Speaker 1 (00:05):
All right, welcome everybody to dog House Sports. God, it
feels good to say that Doghouse Sports on. iHeart Sports
Talk and More. My name is Elvis. That is my
friend of thirty years. Wait, I don't know if he's
my friend. Derek D's former forty nine er in Super
Bowl jamp How are you many it?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
You know, I listen. I consider you a friend. I
just don't know if we are friends' friends definitely? Okay, good, good,
good good. That is Danny, our producer. And I just
want to you know, I want to think. I want
to think. iHeart San Francisco. It's very cool that they
have launched iHeart Sports Talking More, which is a brand
new platform. And if those people that are listening to
(00:45):
this don't know who the dog House was, the Doghouse
was basically the best radio morning show ever. I'll just
say that. And I was the big reason for that. Yeah,
I was the reason for that. No, it was yeah,
of course, well you you were kind of busy playing
football when we first launched. But for those people who
don't know, Derek is a Super Bowl champion with the
(01:07):
San Francisco forty nine ers, and that is how we met.
You met Big Joe at a car dealership, brought you
on the show, and that whole season. If those people remember,
the doghouse was on a station called Hot ninety seven
seven in San Jose. Let's bringing some people back right there.
You came on and at the time I was a
(01:28):
San Diego Charger fan and I was little did I know?
I was talking so much smack, so much smack. And
it turns out that was probably one of the ugliest
Super Bowls that you guys beat the Chargers. Wasn't it
like twenty one to zip within the first eight minutes?
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, the smoke never cleared for you guys.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, it was ugly. And as I recall, I had
to do something stupid like wear a forty nine Ers
jersey and whatever. But it's like, it's okay. But that's
how far Derek and I go back. That was nineteen
ninety five for UH want to thank our sponsors? Smart tab.
Smart tab is a point of sale, a point of
sale for bars, restaurants, nightclubs, gentlemen's clubs. How long has
(02:11):
it been since administrip club? Derek? What time is it? No,
I tell you, let me tell you about smart tab
It is specifically made for high volume bars, restaurants, nightclubs,
gentlemen's clubs. It is the best point of sale to
generate your bar, nightclub more money. Go to smart tab
(02:31):
dot com and book your demo. That easy, all right?
Before we get to some sports, I'm sorry about this,
but I'm a little I'm just done with the Kelsey
brothers and the Watt brothers. They are so overexposed. ESPN
today announced that Jason Kelsey on ESPN is going to
be hosting a nighttime talk show. Please are you kidding me?
(02:52):
He was a great player and you can respond to
this on what a great center he was offensive lineman, Derek.
But is am I wrong? Here? Are they a little overexposed?
Travis and Jason Kelsey?
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Hey, look, they're taking advantage of the opportunities that they get,
and you can't you can't be upset with that, right
because any of us would love to have those opportunities.
So forgetting that opportunity, you got to give it to
him then, and who knows how long it's gonna be
there though, That's that's the question, right.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
I think I think Travis is cool with his girlfriend
on money.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, without doubt.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
I think he's good there because his girlfriend's a freaking billionaire.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Right, well, he's cool, they're cool on all of that.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
I just think that they're they're monetizing what they have
and you gotta be happy with that. And yeah, you
got to go to see it happening like that with
the lineman is is impressive. I think that's a great deal.
You know, whether it's his brother pulling it or not,
doesn't matter. They're both good together. I mean, you gotta
like their show that they got.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
The podcast is huge.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Podcast is really huge. The things that he's doing is
really good, you know. But I think I think a
show for him by himself is better than him doing
like after game interviews and things like that, or working
at the counter for for you know, Monday night football
and all that stuff. The reason I say that is
because when he has to be kind of you know, PC,
(04:11):
right what he's dealing with. But if you give him
his own show, he ain't got to be PC. He
can do whatever you want to do, say what you
gotta say. He can act up out in public he
chooses to or not, because you know he's gonna it's
it's gonna be part of the show, and so that
that's a whole different deal. And so I think that
that fits and suits him better and everybody thinks. I
think other people will be happy with that.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yeah, I agree, audience, and you can attest to this.
