(00:00):
Do new machines pay out moremoney to attract more players?
We dig into this question and moregaming myths coming right up first.
Here's what's happening thisweek at Hollywood Casino Bangor.
Welcome to Light Slots Action.
My name is Alton.
I am director of marketing hereat Hollywood Casino Bangor.
And welcome.
I'm Mark General Managerat Hollywood Casino.
Bangor, welcome to Light Slots Action.

(00:22):
Awesome.
Hey Mark.
So, you know, we kinda led with somegaming myths, like, you know, uh.
Do new machines pay out more moneythan I get that question a lot and you
see it a lot that, you know, sometimesyou see new casinos, new slots, and
it's like all that pay out more.
Unfortunately they don't, um,you know, how it works with slot
machines is, it's totally random.

(00:44):
You know, a lot of people I'veheard in my, in my past as well is.
Oh my goodness, this machine justpaid out a jackpot or a large payouts.
It is gonna be cold for a while.
Well, not really.
True.
It could hit twice in a rowback to back, right, Elton?
Absolutely.
Exactly.
It's, it's all about therandom number generators.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So there truly is contrary to popularbelief, no actual, uh, my favorite

(01:08):
one that I hear is the jackpot switch.
You guys have a jack.
Pot switch out back that you just turn on.
You turn it on when things areslow to get people excited.
That is not true.
If we had that ability, uh, we,we, that would be quite something.
Yeah.
Uh, yeah.
I don't think regulators wouldreally appreciate that very much.
And a heavily regulated industry,uh, that may run us a foul.

(01:31):
So I can, I can pretty confidently say,and I'm sure you can as well, mark.
Yeah.
Between the two of us, we'veprobably covered every inch
of our building at some point.
Yes, we have.
For sure we have, and I'venever seen such switch, so No.
That I've still yet to be found.
Um, and you know, there, there'salways a thing about, you know,
do casinos manipulate machines?
And do we get in?

(01:51):
It's absolutely not.
Again, you know, Elton, you broughtup a great point about regulators.
We're in a very regulated environment,so every time before machine gets
authorized to be used on the floor.
All the settings need to be approved.
Uh, the, the payout parameters ofthe machine needs to be approved.
So there's a lot of processthat goes into that.
Exactly.
Yeah.
It, it's just, it's one of those thingswhere, where, you know, we have inspectors

(02:14):
coming in, they're making sure everythingis, is up to snuff, so to speak.
And, you know, there, there's,there's no control over.
And, and you mentioned it earlier, mark, you know, just 'cause
a machine hits doesn't meanit's not gonna hit right away.
Right.
And just because a machinehasn't hit in a while.
Good point.
It, it may not hit for yet another while.
That's, I mean, that's, that's anotherone I hear all the time is, oh man,
that machine's, it's been cold.

(02:35):
It's ready to hit.
Yeah, it's ready to hit.
I mean, if only it were that simple.
If only were that simple.
Indeed.
So, you know, one of the things yousee, especially on the slot side of
things with newer games, you know,if you look at the older games.
They're very one dimensional in thesense that they're real machines and
there's only certain ways to win.
The newer games, they're, they'reincredible different bonus rounds,

(02:56):
different levels, differentdifferent parameters based on
what your wager is as well.
Huge height too.
We have a lot of thesenew machines on the floor.
They're 13 feet, very tall.
They make you ow Ming look like a midget.
Uh, it, it is, or, you know, makehim look like a very small person.
And they're, they're quite impressiveand a little, yes, they are intimidating.
Yes, they are.
But, but a lot of fun.

(03:17):
And, you know, they're, they'rebecoming more immersive experiences
now, you know, as the world goes moretowards, uh, you know, AI and, and
virtual reality, things like that.
You know, gaming floors aresimilar just with the immersive
experience, um, uh, of these games.
You know, one of the other pointsthat we talk about, we've talked
a lot about slots, but Yeah, tablegames as well, and probably from

(03:38):
a myth perspective, roulette.
Yes.
That's what um, so whatare your thoughts on that?
I know I've been in casinos where,you know, a certain number hasn't
hit, or sometimes there's the hot.
Hot numbers and cold numbers.
How much influence does that really have?
Yeah, I'm gonna go with zero.
Uh, so I, I agree.
I, I, I think that's one of the things.
I have friends that are like, you know, oh, I've got a

(03:59):
system, I've got a system for.
Let, I've heard that too.
I, I, I'm sure you do, but Ipromise you it's probably not
doing anything, uh, because it is.
Random.
It definitely is.
I don't know how else to explain it.
It is completely random and youknow, again, it goes, it's right.
And you know, you spoke about systems.
There's a lot of peoplethat say they have system.

