Brittany (00:00):
Hey mama.
(00:03):
Welcome to the Inside Out Mamaspodcast.
I'm Brittany Turley, mom of six,and I know what it's like to
feel stuck and overwhelmedtrying to be the perfect mom,
but everything changed for mewhen I learned that small
changes on the inside can bringbig results on the outside.
Each week I will share simple, yet powerful inside shifts or
(00:25):
outside tips that can transformyour approach to mothering,
helping you thrive from theinside out.
Ready to ditch the mom guilt andenjoy this season of life.
You are in the right place.
I don't know about you mamas, but here where I'm at, this is
the last week of school andsummer starts this Friday at
(00:50):
noon.
And so I'm thinking a lot aboutsummer and what do I want this
summer to look like.
And one thing that I know helpsis to prep my insides for summer
to get my feelings and mythoughts aligned with what I
really want this summer.
Now, to do that, the first thingwe need to know is what do we
(01:12):
want this summer?
Want is an interesting word as averb.
The word want means to desire orwish for something, but as a
noun.
The word want refers to the lackof something.
I think often when we arethinking about things we want,
(01:36):
we are using the noun form ofthe word want.
We are thinking of the thingsthat we don't have, we are
thinking in a space of lack.
But what if we could want from aplace of abundance, would that
change what we want?
(01:56):
Or would that change theoutcomes of our wants?
Would we actually get what wewanted if we were coming from a
place of abundance?
My mentor, Brooke Castillo saysMost of us have only allowed
ourselves to want from a placeof scarcity, so every time we've
wanted something or dreamedabout something, it's because we
(02:19):
feel a lack of it.
When we start dreaming about it,it actually causes us pain.
People stop dreaming becausethey don't want that contrast.
They don't want to think aboutwhat they want versus what they
have.
I just found that so interestingwhen I first heard that from
her, how true that really is.
(02:39):
We usually want from a place ofscarcity, so we don't really
want to want anything because itcauses a little bit of pain
because it's something we feelwe don't have, we don't want to
think about it because we don'thave it yet.
To help overcome this, my mentoruses an exercise where you write
(03:02):
down 25 things that you want.
However, there's a catch.
Every other thing on that listhas to be something that you
really want.
But you already have.
Have you ever thought about thethings you want and already
have?
(03:24):
It is an amazing exercise.
When I did this the first time,it was actually a little hard at
first to get my brain thinkingabout it in that way of wanting
something that I already hadn.
And so it was really hard tocome up with these things that I
wanted and already had.
(03:44):
But once I got started, it wasso fun to see all the things
that I have wanted or stillwant, but already do have.
Brooke says, most of us don'tspend time wanting what we have.
We don't think of wanting from aplace of abundance to want the
things you already have isdifferent than just being
(04:07):
grateful for those things.
It's a different kind of energyand that I have found to be so
true.
I do believe that gratitude hasamazing energy, and it's
something that I practice daily, but wanting from a place of
abundance, wanting what you.
Already have is even a differentenergy than being grateful.
(04:31):
And so what she has you do iscreate this list of things you
want, but already have.
And then things that you wantbut don't yet have.
And.
The idea is that you aresandwiching things that you want
but don't yet have with theenergy of things you want, but
already have.
(04:52):
And that way, as you're thinkingabout all of the things you
want, the ones you have when youdon't have, you're coming from a
place of abundance and it reallycreates a different energy in
your life and a different energyas you then create goals for
those wants or start workingtowards those wants.
The definition of want as averb, which is an action word,
(05:15):
is a desire or wish forsomething.
So if we are wanting from aplace of abundance, from a place
of a verb, then we need to betaking some action and have some
energy behind it if we'rewanting from a place of a noun.
Which refers to the lack ofsomething, then we're, we're not
(05:36):
doing anything.
It's just a thing.
It feels very strange the firsttime you start trying to do the
mental work to think of thingsyou want, but already have.
But as you get going, it becomesmore natural and you start
realizing all of the things thatyou want, but have.
(06:00):
Let me give you a few examplesfrom my first time with a list
like this to give you some ideasand get your ideas flowing.
One of the things I wanted andhave is to be married to my best
friend.
I knew whoever I wanted tomarry.
I wanted it to be somebody I wasgood friends with.
Another thing that I want andhave is I knew I wanted kids.
(06:24):
Another thing that I knew Iwanted that I have is a college
degree.
I knew I wanted to go tocollege.
I love learning, and I wanted toget a degree in elementary
education, and I did.
Now in between those things arethings that I.
(06:44):
Didn't yet have but wanted.
And it's so interesting to goback to this list now because
one of those things on that listwas to have a podcast.
I made this list I think twoyears ago, and it's so fun now
to go back and read it and seehow my wanting from a place of
(07:05):
abundance has created thesethings in my life along with my
action and my hard work.
Now because I believe smallchanges on the inside bring big
results on the outside.
Each week on my podcast, I'mgoing to give you a small change
challenge, something small thatyou could do throughout the week
(07:25):
if you choose, that could end upbringing big results to your
life.
So the small change challengefor this week is to make a list
of nine things you want thissummer.
Now they don't just have to bethings.
A lot of the ones I gave youwere things that you would
achieve or do or have.
(07:46):
But they can also be emotionsyou want to create or thoughts
you want to create or,relationships you want to
develop.
So as you're making your list ofnine things, the odd number,
things will be things you wantbut already have.
So number one will be somethingyou want, but you already have
(08:08):
the even number things will bethings that you want to create
or achieve this summer.
So number two will be somethingyou want and you have a desire
for, but it's not something thatyou have quite yet.
And doing it this way, startingwith.
Something you want but alreadyhave as number one.
And only putting nine creates asandwich for everything.
(08:30):
That means that the first thingon the list is something you
want and already have, and thebottom thing on the list is
something you want and everyalready have.
So you will end up with.
Five things you want and alreadyhave, and four things that you
want to create and achieve thissummer.
And from that energy that youhave of wanting what you already
(08:52):
have, you'll begin to create theenergy you need to achieve the
other wants that you don't yethave.
I went ahead and made a list formy summer this year, and just to
give you a few examples to helpyou get your list going.
Some things that you might wantbut already have could be to be
(09:15):
home with my kids this summer.
It could be to have an airconditioned home to escape to on
hot summer days.
It could be to have a sprinklerin your backyard for your kids
to run through when it's hot andthey're bored.
They can be big, they can besmall.
(09:37):
Creating this list helps prepareour minds for an amazing summer
because we will see theabundance of what we already
have, and that will give us theenergy and the drive to create
the things that we are wantingto this summer and make our
summers with our kids amazingthis year.
