I start asking people Chester, try the saloons in the start,
maybe the depot.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I'll go right now, but I don't know. I do
declare if that wouldn't, what's the matter?

Speaker 2 (01:54):

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Well, next time weave word.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Doc, I will, I surely will. If I can, well, sure.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Would save us a lot of threaten in general.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Upset a minute, What do you mean, Doc, if you can?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Is that if they left me in I leave word.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Come on inside. I don't want to tell us about it.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
I can tell you part of it, the least important part.
I made a promise about the rest.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
You know how it is, man Ah, But tell us.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Well, the other night, let me see. It was Wednesday,
A couple of riders tramped right into my office. They
said a man was hurt bad somewhere I passed four
dodge the Naturally, I went along with him.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Well, why didn't you leave a note?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
And faith?

Speaker 3 (03:19):
So they didn't tell me.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
Exactly where we were going, sister, but they sure told
me not to leave any note.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
They told you, what will you let him talk? Justin?

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Of course I figured that it must have been a shooting.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
But my job to take care of everybody sinner and
saved a like.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
And so we finally got to this place the next day, Doc,
That's part of what I promised not to tell Chester.
There was a young man there who had got himself
shot in the back. The bullet laud's right in his spine.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I dug it out and.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Did all I could for him, and then I.

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Just sat there for quite a spell.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
And I put my things away and walked out into
the other room.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
Well, that is.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
He's dead.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
The shock of extracting that bullet was too much for him.
Bad place to spind You.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Killed him, man, No, No, I didn't kill He's dead,
ain't he look?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Mister?

Speaker 4 (04:27):
That boy wouldn't have lived more in a couple of days. Anyway,
that bullet where it was, whoever put it there, murdered him.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
You want me to shout him up?

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Not yet? God tell me something.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
You know that boy in her? I do. And the
three of us here, you know any of us.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Him?

Speaker 4 (04:46):
I've seen him around somewhere, Dodge.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
I guess it's saddles it. He ain't walking out.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
You know his name?

Speaker 5 (04:53):
That?

Speaker 4 (04:55):
No, I don't might come to me.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
Oh, let me think you don't seem down stand.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
He wants to kill you already.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Now you're trying to remember his name it's just gonna
make it work.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
They can't kill a doctor for following his old I
shot that boy when he tried to get away, and
I can shoot you just tis he's done by a fool.
I'm a doctor, and since there's nothing more I can
do here, I've got to be available to other patients.
I've been a wait too long as it is.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
What are we arguing about?

Speaker 3 (05:19):
As sooner we shoot him, the better, Well tell him, man,
are you anyway?

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Don't you know I'm the only doctor within one hundred
miles of Dodge right now? That's one too many.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Now, wait a minute, I'm kind of thinking the Doc's right.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
He ain't like an ordinary man.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
The doctor, well, it's almost like he.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Ain't quite human some men.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
He's human enough to tell what he knows to that hardhead.
Marshal had gotten Dodge, and we'll have him on our table.
We'll never get our twenty thousand. The way I figure
it's us to the doc.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
I'm not interested in what you figure, mister, And I'd
lived too long.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
To be afraid of dying.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
But right this minute, and maybe several folk needing me real.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Bad, you know he's right.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
We can't kill it well I can, and you'll do
what I say here, Doc, lessen to me.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
If I let you go.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Well, you promise not to tell about anybody you recognized here?

Speaker 2 (06:10):
And if I don't and doctor know, doctor, I'll kill
you myself.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Well, yes, I suppose you would.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
All right, I'm here as the doctor and nothing else.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
I promise word of honor.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Do my word of honor.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
Okay, get out one other thing, Doc, what you break
your word?

Speaker 4 (06:37):
You tell anybody where this place is or who you
saw here, and we'll get to you.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
We'll kill you no matter where you try to. I
gave you my word tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah you did.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
I just don't forget what I said.

Speaker 5 (06:49):
We will kill you.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
We'll die trying. Oh that's quite a story, Doc, And.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
You played it right smart. If you asked me who
was the doc, I say, who was they?

