Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but potty training can quickly become overwhelming. In this insightful episode of Potty Talk Podcast, hosts Andrew and Gabe (joined by office dog Oakley) share game-changing tips for successful puppy potty training using Fresh Patch real grass.

The hosts walk through proper Fresh Patch setup - revealing why you should never remove the grass from its wax-lined box (it's designed to stay there!), why immediate unboxing is crucial, and how to position your patch for maximum longevity. They tackle common puppy parent questions about watering (don't do it!), introducing reluctant puppies to the grass, and timing your order perfectly for your new puppy's arrival.

What sets this episode apart is the hosts' explanation of why real grass dramatically outperforms artificial alternatives. Dogs instinctively recognize grass as their potty spot, making training faster and more intuitive. Andrew shares a compelling story about how his sick dog ignored artificial turf and sought out Fresh Patch grass, demonstrating dogs' natural understanding of real versus fake surfaces.

For apartment dwellers, busy professionals, or anyone bringing home a new puppy, this episode offers practical solutions that work with your dog's natural instincts rather than against them. The hosts introduce Fresh Patch's complete training system including the Stay Fresh spray, Go Here attractant, and Chicken Trainer treats - all designed to make potty training smoother for both pets and their humans.

Drew (00:02):
welcome back.
Welcome back to the potty talkpodcast presented by fresh patch
.
If you're new here, my name isandrew and this is my name is
gabe.

Gabe (00:12):
Nice to see you guys.

Drew (00:13):
Nice to see you and thanks for tuning in, whether that's
on youtube or just over yourfavorite podcast channel, if
you're just tuning in with yourheadphones or watching us and
beautiful people here on cameraand our beautiful office dog,
oakley, who was bottom of theframe episode one.
He's decided to join us on thecouch today.

(00:34):
So everyone say hi to Oakley.
This is, this is my personaldog, so we're going to shout him
out.

Gabe (00:40):
He is an office staple, always roaming around the halls,
so great to get him on camera.

Drew (00:46):
Yeah, finally, and he's a little tired right now, but
hopefully he pops his head upyou might not even be able to
see him in front of our grass, but yeah, this is Oakley Oakles
as another nickname for him, sowelcome him to the pod as well.
But yeah, just want to hop inhere for episode two.
I think give some people sometips and tricks for new puppies,

(01:07):
right absolutely today's allabout the puppies.

Gabe (01:09):
So you guys with new puppies looking looking to get a
new puppy.

Drew (01:14):
Uh, you've come to the right spot we're gonna.
We're gonna help you out withtips and tricks, if, uh, you
know, and the benefits of freshpatch with getting a new puppy.
So, um, yeah, say we just diveright in.
Huh, let's get into it, heckyeah.

Gabe (01:27):
Awesome, cool.
So take it away, gabe,absolutely.
So the first thing that we'regoing to talk about is setting
up the Fresh Patch.
You know, when you get a puppy, sometimes it can be stressful.
There's a lot of things goingon, so we want to make sure that
when you get your Fresh Patch, you know exactly what to do with
it.
So, drew, if you wouldn't mindgetting a little bit into the
setup, yes for sure.

Drew (01:46):
So yeah, setup is key.
With the fresh patch.
There's a lot of differentvariables that come with our box
and our grass.
So, first things first, do nottake your grass out of the box.
So upon arrival you willreceive your box just how it is
displayed on the table righthere.
So, different variations, whatever size you get.

(02:08):
It could come in a plastic trayor a wax line box, but for this
instance, set up with our waxline boxes, the box actually
acts and is designed to be thetray for the grass, so there's
no need to take it out.
We do have that mat like soilthat will protect from any leaks
or anything.
But this box is patented toreally be that tray for your box

(02:32):
.
So, like I said, it is waxlined so it'll prevent any leaks
, any soggy cardboard, anyaccidents and stuff like that.
So we do get videos sometimestagged in that people will just
take the grass right out of thebox and just lay it on their
patio or right on their floor, and we don't encourage you to do
that.

Gabe (02:51):
Save yourself a mess guys.
Yeah, Watch our first episode.
You know all about that.