Jason Kelsey is a Hall of Famer as far as
being that. Yeah, it's too bad he didn't win the
Super Bowl against his brother though, because you know, Travis
is probably gonna have five or six by the time
this is done. All right, let's get into it. The
NFL over the weekend. Wow, let's just start with it
(04:52):
since we're on iHeart Sports Talk and more in the
Bay Area. Niners just got destroyed by Green Bay thirty
eight to ten. No, no Brock party, of course, I just
don't think they're a playoff team at this point with
all the injuries. Do you think, Derek, now, they from
what I understand, they've got an eighteen percent chance of
(05:14):
making the playoffs. So it's very, very likely they're not
in the playoffs again for this year. Do you think
that the Trey Lance trade a few years ago screwed
them up for depth by giving up those three first
round picks and not having you know, you know, first
round talent out there because they give up three first
round picks. I know they got a first round pick
(05:34):
last year with Ricky Pursol, but I just don't see
them as they're currently made up as a playoff team
with all these injuries. I you Deebo's always hurt, CMC
was hurt, and now brock Perty out. What's your take
on your team the forty nine ers, Now, well, I.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Think you got to look at it. They're struggling and
the injury bug has hit them and it's hurting, and
it's hurting them pretty bad. They're struggling at the quarter
back spot. If Perty goes down, and I think everybody
knew that.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
It's most teams though, it's most teams. If you lose
your franchise quarterback, you're got it screwed.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
It was. It was interesting though, that they played Alan
over Dobbs.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
I mean I didn't I could. I didn't see that
one coming. I thought Dobbs would be a better a
better decision to play. But I don't know, maybe something's
wrong with him. I don't have any idea, But what
I will tell you is that you look at this
team and they have they have opportunities to to win
(06:31):
some of the games that they've lost, right and they're
up and then all of a sudden boom, it like
implodes in the fourth when you take this game right here.
I mean I've said last week, I was saying, like, hey, look,
I think they got to colmost almost went out right
in order to have a real good shot, in order
to have a real good shot to get in every
(06:52):
games and must win every game. It's it's one game
at a time kind of situation, but every games a
must win.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
And and now you.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Have an opportunity because the guys that you're you're trying
to compete with, they lose, right like Minnesota lose, so
you're like the Rams loosen. So now you're like, okay,
all you got to do is win, and you're gaining.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Ground right right now they lose and now.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
They've they gained nothing and time is taking on them
and their schedule doesn't get any better. Now they're you're
you're looking at going into Buffalo. That loss was huge,
and I think that loss was bigger than what everybody
thinks it was.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
And yeah, you can blame it on injuries.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Yeah, I think they're five and six right now, and
they are five and six. Yeah, I don't think they've
got a really uh realistic chance of making the playoffs.
That's okay. I'm not saying that it's time to fire
Kyle and blow out John Lynch. I'm not saying that,
if anything, give them one more year to get yeah,
because well, if they come back healthy next year and
(07:48):
they don't do a first reform, it's possibly time to
make a move. Because Kyle Shanahan is zero for three
calling plays in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I mean, that's yeah, but let's let's let's okay, let's
back up a second. Hold on us back of a second. Okay,
you're in the super Bowl. That's the first thing we're
talking about, right, Okay, how many times has your team
been in the Super Bowl? So you you want to
get a coach that can get you there, first of all,
And if you're gonna tell me, if he doesn't win
it three times, you're gonna want to get rid of him.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I think you're gonna want to get there, and you
want to continue to get there, and you're gonna hope
that at some point he just gets over that hump.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
That's the dumbest thing you could have said, I don't
understand that.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Maybe he's had enough chances to where maybe he's lost
the locker room.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
The problem. I don't think he's lost the locker room.
I think I think you have you have problems with
injuries this year. I think you're gonna have problems with
trying to figure out You're gonna have to you have
to have problems with salary cap next year because you
gottaigure out what you're gonna do with Brock Right.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
And he's gonna have fifty five he's gonna want fifty
five million, you know, and.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Oh easily people.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
You paid, you paid CMC, you paid the warner, you
paid Hargrave, who's been hurt. I agree. I'm not saying
get rid of him. I'm just saying I think if
they don't go to deep in the playoff next season,
they need to think about maybe making a move at
the head coaching position. Just my opinion.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Just no, no, I think you're wrong. Tampa Bay, Tony Dungee.
Right was getting you there a year after year after
year after year. Never got over the hump. Right, and
then they bring in Gruten. They bring in Gruten, They
get the Super Bowl one time, and then they never
get it again, and they don't and then they don't
even go back to the playoffs. Right, So was it
worth it to get that one super Bowl and never
(09:28):
go back to the playoffs? What until you bring in
somebody else, you know, ten years later.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
What I'm saying is the way they have constructed this team,
the amount they have paid in salaries, and the players
that are under contract right now, if they don't go
deep into the playoffs next year, they're gonna have to
start losing a lot of these players.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Like they're they're not. They're not gonna keep all those
players next year. What are you talking about?
