Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hi, doctor Tina. How are you great? Nice to see you.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
I'm so happy to see you as well.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
So welcome to the third episode of Inventor Spotlight, brought
to you by the Inventor Smart Community, which you are
one of our premium members, so thank you for that.
And so you've been with the club for how long now.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
I think it's at least three months. Three months. That's amazing.
I love that.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
So I'm so happy to have you as a member
and that you're our feature today. So you're an inventor
like the rest of us. So I'm going to give
you a minute and just tell us about your invention
and what you've been working on and looking forward to
hearing about this sure sure.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Then mentioned name is Brush Refresher, just the title we
gave it because we means my husband and myself we're
coming men. We have two utility patterns on this two
brush idea, and the goal is for the bristle heads
to be within the handle so that you can have
a year's worth of two brush in one. So you
snap off the bristle head that you've been using, let's

(01:14):
say three months down the line, it gets freed the
bacteria filled bristles and you snap it off and then
you open the area for letting the tray out from
within the handle. You snap off the new bristle head
and snap it in the area that you're going to
use again in your mouth.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
That's amazing.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
So the handle itself is stationary, it's just one unit,
and then the tip of it, the brush. All tip
is an insert, so you remove it after the next
amount of time. And yeah, so as it's sold in packaging,
does it come with the brush attached and then three
extras or how is it packaged?

Speaker 1 (01:52):
I'm curious.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
So at this stage we have not gone through manufacturing distribution.
Our goal is licensing. That was from the get go.
But the vision is that, yes, it would be this
trade that would be sold separately. Therefore you can have
loyalty from the customer to that specific basically, let's say
Colgate or ORB or whichever toothbrush company desires this product,

(02:18):
and therefore that customer loyalty because the trade can only
fit in that handle, which has that hollow space.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Of course, of course, so you're building the unit around
the brand specifically for licensing exactly right. That's exciting now,
So obviously you've done some case studies with your prototypes
and what is your background?

Speaker 2 (02:41):
So I'm a general dentist and I think that coincides
very well with this.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah, I think it does as well.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Actually, I love that about you that you and your husband.
Your husband is a pharmacist, is that correct?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Metaphor correct?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Right?

Speaker 1 (02:54):
So your husband is.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
A pharmacist, you're a dentist. So this is your field
for both of you, really a medical field, and so
what inspired this idea? Yeah, it will be in the dentistry, definitely.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
And it's kind of funny.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
The patients that I would have would ask me, is
there like a two brush that lasts a long time?
Because every time we just keep switching and switching and
last minute it's hard to run to the store. It
might even be closed.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
And actually, as.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
For the pharmacy part, they would go to him and
ask him which grant lasts the longest. So we kind
of started, you know, brainstorming, and thought, why not just
have something that's convenient and available. I know there's a
lot of companies out there that have like subscription models
or that you kind of get the bristle head with
the handle like this kind of length, but you have

(03:40):
to store it inside the cabinet or you have to
store it separately from the actual tube brush. So in
our case, the storage is within the container and the
that's the intention to have convenience.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
To everything in just into one unit. So where we
at today with your invention. I know you just mentioned licensing,
so you're not manufacturing yourself, which a lot of people
will make that decision, right, do I want to manufacture
and produce this product myself, do all the distribution, the marketing,
the creative content behind it, or do I want to
license it? So what made you come to that decision

(04:16):
for licensing?