Drew (02:54):
Exactly.
So yeah, tune into that firstepisode to get some more tips
and tricks as well, and we kindof dive into each size.
But, yeah, do not take out thegrass from the box.
It is designed to stay in there.
That's your whole unit, andthen, when it's ready to get rid
of it, all you do is toss thegrass out into the compost, your
box to the recycle bin and wedeliver a new one right to your

(03:16):
door.
So, key, don't take it out thebox.
It's designed to stay in thebox.

Gabe (03:21):
Absolutely.

Drew (03:23):
Yeah.
So next thing with set up too.
Uh, we always encourage you toopen it immediately.
Uh, we do have some productinstructions.
I can kind of give them a goodview.
There we go, and there's oakley, because he heard our chicken
chainer treats.
Uh, come onto the table.

Gabe (03:41):
So the pups love the treats guys.
Yes, they do.

Drew (03:43):
About the treats, I'll shout those out real quick, make
sure you check them out.
Freshpatchcom chicken trainertreats.
They are a hit uh, especiallywith here, with all the office
pups, our office pups areabsolutely spoiled and they are
our first testers.

Gabe (03:57):
And two paws up from that, yeah, definitely.
Yeah, two before pa, if theycould do four paws, four paws up
.

Drew (04:03):
Ok, so back to the scheduled programming, though.
We got our wax line boxes andwe really encourage you guys to
open it immediately, since it isa real grass product.
We don't want it being trappedinside.
It needs to breathe, it needsair, it needs sunlight, needs

(04:26):
air and needs sunlight.
So as soon as you get thatpackage delivered to your door,
make sure you open itimmediately.
Don't take it out of the box, just flip the lid upside down.
You can place it in the lid too.
We actually have the lid off tothe side.
We could probably demonstrate.
But, yeah, just open itimmediately, put it in your
designated spot, and then, ofcourse, like I said, there are
product instructions right onthe front of the box there.

(04:46):
If you do, you know, have somequestions or you kind of forget
what I'm telling you right now,we got a little tips right there
.
Next thing would be to doindirect sunlight.
So, since it is real, it'll dryup really fast if you have it
in direct sunlight all day, especially if you live in a
hotter climate.
So you will see the grass kindof deteriorate a little quicker

(05:07):
than it usually would if itwould be an indirect sunlight.
So some tips with that too, youcan have it in the sun.
I mean, like I just said, it'sreal grass, so you do.
It does need sunlight Plantslove the sun.

Gabe (05:16):
They do love the sun.

Drew (05:17):
Yeah, you know they like to breathe, they like to get
that sunlight.
I mean just like me.
But yeah, so we alwaysencourage indirect sunlight,
whether that's, you know, undera patio cover.
You can slip it under like apatio couch or table or
something.
If you do get a lot of directsunlight, you could even just
bring it in.
I always suggest that to peoplewho are living in hotter

(05:38):
climates, especially in thesummertime.
If you have AC, bring it in forthe day, have that AC on, like
you probably usually.
Uh, bring it in for the day, have that ac on, like you
probably usually would.
If it's a hot day, it'llsurvive a lot better than just
sitting out on the patio, andwhen you want it, you know it
starts to cool down in thenighttime you can just put it
out on the patio and you're goodto go.

Gabe (05:55):
So also helps with midnight potty breaks exactly
you don't have to open the patiodoor and that sort of stuff.
Exactly something to keep inmind.
Yep, exactly.

Drew (06:02):
Yep, exactly, and you know that that does go on set up too
.
This can be set up indoors oroutdoors.
So, whatever your preference is, you can always order two.
We do have a lot of customersthat will order two because they
want one inside and the patio.
But uh, for potty trainingpurposes, puppy training
purposes, like we're talkingabout on this episode, um,
having it outside is nice so youcan lead them to the grass, get

(06:23):
them on that routine of knowing, hey, we go outside to potty,
you know so when you dotransition into walks and you
know just public outings, theyknow they're outside real grass.
I'm going to go find real grassin real life and or a real
plant.
You're not going to go getembarrassed of them lifting
their leg on you know a plastictable, or you know a leg of a
chair or a restaurant orsomething.