Speaker 4 (07:07):
I only recognized one of them Chester, besides the man
they'd shot.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah, that's what you said. But have you thought of
his name? You don't understand I gave my word.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
I wouldn't tell him.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah, but they're just a bunch of killers.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
Man. Wouldn't you have done the same if you were
in my boots?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
It would be a hard choice document.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Yeah, I suppose I wouldn't any man who at least by.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Is any amount of honor. Yeah, because I wasn't really
thinking about it that way. I'm gonna get to sleep, Matt.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, that.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Was a good boy they murdered.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
I hope they hang for it. How we were gonna
find mister Jong?

Speaker 2 (07:56):
I don't know Chester, We don't even know who they killed.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Marshall.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Wow, Jake Worth, why you haven't come to Dodge.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
In six months?

Speaker 5 (08:42):
I'm at nore now, Marshall.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Oh there's the trouble, Jake.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
I call it that.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Wow. You know that Cottonwood had big one right down
to Brandy Bendia a hole.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
Down by the roots, the north side of it.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
I put a sack in that hole this morning, Marshall,
with twenty five dollars in twenty that's a lot of money.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
Jake, even for you know it ain't it.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Hank gets back, all right, Hank gets back, and that's
ransom money. Your boy's been kidnapped.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
Didn't show up the other night, Marshall.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Next morning I found a note tacked on the corral
said leave the money or else said kid. Oh, come on, Jake,
we'll try to get there before they pick up the money.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
No, no, Marshall, I won't take any chances they shoot
him short.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
If we did that, Jake, if they killed Hank, it'd
want him hung, wouldn't you hanging myself?

Speaker 1 (09:29):
If it comes to that A hunting dollars?

Speaker 2 (09:31):
All right, then let's go. Let's get down the brandy
ben and wait.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
For No, Marshall, I already told you dead, Jake.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
What They already shot him? He's dead?

Speaker 4 (09:43):
What are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Where is he?

Speaker 5 (09:49):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
How come you know he's dead.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
I can't tell you, marshoot, oh much.

Speaker 5 (10:00):
I had about enough. But we're wasting time here, and
I'll come on, Jake. I'll tell you what I can
on the way to the river.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Better by heaven, and one of us are never going
to get to the river. Jake Worth was known as
a hard, hot tempered man, but he was straight as
they come, and all he wanted out of life was
his ranch and his three sons to work it with him.
It was hard to tell him, but what I'll mentioning
Darcy said what I could. And when we reached the

(10:28):
Ark Kansas, we hid our horses in the clump of
bush and worked their way on foot up to the
big cottonwood, and then we saw it.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
They'd do it. I gave him the money.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
What I'm sorry, ge the musha.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
How shall I been kind of confused by all this?
I swallowed your story on the way down here. Now
I want the truth.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
I won't ever been. I told you I don't know
who they are.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
I know a lot. You ain't killing me.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
What's going on with you?

Speaker 5 (11:18):
And I told you all I can.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Marshall, is my boy laying here?

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Make it easy now, Jake, who are you tall?

Speaker 5 (11:24):
I don't know anything. Jake, the man who told me
about it.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
I had to promise not to name any.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Man who is I'm getting out of him if I
could cut it.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Out, I know, I know.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
That's why I can't tell you who he is.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I'll give you twenty four hours.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
To name those men.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
After that, me and my sons are coming to Dodger
and they'll be bluffs.

Speaker 5 (11:46):
Bill, I get him my word. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
I don't believe you.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
Come on, I'll help you take your boy home. Yeah,
on back to Dodge. I'll manage you.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
If you're making a bad mistake.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Jack, If you've got twenty four hours, Marshall.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
All right, man, I'll do whatever I can.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
It might not work dark, and you'll be exposing yourself
to a lot of danger.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
Have you thought about that.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
I haven't.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
I've also been thinking about the men who killed young
Hank Worth.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
We could wait till they start spending their money, or
one of them gets drunk and maybe talks too much.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Somewhere I could meantime you're in the work, who have
a gunfight?

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Man?

