Speaker 4 (04:19):

Speaker 3 (05:46):
A long time. Well, Doc, Yeah, he's in bad shape, Marshall.
The worst is something that's bothering his breathing. I don't

(06:07):

see if it goes away.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
If he lives next few days, he'll post him.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Oh he's dark, I know, I know, I don't know.
But I'll stay right here with him. Why did I
have to send him? Why did I go? Oh, I
don't blame myself.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
I didn't I yes.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Been uh Doc, Okay? Can I talk to him?

Speaker 2 (06:31):

This?

Speaker 6 (06:37):
For me?

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Going after those men, I'm gonna bring him back alive,
or at least half alive. In the street outside waves
a heap move back and forth, making things seem unreal,

(07:04):
like Chester line up there docks that seemed unreal. Somehow
I walked down to the jail and I went inside,
and I sat there for a while, and then only
once I got up and unbuckled my guns, and I
hung 'em on a peg behind the desk, and I
went over to the Texas Trail.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
I'm over here, Matt.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
Sit down, m Matt. I heard about Chester. How is he?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
They were in here bothering you. Who were they, kiddy?

Speaker 5 (07:49):
I never saw him before. One was a kind of
weasel faced man named Trevitt, and the other big.

Speaker 6 (07:56):
Man, real brot named Stowbo.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
I think I see what out fit they say?

Speaker 6 (08:07):
Would it be the crow track?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:11):
The crowd tracks holding I heard up the river?

Speaker 3 (08:15):
I kt kidding.

Speaker 5 (08:16):
Wait a minute, Mat, Yeah, no business of mine, I ask, But.

Speaker 6 (08:21):
Who are your guns?

Speaker 2 (08:22):
It would have been easier for Chester to fitter shot
him and killed him, but I don't so I'm not
gonna shoot them. Chester dies, I'll see him hanged otherwise
otherwise what, Matt? I don't know.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
But I'm gonna bring him back and we'll wait and see.

Speaker 6 (08:40):
You're taking an awful chance.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Maybe, Oh, Matt, please be careful? Sure? Uh kidding?

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Here man looking on Chester once in a while, William, Oh,
of course, I will don't worry about it. H Thank you, kiddy.
So I'm Marshall, what is it?

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Challow?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
I'll walk outside with you. W Marshall, I wanna ride
after those cowboys with you, no shadow. I'm going alone,
but we could usually hear at the jail here. I'm
gonna take two prisoners. I don't know when or how,
but I need a jailer when they come in, so
i'll bring 'em in within then I'll no, that's something

(09:35):
I have to do alone. Marshal, you're a stubborn mad
but okay, I'll do it.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Tease her in my desk. Uh, here's my horse, I'm
going now.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
See. Uh wait a minute, Marshall, you're not armed. I
know it, shallow goodbye? It was a good boy that office.

(10:20):
Who's the trail boss here? Where is he? Here? I am?
And I don't need any rider? Maybe not?

Speaker 3 (10:27):
But you got two writers I need?

Speaker 2 (10:29):
How's that? Just? What do you want? Miss? That's the
crow track outfit, isn't it? That's right? I'm looking for
a couple of your men called Stowbow and Truble. I
ain't here a misters. Now? Where are they?

Speaker 8 (10:42):
But come back this afternoon, picked up the gatherings and left,
didn't even wait to get paid off.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
I'm telling you this just cause they're no good and
I'm glad they're gone. Which way they go? I wouldn't
tell you if I knew many I didn't think you would.
Who are you anyway? I mean you us Marshall of
the Dutch and so well.