Gabe (06:45):
So we don't want that, or at least a better chance of that
.
We don't want to make anyguarantees.

Drew (06:48):
Yes, exactly yeah it's a better chance You're training
them on something real and withyou know our training tips that
you can also find onfreshpatchcom.
Just leaving them out to thepatch gets them familiar with
what potty time is.
And know and of course, thoseverbal cues are very important.
So, um, yeah, uh, I thinkthat's pretty pretty much covers

(07:08):
it for setup.
Um, drop comments or questionson our social medias.
If you have anything elseregarding setup, we'd love to
answer.
Um and our our fine socialmedia team will make sure those
comments are answered, and youcan always call our customer
service to get those answers aswell.
So, um, yeah, moving on, um,you know down the list of setup,

(07:29):
if you are expecting a newpuppy, um, we get this question
a lot.
Um is when should I order?
So that's a huge, huge thing,um, since it is a real grass
product.

Gabe (07:39):
Um, so, gabe, yeah, if you want to touch on that a little
more of when, when people shouldorder if they're expecting a
new puppy absolutely, as, as yousaid, it can be a little tricky
because it is real grass andyou know, as we all know, this
product is designed to be thrownout and replaced.
So it's all about getting thattiming right.
You want to make sure that whenyou bring the dog home they

(08:00):
have a place to potty, right.
That's, that's going to be abig thing.
You know one thing that we cansuggest, because delivery times
can be variable, but you canalways reach out to our customer
service.
You're going to hear us saythat a lot, but they're always
there to help you guys withanything.
This is a specific instancewhich I think they are really
helpful.
They'll help let you knowexactly how long the grass is

(08:21):
going to take to get to you soyou can plan it out to get it.
You know the day before, theday of somewhere around there,
you know even the day after ifyou need.
But again want to make surethat you have grass within a day
or two of like bringing the doghome so that you can get going
on potty training right away.

Drew (08:41):
Exactly, yeah, never order in too early, because it is
real grass, so you know, if youorder in a month in advance,
it's not going to be ready forit.
It will eventually die by thetime you get that puppy in a
month.
So, like Gabe said, yeah, justmaking sure you're on schedule.
It is sometimes harder to time, but we have tools here.
Whether you reach out to us onsocial media, dm us or reach out

(09:03):
to our customer service, wewill help you in any capacity.

Gabe (09:06):
Absolutely yeah, we're always here to help you guys out
if you need, so feel free toreach out if you have any any
questions like that.

Drew (09:15):
Definitely.

Gabe (09:16):
Another thing, andrew.
A lot of people ask cause.
Again, we keep saying this isreal grass.
You know all this sort of stuff.
One thing that we all knowabout plants is you got to make
sure they're watered keep themthem alive.
So how do you approach wateringwhen it comes to fresh patch?

Drew (09:31):
yeah.
So great question.
Um, we encourage you not towater it.
So we have alternatives towatering, uh, to kind of help
prolong the life of the grass.
But like I've been saying, since it is real and your dog is
going potty on it, it willeventually die.
You will get those, uh, thoseclassic pea spots and stuff.
So that's why we reallyencourage you to get on
subscription so you're alwayshaving fresh grass readily

(09:54):
available to you.
Your dog's always got his pawson some fresh goodness.
You know what I mean.
Oh yeah, but typical question weget is can I water it?
And our direct answer is no.
We don't want you flooding it.
We don't want you pouring awhole bucket of water on it or
just getting a hose and hosingit down.
You will deteriorate the grassvery quickly.

(10:16):
It'll become honestly a littlemuddy.
It'll become very heavy.
The way the urine is supposedto drain into our mat-like soil
will kind of affect that.
It'll just be kind of a sloppymess.
So we really encourage to notfully water it.
We do offer a stay fresh sprayand that can be found on our

(10:37):
website, freshpatchcom.

Gabe (10:41):
You can buy that separately or in our starter set
.
You can see a bottle over there.
Yeah, a bottle over there.
Let's see if I can.

