Demystifying the financial aid process for East Coast colleges with a detailed breakdown of the FAFSA and CSS Profile applications. I explain the critical differences between these two financial aid forms and how to maximize your chances of receiving the funding you deserve.

• FAFSA basics: Opens October 1st annually and serves as gateway to federal grants, work-study, and loans
• Submit FAFSA early as some aid is distributed first-come, first-served
• CSS Profile: Required by many private East Coast colleges for institutional aid
• CSS Profile differences: More detailed financial assessment including home equity and business value
• Common mistakes include missing deadlines, listing wrong colleges, and not reporting special circumstances
• Millions in aid goes unclaimed each year because families don't complete the process correctly
• Resources available through StudentAid.gov, College Board, and individual college financial aid offices

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Hello and welcome back to the East Coast College
Admissions Podcast.
I'm your host, cleopatra, andtoday I'm diving into one of the
most critical and oftenmisunderstood aspects of the
college admissions processFinancial aid.
If words like FAFSA and CSSProfile make your head spin, you
are not alone.

(01:28):
But don't worry, I'm breakingit all down, especially how
these forms apply to the EastCoast colleges you are targeting
.
Whether you're a parent tryingto help your student or a
student navigating this solo, bythe end of this episode you'll
know what to do, when to do itand how to maximize your aid.

(01:52):
Let's start with the FAFSA, theFree Application for Federal
Student Aid.
The FAFSA is your gateway tofederal grants, work-study
opportunities and federalstudent loans.
It is also used by mostcolleges to determine
eligibility for need-basedfinancial aid For East Coast
colleges.

(02:13):
This form is most alwaysrequired, whether you are
applying to a public universitylike the University of Maryland,
or a private one like NYU orBoston College.
Now let me share with you somekey FAFSA tips.
It opens October 1st each year, though 2024-2025 versions had

(02:34):
delays.
The earlier you submit yourFAFSA, the better.
Some aid is first come, firstserved.
You will need tax returns, w-2sand asset info for the students
and parents.
If your family's situation haschanged drastically, like loss
of income, divorce, etc.

(02:55):
You can request a professionaljudgment from the college a
professional judgment from thecollege.
Now let's talk about the CSSprofile.
Unlike the FAFSA, which is freeand standardized, the CSS
profile is a more in-depthfinancial aid application
administered by the collegeboard and it's used by many
private East Coast colleges toaward institutional aid.

(03:18):
East Coast colleges thatrequire the CSS profile include
Columbia University, duke,amherst, boston College,
wesleyan University of Richmond, tats and many more.
Here are some key CSS profilenotes it asks for more detailed
financial data, including homeequity, business value and
non-custodial parent info ifapplicable.

(03:41):
It has a fee, but there are feewaivers also available.
And, last but not the least, deadlines vary by school, so
always check with each college.
So, fafsa versus CSH Profilewhat's the difference?
Let's break it all down.
Fafsa and CSH Profile bothassess financial need, but they

(04:06):
do it differently.
While the FAFSA is free, cshProfile costs money, though
there are some free waiversavailable.
Fafsa is federal and some stateaid, while CSH Profile is an
institutional aid from privatecolleges, aid from private
colleges.
Fafsa is a standardized form, but CSH profile is more detailed

(04:27):
and can be customized.
The FAFSA is based on tax info, but then for the CSH profile it
can include home equity, medical expenses etc.
So it's important to completeboth if your college requires
them.
You won't be considered for afull aid without following their
specific process.
Now here are some commonmistakes to avoid.

(04:48):
Let's talk about what not to do.
Number one missing deadlines.
Some East Coast colleges haveearly aid deadlines for early
action decision applicants.
Point number two listing thewrong colleges.
Make sure that every collegeyou're applying to is listed in
the correct spot on each form.
Number three not reportingspecial circumstances.

(05:11):
If you've had a job loss, highmedical bills or other financial
disruptions, you must contactthe school financial aid office
directly and let them know.
Last but not the least, skipping the CSS profile because
it's too complex.
Let's take it step by step orwork with a counselor, because
it will be worth the effort.

(05:33):
Navigating financial aid canfeel overwhelming, but you don't
have to do it alone.
Every year, millions of dollarsgo unclaimed because families
assume they won't qualify orthey miss key steps.
So here are a few resources tocheck out Studentaidorg for
FAFSA, cssprofilecollegeboardorgfor CSS Profile East Coast

(05:58):
College's financial aid website.
Many have video tutorials andchecklists and, last but not the
least, east Coast Admissions.
We help families get throughthe maze every single day.