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Definitely? So when we when we initially got married, we
wanted to focus on our careers for my dental and
his pharmacy. So we knew that taking on another another
type of career, which is a whole new science on
its own, this whole you know, source as situation and
behind the scenes, we knew there's a lot of two
brush companies out there who just know A to Z

(04:39):
what to do, so our intention was to license it
to them.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
We just get loyalties out of that. Okay, that's great.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
So what kind of challenges have you faced or are
you facing right now that you want to talk about
anything that you're just like, Oh, we just can't get
past this part.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
So? I think I think the issue was one of
the prototypes, well the prototypes that we had. We did
a dr TV commercial with it, but we never aired
that commercial because it would require us to have our
own inventory, which we didn't. But that prototype we don't
unfortunately have in possession anymore because there was a company
who potentially we wanted to do business with, but because
of the whole COVID thing, you know, they had to

(05:17):
shut down and it didn't work out. So at this moment,
I'm happy that AI exists. I'm happy that three D
modeling exists through through computer versus having to potentially create
a new prototype. I can just use, you know, to
promote the idea this three D version, so that that
is what I'm happy about. But that was one of
our issues that we had to deal with, not having

(05:40):
a prototype physically.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
So yes, I think we dropped off for just a
moment there.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
So we were talking about your prototypes, so.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
If you can just pick up from there, sure, Sure,
I wasn't informing that I did. We did have a
prototype before. We used it to create a DRTV commercial,
but we never aired that commercial because we would have
to have inventory in place. But the unfortunate part is
that the prototype is no longer not possession because there
was a company we would potentially have been dealing with,

(06:15):
but because of the whole COVID thing, they had it
and we don't have it any longer. However, because the
whole AI and three D modeling exists through computer, our
intention is not to go through the prototype yet if
not necessary, but use the three.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
D modeling instead. When promoting two companies here, I think
we lost connection again that we all.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Oh, I'm so sorry. Can you hear me now? Okay, yeah,
you're leading me to my next quest because this is
what we love about inventing.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
So those are challenges, right yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Covid as well, you're still in development, you're trying to
figure out your manufacturing. You get this great opportunity to
do this show where it's recorded, but then the right
hit because they're like, well, you need inventory, you know,
to participate in this.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
You're like, well, we're not.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Going down that route, but you know that leads me
to what are your triumphs? So you get through this challenge,
you found a solution using AI and three D modeling,
So there's some triumph behind challenges always, So tell me
about that.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Well, I'm definitely happy that a lot you know, using
using our website, portal and LinkedIn is definitely a helpful tool.
It gives eyes to you know, and the inventors.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
App as well.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
It gives ability to be seen by different companies, and
there have been interactions and conversations of potential agreements and
how it would work, what type of clauses to include.
So that's the process that we're I guess you can
say swimming in now and let's just see to what
it can lead. But I think I think the concept

(07:53):
of so many years has been passing by and now
we're at this moment. So I'm super happy that there's
a result.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Happy, you know, if you've Boff also mentioned something else
that's really worth sharing and valuable is this takes time.
There is no such thing as just this overnight success.
And as inventors we have to be really patient and
baby steps and consistency of keep pushing and pushing and
pushing and take a lot of rejection along the way.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
So what advice would.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
You give inventors new or in the middle of a
process kind of like where you are right now, kind
of not completely where you want to be, but you
know you're on a really solid, strong path towards it.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
What advice do you have.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
That's a great question, because that's that's an important one
where a person I think needs inspiration even though they
might need it constantly. That's I think that's one.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Of my Uh.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
It's not I don't think it's an issue. I think
it's something where we just need that inspirational push to
not give up and to know that, as they say,
a light in the of the tunnel, but you have
to go through that tunnel. The only issue we just
don't know how long that tunnel can be. But that's
why you have to have something in the background to
fall on, not in terms of not doing then mentioned,

(09:12):
but simultaneously source of income, simultaneously something that helps support
you and then once this can go big, then you
can just rely on that.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yeah, well, you're just slaying it with the segues today,
because my next question was going to talk about what's
the value of the inventor Smart community app that you're
a member of, and of course the National Inventor Club.
That's our founder and leader, Brian Freed, has been focused
on for so long is put this community app together,

(09:44):
which you can download from the App Store, Google Play,
and being a member of the community where we're just
inundated with inventors from all different stages right, Some of
us are just starting, some have product already on the market,
some are just in and early stage development. But it
is a community of independent inventors, just like yourself and