Drew (10:46):
I don't know if this might not be in frame, but there it
is.
Stay fresh, bray, do some ASMRfor you guys too.
Oh yeah, Lemongrass scented, itsmells delicious.
Yeah there you go.
This was our mascot's colognefor the longest time Patches.

(11:08):
He would spray this on daily.
So shout out patches, shout outpatches.
But yeah, so we really suggestgrabbing our stay fresh spray.
Um.
This is a very good alternativeto fully watering it like you
just I just demonstrated it'sjust a misting uh spray, so um,
and it is lemongrass scented.
Therefore, it will help prolongthe life of the grass.

(11:30):
In between your deliveries likeI mentioned being on
subscription, so say you haveyour delivery frequency set up
for every two weeks use this inbetween those two weeks to make
sure your grass is staying fresh.
It eliminates those pea stainsnot fully, but it'll just help
mitigate the browning of thegrass and stuff.
But I always suggest to spraythis after every time they go

(11:52):
potty, just to really ensure youdon't get any eliminating odors
.

Gabe (11:56):
It'll keep that grass nice and green and you're not
flooding it with a hose or abucket of water or something so,
and just to touch on that again, with the odors, um, if you
guys are worried about, you know, smells the grass does do a lot
of the heavy lifting there, like it really does like kind of
naturally mask some of thoseodors that you get when it comes
to potty time with your pups.

(12:17):
The stay fresh spray is perfectfor you know, putting it on,
like you said, after every useand that'll, you know, just do
an even better job of coveringup some of those odors that
you'll get.

Drew (12:28):
Definitely yeah.
And if you're kind of worried,I mean I got my big breed here,
yes, he does.
He does pee a lot.
So if you're a big, breed owner.
You know, gabe knows he's got,he's got a big boy too.
So yes, I do that, will youknow.
You're probably running the XLsize but it kind of goes a
little quicker because they havea bigger bladder.
Their pee's a little stronger,everything I will say.
The stay fresh spray does workreally well.

(12:49):
I'm a weekly for Oakley so I'lltake one home once a week just
because he is that bigger breeddog.
So I take an XL home everyFriday.
But that stay fresh sprayreally works until I'm bringing
one home again.
So it's a lifesaver for me.
It really does help, you know, prolong the life of the grass
for that week and stuff.
But yeah, you bigger breed, youbigger breed people, or you're

(13:12):
looking to get that puppy that'sgoing to be an Oakley one of
these days.
Big boy takes up a whole couch,95 pounds.
He's spoiled off these chickentrainer treats.
But yeah, it's just a nicelittle extra product we offer to
help prolong the life of thegrass.
So to keep it short and sweet, don't water it, okay.

(13:33):
Don't just don't water it witha hose or any type of a lot like
a lot of water, so it will ruinthe patch and you'll be calling
us the opposite of prolongexactly, exactly so awesome.

Gabe (13:45):
So another question um, you know I'm sure a lot of puppy
owners have you know puppiesare stubborn.
They don lot of puppy ownershave you know puppies are
stubborn.
They don't always do what youwant to do and everyone knows
who's potty trained before.
It's not a super fun and easyprocess.
So what do you do if you knowyou bring the puppy home and you
introduce him to the grass andhe doesn't initially associate

(14:06):
it with potty and he lays on itor he thinks it's a toy and that
sort of stuff.
How?
How do you think that theyshould handle that situation?

Drew (14:13):
yeah, for sure that's a great question.
Um, first things first is uh,we always suggest so if we're.
They're not pottying on it, um,versus laying.
You know, some don't potty onit but they don't even touch it,
or some just lay on it, um, itall goes back to training and
verbal cues, but, but the realtouch points are scent transfers

(14:33):
.
So we offer a Go here spraythat has attractant scent in it
that you can spray.
You can find that in ourstarter set or you can just buy
it by itself on FreshPatchcom, but it's a proprietary scent.
So what that means it'sattracting your dog to want to
mark its territory pretty much, and so if you spray that on they
, naturally they get attractedto like oh, what is this?

