazing gathering of,probably, this year, around
10,000 people.
Claire, that's how big they'regoing to make it this year.

Claire Waite Brown (15:02):
It certainly felt a lot bigger last year
than the year before.

Sam Sethi (15:04):
I will also be there with James Cridland doing a live
Pod News Weekly.
We do one each year and I willalso be presenting the future of
podcasting, a podcasting 3.0presentation and demo.
So there, if you fancy comingalong absolutely.

Claire Waite Brown (15:22):
It's time for the inbox.
How does this work, sam?

Sam Sethi (15:27):
well each week.
Claire what we like users andlisteners of this show to do is
to leave us a super comment.
So find the episode, go to thecomments tab and leave us a
comment, without a payment or asuper comment, if you feel like
giving a little micro paymenttip.
But what we will do is read outthose comments each week on
this show.
So it's a great way to give usfeedback or ask us for features

(15:50):
or other questions that youmight have.
But also we will have if youhappen to have X or you happen
to have Blue Sky, which is a newsocial web platform.
So you can go to attruefanssocial on Blue Sky and
find a post related to this showin that thread and you can
leave a comment there and we canpick it up from there.

(16:11):
Or you can go to X, and it's attruefansfm on X and you can
leave a comment there and we canpick it up from there.
Or you can go tox, and it's attrue fans fm on x and you can
leave us a comment there.
So in both cases, if you don'twant to come into the app and
create an account, you can stillleave us a comment on social
media and again we can pick thatup and each week our goal is to
read back some of thosecomments and, yeah, it's a nice
way to interact with the show.

Claire Waite Brown (16:32):
Yeah, I really look forward to hearing
from people.
That's brilliant.
What about if people want tosupport the show, Sam?
How can they do that?

Sam Sethi (16:40):
Well, that's nice and easy.
So you go to truefansfm slashcreators, which is the URL for
this show.
You'll see a heart in a handicon.
You click on that and you statehow much you would like to pay
this show per month.
So if you want to give us threepounds or three dollars, or if

(17:02):
you want to do that in sats, itcan be three thousand sats.
So it's a nice way for you tobe able to say each month, I'd
like to give you this amount ofmoney.
However, the good news is, if meand you, claire, do not produce
another show, then no moremoney is taken from your wallet.
But if you and I produce a showand you are choosing to support

(17:23):
this show, then we will take amicropayment, which is the
amount of value for this showtimes the time, and we'll take
that from your £3 budget.
Now, once that three poundbudget is used up, don't worry,
we won't be taking any more.
So you can control the amountyou wish to give this show, but
we won't take any more than theamount you choose.
So supporting this show is verysimple you choose the amount

(17:46):
you want and we will then takethat every time we produce a new
episode of Creators.
And yes, thank you very much ifyou are a supporter and of
course we will name check youhere on the show yes, brilliant.

Claire Waite Brown (18:02):
I look forward to reading out some
names.
That hand with the heart symbolis um is one we talk about in a
future episode of fan zone.
One coming up it's known as thefunding tag in 2.0 terms and,
of course, I talk about in afuture episode of Fan Zone.
One coming up it's known as thefunding tag in 2.0 terms and,
of course, I talk about it inPodcasting 2.0 in practice.
But just so, as you know, there's going to be more info on

(18:24):
that going forward.

Sam Sethi (18:26):
So that's pretty much the show, Claire.
I just want to, of course, mention two shows that you
produce Fan Zone and Podcasting2.0.
In Practice, what's thedifference between those two
shows?

Claire Waite Brown (18:37):
Okay.
Well, podcasting 2.0 inPractice is a course and as of
today, it isa complete coursebecause the final episode has
gone out Now.
The difference between Fan Zoneand Podcasting 2.0 in Practice
is that Podcasting 2.0 inPractice talks about a number of
Podcasting 2.0 features.

(18:57):
It talks about why they're good, but it also gives you some
homework on how to use thosefeatures.
So this means I show you whereyou can find them on some of the
2.0 apps.
So of course, I cover TrueFans,I also cover Fountain,
sometimes Pocket Cast, sometimesPodcast Guru.
So that's looking at what the2.0 features are and why they're

(19:21):
good and how easy they are touse, whereas Fan Zone we are
looking very specifically atwhat you can do in True Fans and
I've been learning as I've gonealong.
I thought I knew, but I'velearned even more.
So in each episode again, theyare just bite-sized episodes
we're just going to look at oneicon or one tab or one feature.

(19:44):
You explain to me what it is, Iask you a question if I don't
understand, and then there'schapter art that shows you how
to use the thing as well.
So it's a nice easy way to justpick up on some of the fun
things you can do in TrueFans.

Sam Sethi (19:58):
One of the things that we're going to do with this
show and I'm going to also goback retrospectively with
FanZone is to create a blog postto explain some of the things
we've talked about.
I'll put in the screencast sothat if you want to see exactly
how example example, in thisshow we talked about creator
wallets, there's a screencast inthe episode page for this show

(20:21):
that you can go and read.
And again, I might go back anddo all the fun zone ones that
way, because I think it might bea great way claire to visualize
, if you haven't already got anaccount in true, how that
feature might work.

Claire Waite Brown (20:35):
Ah, I see yes.
Well, good luck with that extrawork you've given yourself.

Sam Sethi (20:41):
And that's it for this week.
Claire, Our audio is recordedand edited using Descript, and
we're hosted by our friends atBuzzsprout.

Claire Waite Brown (20:48):
You can support this show by streaming
sats from your True Fans walletor, better still, become a
monthly supporter of this show.
You can give us feedback usingsuper comments in this episode.

Sam Sethi (21:01):
And, equally, if you'd like to report a bug
you've found in True Fans orsuggest a new feature again, you
can go into True Fans and youcan find that in the sidebar at
the bottom of the menu.
And the good news, claire, isyou own sats when you report a
bug or suggest a new featureFantastic.
Finally, of course, if you want, you can just email support at

(21:23):
truefansfm if there's anythingelse you need to talk to us
about.

Claire Waite Brown (21:26):
And if you would like to advertise on or
sponsor this show, please emailsam at truefansfm for further
details.