Speaker 8 (11:04):
I don't know what you want them for, and I
don't care, but I ain't gonna take a Marshall put
sold on her tail. You'll at least taking club if
you're going after that Stowbull.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
He's mean, he's big. Besides being a Texas we've hung
Texans up here before, mister Marshall. Yeah, I heard Stowboll

(11:41):
and Trivet say they were hidden wist following the Arkansas.
Where are you from, Son, Texas near Waco? And what
are you sniveling around in forming on these men for?
That's Stobull Kickney knock me down in Kickney. Alright, Son,
I'll right along the Arkansas that you ride back to

(12:02):
Texas and learn how to fight your own battles.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
We will return for the second act of gun Smoke
in just a moment, but first, the conventions start next Monday,
when the Republican Party takes over Chicago, CBS Radio's greatest
reporting names and the core of technical experts manning mobile
units and studios covering the convention floor and corridors are
all set to bring you history as never before. Whatever happens,

(12:42):
wherever it happens, you'll miss nothing when you tune in
the Conventions on CBS Radio starting next Monday. Now the
second act of gun Smoke.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
I cut straight down to the Arkansas and followed it west.
I rode close to the water, where I could use
the sound of it for only my cover. After an
hour or two, I spotted a hobbled horse alone Snowboe
Treppic must have separated. I got down and followed the
animal's tracks as best I could in the moonlight, until
I cut the dying cools of the campfire on the bank.

(13:24):
Ahead to one side, I could make out the huddle
figure of a man asleep in his blanket. Took a
long time to crawl to his head, where I saw
the weasel face of the man, Trevit. His gun belt
lay on a saddle blanket, easy reach. I stood up
and heaved it out into the river, and as Trevit

(13:47):
sat up with a snap, I kicked him back.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Don't you don't you?

Speaker 2 (13:52):
You set up again, and I'll smash your skull, Trevit.
Don't kill me.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
Don't kill me.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Shut up.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
I was a rope.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
I told you to light down. Now, where's your rope
under my satellite? He gonna lynch me? No, but you
may hang legally if you live that long. Now, keep
your arms in that blanket and life still well. I
get you roped up here? Oh are you mister? I'll

(14:25):
do it. Let's just say I'm a good friend of
a man you dragged out a dodge this morning. Stubo
was in on that too.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
It was his idea. He did it.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Don't worry.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
I'll find Stobo.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
He ain't gonna leave me like this.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I'll be back. You ain't he pay it good? Too
bad for you. I'm not now travel and I'm gonna
throw you across my horse and tie you on. He'll
take you under dodge right to the jail. When you
get there, teld who you are if you can still talk,

(15:02):
and you'll give you a nice clean cell.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
You're the Marshall.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
I'll be back when I find Stowboll.

Speaker 9 (15:08):
You can't do it, Marshall, Oh dying that sun? Ride
like that across a horse? No, no, listener, Stobo's about.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
A mile upward.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
We had a round.

Speaker 6 (15:21):
I left him.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
See, I told you, Marshall, let me go, now.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
Trevit, how would you like to go to dodge behind
my horse with a roper on't Marshall, don't kill me.
I'll pack you on now. I tied Trevor across my
horse and started him off in the direction of the dodge,

(15:46):
and then I forgot about him. Stobell was next. I
rode west on Trevitt's horse, Dawn was just breaking when
I saw him crouch behind the campfire cooking breakfast. His
horse was saddled and stood nearby. I rode straight up,

(16:07):
got down.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
And walked over.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
You lost stranger. No, I'm not lost, Tobo. No tricks, mister.
I don't see your gun, but no trick, relaxed Stuble.
I'm unarmed, Why, Matt.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
Dillon, I'm a US Marshall, not a dodge.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
You're a long way from dodge, marsh Stowbo, you and
your pal had some fun with a friend of mine yesterday.
You hurt him bad, maybe you killed him. You rode
out here without a gun to tell me that you're
the craziest marshal I ever saw. I'm gonna shoot you,

(17:01):
Marshall and bury you in the river. What do you
think of that? I expected you wouldn't, eh. But unless
you want it on your conscience that you refuse to
feed a man on the trail, you better give me.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
A piece of that pork first.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
You're about the coolest man I ever.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Saw, Marshall. Do I eat shore you?

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Shure? You just stand right there across the fire and
don't move. I have to shoot you before you've been fed.
I know it's too bad. I only got one dish
for your last meal, Marshall. A man can keep sassy
on meat along stowbo. Yeah you sure can't. Well, looks

(17:44):
about done at least this here piece. You can't. All right?
I got your guns and I'm trying to think.

Speaker 7 (17:53):
You burn me.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
You you not shut up and get on your horse.
Don't be like to your horse helda get out there?
Are you just set that sumber? I'm gonna throw a
noose around your next so keep your hands down. Hannah.