(14:53):
You know I like that smell.
I need to put my scent on it.
So that's like step number onethat we suggest.
If you're having struggles withpotty, training them or getting
them to go on the grass for thefirst time, you can always do
your own scent transfer too, andwhat we suggest with that is
getting a paper towel.
Say, the puppy does have anaccident, there's a puddle

(15:14):
somewhere, um, even if it's offa pee pad or something, you can
pick up the pee pad.
But, um, if you're juststarting with fresh patch and
they happen to have a littleaccident somewhere, you have a
puddle, grab a paper towel, wipethat puddle up and then go, rub
the paper towel on the grass, try to spread it out as much as
possible, and now they will havetheir scent on the grass,

(15:36):
leading them to want to go pottyand say, hey, you know that
that that's my potty spot.
My sense on there, I must, Ishould probably go there again,
type of thing so it tricks theirbrain into thinking oh my gosh,
this is where I need to goexactly exactly.
So, yeah, that's our tips, ourmain tips for the potty training
aspect of it.
If they just happen to lay onit, um, we do promote it as a

(15:57):
lounge area.
A lot of people will get it forthat.
But if your sole purpose is topotty train on it, it's all
about verbal cues and, uh,leading them to and from the
patch.
Uh, so you can find trainingtips on our website.
But a big thing with us is welike to say leash them up, get
them and pretend you're going totake them on a walk, and then
you just lead them to the patchand then give those verbal cues

(16:18):
of go potty, go potty, you know,or however you say it at home,
you know, the most typical is gopotty.
I would say yeah, but that'salso where our starter set comes
into play.
So for all you new puppy people, the starter set is clutch
because it does come with the Gohere spray, comes with that
Stay Fresh spray we were talkingabout before and it comes with
our Chicken Trainer treats.
So that's the key, right there.

(16:40):
Got to reward them, got toreward them exactly.
So you have those herbal cues, you're leading them there to the
leash.
But once they go, you got togive them praise.
That's where our chickentrainer treats come in and
that's why we created thestarter set to really help you
puppy parents out with, you know, getting them to go potty on
the grass.
So, um, yeah, if they're everlaying on it, just you know,
lead them away from there.
Or if you find them laying onit, tell them to get off, lead

(17:02):
them away from it and kind ofjust go back through your
routine.
Um, you have to be consistentwith puppy training.
So, um it, yes, the fresh patchdoes help out a lot.
But you know, sometimes puppiesare stubborn, like we were
saying.
So just keep, keep doing it,keep doing it.
You see them laying on it, getthem off, lead them back, say go
potty, spray some more, go here, spray on it, go potty, go

(17:24):
potty.
If they land on it again, justcontinue the process until they
finally get it right.

Gabe (17:29):
So and again, like drew said, if you have any specific
sort of situations or anythingyou want to you know need any
like more specific advice, please reach out to us and we'll
do our best to help you outwith that definitely sweet.

Drew (17:41):
Yeah, so I think we're giving a lot of good information
for the listeners and orviewers about puppy potty
training.
So if anybody is here lookinginto it, hope we can help you
out.
Um, just wanted to touch on onemore thing too, with you know
bringing new puppies home and, gabe, I think you can touch on
this, but the benefits ofstarting on real grass versus

(18:03):
our nemesis turf and plastic peepads.
So, yeah, why don't you touchon the benefits of you know
starting a new puppy on FreshPatch on fresh patch?

Gabe (18:14):
yeah, absolutely.
Um.
So again, potty training is noteasy.
Um, but one thing I can tellyou is that dogs, in general,
they are naturally attracted tograss.
Um, there's something in theirbrain that you know when they're
on grass and when they smellgrass, it kind of signals, kind
of potty time and it'sincredible what we see at events
too.

Drew (18:33):
When we do actually bring our grass to events, I mean
instantly, dogs are on it likedogs that have never seen the
grass before and they just go upand they know what it's for.

Gabe (18:41):
So, um, another thing with that.
You know, of course, um, a lotof our customers live in
apartments and you know theirdogs are going to be long-term
users of fresh patch um, so youknow, getting them ready for
that long-term usage.
But if for um, you know, let'ssay, you live in a house or
something like that and you planon um eventually transitioning
them to go outside, you want tomake sure that they know where

(19:05):
to go, where the right places togo and where not to go.
Um, so they'll already be usedto using grass.
So when you're taking them onwalks, when when you're letting
them outside, they'll knowexactly where to go um I don't
know if you had any additionalpoints put on there.