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Well, of course not, Debo's gone.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
They're gonna have to get rid of those players next year.
So like some of those guys gotta go.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
I agree. I agree. And if if you have a
brock Perdy making fifty five, he's gonna probably want sixty.
Dak Prescott is making sixty million dollars and he's never
taken the Cowboys. As far as Brock perty has taken
the front, you know, I never will. No, No, he won't.
And oh my god, the Cowboys that right there as
another team I wanted to bring out. I would to
(10:15):
bring up some of the teams that are kind of
the biggest disappointment so far this season. I think for
me the top three are the Cowboys. I think they
are just a joke with Jerry Jones.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
He is.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Not the guy to make personnel decisions at this point
because it's been thirty years. I don't think that Micah
Parsons is happy, obviously. I don't think that a lot
of players are happy. And I don't think this is
a roster that is ever going to win a playoff
game Cowboy. I mean what they've proven that, they've proven that.
(10:50):
Another big disappointment are the Jacksonville Jaguars that they were
great last year and what happened to them this year?
And you can always say in injuries, But is Doug
Peterson disconnected from his team that much? He's probably gone, right.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
I think he's probably gone.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I think, you know, you look at they had a
change in coaching and for the defense down there, they
got rid of one of the one I think one
of the top D line coaches that was out and Brinson,
Butnert that caused I think some problems down there, getting
rid of that defensive staff.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, he's got to be gone.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
There's there's a big disconnected and the guy doesn't want
to lose down there, and and and nobody.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
You can't afford to losing Jackson.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
It's just not con or something the owner.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Yeah, right, I think, and I think I agree with
you about Dallas. I also think the Giants are bad.
I think I think and the other team that I
think is bad. But I don't think it's really his fault.
I think is are the Raiders. And I don't think
that's that's not that's stan Antonio's fault. I think you
have to look at you gotta look at what he
(11:55):
wanted in the draft. He wanted to give up we're
going to get a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
He wanted to go to quarterback Daniels because he played
with him.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Right, He wanted a quarterback, right, and and the GM
wouldn't give up everything to get a quarterback. Now you
can't get a quarterback. And if you go for a
quarterback next year, it's it's not worthy because all the
quarterbacks were in this year's draft.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Got oh, you really got his cam Ward and shoot Sanders.
That are close to what they came out last year,
you know, right, surprising one obviously and he got into
It's all about a quarterback getting into the right situation.
I'm right at the time, look at Bo Knicks and
the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton is a great play caller,
and he knew, yeah, he knew that Nicks is just
(12:40):
kind of a clone to Drew Brees. He knew that
he would run that system exactly how he wanted to.
And the guy played, and he started sixty five games
in college. It's like an all time record. He was
ready to go to the NFL. And I'm just happy
to see that. Even though I'm a Charger fan, I'm
glad to see Denver doing well because once he got
rid of Russell Wilson, that was Oh he was getting
(13:02):
some major heat for that, but turns out it was
good for both. Right.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
I think it was a great move by him. I
don't I don't think you should have taken any heat
for getting rid of Russell Wilson. That wasn't the quarterback
that he wanted when he got there.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
He was already there, yeah, right.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
And so for your system, you have to find the
guy that's gonna fit your system, and Russell just didn't
fit it. It was you know, you can call it.
You know, he didn't give him a chance. You can
say whatever you want to say. It just he didn't
think that that was the guy for his system. And
now he has a guy that fits his system and
you can see what he's doing with them, and it's
working out well for him.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Dude, that that was on my next up my list.
Where's the Raiders? He mentioned them and the Jets. The
Jets are a dysfunctional shit show. Aaron Rodgers was not
the answer. And anytime you get somebody like Woody Johnson,
an owner meddling like that making personnel decisions, I E.
Jerry Jones, I E. You know whoever else, it's gonna
(13:53):
it's gonna end up badly. And this is just And
you never fire a coach midseason.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Solo was strong.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Salah was strong. They should have left him in this position.
You know, I like the move with jeff Oldbrick, but
that put him in a terrible situation.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Did you play with him?