(18:18):
Are you right toward Dodger? And you do anything I
don't like, and I'll jerk you off your horse and
dragon the rest of the way. All right, Jails on

(18:42):
the letter you see it. I see it.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
All right.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Pull up, Shiloh, Shiloh, ah, Hello, Marshall, this other one, yeah, private,
get here more.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
Dead and alive. But he's here. That was rough, Marshall,
real rough.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
Yeah, Chilo, how about Chester coming dark?

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Ain't chew yet, but he's alive. Lock stowbo up.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
I'm going over to the docks, all right. You get
down and walk straight out. Shoot you through boat knees.
Chester was asleep with the doc. Let me take a
look at him. Seemed to me he had more trouble
breathing than before. But the doc said another day might
see him out of it, and there was nothing I

(19:42):
could do. So I went up for a stake and
some sleep, and the next morning I went back to
the jail more than Marshall. Everything all right, Shiloh, dock
looked over your prisoners, Trevit's pretty sick yet, but Stowboll's
all right.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
I've got a few burns, is all.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Nothing could hurt that A hanging night, sure, But what
if Chester pulls through? You can't holdst that muscle. I
don't like the sound of your voice, Trevit can't be quiet.
Oh worry not.

Speaker 6 (20:14):
You to.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
Shut the door, Charlott, I don't even want to look
at him. That nobo' is a mean one.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
But I feel kind of sorry for Trevor.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
And go cry about it someplace else. I don't feel sorry.
Don't you take it out on me, Marshall. I didn't
send Chester off to do my job. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
I'm I'm sorry. Go get some breakfast and I'll wait here. Now,

(20:48):
be back later. Oh my show, doc? Well, well what
is the doc coming? H jes uh. He's gonna be alright,

(21:11):
but you sure were.

Speaker 3 (21:15):
Of course my show.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
His breathing suddenly change the pressures off somewhere.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
It's Oh, he's gonna be fine. That's good, that's good.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Of course he'll be in some painful whine ye think
ye yeah yeah, uh, alright, Doc, I'll I'll come and
see him in a little quie. I'll tell him before
you emerge. Alright, come on, Trevin, wait to come on?

(21:49):
I said, what, marsh I'll be back for you, stubble.
I'll get going.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
Don't you can't do anything?

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Shut up, treve At Your horse is down at the National.
Go get on it. Turn me loose, get your horse
and riding. Don't ever come.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Back to Dodge.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
Not while I'm alive. Now go on before I change
my mind.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Yeah, yeah, sure, shure your next Stobull?

Speaker 2 (22:34):
What you do with Trevitt? Put the knife in him?
I turned him loose. Now come on, get out of
that cell. Am I free too? You will be in
a little while. Sell the doc. Marshall.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
Chester's hey, Yeah, where are you going with Stobull?

Speaker 2 (22:48):
I'm gonna shoot me in the bag. Probably that ride, Marshall.
I'm gonna do what I should have done three days
ago when I sent Chester after you bring him outside,
Shiloh sco slow and easy, bring him over here. Shadow,

(23:15):
You're gonna drag me? Is that it? You try that?
That's what you do, isn't it? Don't try? Never mind?
Shot o?

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Oh my damns?

Speaker 4 (23:30):
Here what oh?

Speaker 2 (23:33):
I get it. You're gonna fight me. I'm Marshall. You're crazy.
Your night's are I'll tear your throat out if he wins.
Let him go? Shadow, Maybe I will, I said, You'll
let him go? All right, Marshall? All right, maybe you
are crazy, but I guess this is your party. Come on, Marshall.

Speaker 7 (23:55):

Speaker 2 (24:46):
You don't look too good. More so, I've better get
that dog. He's hurt, but he isn't dead. If they
can't ride, throw him on the stage. We get him
out of here. I see him again, I'll shoot him. Uh, Chester, cat,

(25:16):

Those two sort of got the drop on me. Yeah,
I sure didn't. But mister Dylon, Yeah, I've been thinking
and and.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
Yeah what is it? Chester?

Speaker 3 (25:53):
