Artless, Mendacious, Quiescent

In the utterly peculiar town of Noodleknob, Farmer Plainville was famous for his artless (meaning: simple, sincere, without deception) conversations with his cows. Every morning, he strolled through his field, chatting in an artless way, like, “Hello, Daisy. I hope you’re feeling moo-velous!”

One day, the mayor invited a traveling magician who promised he could teach cows to juggle apples. The magician was extremely mendacious (meaning: habitually dishonest, lying), boasting, “I trained invisible unicorns to do algebra!” Farmer Plainville tried to warn everyone, “He’s being mendacious — in other words, he’s lying through his top hat!” But the townsfolk were dazzled.

Meanwhile, the cows in the field remained quiescent (meaning: quiet, inactive, at rest), totally still and uninterested in juggling apples or learning algebra. “I love how my cows are so quiescent,” Farmer Plainville smiled, watching them nap under the sun. “This quiescent bunch could win a statue contest.”

When the magician told more mendacious stories—like cows secretly running a lemonade stand—Farmer Plainville shook his head and replied in his artless, honest way, “We all know cows just like to be quiescent, and you, sir, are being mendacious for sure!”

Eventually, the townspeople wised up. When Farmer Plainville politely but artlessly stated, “Let’s all just enjoy a quiescent afternoon and ignore mendacious magicians,” the cows mooed in agreement.

And so, everyone in Noodleknob remembered: 
Artless means honest and simple, 
Quiescent means quietly inactive, 
And mendacious means someone who just keeps telling whoppers.
