Brittany Turley (00:01):
Hey mama, welcome to the inside out mama's
podcast.
I'm Brittany Turley, mom of six,and I know what it's like to
feel stuck and overwhelmedtrying to be the perfect mom.
But everything changed for mewhen I learned that small
changes on the inside can bringbig results on the outside.
Each week, I will share simpleyet powerful inside shifts or

(00:25):
outside tips that can transformyour approach to mothering,
helping you thrive from theinside out.
Ready to ditch the mom guilt andenjoy this season of life?
You're in the right place.
Maybe you can relate to this.
I remember after having my firstbaby being very overwhelmed at

(00:49):
how I was going to do thehousework with a baby.
I remember I even had a friendwho had a baby around the same
time and talking with her andthinking, Maybe we should watch
each other's babies so we canget the housework done.
And looking back at that now, itjust seems silly that I was so
worried about two grown adultsand an infant, how messy can

(01:11):
that really be?
Versus now, we've got eightpeople, all able to move
themselves and things anywhere.
But I was very overwhelmed withhow I was going to manage this.
And I don't remember how, but weboth found a way to get things
done without ever tradingbabysitting.
But I do remember that it took alot of my brain space and energy

(01:36):
thinking through how to get thatdone and How to manage it with a
baby.
As our family grew I had tocontinue to change the way I
accomplished the household workAnd what I discovered is that
the more I systematized thingsthe easier It was.
I think this grew out of theexample from my mom.

(01:58):
Growing up, we had laundry dayevery Monday.
Monday was the day that my momwashed clothes.
It was actually really nice tohave a laundry day because we
could plan on it.
We would plan our outfits aroundit, never had to wonder when
things were going to get washed.
We just knew if our clothes werein the laundry basket on Monday

(02:20):
that they would get washed andwe could plan out our outfits
for the week.
Just having one day when you dolaundry creates a lot of freedom
for your brain.
Not having to decide each day ifyou need to wash or not or when
you should wash.
It's already been decided.

(02:40):
This morphed into me creating asystem for all the housework.
I decided that most householdthings can be done on a weekly
basis.
So, I vacuum, and sometimesdust, once a week.
I mop once a week.
I grocery shop once a week.
I clean the bathrooms once aweek, and so on.

(03:01):
Obviously, there are some thingsthat need to be done daily.
Like, in the kitchen, ourkitchen floor gets so dirty, it
has to be vacuumed daily, butI'm talking about the bigger
household things for this idea.
There are many reasons why Ilove having a household system.

(03:22):
One of them is I'm able to planmy days better.
I already know what I need to dofor the house each day, and so I
can plan and schedule otherthings around that.
For example, my wash day isWednesday and so I know I don't
plan a lot of appointments orthings on that day Because I'm

(03:43):
going to wash that day unlesssomething big comes up and I
just decide I'm gonna move mywash day to a different Day, but
I rarely do that.
I also love that it puts thework into smaller, easier to
accomplish chunks, especiallywhen you're trying to accomplish
things with little kids.
You know, if I know that todayis bathroom day, All I need to

(04:05):
do is spend, 20 minutes or lesscleaning the bathrooms.
That's really doable, ratherthan, oh, the whole house needs
to be cleaned today and tryingto carve out the time with kids
to get that all accomplished.
I also love that it makes myhouse feel cleaner because
instead of the work piling upand it getting dirtier, dirtier,

(04:27):
dirtier, dirtier.
Every day, something is beingcleaned or accomplished, so the
house just feels more clean andorganized overall.
But the reason I love having asystem the most, is because I
don't have to wonder when I needto do things.
I don't have to spend timethinking about when I'm going to
do things and how to get themdone.

(04:48):
I just know.
And that frees up so much brainspace and energy and time
really, because I already knowwhat I need to do each day.
And I even kind of systematizedwhen I would do it, especially
when my kids were a lot younger.
I would get the older ones offto school and then that time

(05:10):
right there is when my youngerkids usually were better at
playing either with themselvesor with each other.
And so I'd let them go play andI'd just quickly get my task
done for that day.
Or they were more willing to bein the grocery cart to do the
grocery shopping or things likethat.
So I would just generally getmine done first thing in the

(05:30):
morning.
And, then I was done for theday, and I didn't have to worry
about it.
The rest of the day was free todo the other things I knew I
needed to do, or do some funthings with the kids.
So, I love how much, Extramental capacity.
It gives me systematizing thesehousehold things that I know

(05:53):
need to be done on a regularbasis, and now I don't have to
figure out when or how.
It's just part of my routine.
Now, because I believe smallchanges on the inside bring big
results on the outside, eachweek I'm going to give you a
small changes challenge.
Something small you could dothroughout the week if you
choose that could end upbringing a big result in your

(06:15):
life.
So the small changes challengefor this week is to systematize
one household task.
Pick one thing whether it'slaundry or maybe vacuuming or
whatever.
Maybe pick the one that is themost challenging for you and
figure out a way to systematizeit.

(06:36):
Decide how often you want to doit and maybe even pick the time
of day you want to get it doneand make a plan for it.
I totally love the weekly systembecause it's just simple and I
don't have to wonder, you Wait,is it the right week or not?
But pick a time that makes sensefor you and your family and
systematize one household taskand then watch and see how much

(07:02):
that frees up mental space foryou.
Then when you're ready if thatsystem worked good for you
systematize more tasks.
If you're interested, I createda simple PDF of my weekly
system.
