Speaker 1 (00:00):
Doc rocks Smith Mountain Lake. We are your feel good station.
It's the Morning Jam with Janet Rose and Mark Lamb.
And of course our whole station is about making people
feel better and helping them emotionally get through their day
because illness is a real thing. Suicide is a very

(00:23):
real problem in this country and in our region. We
have with us this morning, Casey Harrison, who is here
to talk to us about the Out of the Darkness
Walk that we're just four days away from. Good morning, Casey, Hey,
good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Thank you for having me. And yes, I can't believe
we are four days away.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
It's so close right now. If you work with the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention here in the Lynchburg region,
tell us why you became so involved with this.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, absolutely, So I got involved back in twenty eighteen
after being affected by suicide of my own personal life.
So I was in a really bad relationship for about
seven years that was, you know, very tumultuous with a
man that was uffering from mental illness and also an alcoholic,
and he just refused to acknowledge his issues or get help,

(01:22):
and unfortunately he ended up taking his life in twenty seventeen,
and after losing him, it was it's very difficult to
navigate that grief and I didn't know how to ask
for help and felt like I was a burden, So
you know, I didn't and I buried all of my pain,
and about six months after he passed, I actually ended
up making an attempt to take my own life and

(01:44):
I survived. And in that moment, actually, like as soon
as I woke up in the hospital bed, I knew
that I could either let what happened to me break
me or I could let it have me make me
have a greater purpose and use it for reading people
good or to help others. And so that's when I've
reached out to the national website level actually just to

(02:07):
get more involved and find more information for myself, and
was connected with our local chapter here in Lynchburgh and
it was small world. Found out that's our one co chair,
Joe Joan Razine, her husband John was actually a former
co worker of mine. Wow. Yeah, it was really touching
to know that, and we had lunch, and ever since then,

(02:30):
I've just kind of hit the ground running and I
do the social media for Lynchburg and actually expanded that
for the Virginia State Chapter as well. I do social media.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
You know, it's interesting there are more ways for people
to connect than ever before, and yet we have more
mental illness, more people feeling alone and isolated than ever before.
So the work that you all are doing is just
really really important. Now you've this is kind of an
anniversary year for you all.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yes, it is our tenth year of the Out of
the Darkness Walk here in Winsford, and we are very,
very excited just to see the community. Their community just
never disappoints. They come out in numbers, they show their
support and it's just a really touching, beautiful day.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
So tell us exactly where the walk is going to be,
all the details on that and how people can register
for it.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Sure, So the walk is this Saturday. We are at
Peaksview Park in Windsburgh. So we start we open at
nine a m. For registration and check in. So from
nine to ten that's when we do registration. You check in,
we do honor beads, which shows your connection to the cause,
and then we also have t shirts available for those

(03:47):
that reach their fundraising goal, and then you can visit
resource tables. We're going to have several different local community
resource tables there for folks to come and talk to.
And then we also have a memory wall which people
can bring their own pictures or drawings, memorabilia, whatever they
would like. And we have other supplies there for people

(04:08):
to create their little piece of memory to hang up
on our wall. And then we also have paging stations
for Hope Rock. So after all that's fun, the opening
ferremony kicks off attend then we do the wall, come
back closing ceremonies about eleven thirty, and then we wrap
up by news excellent.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Now this isn't the only fundraiser you do throughout the year.
You've got another one coming up a little bit later
on this month, right, Yes, and I.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Am so excited about this. So we kicked off an
initiative actually across the state of Virginia trying to find
tattoo shops that would partner with us for tattoos for Hope.
And so we're the second one in the state and
we're going to be doing ours the weekend of Saturday
October eighteenth and Saturday October nineteenth at Dream Driven Tattoos
on Timberlake Growth.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
So I have a question. I waited until I was
in my forties to get my one and only tattoo,
and my wife is pondering she just wants one as well.
So let's just say we show up. We've got to
probably have a little sketch in hand and an idea
because I know here's I'll just tell you the quick story.

(05:21):
I told a tattoo artist, so you used to go to
my church. I ran into him in the bathroom one
day and I said, this is what I want. He
pulled about two feet of the paper towel thing, laid
it on the wet countertop, took his sharpie out because
all tattoo artists have a sharpie in their back pocket. Yeah,
and he drew exactly what I was saying, and I said, yes,
that's it. So tell us about coming that day. You

(05:45):
have to have something in mind, right or otherwise you
walk away and go, what did I just do?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
You don't? Actually, So here's here's the cool thing. So
what the shop's doing is so we're gonna have three
artists they're tattooing on both days from ten am to
i pm. And they're going to have flash sheets available
for people to choose from. They're going to make some
flash sheet designs that are just representative of mental health
awareness and suicide prevention. You're going to see the butterflies

(06:11):
and semi pool in you know, all feel good. But
in addition, if you do have a custom design in mind,
they will honor that also, So we have both options
very good.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
If people want to find out more about your organization,
what's the best way for them to do that.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
So we have an awesome Facebook group it's Lynchburg VA
Out of the Darkness Walk, and we put a ton
of information in there about all of our fundrainging events,
tabling events the day of the walk, and then you
of course can go to AFSP dot org slash Linchburg
where you can register for the walk for free. It
is one hundred percent free to come out and walk

(06:49):
and join us, and then you can find out a
ton of information on the AFSP website as well as
if you're looking for more information on resources for how
to get involved or any of the training programs that
we actually offer, which is some of what the money
we foundraising the community.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Goes back to awesome.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Cassie Hairston with Lynchburg via Out of the Darkness Walk.
It's going to be this Saturday at Peaksview Park. Thanks
so much for joining us. We appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Thanks so much for having me.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