Drew (19:18):
Yeah, no, that's, that's pretty much.
I mean, it's just like gabesaid, it's real grass.
So, and like I said too, I mean, every time we've laid this
grass out for a dog that's neverseen it before, we don't even
have to spray the go here, sprayon it like they instantly want
to sniff it.
They're what is this?
They will pee on it or they'll,you know, kind of scratch at it
.
They're curious about itinstantly.
So that's the a huge benefitthat it's real.

(19:41):
We're not giving turf, we'renot giving plastic.
Um, it's not going to confusethem.
Uh, the best, the best exampleI've given was with when I first
got Oakley.
Um, I did have turf in my patio.
I never had a dog, so I wasjust rocking, just rocking turf
for for me.
And then when we got him, hepeed on the turf a few times.
It smelled horrible.
I was like I gotta get rid ofthis and start bringing a fresh

(20:01):
patch home.
But while I had both, he gotsick, and if your dog has ever
gotten sick, they like to eatgrass.
It helps with their stomach, ithelps to.
You know, um usually gets himto throw up or something, so
he's freaking out.
I'm like what, what's he doing.
He's at the door pacing.
I'm like, oh he and he'sgagging and stuff.
I'm like, oh man, this, thisdude's gotta throw up like and.

(20:23):
I.
So I let him outside and heinstantly goes to the turf and
he starts freaking out even more.
He can't, he can't eat thatstuff.
He's clawing at it and I'mstarting to freak out because
I'm like dude, I know exactly, know exactly what he's trying to
do and he can't do it.
So what did I do?
I said Oakley, come here, lookover here, and I led him right
to the fresh patch.
I mean, he locked eyes on thatthing, went straight to it and

(20:46):
just started going at it and hewill never, ever bite or eat the
grass when I bring it homeusually.
So the fact that he went thereand just like saw the turf
freaked out, didn't know thiswould help him or knew that this
wouldn't help him, and then sawthe grass and started eating it
the dude, I don't even.
He didn't even throw upactually so like it helped with

(21:08):
him.
So I was like, wow, look at that, like that's just another
benefit I mean absolutely notsaying he should get this for to
mitigate dog sickness right butthat's just the benefit of you
know, this is real, this is areal product, versus, if they go
to turf, they're confusedwhether that's a full-grown dog
who's seven, eight years oldversus a new puppy.
So that's just you know.

(21:28):
I like to give that example.
Ever since that happened to me,I was like whoa, this is
another, another touch point, you know so I really think that
you guys will be surprised.

Gabe (21:37):
Um, you know the way dogs instincts when they get to the
grass.
Like I said, they they knowit's for potty time, but you
know they.
There's so many reasons thatdogs love grass and cats like.
That's something that we'vebeen coming to realize recently
is that cats love the grass tooyeah, um you know sometimes for
different reasons, sometimes forthe same reason so um, again,

(21:58):
you want to let their instinctsrun wild and you can't do that
with p pads, you can't do thatwith fake grass.
So fresh pads is where it's at.
Uh, for new puppies, for oldpuppies, for everybody yeah,
definitely.

Drew (22:10):
So we kind of went off a little bit with some other
things, but overall, this was tomainly focus on you new puppy
owners.
Hopefully our tangents helpedout with the decision on Fresh
Patch as well.
I really think it's ano-brainer decision If you are
bringing a new puppy home.
Don't go for the plastic peepads, don't go for the turf.

(22:31):
You're going to have a bad time, you're going to have more
messes, you're going to havesmells.
It's just going to be a longerprocess of potty training um so
get fresh patch, get the realgrass, so let your puppy the
right way exactly.
Yeah, good pets get it and youwant your.

Gabe (22:45):
You want your pet to be a good pet your pet's a good pet
no matter what, but he's an evenbetter pet he uses fresh patch
because good pets get it exactlyand good pets get it so cool.