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah? I did, yeah, but but.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
I think it was It's just a hard situation to
be put in, especially in the in the middle of
a season, like come on, man like and and and
he never would I think he had he had an
opportunity to get rid of him before the season.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
He chose not to.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
Except if you're gonna not take it, then why wait,
you know, four five, six, seven games and then say, okay,
he's gone, Like that doesn't make sense to him, that's.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Crazy, It doesn't. And Aaron Rodgers is obvious, not obviously,
you're you're a former professional football player. Has his have
his skills eroded? Or is it just because he's in
the scheme he wants to be in with Nathaniel Hackett?
Is is his his his skills are roded to the
point where he is not the quarterback he was even
a couple of years ago.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
I don't think his skills have eroded. I think you
got to look what's around him and what's there.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
And he got playmakers, he's got plays got yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
But what he got in front of him, he's.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Got well, they went out and got Tyrons, they got
Morgan Moses, who's got hurt?
Speaker 2 (15:05):
You got you got yeah? So what do he got?
What does he have in fun of him?
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Once again, once once again, you gotta look at you know,
the offensive line has gotta he's got to feel comfortable.
And when you look at some of those games he's
getting hit left and right, and it's not it's not
so you can't you can't be him. It can't be him.
He's not the one that wants to take those shots.
A lot of times. It's the line and it's it's breakdowns,
(15:31):
and it takes a time for that mine to start
to jail and get back, you know, get together and
understand the weakness and strengths of each other. Only because
they don't practice enoughing pads anymore. They don't have long, strong,
you know, training camps in the summer, and that's the
position that really benefited from having those things. Might not
be the skill guys that had it, might not be
(15:52):
the quarterback, but the offensive line they got to really
benefit from having those long, drawn out practices. You got
the benefit from having two a days. They got the
benefit from hats to being able to see every blitz
before we get into the season. And now they don't
have that.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Got it? Got it all right? So one other team
I wanted to mention, and you mentioned the earlier the
Giants released Daniel Jones. Where do you see a spot
for him? I live in Vegas, so we're we're hearing
a lot Hey, bringing to Vegas, bring to Vegas. Is
there a spot that he could choose just because they
they're going to need a starter next year? Is there
(16:28):
anything that you can think of?
Speaker 3 (16:30):
To me, the Raiders is the best situation to be
a starter. Now, does he want to take on a team,
you know, leaving a team like he was at taking
coming to a team that is going to be similar
right now?
Speaker 2 (16:44):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Like so midseason, you know, correct?
Speaker 3 (16:48):
You know, well, I think that was a wise move.
I don't think that was I think that was a
smart move by the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
It a terrible higher, you know.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
It was a terrible higher.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
But I think he made the right move by getting
rid of him and getting rid of them, you know,
right away. And that just tells me that he's not
taking anything, and he's gonna, you know, you get it.
You gotta do your job otherwise you're gonna get be
on the road. And I agree with that, and I
think that's that's how he runs it. That's how he
likes to run it, and that's how it is, and
that's how it should be run. I think Daniel Jones
would be wise to look at the Raiders because once
(17:19):
again we're talking about one or two quarterbacks that'll come
out next year that'll be worthy of anything. Right, You're
not going to have a prethora of them. You're not
going to have five, six, seven guys. So if they
don't get into the top five in the you know,
in the draft, then they're probably not going to get that.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Guys are going one, two or three, right.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
And that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. So
if you're not getting in the top five, you're not
getting you have a shot. So so and if they
weren't willing to trade this year for guys and give
up some good picks, what makes you think they're going
to give up those picks next year? So so for him,
it would be wise to go ahead and say, hey, look,
let's let me see what I can do down here.
(18:03):
At least I got a spot, because he's probably better
than what they have there right now, right, And it
makes sense for that. So if he's smart, he's probably
talking to him trying to get there now.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
All right. One other team that is kind of just
actually there's two teams in the NFL this season that
looked great and now it's kind of like Huh, what
the hell is happening? Washington Commanders have lost three straight.
I drank the kool aid. I was saying, Oh, they're gonna,
they're gonna play, They're gonna they're gonna be in the
NFC Championship with the Lions. This is a great team.
And then all of a sudden, Jaden Daniels just kind
(18:35):
of looks lost. He's got some weapons, they got a
good defense. I don't even know what their injuries are
right now, but man, he has just looked out of
sorts the last three games. Have you had a chance
to watch any of these last three Washington Commanders games, Derek.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
I've watched a couple of, like two of the last three.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
But what I'll tell you is is that it's Washington, right,
and everyone talks about, Okay, they were on a run
there and a run there on the road there on
the n and then the hair comes the second half
of the season.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, we talked about this.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
You know before, about how when guys, guys are young
and you get to the second half of the season,
sometimes you start to hit that little wall because you
know you're done. You know you're finished in college, right,
You're if you're not in the playoffs here, it's over.
