Speaker 2 (00:48):
Welcome to Fostering Success with Doctor Adam Starks. In this episode,
we are talking about being a jack of all trades
and why it is essential for success. Here we go. Now,
when you think about a jack of all trades, many
(01:08):
of us think about the quote with a negative connotation.
You know, a jack of all trades, but a master
of none, and that means someone who was unfocused and
unable to hone in on whatever they may be talented at,
if they're talented at anything. However, that full quote and
(01:31):
just bear with me here. A jack of all trades
is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a
master of one. All right. It was meant to be
a compliment, and I want to dive into that as
a compliment because many of us don't know what we
want to do. And that's why, even if we're unhappy
(01:54):
with the status quo, we maintain tain it because we
just don't know what else to do. At least we're
making income, at least we're making ends meet, at least
we're paying our bills, and that has to be enough
for now until we figure it out. However, I want
to encourage you to try something new, all right. Take
(02:19):
take a class, and it can be pothering. It could
be learning a new instrument, to find a passion, to
reignite whatever it is you're supposed to be doing now.
I may preach against the status quo, but as long
(02:41):
as it sustains you, there's nothing wrong with it. But
if you want more, we only have this one life,
you know. One of the phrases that I can't stand
is oh, wait your turn or wait, wait for your time.
There's no waiting. Time is fleeting. It's not going to
come back to us, and we have to learn to
(03:06):
flow with it like water. I mean, you think, think,
about the river, for example, right that water that comes
through there is not coming back right, And so we
have to learn to flow with the currents of life
and just how they are. And sometimes sometimes things don't
(03:28):
don't flow our way, or we get lost out there
because the options are so vast and the world is
so vast, and we just don't know what we're supposed
to do right away. Right when I aged out of
the system at age eighteen and was no longer a
(03:49):
war of the state, I didn't have all the answers.
And even if I was in the nuclear household, you know,
which is the ideal in some cases, I wouldn't have
had all of the answers at eighteen. Wouldn't have However,
being a jack of all trades, whether you decide to
(04:11):
test out music or test out your cooking skills, you
may uncover skills that you never knew you had before,
and that will provide an escape from the mundane and
release the joy that may be hidden inside of you,
and that will spark the fire that's been shut up
(04:37):
inside of you for so long. So that's my challenge
to you. Most recently, I got into app development, and
I've been thinking about this for five years. It's an
app that is designed to help link community resources. And
(05:02):
what I love about this idea is it brings it
back to my book Broken Child, Mended Man, and how
the communities were able to come together and never give
up on me and never lose track of me in
order for me to succeed. Now was that situation perfect,
(05:25):
Absolutely not, but it was better than nothing, And it
was better than being lost forever and never knowing what
I could achieve and what I could accomplish had those
people not been there for me. So just something to
(05:46):
think about. Being a jack of all trades is not
necessarily a negative thing. You're supposed to experiment in this lifetime.
How else are you going to achieve what you want
to do. When people are lying on their deathbed, one
(06:10):
of the regrets, one of the most repeated regrets, is
they didn't do something that they wanted to do. Don't
leave this earth without looking for ways to say yes.
Saying yes takes courage. Saying yes to what you want
(06:37):
is not selfish. Okay, in some cases it may be
if you're sacrificing it for the well being of your
family or something like that, but by and large, if
there is something in this world that you feel called
and compelled to do, and it's not selfish, it's courageous,
(06:59):
and so I encourage you. I challenge you to be
courageous and just try, just try something different, try something
outside of your comfort zone, and see how far you
can push yourself. Then and only then will you achieve
(07:24):
the pinnacle of success. Until next time, thank you for
listening to Fostering Success.
