(00:01):
Welcome to the I Can.
He Can podcast the podcastfor literally anyone.
However, if you are a woman, you'reprobably the person listening on the
other side of that speaker right now.
I'm your host Sarai, And you'llpretty much get to know everything
about me, including the things thatmake me say I can't, but also the

(00:21):
things that remind me that he can.
So without further ado, let'sjump into today's episode.
I.
All right, you guys.
Welcome back to episode four.
and I am very, very excitedfor today's episode.
It's actually the start of a new seriesAnd while I am going to be discussing

(00:45):
other topics in different episodes, this series is only going to be about
worship worship songs, artists, andwe're gonna kind of break them down.
So there's just so, so much to talkabout, and I'm just, I'm super excited
and I couldn't have honestly even donethis without one of my friends, Hector.

(01:08):
he is also on the worship team of mychurch, so I'm very grateful he actually
gave me this idea because there reallyis just so much to unpack here and.
The first person that we're goingto be discussing today is an
artist by the name of Brandon Lake.
However, every time I do one of theseepisodes, I do tend to go down a

(01:30):
little bit of a research rabbit hole.
Um, but I'm not sure if you guys knewthat in the Renaissance period there
was such a thing as the divisionof secular music and sacred music.
So secular music, meaning music of genresthat are not religious in nature Now.
It's interesting to me becausein today's world, we're seeing

(01:53):
more than ever, honestly thetremendous growth of worship music.
I'm not mad about that.
I'm really not mad about that.
'cause worship music isjust, it's fantastic.
but secular music really is justkind of not what it used to be.
Now when I think of music ingeneral, or music that we grew up

(02:15):
with, it mostly brings up memories.
Moments in time, if you will.
So I'm a nineties kid and I think aboutthe last bit of good secular music
that there was, and that's really inthe nineties when I was growing up.
But when I think of that musicit reminds me of my childhood,

(02:37):
not how it made me feel.
It didn't change me in any way.
Even till this day.
I can listen to the Spice Girls.
Backstreet Boys, Selena Nirvana.
I could keep going honestly, but noneof those artists ever changed me.
Yeah, it made me happy.
You can't really take out the joyfrom listening to those songs that

(03:00):
bring back good times, good memories, but those were in fact the good days.
And that's all it does for me now.
It's all that it did for me then.
but there's nothing like whatworship music does to your heart.
It really isn't.
So worship music was made to praisethe highest of highs, God, the Father.

(03:22):
Now before I jump into the goodstuff, into the series of worship, I
do wanna point out something that Ilearned, um, in my research in this
episode, and that is that even Jesussing and praise, I'm not going to
read all of those chapters, in full.
It is quite a lot to go throughand to cover in one day, but.

(03:44):
If you are curious, just like I was, youcan definitely see how Jesus, our Lord
and Savior worship God through musicand some of these chapters in the Bible.
Anyway, I will note these scripturesin the note section for you guys.
And they are Matthew 26 30, mark1426, Hebrews two 12, Romans 15, nine.

(04:11):
Um, and if I'm being honest, the more thatI do these episodes or these podcasts.
The more I learned of the humilitythat Jesus had and the humility that he
showed everyone He, I mean, he would saytruly, I say to you, but I mean, I don't
feel worthy of like saying that myself.
Um, so anyway, I'm gonna scratchwhat I was gonna say there.

(04:34):
But he was truly not ashamedto stand with his brothers and
sisters in Christ and worship God.
There was no shame.
Absolutely none.
And.
I know some people who, you know, they'redifferent kind of worshipers as they say.
Like you see different kindof people, in church and, you
know, they stand differently.
Some, just have no shame and they'rejust going all out, which is amazing.

