Speaker (00:00):
Hey mama.
(00:03):
Welcome to the Inside Out Mamaspodcast.
I'm Brittany Turley, mom of six,and I know what it's like to
feel stuck and overwhelmedtrying to be the perfect mom,
but everything changed for mewhen I learned that small
changes on the inside can bringbig results on the outside.
Each week I will share simple, yet powerful inside shifts or
(00:25):
outside tips that can transformyour approach to mothering,
helping you thrive from theinside out.
Ready to ditch the mom guilt andenjoy this season of life.
You are in the right place.
Brittany (00:41):
I am back, and as you
can tell, we've had another bout
of sickness here at our houseand last week my voice sounded
too terrible to even try torecord anything for the entire
week.
I know I don't sound great now,so I'll try and keep this one
shorter.
But let me give a a hypotheticalexample to start us off, let's
(01:09):
say.
That your family has been sickfor months on end and never have
you had a break from thesickness, and you are just
finishing up being sick, starting to finally feel better,
and all of your kids startfeeling ill again.
(01:31):
Many of them have come to youthroughout the day and said, my
throat hurts, or my nose isgetting stuffy, or I don't feel
good.
So you decide that everyone isgoing to go to bed one hour
before their bedtime tonightbecause all of your other
attempts to get people to bed ontime are early, have not worked.
(01:53):
So we're gonna go for one hourand see if we can get everyone a
good night's sleep and finallybe over sickness and.
Getting them to bed an hourbefore bedtime.
Mostly works, except that threeof them come out multiple times
(02:17):
and two of'em you find playingaround in their room an hour and
a half after they weresupposedly going to bed.
And one of them ends up going tobed an hour after their bedtime
and you're really feelingfrustrated and your thoughts
(02:39):
might go to, my kids arefrustrating me.
So yes, this hypotheticalexample is what we experienced
here at our house, and I wasfeeling very frustrated.
On top of being still sick and alittle bit delusional myself, I
(02:59):
was quite frustrated.
I can't remember if I said outloud to my kids, you're
frustrating me, but I definitelythought it.
Now sentences like this, like mykids are frustrating me, or my
kids are making me so upset, orMy kids are making me lose my
(03:21):
temper.
Give our kids.
All of the power, and they'reactually false statements.
Our kids do not have the powerto do those things to us.
Now, when I first heard thisconcept, I was super skeptical.
(03:43):
I thought, um, yeah, they canfrustrate me.
They, they frustrate me often.
It's very easy actually.
But then the more I learnedabout it and the more thought I
put into it, my mind was blownbecause this is just kind of a
part of the way we.
We tend to speak, we give otherpeople the power for how we're
(04:05):
feeling, but the reality is, ismy kids were not the ones
frustrating me.
It was my thoughts about whatthey were doing that was
frustrating me.
We know this because my kidscould have done all the things
that they did, and if I wasnever the wiser of it.
(04:25):
I wouldn't have been frustrated.
They could have come out, theycould have gone back to bed.
They could have been playing intheir rooms, and if I had never
known about it.
I wouldn't have been frustratedat all, but because I knew about
it, then my brain starts havingthoughts, thoughts like, great,
(04:46):
now they will all be sick, or,my kids never do what I ask, or
Now we will never get better.
Those were some of the thoughtsthat I was definitely thinking.
And those are very frustratingthoughts.
Almost all of them have a neverin them or ever, when logically
(05:09):
I know it's not true.
If they do these things, maybethey will get sick and.
Maybe we won't ever get better, but probably not.
It's seeming like that right nowbecause we just haven't gotten
better and it's been over twomonths.
But I know that spring is comingand we haven't had a year yet
(05:31):
where we've been sick all yearand we have had some good sick
winter.
So I know that we will getbetter eventually.
So it was my thoughts that werecreating my feelings of
frustration.
Another mom could have been inthe same situation and not find
it frustrating at all.
In fact, they might find itcomical.
(05:54):
If I came into this situationand I was a mom, but those
weren't my kids, it probablywould've been a little bit
funny.
It probably wouldn't have been alittle bit like, wow, this is
entertaining.
Yeah, because they weren'thaving the thoughts of, great,
now we'll all be sick.
Now my kids, well, you know, will never get better.
(06:14):
And my kids are just never doingwhat I asked them to do.
Their thoughts were, well, thisis actually kind of funny.
So it's our own thoughts thatcause our feelings.
And while this can seem like alittle bit.
Hard at first for us to wrap ourminds around.
(06:37):
It's actually amazing newsbecause it means that our kids
do not have the power to make usfeel a certain way.
It means only we have that powerno matter what our kids are
doing.
We can choose which thoughtswe're having or we can at least
know it's not my kids.
It's my thoughts that arecausing me to feel this way.
(07:01):
Only we have the power to makeourselves feel a certain way.
Now because I believe smallchanges on the inside bring big
results on the outside.
Each week I'm going to give youa small change challenge,
something small you can dothroughout the week if you
choose, that could end upbringing big results to your
(07:21):
life.
So the small change challengefor this week is just awareness.
I want you to just notice.
Anytime that you are thinking orsaying things where you are
giving your power away to yourkids, because just becoming
aware of this opens up our mindsto taking back the power.
(07:47):
Remember, small changes on theinside, bring big results on the
outside.