(04:21):
You know, again, going back tothe point that we said, there's
very strict parameters in whichwe need to set these games up.
You know, if you look atroulette, for example.
You know, the, also our manufacturers, not only are we regulated in regards
to what we put on the floor in thecasino, but the manufacturers that
produce the slot machines, the tables, particularly with roulette, they

(04:41):
are very highly scrutinized as well.
Absolutely.
You know, from your leveling to thesmoothness of the wheel, there's a
lot that goes on behind the scenesthat, um, you know, someone walking to
the casino doesn't necessarily know.
No, absolutely.
And, and, and it's so true.
And, and that's what.
Ensures that these, thesetruly are random outcomes.
I mean, because that's what'sthe fun of gambling is, right?

(05:02):
Exactly.
I mean, if there were secret tricks to allof this, well, we'd have a whole lot more
casino millionaires out there, I think.
Exactly.
And so, you know, the regulators andthe inspectors and the, and the folks
out there are, are out there, you know, working in partnership with us to make
sure that all of these machines are asrandom as possible so that, uh, it's

(05:24):
an enjoyable experience for everybody.
Definitely.
And you know, one of the mostcommon, uh, phrases that you
hear is loose slots, right?
Elton?
I've even seen billboards.
I was just not in Maine.
Of course.
I was literally just gonna say that.
Yes.
So if anyone's listening, that can impact that.
I would love to have abillboard in Bangor Main.
Uh, but no, seriously, I was just gonnasay that when I was out in Colorado
a few weeks ago, I saw a billboardthat said, we have the loosest.

(05:47):
Slots in town.
Right.
And I, it just made me shake myhead because unfortunately that type
of messaging does make people feellike that there's a control there.
And is there No, there is not.
There absolutely isn't.
And again, it, it depends on everyone.
What we don't want to do ismislead anybody, you know, it's.
That's why when people come and we'relike, wish you, we wish you good luck.

(06:08):
'cause that's exactly what it is.
And it's part of that, likeElton you mentioned earlier, it's
that excitement of the unknown.
Right, exactly.
Um, and again, it's, it's theall encompassing experience.
To expand a little bit on this, youknow, people come to the casino to
play, but at the end of the day, it's,it's such an immersive experience.
The, the sounds, the visuals, the people.

(06:29):
That's what makes it really fun.
So, um, and that's what we wanna do too,you know, if there's any quote unquote
fixing or rigging from the casino, whichI've heard my whole career, that would
defeat the purpose of the whole industry.
Right?
Exactly, exactly.
It's all about the atmosphere.
That's right.
It's all about the fun of being there.
You know, responsible gaming is just that.
It's fun and so.

(06:50):
You know, if there was an opportunityor a a, a likelihood of something being
read that takes all the fun out of,it's like nobody would wanna go there.
And again, that, that defeats the purpose.
The, the purpose is entertainmentand that's what we're here for.
Definitely.
And one of the other things that isinteresting to note for those listening
is on the table game side, um, is just thefrequency in which things are changed out.

(07:13):
You know, we change our cards out.
Daily, we have, you know, dice get changed out.
You know, for our craps everythingchanges, everything goes because,
again, strict parameters.
So again, you come in and you're holdinga, a deck of cards on a blackjack table.
Um, you know, there's again, so muchbehind the scenes as to how they're
stored, how they're brought in, howthey're monitored, how they're regulated.

(07:34):
So, um, again, an equal playing field.
We would never want anyone to come inand feel that they're on a different
playing field than everybody else.
It's equal to have a great time.
Exactly.
It's, yeah, exactly.
Now, I will say though, it, it is equalbased on a dollar to dollar exchange.
Right now, if you're comingin and you're, you're playing
a little bit more, of course.
Does that mean that you have a.Better chance to win a jackpot.

(07:59):
It does not.
So essentially, yeah, if you're comingin, um, and you have, uh, the pin play
card, which is part of our pin play appand our loyalty program, um, of course
the more you play depending on tablegames, you know, there, it's, it's, it's
an algorithm between how much you wager, how long you play versus slots a little
different with more on the wager side.

(08:21):
But at the end of the day, yes, you'll be able to get offers based
on the play, but the likelihood ofa jackpot hitting, unfortunately,
it's still the equal playing field.
Exactly.
Exactly.
And, and that's a commonmyth that we get too, right?
That's right.
So one of my other favorite common mythsthat I, I run into regularly is I win
less jackpots when I play with my card.