Speaker 5 (12:53):
All rights in, Doc, let's go.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
When I got out of the rash before dark. Come on,
I don't see anybody around.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
Maybe they hit out.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
Fine off Marshall. Just watch him, boys, if he makes
a move, your shoot, Jake.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
I came here to stop at shooting, not to start.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
You can stop at Marshall.

Speaker 5 (13:36):
Just tell me who killed my son. If I know,
I'd be on his trail, Jake, what's.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Doc doing here?

Speaker 3 (13:44):
You'll tell him, doctor, Jake, I took the bullet out
of Hank.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
He died soon after.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
That's right, I'll come down here where we talk like friends.
I'll explain it to you. Say where you are? Boys?
All right, Doc, let's hear it.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Well, they got me out of bed, jacob led me
out in the country. Hank had been shot in the back,
and I extracted.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
The bullet, but there's no use.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
He'd have died anyway. There were three men then, and
I recognized one who was he. I had to promise
I wouldn't tell her they killed That don't matter.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
No, wait a minute, let's think about it, Chack. Doc
gave him his word, and you're asking him to break it.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
What do you think about it for him?

Speaker 2 (14:40):
I'm thinking, I'm thinking about my boy too.

Speaker 5 (14:43):
You want to help get the man.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Who did a check?

Speaker 5 (14:45):
Don't ask?

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Will you listen to me? Those men told Doc if
he talked, they'd kill her, and they met it too.
I've got an idea, Jake, and I want you to
hear me out. Will you look, will spread it around
that Doc has identified the killer, and go on and
we'll just wait. See one or two, or maybe all
three of them will come at the dodge to kill
Doc some nice away. I'll deputize you and your boys

(15:07):
right now and you can wait for him with us.
But you're gonna have to stay hidden like me, and
Doc would rather make himself a target for them killers
and break his word to him. Yeah, Jake, that's right,
I'll look Doc, and I'll go back to dodge. Now
I'll see that the story gets started, and that they

(15:28):
are to You and your boys can ride in, but separately,
though otherwise it might cause talking. I understand, and you
come straight to the docks.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
We'll be there, don't you worry.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
For the next few days, Doc never left his office.
The rest of us sent around in his back room
and waited. Chester kept us supplied with food and coffee.
That we began to get pretty restless, cooped up like that.
We were being real careful with one another and over polite.

(16:06):
But on the sixth night, about midnight, we got our game.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
I think he's saying, you just go up down the street.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Three of them.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
They're tying up outside right now.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
All right, come on out here, will you.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
What do you want me to do?

Speaker 5 (16:23):
Man, you'll take cover in here and.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Stay out of side.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Let's go on downstairs and meet him more.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
No, No, we're just scattering that way now. Listen. One
not will probably stand guard on the street while the
other two come up here to get Doc Chester. You
and the two boys got on the back way and
Jake and I'll wait here. But don't jump that man
until we go into action up here. You understand Chester,
all right? Then move fast? Come on Jack, No what

(16:48):
we just wait here in the dark.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Good.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Here fixed Doc's blanket on the concher, so we think
he's under Okay, just get back in the corner. Jaco
will be shooting each other. Be quiet, don't start shooting
until I do.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Doctor, wake up your lye him go. Let's just shoot
him and get out of here.

Speaker 5 (17:30):
Wait here, get your hand, Jake.

Speaker 4 (17:43):
You all right, Jake, I've got warm my arm.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Gosh, Doc, come on up.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
They're dead by telling him, what are you?

Speaker 4 (17:55):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (18:02):
All right, it's the only my ancester we got. The
one in the street. He tried to get away when
he heard the shooting up here, but he ran smack
into one of the work boys.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
He's dangerous.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Well, Doc, he can tell us now there's one of
these the man you recognize, Yes, this one here? Yeah, well, Jake,
I guess I said.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
Marshal.

Speaker 5 (18:38):
What I doubted you?

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Marshall.

Speaker 4 (18:44):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Forgot it, Jake. No, it's best to remember. Man shouldn't
make mistakes length. There was no harm done the way
it worked done.

Speaker 4 (18:58):
Yeah, I'll buy you a drink before we leave.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Marsh I think I kind of like that, Jaye.
