On July 2, 2025, the city of Coppell, Texas, fell victim to a ransomware attack orchestrated by the RansomHub gang, compromising the personal data of approximately 17,000 residents. The attack targeted the city’s IT systems, exposing sensitive information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license details. The breach, discovered after unauthorized access to municipal servers, underscores the growing threat of ransomware targeting local governments, which often lack the robust cybersecurity defenses of larger organizations.