(04:58):
I love to see that.
But, Jesus had no shame and hepraised God with everyone, and
that's just so beautiful to see.
but now to get to the crux of itall, worship music, the famous.
Singer that we're going to betalking about is Brandon Lake.
you guys have heard of BrandonLake, there's probably not a

(05:19):
song that he is not involved in.
Like he, he is just amazing.
but there are so, so many differentartists today that I just wanted
to kind of briefly shout out andtouch on its Elevation Worship.
I know they are also way up there.
Elevation Worship Hillsong,United Maverick City, CC Winans.

(05:41):
Ugh.
Love her.
Phil Wickham.
Cody Kass, Fort Frank.
He just had a concert.
Danny Gokey, torn Wells.
Ryley.
Morillo.
I am just, I love her.
Love, love, love her.
Uh, Saray Rivera and, uh, Chand Mooreand Naomi Rain are a part of Maverick
City, but they are also getting a bitmore famous, as well on their own.

(06:03):
And, Chris Brown.
Also sings with Elevation.
now, sometimes with Maverick, but notChris Brown, the one that you guys know.
Anyway, going back to Brandon, he'sjust, man, like, there's not a song, a
lyric or a word that he sings that won'tmake your heart feel some kind of way.

(06:25):
And yes, like I said before, secularmusic can pull at your heartstrings,
but when music is centered in Christ.
And is embellished with the words of thegospel and is used to cry out to God.
It just, it does something to your spirit.
It really does.
I'm, I'm telling you, it is powerful.

(06:47):
Goosebumps don't mean anything.
Goosebumps is just something thathappened to you in the nineties when
you heard the new Backstreet Boys song.
Um, I mean, at least forme, that's what happened.
But anyway, out of all thesongs that Brandon Lake.
Has written and sang.
There was one that hereleased earlier this year.

(07:07):
It's called Daddy's, DNA.
And at first glance, the songseems like it's about his father,
but in reality he is talking abouthis Heavenly Father about God.
And I wanted to play a clip, but becauseI am on various, podcasts like Apple,
Spotify, I don't wanna trigger anything.
Uh, by playing other people's music.

(07:29):
So I, I don't want that.
So I'm just gonna read some of thelyrics because I do want to say those
words and have you hear those words.
so without further ado, here's just afew verses and choruses from daddy's DNA.
It says, I thought the world hadsomething special I was missing.
My daddy told me not to chase it.

(07:50):
I didn't listen.
Fell downhill a mile aminute before I knew it.
I was living in a pigsty along, long way from home.
Now, honestly, when I heard that, and he's saying that I was living
in a pigsty a long, long way fromhome, what a deep way to explain

(08:10):
the mess that you made of your life.
that's powerful.
And especially when you hear itcoming from his mouth, with his voice.
It's just, it's very, it's deep.
Now the chorus says, I went runninglike a rebel, racked up debts.
I couldn't pay.
I went dancing with the devilwith one foot in the grave.

(08:31):
How the heaven did I get here?
Notice he didn't say hell.
How the heaven did I get here when?
And through it all away?
All I've given you was trouble.
All you've given me was grace,
man.
Just even saying it, Ijust kind of get chills.
Now verse two says, and the freedomI was chasing felt like prison.

(08:56):
Lord, I've done so manythings, wish I didn't.
And after all the risky business, could I ever be forgiven?
I'm afraid to even ask to come back home.
You guys, when I heard that sentencethe first time, it, it just.
Punched me in the gut.

(09:17):
It just punched me in the gutbecause when I first started walking
with Jesus, it was so hard torepent and to ask for forgiveness.
'cause the things that I've donewere just so dark and so, uh, just
so horrible that how could you asksomeone to forgive those things?

(09:40):
And he said that.
And After all the risky business, could I ever be forgiven?
I'm afraid to even ask to come back home.
But you know what?
God does forgive.
God does forgive, and he loves you,and he accepts you, and he will
take you back home because as theysay, Jesus left the 99 for the one.

