Speaker 1 (00:10):
The Magic Detective, starring the world's greatest magician, Blackstone. He
tells you the inside story of the Emerald in the Fishbowl,
and right after the story, Blackstone will explain tricks that
you yourself can perform, revealing the guarded secrets of the
world's greatest magician. Now stand by for Blackstone the Magic Detective.

(00:43):
Now too, Blackstone's Magic Studio. It's really a very remarkable place.
Everything is so curious and unusual.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
You include me in that description.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Why, hello, Robert Hell.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
I wouldn't say that you're curious, but you're certainly unusual.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Because of the way I appear from Blackstone's cabinet.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Well that's one reason.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Then that big fish bowl as unusual too, because Blackstone
produces it out of thin air, and every show certainly
as a large one.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
How in the world can he manage that?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Oh, here's Blackstone. Now, maybe he'll take and.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Maybe I won't. No, you'll have to ask the Fishbowl
Drake and figure it out for yourself.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's a bargain, Blackstone, provided you tell us another of
your adventures as a magic.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Detective, and tell it right now, very well. I'll tell
you where the fishbowl came from because that was an
adventure in itself. Did you ever hear of Missus van Layton?
Did I Why?

Speaker 1 (01:33):
She owns the famous van Leyden Emerald, one of the
largest in.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
The world, and she owned this fish bowl too. Only
Missus van Laydon gave me the fishbowl in return for
the famous Emerys You mean you once owned the emerald Blackstone.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
He means he saved it from Missus van Layton and
she gave him the fish bowls a souvenir. I was there,
so I know all about.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
It, and we'd like to hear all about it Blackstone
very well. Well, it began when I was invited to
Missis Sylvester van Layden's Plaicier home on Viscay, Baby Miami.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
With the black Stone. It's such a pleasure to have
you with earth, and thank you. I've been all a
flasure at the black Stone waiting for you to arrive,
and something very unexpected to occurred, something very serious. I
must have your.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Ovits to give it. Missus Bentley.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
It's about the famous Emerald. To know the magnificent chim
that was to give my poor lamented husband.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
I've heard about that celebrated Emeralds has been.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
Made to steer its. Fortunately, my trusted servants frustrated the attemper.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Do you know who've tried to steal one of a
house guests?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
But which we do not know?

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Of course, I could not accuse all of them, nor
I have. I had the opportunity to place the emerald
and take deposit. I was afraid to wear it and
afraid to leave it in my room, I can quite understand.
So I struck upon the most ingenious expedient that I
know will charm you. Come with me to the music.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Why what a huge fish bowl?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
And those good fish are magnificence?

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Isn't the little castle artistic?

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Very Those colored pebbles, uh had quite a sparkle. Why yes,
there are some red and some blue, and uh green
one broader?

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Why yes, I see the green one?

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Are you sure it's only a pebble? Roder?

Speaker 4 (03:18):
I knew you would understand, mister Blackstone. Don't you think
I'm clever?

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Very clever? Missus van Ladon, Why it's the same as
that's right, Roder? Or tell me, missus van Leyden. Was
this all your own plan?

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Well not entirely. I spoke about it to Topton. He's
my butler you'll.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Know you can trust Topton.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Oh absolutely, Why, he is a man who nearly caught
the thie.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
See so you told Topton you were putting the emerald
here in the fishbowl.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Well, you see, I asked where I should put the emerald,
and he said in the fishbowl. When I said that
anyone might see it there, Tapton said, well all the better.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
I see, missus van Leyden. I think you've set a
very very clever turn.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
But how is this a trap?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
It's really simple, Rhoda, if anyone reaches into the fishbowl,
he'll get his hand with proving that he was after
the emeralds, exactly what Tompson said. Now, you said you
uh suspected one of your guests.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yes, his name is Monte Pilroy. He's lost a great
deal of money gambling.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
I understand enough to risk stealing your emerald.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
I am afraid. Yes, I have heard that Monte knows
a great many doubtful people, but I learned it after
I invited him here. Now, if I introduced Jo to my.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
I uh, I think it would be better to introduce
Rhoda to him, and don't tell Marty that she works
with Blackstone. That you s So, your name is Rhoda Brander.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
You may call me Rhoda if you wish.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Mine's Monte anyway, right, I like you.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Oh, quite a compliment episode short and acquaintance.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
I mean that very genuine reason, different from most of
the other guesses.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Oh just how do you mean?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Oh? Most of the us as knobs the money to
waste and time to waste.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Don't you ever waste both, Marty?

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I have in the past. That's why I regret it.
Look at their faces that you see here, hm, gen it'll.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Appeal to you.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
Why, yes, Pomstance, there's a very distinguished looking gandleman talking
to Missus van Laydon.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Now, oh, that's Blackstone, a magician. He's a special guest
to see wing. Oh and I think I know why
you do. Yes, Missus van Layden wants him to protect
her precious emeralds. Somebody tried to steal it.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Why, how terrible?

