SPEAKER_00 (00:01):
Welcome to Dad's
Lads and Screenplays.
I'm your host Andy.
Pod title Travelling Light andthe core thought essentials for
the journey bread and a blade.
This thought is taken from 1Samuel 21 and we're looking at
another chapter in the life ofthe hero protagonist David.
(00:23):
Many years ago A father with histhree children entered a railway
carriage and he sat down andslumped and put his head to the
ground.
The kids just used all theenergy they got and they were
running up and down, jumping onseats, dancing on the poles and
generally just being a bit of anuisance.
(00:45):
Eventually someone said whatprobably most people were
thinking, Sir, would you gethold of your kids and control
them because they're disruptingeveryone.
and everything.
He looked up and he said, Iguess they're struggling like I
am, having left their mother andmy wife in the mortuary.
(01:06):
That revelation changed the moodof the carriage and the attitude
of all the people in it.
People began to get up, getdrinks and food for the kids and
began to comfort the kids andcomfort the man as best they
could.
Last time in our podcast, weredefined this old adage, no
pain, no gain.
(01:27):
It's simply not true.
Just being in pressure does notgive us muscle, literal or
figurative muscle.
But we looked last time, pleasego back and have a listen, to
the two pressures that God usesfound in the Word of God.
Romans 5, the first threeverses, the pressure he uses to
grow our character, our innerworld of our heart.
(01:49):
And the second verse, pressurehe uses is to develop that which
can change context and factsthat's faith James chapter 1 and
the first three verses so we'repicking up our story the hero
protagonist is David it's 1Samuel 21 three words that
describe our hero he's afugitive he's on the run he's
(02:14):
famished he's looking for foodand he's fearful why is he
fearful?
David has just met up in theprevious chapter with Jonathan.
He is the son of Saul, who isthe king.
Jonathan tells David, my dad'sliterally just tried to kill me
with a spear.
My dad's lost the plot.
This news strikes fear andbrings pressure to the heart and
(02:39):
the mind of David.
Where should he go?
Who can I trust?
Where do you go when yourcontext is as hot as a cauldron?
Because this is what it was likefor David.
Surprisingly, David goes to thehouse of God, the temple, as we
would call it, the church, andto see the priest.
(03:03):
Let me paint a picture of David.
He's panting and he'spressurized.
He has two thoughts as he entersthe sanctuary.
I need these essential thingsfor the next part of my journey
story.
And he read.
I need a blade.
In his desperation, Davidforgets the essential for every
part of our journey, revelation.
(03:25):
Hearing from the fatherscreenwriter for ourselves, and
that's the core goal of thispodcast, is to help men to hear
the voice of our fatherscreenwriter for ourselves so we
can edit our story and thereinbring great energy and purpose
and passion to our destiny.
(03:47):
David asks the priest for breadand a blade.
David here is literally flyingby the seat of his pants.
He's living by his wits.
He's suspended temporarily.
Wisdom.
He lies like a dog to thepriest's face.
The priest asks him, what areyou doing here on your own?
David says this, I'm on a topsecret mission from Saul the
(04:10):
king.
Uh-uh, that's a lie.
No one knows or can know aboutthis visit.
David then pushes the agenda, give me five loaves for me and
my men.
Well, the priest says, the onlybread I've got is the show
bread.
It's a special bread that's putbefore the presence of God in
the temple back then.
And there was 12 portions of itrepresenting every tribe, every
(04:34):
Jewish tribe and every Jewishman in the nation.
So the priest asked David aquestion, have your men kept
themselves from women?
Lie number two.
David, who's desperate, says, ofcourse, they always do on a
normal mission.
But I've told you, this one's aspecial one on behalf of the
king.
So even more so.
That's a bare-faced lie, David.
(04:57):
Well, David gets his bread.
It's the bread, the bread in thepresence of God.
It's the show bread, to use theofficial title for it.
But here's the fact.
David is so emotional, he failsto see its symbolism.
all grasp it's significant it'sdesperate it's pressurized i
would put him at this levelliquid emotion he suspended the
(05:20):
wisdom we knew the all oralhistory that had been brought up
with man does not live by breadalone but by every word that
proceeds out of the mouth of thefather deuteronomy 8 verse 3
this is the show bread thisbread's been in the presence of
the father it's a portion forevery tribe Wherever you are,
(05:41):
however it is, can I encourageyou to stop and hear the voice
of the Father today?
Even in your desperate days, Iam with you.
I am speaking above the whitenoise of the context that you're
in.
My heart is pounding just likeyours, but not with fear, but
(06:07):
with love and faith.
Stop and listen for me andlisten to me.
Only I can see what could be.
I am with you, always.
I'll never leave you.
But hear this, I am always aheadof you.
(06:29):
So stop, look, listen.
Desperate Dave continues withhis felt needs.
He asks, The priest anotherquestion, do you have a spear or
a sword?
Well, here comes lie numberthree.
The priest asked Dave, why don'tyou have a sword?
You're the greatest warrior inthe nation.
(06:49):
David lies again.
I don't have a sword because Itold you it was a top secret
mission and very urgent, so Ileft without a blade.
So listen to this, 1 Samuel 21verse 9.
the priest said well there's asword of goliath he's the
philistine whom you killed inthe valley of elah there it is
(07:10):
and he points to it wrapped in acloth behind the ephod and the
priest says if you will takethat then take it for there is
no other sword here but that onedavid says there's none like it
give it to me desperate dave astwo things he believes are
essential for the journey andthe next part of the story.
(07:33):
I need bread and a blade.
I need sustenance to sustain meand a sword to protect me.
These are essential for thejourney of every era the
Father's chosen.