(08:42):
I've heard that as well, but again, not true.
That is we are, we're,we're busting all the myths.
So we are, we are probably just ruiningsome people's days right now, but, uh,
but I've heard that it's, you know, that there's, if you put the card in
that we're monitoring that, trust me,we're not, we, we we're, we don't have
that, that, that ability and nor wouldwe want to ever use anything like that.

(09:03):
Uh, again, when your cardis in the machine, all that
does, it tracks your play.
And then Exactly.
If you're playing more.
You might as well capitalize on it.
And that gives you an advantage tocapitalize on those, on those things.
But the actual gamemechanics is identical.
Exactly.
But again, have to plug this rightElton Play with your pan play card.

(09:23):
It's, it's definitelythe right way to do it.
Absolutely we do.
I mean, because, you know.
It's like a cash back card.
Right.
You're not gonna get mad at Capital One.
Right.
For not giving you cash backwhen you didn't use their card.
Exactly.
So it's no different here.
Right.
Use your pen play card so youcan get your rewards back.
That's right.
For playing at at the pen.
Entertainment property, definitely.

(09:43):
There's another myth floatingout there, mark, that casinos
know when a jackpot is gonna hit.
Yes.
Do our slot attendants walk aroundlike with some kind of, I mean,
they have that really cool Batmanlooking armband thing going on.
Yeah.
Is that like saying, Hey guys, thisjackpot's gonna hit in 10 minutes?
Well, again, I think if they had thatability, that would be quite something.

(10:04):
But uh, no, they definitely do notknow when the jackpot's gonna hit.
You know, we've, again, going back to apoint I think I mentioned earlier, is.
It was a, a few weeks ago wehad a machine that hit a jackpot
in, its in about 10 minutes.
It was a jackpot repeated itself, and trust me, the slaughter 10
was just as surprised as thecustomer and everybody else.
So it's, it's again,comp completely random.

(10:27):
Um, and you know, the other thing too is.
When, when we're looking at themachine, so when a jackpot is paid out,
obviously that get, that gets paid outand then the, the machine gets reset.
Yeah.
But once that machine gets reset,it is back to where it was.
Yeah.
And it's, it's incredible sometimesto see the reaction from people.
When they see a jackpot hitting inquick succession, I'm like, oh my

(10:50):
God, I didn't know this was possible.
Like, yes, completelyrandom number generator.
And that's what makes itinteresting and exciting.
Exactly That.
That's what means.
Everybody that walks inthe door has a chance.
Everybody has the samechance to win that jackpot.
Yes, they do.
There's no rigging, there's no jackpotswitches, there's no controlling it.
It is a hundred percent.

(11:11):
A random number generator.
Exactly.
And anything can happen.
And, and in fact, uh, I may, you mayrecall a few months ago, ironically,
we had our two largest jackpots, right?
Our largest slots jackpot, and our largest table.
Jackpot.
Yeah.
Hit within like a two week span.
That's a great point,Elton, back in April.

(11:32):
Exactly.
Um, uh, we had, we had our newdirector of hospitality start and
they both hit and we were like, oh,Dwayne brought up these jackpots.
He's, he's, he's a luckyinfluence on the casino.
Um, but yeah, exactly.
I mean, you know, you, you look atthat, it was, it was quite something.
But again, it just further reinforcesthe point of, of how random it is.
Um, you know, one other pointI just wanted to mention was.

(11:54):
You know, with the games themselves, when you go to them, there's a lot of
different ways to play the game too.
Yeah.
A lot of people look at, for example, apenny slot and they put in, you know, a
couple of dollars and then someone nextto 'em is continuously winning more.
Yep.
But one of the things to noteis, you know, there's various
different denominations and there'sdifferent combinations of wagers.

(12:14):
So you can bid a certain amountof lines with a certain bit.
Uh, bet max or minimum.
So definitely to understand how thegame works and what you could win
based on your wager, but just glancingover, it might give that impression
that a game's paying out more, but it's also obviously contingent
on how much is waged on the game.
Right, Elton?
Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.
And, and again, I mean, it,it's all random, so yeah.

(12:36):
I mean, some people have a little bit moreluck on a given day than other people.
That's just the nature of luck.
Exactly.
That's what makes it fun.
It is.
Awesome.
Well, it's been fun talking throughsome of these myths with you, mark.
Well, with that, we will leave you,but first, here's what's coming
up at Hollywood Casino this week.