So you got one ball game that you got to wait, like,
you know, four weeks to play. So but now you know,
(19:30):
so now he's continuously going. Maybe a little drained, right,
maybe a little hard to keep going.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
You also think this with the Commanders. They're kind of
like a Chargers and the fact that they've just had this,
you know, new head coach, new GM and it's like
it takes a while to build a roster. Like the
Ravens beat the Chargers tonight and you could tell that
that Ravens roster was so solid from top to bottom.
And the Chargers and the Commanders are going to take
(19:58):
a couple of years just to get those kind of players.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
You know, you got to give them.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
You got to give them at least four years to
really get something turned around. And the reason that you
have to is because there's so many guys you have
to replace it for your system to work, whether that's
an offensive system you're looking for or a defensive system,
you got to be able to get all your guys.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
And you can't get them all in one year or
two years.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
It takes three or four sometimes, and especially if you're
going to develop the talent by pulling in in guys
through the draft.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Right.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
So when you look at Washington, though, everybody was talking about,
I think the second half is going to be different
because I think now people know what they can do. Right,
they shock some people, and now you got to see
what they can do. The Chargers have shocked some people. Right,
So now you take the Ravens. What happened tonight, I
think when you look at what exactly happened, that D
(20:46):
line overpowered that O line and they weren't ready for that.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
They just were not ready for it.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
And they were running through them and running around them
and running right over the top of them. It just
didn't matter. They were getting Herbert as soon as they
want to. Yeah, And he was taking hit after hit
after hit after hit. There's nothing you can do. And
and on top of that, when you're best receiver is
a rookie in the game, you got a problem, man,
Like come on, Like those other guys were just dropping
(21:14):
and they're hitting them square in the hands, and I'm like,
are you kidding me?
Speaker 1 (21:18):
They got rid of Keenan Allen, got rid of Mike Williams.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Mike Williams. Yeah, but they didn't have a choice really though.
They had to do those things. And I think that's
why you have to give. You have to give time
in order to now rebuild the spot the pieces that
you had to let go, and they're gonna be fine
in three years.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
I think. I ain't know.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Football is a guy that you got to know, Like
he turns around things pretty quick, and once he gets
it going, you're either on on the on the train
or you're just off.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
And you know, it comes down to Jaden Daniels. He's
a star, He's going to be a star. He's gone.
There's one other team I want to mention. Then we
can wrap this up in the NFL that was looking
great and and kind of looks lost right now. The
Houston Texans. They lost to the Tennessee Titans last weekend
and it was like CJ. Stroud, I know he lost
(22:07):
Stefon Diggs early. He lost him for the year. Uh.
Nico Collins has been in and out of the in
and out of the lineup. UH take Dell. He's been healthy.
But with that, is that something that a quarterback needs
to have those wide receivers he can count on, Like
you just mentioned the Chargers, Well, they got to get
rid of those guys. They got one rookie is there,
number one?
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Right.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
It was not even about just having guys that you
can count on. It's having guys that you trust, got it,
that you believe in, Guys that you know, hey, if
I throw that up, he's gonna get it. And he's
if he's not gonna get it, he's gonna fight to
make sure the other guy doesn't get it. So I think,
you know, CJ's had that, right and now he doesn't,
and so he's They're they're fighting on and off weekend
(22:48):
and week out.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
You know.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
You look at what they did the week before against
against the Cowboys, right right, you know, and and so
exactly it's like and they're coming off of that week
it was it was so you're like, I think they
got it.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
You know.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
Houston. Houston's another one of those teams that just changed
the culture there with the Demiko Dimiko right right, Yeah,
who was a great, great player in Houston, and he
was obviously a great defensive coordinator for your Niners. And
I think that's just another team that is gonna be
good here in a couple of seasons and keep going.
And they just got to build it. They've got great
players like in Will.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
And they're gonna build it. And they got to not
get hit with the injury. Yeah, injury bug.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
And they got to keep the like every team got
to keep the quarterback up right, you know what I'm saying. Awesome,
all right, everybody will want to thank you for being anything.
Thank you, Derek. I was gonna go into details about
my uh my big week last week, but I'm not