And every house of God and everyleader of that house should
supply every son on theirjourney each time they meet with
(07:54):
bread and a blade.
However, In his desperation,David missed the vital supply he
needed throughout every page ofthe story that he had to hear
from the father screenwriter forhimself, especially when the
pressure was this hot.
(08:15):
Let me take a portion of theverse we just read, and this is
what it says.
Priest is speaking to David.
There it is, the sword ofGoliath, wrapped in a cloth
behind the ephod.
So desperate, so emotional wasDavid, he didn't see the
obvious.
He missed the special bread, andnow he picks up Goliath's sword,
(08:37):
which is wrapped behind theephod.
He's so emotional, completelyirrational.
He's reacting, not responding.
The symbol of his greatestvictory to date, the sword of
Goliath, was wrapped behind theephod.
What's that important, Andy?
Well, let me tell you this.
He missed the opportunity to usethe ephod.
(09:00):
The ephod is what they use tohear from the father
screenwriter back them forthemselves.
If it had used the ephod in thispressurized moment, he would
have got the greatestperspective, the father's, and a
clear directive from the onewho's already ahead on the next
page.
And he wants you to get to thatpage.
David could have used the ephodto inquire of the one who had
(09:23):
led him to defeat his greatestenemy to date, his own in the
sword of Goliath.
Yes.
We need bread.
You need bread, David.
I need bread every day.
Yes, we need a sword.
We need to be ready to defendourselves.
But listen carefully, listener.
Bread alone is not sufficient.
(09:45):
We need to have every wordthat's proceeding out of the
mouth of the Father, especiallywhen it's pressurized.
Many years later...
paul a jewish man who had loadsand loads of pressure would
write that the armory of godincluded the sword of the spirit
which is the word of god andthat word for word is ramah in
(10:06):
other words we need to hear thesinging word the freshly baked
word of bread that's coming outof the father's mouth especially
especially when it's reallypressurized wherever you are
however it is hear the voice ofthe father today The bombardment
(10:27):
on your thoughts and emotions isnot me.
It's the father of lies.
Step back, stop, and listen formy still and peaceful voice.
It's still because I know thescript.
It's peaceful because I know thedesired outcome and how to get
(10:50):
you there.
I do know the plans I have foryou, and they're good plans.
And nothing or no one canseparate you from my love.
You have my promise.
All things, yes, including thiscauldron-hot, pressurized
moment, I will use for good.
(11:11):
So stop, look, listen.
David, the hero-prodaconist, hasjust missed the opportunity of
his timeline to hear.
from the father screenwriter forhimself, David would have many
more opportunities to acquirethis essential keystone habit,
(11:33):
hearing the father for himself.
And eventually, at a placecalled Gilgal, he would get it.
So let's join David ninechapters later and to see if
he's learnt the habit yet.
1 Samuel 30, verse 6.
Moreover, David was greatlydistressed, things aren't
(11:57):
getting better for him, becausethe people spoke of stoning him,
for all the people wereembittered, each one because of
his sons and daughters.
But David strengthened himselfin the Lord his God.
The bread of chapter 1 is gone.
He's still got Goliath's sword, but here, in immense pressure,
(12:18):
David remembers the keystonehabit, the habit that will serve
him very well indeed.
David said to the priest, Bringme the ephod.
Verses 7 and 9, 1 Samuel 30.
David said to Abba for thepriest, Bring me the ephod.
So the priest brought the ephodto David.
(12:39):
David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue this
band?
Shall I overtake him?
And the father screenwriter saidto him, Pursue, David.
You will surely overtake them, and you will surely rescue all.
He's encircled, is David, by hishardest, strongest men, his
greatest warriors.
(12:59):
They're gripped by the strongestof emotions, grief.
They've got rocks in theirhands.
Their minds and their emotionsare bombarded by the thoughts of
what's happened or happening totheir daughters and their sons.
David comes to his senses inthis pressurised moment.
Bring me the ephod.
(13:19):
He asks two questions.
Shall I go?
Will I be successful?
And his father's screenwritersays, yes to both days.
Welcome back.
Wherever you are, however it is,hear the voice of the father
today.
Hear my heart.
(13:40):
Many are the thoughts of yourheart today.
I give you permission to havemany thoughts and numerous
questions.
I also give you this promise.
I will answer you.
I will reply to you.
Ask me to help you ask the rightquestions because I deeply want
(14:04):
and deeply desire to give you myperspective and my directive.
So stop, look, listen.
Some closing thoughts.
Revelation and speculation rhymefor a reason.
The father screenwriter desireswe live and regulate our lives
(14:26):
by revelation, not speculation.
Revelation flows to and flowsfrom our spirit.
Speculation flows from and toour emotions, in our soul, mind,
will and emotions.
Satan, the father of lies, lovesspeculation and he hates
(14:46):
revelation.
Revelation simply means touncover what's already there.
The next page is written.
The next chapter is alreadyheaded.
Speculation pushes thesequestions.
The what and the why.
What's going on?
Why is it going on?
What's coming next?
(15:07):
Nothing, I'm learning, becomesdynamic until it is specific.
David eventually learns thekeystone habit and so am I.
hearing every day the voice ofthe Father's screenwriter.
So too, listener, must you.
To paraphrase that great prayerthat Jesus taught his disciples
(15:31):
to pray, simply put, give me thebread I need today.
That freshly baked kind thatcomes out of your presence,
Papa.
Speculation may be flooding youwith many questions and painting
many scenarios.
Questions always come in thepressure.
It's inevitable.
(15:51):
However, marvellous Holy Spiritwill help us to ask the right
question of the right person, our Papa, so we can get the
right perspective and a cleardirective.
Father Screenwriter is with youand is for you, but he's also in
front of you and in front of me.
