Speaker 1 (00:00):
H The Magic Detective, starring the world's greatest living magician, Blackstone.

(00:20):
He tells you the inside story of the message from Nowhere,
and right after the story, Blackstone will explain tricks that
you yourself can perform, reveal the guarded secrets of the
world's greatest living magician. And now stand by for Blackstone.

(00:56):
The Magic Detective. Tell me, rolled up, what's that kid's
slate doing among all blackstones magic equipment looks sort of
out of place somehow.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
That's not just a kid's slate, Don, It has great
powers through its Spirits from the outer darkness can converse
to us, mere mortals.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
What are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Words from the other worlds come to us by that slate,
Don Hancock, and put it on that easel over there, and.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
I'll show you say, hadn't we better wait for Blackstone
before we do the trick?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
This isn't a trick, Don, This is the voice of
the spirits.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
All right, here's the slate on the easel. I bet
this flops.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
Lumbo jumbo abricodabro right right, oh ye, spirits, Now I'm
kind of slate over Why it.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Says happy birthday to Don?

Speaker 6 (01:50):
Is it your birthday. Don Yes, Blackstone, that's the funny
part about it. Well, I see Road has been communing
with the spirits.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Well, how on earth would the spirits know that it's
my birthday?

Speaker 7 (02:00):
The spirits know everything?

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Ay, I remember now, Rhoda, I told you that today
was my birthday, and somehow you wrote it on the slave.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Why damn Hancock, you heard me calling to the spirit
with your own ears.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Well, it's all right, Rhoda.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
It's a swell treck and I would have been completely baffled.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
I remember telling you about my birthday.

Speaker 6 (02:18):
You remember the last time you did some special writing
on the slave Roder.

Speaker 7 (02:22):
I'll never forget it.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Me thinks there's a story in this, methanks.

Speaker 7 (02:26):
You thinks right, and quite a story.

Speaker 6 (02:28):
I was out in Hollywood making a picture when it
all started, Rhoda and I arrived one morning to find everyone.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
On the set disper nobody's doing anything, Blackstone. Look at
all those people huddled together over there talking.

Speaker 7 (02:42):
We're supposed to start rehearsing in a few minutes, and
nobody's working at all.

Speaker 6 (02:46):
Yes, I wonder what's the matter, Blackstone. Oh, I'm so
glad to see Alicia Wingate movie star well, well, it's
been a long time since you worked with me, Alicia.

Speaker 8 (02:57):
Oh, don't tell anyone how long Blackstone. I'm supposed to
be just twenty three?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Uh uh.

Speaker 6 (03:03):
This is Rhoda of Brand, Alicia. She's taking your place
in the act.

Speaker 7 (03:06):
How do you do?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Hello? When I see your pictures, I just can't imagine
that you were the girl the Blackstone cut in half.

Speaker 8 (03:12):
Sometimes I find it sort of hard to remember.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Myself, Alicia.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
What's the matter this morning? No one seems to be
doing any work. The set isn't ready for the act.

Speaker 7 (03:20):
Haven't you heard heard?

Speaker 6 (03:22):
What about Baby Lou the child star?

Speaker 8 (03:24):
Yes, Stephen Phillips, the producer, got another of those dreadful
letters this morning.

Speaker 7 (03:30):
What dreadful letters?

Speaker 6 (03:31):
A kidnapped fred Ooh, just some crank probably.

Speaker 8 (03:35):
No, they don't seem to think so. Baby Lou was
sent away last week. Phillips himself sent her to keep
her hidden until they can track this down. Everyone is frantic.
Oh here's Stephen now, Hello, Steve?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Anyone news not.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Since the letter this morning?

Speaker 8 (03:51):
Oh, Steve, it's dreadful that poor baby.

Speaker 9 (03:54):
I know, she's such a sweet child. Everybody outdoors her.

Speaker 8 (03:58):
Steve is the studio going to pay.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Hey, you mean she's been kidnapped already.

Speaker 10 (04:02):
No, but the letter said that if fifty thousand dollars
isn't sent to some address by noon today.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
She would be who the studio is going to do it?

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Aren't they?

Speaker 9 (04:10):
No?

Speaker 10 (04:10):
You see, the higher ups feel that as long as
she hasn't been actually kidnapped, there's no need to pay.

Speaker 7 (04:15):
How dreadful.

Speaker 9 (04:17):
I've argued and pleaded, but they won't listen. I can't
move them.