Speaker 5 (05:29):
In my opinion, it was an inside job. Look over
in that corner, rode it near the fishbowl. Yes, you
see that Depp Dapperman.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
M How who is he?

Speaker 5 (05:37):
The butler? His name is Topton. He's watching that fishbowl.
Do you know why I couldn't guess because Missus van
Laydon put her emerald in it right among the pebbles,
so as to fool people. I saw a do it,
and as Topton know, I think, so I have a
debt to square of that chap.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
What kind of a debt?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
A dampling dead? I lost money playing cards with some
friends of missus van Laydon. Only they weren't what what
what her friends? They were criocket gamblers or learned all
about this place from Topton. That's how they pose as
respectable people.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
You're sure, Topton total?

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Yes? Hell listen Roto. Let's take turns watching that fish bowl.
We'll stroll over in that direction, all.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Right from my side.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
People over here in the corner of the hill. So
it's you you see. I had this Spilett light switch roller.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Here the lights wains.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
I did my best matter to save the emerald.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Did your best to steal it, you mean, and just succeeded. Ah,
but my hands are dry, and he's a wet. That's
because I was grabbing your hand tied handfwth you Let's
see those hands. Yes, Topton's are dry. Monty is a
wet and that cures mesa. I would suggest that you
searched Monty Pratt. You turned your ham on Topton. Why
did you turn off those lights? Turn off the lights?
Why he was to the switch. In fact, Monty couldn't

(06:57):
have turned them off. He was on the other side
of the big bowl. That's right.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
I just turned on the light, so I know.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
But it was the trapper thief and trapper thief you did.
I'm going to search you, top To. I have the
gun now roder, and there's the emerald in Topton's best pocket.
There's the thief, Missus van Liden, your own butler, Topton.

(07:32):
But how could Topton have stolen the emerald if his
hands were dry? He was merely using an old trick
trick to keep his hands.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Dry, that's right. And topped him trapped Marty into grabbing
for him so Marty's hands would get wet.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
It made Marty look so dumb that I knew he
couldn't be the thief.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Well, maybe I'm dumb too, but this dry hand business
has me baffled.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Well, look there on the dressing table. Do you see
that cat poder? You mean this one that says uh
stairruate of zinc. That's the one shake some the powder
on your hand. Alright, there you are. Now I rub
the powder into your hand thoroughly, front and back. Al right,
well that's done.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
What next?

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Dip your hand into that big fish bowl and stead
of water around. Now, bring out your hands and look
at it. Why it's dry. And so we stopped him
hand up in his room, we found a cand of
steer apen. See still dry. Say that's a good trick,

(08:32):
black storm. And here's a little mystery that drivers the
dry hand trick. Uh, we can all do it all
our listeners. Right now, I needed a saucer in the
drinking glass.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Any water in the drinking glass, Well.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
We make it about uh quarter food alright, I'll bring
you And now I must power something else. And nickel.
You always begin these tricks for borrowing a nickel, I know,
But suppose this time we make it a quart? Are you?
And here's a quarter before you're not? And a half dollar?
What do I do next? Oh, there's the saucer. Drop
coin in the saucer. There you go. Now we'll don't

(09:03):
plow the water from that glass into the saucer, all right,
And now well there you are, pick up that quarter
without getting your fingers wet. But you said ride, I said, no,
stereaate of zinc. We won't use any In fact, anybody
can pick up the coin without getting his fingers wet.
You mean anybody that knows the trick. Yes, And since

(09:25):
Rhoda doesn't know it, we'll give her a few moments
to triumph.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
And now black Stone. How about the coin and the saucer.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Well, it's still there. Rhoda hasn't figured it out yet.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
Well, now wait a minute.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
The coin is in the saucer under a half an
inch of water.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
That's right, And you are to pick up the coin
without getting your fingers wet.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Mm. Can I pick up the saucer?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
No, you can't pick up the saucer.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Then I give up, and so do I.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
But see you do a black storm unless it's impossible, No,
it's very possible and very easy.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Just take a little piece of paper and hold it
over the empty glass.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Over the empty glass.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
That's right. Now, strike a match, apply it to the paper.
Now drop the paper right into the empty glass.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
There. That's easy.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Now as soon as the paper is burning, well, pick
up the glass and set it upside down in the
saucer of water. Right, beside the coin.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
All right, there you are.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
Oh you saw what happened, Well, I'll say I did.
Why the glass sucked up all the water from the saucer,
And there's the coin lying high and dry. Pick it
up order without getting your fingers wet. I hope you
all enjoy that trick. And now until next time. This
is Blackstone saying good magic and goodbye. They won us.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Next time when the world's greatest magician Blackstone tells us
the story of the Maharajah's gold and explains more tricks
