In this episode, I was so excited to sit down with Brad Hahn, Executive Director of Explore Buffalo, at its headquarters inside the historic First Presbyterian on Symphony Circle. Brad shares how Explore Buffalo began over a decade ago in a tiny office that was literally a closet and has since grown into a thriving organization with seven staff members and over 200 dedicated volunteers. Together, they reflect on the organization’s incredible growth and its role in Buffalo’s resurgence as a hub of architectural and cultural pride. From its early days of word-of-mouth promotion to today’s dynamic, ever-expanding tour offerings, Explore Buffalo has become an integral part of showcasing the city’s unique charm.

Brad reveals how his early love of Buffalo’s historic architecture, sparked by childhood visits to the Central Library and neighborhood tours, shaped his path toward founding Explore Buffalo. He recounts the pivotal moment in 2011 when Buffalo hosted the National Historic Preservation Conference, igniting local interest in preserving and celebrating the city’s architectural treasures. Brad also discusses the innovative yearly membership program that has made tours accessible to thousands, encouraging locals to explore neighborhoods like Kaisertown, South Buffalo, and beyond. With over 150 different tours and 2,000 annual tour dates, Explore Buffalo connects Western New Yorkers and tourists alike to the city’s rich history and vibrant culture.

Looking ahead, Brad teases exciting plans for 2025, including new tours focused on Seneca Indigenous history and a series of free Erie Canal Bicentennial tours. He emphasizes the importance of rigorous docent (tour guide) training to maintain the high-quality experiences Explore Buffalo is known for, ensuring participants leave each tour with a deeper appreciation of the city. Whether it’s a leisurely bike ride through Frederick Law Olmsted’s parks or a walking tour of hidden architectural gems, Explore Buffalo has something for everyone. Tune in to hear Brad’s inspiring journey and learn how you can join the adventure of uncovering Buffalo’s past while celebrating its present and future.