Speaker 8 (04:20):
But they sent baby low away to keep her safe.

Speaker 10 (04:23):
I did that myself on my own initiative. It's lucky
she was between pictures, or they would have been the
devil to pay.

Speaker 9 (04:30):
I don't know.

Speaker 10 (04:31):
Why, but I feel those letters mean business, So do I,
Steve Well. I've done everything I can. If the kid
were my own, I couldn't be crazier about her. We've
just got a hope, that's all.

Speaker 9 (04:43):
I've got her hidden so no one knows where she is.
That's the best I can do. Well, we better get
to work.

Speaker 10 (04:50):
Hey, Bill, get those lives set you, Joe, got the
camera ready, pleases everybody.

Speaker 8 (04:56):
I wish I could get this thing out of my mind.
I won't be able to act for sour apples. Well,
come on, Blackstone, it's going to be fun having you
saw me in half after all these years.

Speaker 6 (05:09):
Oh uh Rhoda, Yeah, I forgot the magic slate. Would
you mind running out to the dressing room and getting
it for me?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Okay, be back in a minute.

Speaker 10 (05:17):
You take over the rehearsal, will yo. If anything comes up,
you can reach me at home.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Uh. Where on the fasode did the boss leave that slide?
It should be right here there. It is right in
the desk. I'll take it out to Blackstone.

Speaker 9 (05:38):
Hello, lie h, we got us snatch the kid. After all,
the company won't pull me up the door.

Speaker 11 (05:43):
Just on those threatening letters. The kids out of my
place at San Jueaquin. I've told the nurse to bring
her into town on the eleven forty three train. We'll
grap at the station in Los Angeles.

Speaker 9 (05:54):
Who is it?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
I can't seem to recognize the boys.

Speaker 9 (05:57):
Yeah, I'll be there. I doubt the nurse would get
into a strange car.

Speaker 7 (06:02):
Just open the door and see you.

Speaker 11 (06:03):
You'll settle with the nurse when we get to the hideout.

Speaker 9 (06:06):
Don't worry, you won't talk after we get through with it.

Speaker 7 (06:09):
Dolory do you kill the nurse and me too if
you sponsor me.

Speaker 9 (06:12):
Okay, see you at the station.

Speaker 11 (06:14):
Remember, hold on open the door before he gets away.

Speaker 9 (06:22):
Who's there?

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Who's there?

Speaker 9 (06:25):
I'm out from behind that door. And if you won't talk,
I'll fight you.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Sprint Hello.

Speaker 9 (06:34):
What are you doing here?

Speaker 7 (06:36):
Nothing?

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Well, that is Blackstone asked me the equipment for the act.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
I mean I was just.

Speaker 9 (06:41):
Walking by and you overheard that phone conversation me.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Oh no, no, I'm just a little deaf.

Speaker 7 (06:48):
That is very deaf. I mean you mean you heard.

Speaker 10 (06:50):
Every word I said. Come on, I am taking you
with me. I'll get moving.

Speaker 7 (06:54):
You can't do that. Blackstone will expect me to be here.

Speaker 10 (06:57):
And if I don't show, write mister Blackstone a little
note saying you had a headache and went home.

Speaker 9 (07:01):
I will write, I think you will. I will write
the note.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
All right.

Speaker 10 (07:05):
I'll come on back in the Blackstone's dressing room.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
That's it.

Speaker 10 (07:10):
I'll sit down at that desk and write what I
tell you, dear mister Blackstone. I have a bad headache,
so I am going. I am going back to the hotel.
I'll see you tonight, Sincerely, Rhoda.

Speaker 6 (07:25):
That's funny, She seems all right this morning, writ in
mister Blackstone. As soon as I get the sleep, Oh
there comes the boy with it.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Now, thank you, son, and now I'm ready.

Speaker 9 (07:36):
Places everybody right camera action.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
You will now see the spirits writing on the slate.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Will you pick a card?

Speaker 7 (07:50):
I have one.

Speaker 6 (07:51):
Look at it without letting me see it. Now when
I say the word, look at that slate over there
on the easel, the name of the cards, and we'll
be written there. Look at the sleep.

Speaker 7 (08:04):
But there's nothing written here.

Speaker 6 (08:06):
Turn the slate over. What does it say? Does it
give the name of your car?

Speaker 8 (08:12):
No, no it doesn't. The track didn't work, black stuone, huh.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
What's going on there? What's the idea?

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Look?