(10:03):
So as long as that one repents andtruly, truly just seeks forgiveness.
You will be able to go back home, there's no doubt about that.
Now I'm gonna skip a few verses and chorusand jump to the very end of the song.
This section right here reallyshowed me where he was tying in

(10:27):
the words of the song to the Bible.
And I'll tell you guys about itafter as soon as I'm done reading it.
This last verse goes, therewas something in the marrow.
Always coursing through myveins, but buried deeper than
the rubble is my daddy's DNA.
Now listen.
Listen you guys, those lastwords, but buried deeper than

(10:52):
the rubble is my daddy's DNA.
Those last words, man, it's areminder to us that despite all.
The things that we do.
All the things that we carry, theburdens of our past, the problems.
This is a reminder.
We are made of him.

(11:14):
We are made of Christ of God in his image.
And as the Bible says, we are made inhis image and there is some of him in us.
It doesn't matter what way we lookat it, there is some of him in us.
Now you all know that I like to throwin my scriptures here as well, so I

(11:34):
couldn't leave it out of this episode.
Genesis 1 27 specifically says, soGod created man in his own image,
in the image of God, he created him, male and female, he created them.
Now, that's in the very beginningof the Bible, but just like it
says there in Brandon's song.

(11:55):
Buried deeper than therubble is my daddy's DNA.
And surely you find it therein the beginning of the Bible.
Now also in Colossians one 15, it says, the sun is the image of the invisible
God, the firstborn, overall creation.
And time and time again, we are constantlyreminded that we are made in his image.

(12:17):
So don't let the things of your past.
Don't let those things keepyou buried in the rubble.
Don't let the weight of thosethings keep you from being
reminded that God is in you.
That good is also in you.
Pray on it.
If you're not sure, and if you don't knowhow to pray, it shouldn't be a problem.

(12:41):
the Bible says in Psalm1 0 5, 2, sing to him.
Sing praise to him, tellof all his wonderful acts.
You don't have to say with your wordsall the things that you wanna say.
And in all honesty, God alreadyknows what you wanna say to him.
He knows you before you were born, so healready knows what you're going through.

(13:07):
But the act of you talking to him andpraying to him is your show of wanting
to build that relationship with him.
So if you don't know the words, just find a worship song.
Find a worship song and sing to him.
Praise it to him because that is a waythat you are going to show a wonderful act

(13:27):
in building your relationship with him.
Psalm 95, 1 says.
Come let us sing for joy to the Lord.
Let us shout aloud to the rock of oursalvation and he truly is the rock.
He is the one thatcontinuously shows up for us.

(13:48):
Time and time again, whetheryou're a believer in God or
you're not, he is always there.
And for those people that don't believein God or have doubts in God, when you
say, oh, I have a gut feeling about this.
I have a gut feeling about that.
That's God, that's the Holy Spirit.
That is your discernment, kickingin and warning you, making

(14:12):
sure that you don't go astray.
Making sure that you don't do the wrongthing or hang around the wrong person.
Discernment is of Godand of the Holy Spirit.
So you need to pay attention to all ofthese things 'cause he is always with you.
He is the rock of our salvation.

(14:34):
Now you can listen to somegreat music and just sing along.
That's really all it takes.
You know, it's, it's not very complicated.
That's all it took for meto open up my heart really.
And one day I'll share my testimony withyou guys and we'll go down that road.
It's a very emotional, verydark kind of road in the middle,

(14:58):
but there was light at the end.
And there's light at the endbecause there's Jesus, and there's
a lot for me to say about that.
But use music to draw closer to God.
Use music in the way thatit was intended to be used.
Worship will connect you inways that you won't ever expect.
Never.

(15:19):
You can't imagine what itwill do for your heart.
I hope this has blessed you.
Please be sure to return since Iwill definitely, definitely need to
make this a series because there'sjust so much more to talk about.
So many more artists, musicians, so many songs.

(15:39):
There's just too much greatness, honestly, that we need to
uncover with worship music.
So I thank you guys for listening.
Till next time my friends.