Speaker 8 (08:20):
The message here says kidnappers Los Angeles station eleven.

Speaker 6 (08:24):
Three, Its road is writing. Quick call the police have
them meet that train. Hurry here they are. There's baby
Lou getting into that car.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Stuff O the.

Speaker 7 (08:44):
Heaven the police are here.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
Is in that car and Steve Phillips.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
They've got them. The baby's safe.

Speaker 7 (08:49):
And so is Rhoda.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
You mean that Stephen Phillips, the producer, was the kidnapper.

Speaker 7 (09:05):
That's right done.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
He cooked up this plan to raise a great deal
of money that he needed badly. He figured that no
one would suspect him.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
And he had the baby all the time. He knew
where she was.

Speaker 6 (09:15):
He never really thought you'd have to actually kidnap her.
He thought the movie company would pay off on the threats.
Rhoda hadn't overheard.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Him, or if you hadn't been a magician, so I
could leave a message for you.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
How did you leave that message, Rhoda?

Speaker 7 (09:27):
I scratched it.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
On the magic plate with a fingernail of my left
hand while I was writing the note to Blackstone with
my right and.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Saw another mystery was solved by magic.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
And now for a trick with some cigarettes done? Uh
do you have those pecks, handy, Rhoda.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Here they are five of them. How many cigarettes do
you want?

Speaker 6 (09:43):
One from each pack? Oh, by the way down, it's
your favorite brand among them.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Oh, yes, there it is.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
Uh seven Stars, what a name for a cigarette? Well, anyway,
we'll use it now. WA's exactly what I do.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
I'm watching?

Speaker 6 (09:58):
Well, I pick up one cigarett it, show it and
drop it in this hat. Okay, that's fair enough, And
then another and another.

Speaker 7 (10:06):
There goes the seven stars.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Just like the rest of them a port and if
well they're all in the hat, is the trickover?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
No, it's just beginning.

Speaker 6 (10:15):
We'll let Rhoda shake the hat to mix the cigarette.
All right, done? If you know your own brand so well,
you ought to be able to reach in the.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Hat and pick it right up.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
You mean without a chance to smoke it, that's.

Speaker 6 (10:27):
Right, by magnetism, nothing more.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
All that's impossible. All the cigarettes were the same size,
none have cork tips, and the roder's shaking them in
the hat.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
That's enough, Rota, just holl the hat high so I
can't see into it. Want me to pick out your
favorite brand?

Speaker 3 (10:42):
Dumb? What would be real magic if you could? What
do you mean?

Speaker 6 (10:45):
Could?

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Look?

Speaker 6 (10:47):
I reached you to the hat and feel your cigarette,
and here it is.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Don't tell me that's a seven stars.

Speaker 6 (10:54):
Well look at the name on it down you'll see
I'm right.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Say it is a Servants.

Speaker 6 (11:00):
Then smoke it after you finished your next announcement.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Ah wait a moment. You don't get all that easy.
How did you happen to pick my brand?

Speaker 2 (11:08):
If you can't guess how done Blackstone will tell you
after you finished the announcement, Our.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Blackstone, what about the cigarette trick, finding the brand, It
was easy.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Look i'll show you.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Oh, here's five press cigarettes for the trick.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
All right.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
I pick up the first cigarette and show it. Then
I drop it into the hat. You notice anything?

Speaker 3 (11:44):
I know?

Speaker 6 (11:45):
But while I was showing the cigarette, I held it
in the center.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yes, I noticed that much.

Speaker 6 (11:49):
And I rolled it back and forth between my thumb
and fingers like this.

Speaker 7 (11:53):
You didn't notice that part, did you? Done?

Speaker 3 (11:56):
No, it's so natural.

Speaker 6 (11:57):
When I came to your brand, done, I pressed hard
when I rolled it. I'll do it slowly like this.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
Say you're practically flattening the middle of that cigarette.

Speaker 7 (12:07):
Not quite done. He's just softening it.

Speaker 6 (12:09):
And that's enough. I handle the rest of them more gently.
Now compare them.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Done.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Why the cigarette you pressed is all spongy in the middle,
and the others are firm tiers are rock almost.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Well, that's the answer.

Speaker 6 (12:20):
Done. When you reach in the head, just find the
one you soften, and it'll be the brand you want.

Speaker 7 (12:26):
And that's how it's done.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
I hope you like that trick, ladies and gentlemen. And
until next time, this is Blackstone saying good magic and goodbye.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