(10:07):
your husband. So where's the benefit that you find just
being part of the community and being involved in the
app and Brian and myself and we've met a couple
of times now, so it's fun to get familiar with everybody.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Sure, And I love that feeling you're right because you
know that one one go to place that has it
all in a package, so we don't have to worry
where else do.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
We find information? Is our information that we're.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Finding accurate or not? We know that this hub, let's
call it created by Brian Freed and your a big, big, amazing.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
Help in front of the scenes, behind the scenes, so
it's super cool.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
But I feel comfortable, I feel safe there because I
feel that whatever I'm going to ask the inventors have
gone through and then they feel that I am as
their peer. They're equal that there's no nobody's arguing over things.
It's more like information source and help.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
What a lovely thing to say.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Yeah, and I think that you know, I'm asking that
question during our spotlight interviews and everybody seems to have
the same kind of theme message back, like it's such
a community. Everybody's there being so helpful. It's a trusted source.
It's a it's a trusted source. And I think as
independent inventors, there's so many scary stories out there. There's

(11:23):
so many different companies that are taking advantage of small inventors.
We just don't have the information and we get caught up,
we get confused or or whatever. So this community, the
Inventor Smart community is really encompassed. This community and trust
and hey, we're all in this together. And Brian obviously

(11:45):
has been incredible access to him for one on one
questions and all the content that's been created, videos, past meetings,
all the resource tabs within the app. I mean, I'm
an independent inventor as well, and I I mean I
use it as a huge resource. If I have a
trademark question. I'm like, you know what, I know there's

(12:07):
information in there. So we are thrilled to have you
as a premium member of the organization. And I love
your product. I mean I get it, you know, and
I think it's so smart, and I love it that
you are a dentist and this is your field, you know.
I think that speaks valumes to your credit of who

(12:29):
you are and what your product is.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
And I just know, no, I appreciate I appreciate the support,
the interest, and I also can can envision it as
something even for kids to use, like a like a queue,
like you know when you when you put in the
bristle head, it has a different feature of a spider
Man and the next day it could be Wolverene and
then you know each time, so I have that desire

(12:53):
to brush versus being forced to brush, So it could
be a creative touch to it. And especially the size
and the bristlehead, it's very I feel there's a big, big.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Path for it. That's amazing.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
And you know it's like build a brush, right, I
love that build a brush right?

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah, yeah, And then maybe you have other spin offs.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
Have you thought about that.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Like you're like well, we have something, not ready to
talk about it, but once those creative juices start to
flow and you kind of see something come together.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Do you have ideas for second or thirds? Just curious?
I feel yes.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
In our patent we also have related to timing, timer
and really indicator lights like oh, the three the panel
with the three bristleheads is finished, get a new panel.
So we have ideas of how to make it a
version one, version two, and also actually my husband I
kind of have a binder of other ideas that we
want to yeah by step exactly.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
But I love that energy and that excitement. You know,
you're a true inventor, you know, just had even last bit. Yeah,
we're working on this, but we actually do have a
little binder over here too.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
You know.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
It's kind of this addicting process, you know. I mean
I've been told many times, hey, can you work on
one thing at a time, and I'm like, no, I
sometimes I can't, you know, So it just depends on
who you talk to, right, But I also believe that
you can get something so far and if you have

(14:29):
something else in your head, it's okay to to write
it down, get some drawings done.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
Because we learn over time. The process has to go slow.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Anyway, right, it is not, you know, a quick zoom process.
I mean, if it is, and that's your experience out there,
I mean, let us know, inspire us, right, But for
most of us it is kind of a long drawn
out process. But I think for you and for many
of our community members, success is right there.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
You know, I don't think you would have come this far.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
It could only come this far right without sounding like
a cliche.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Right, for sure? I agree with that, and I feel
that it sounds rings true to me for sure.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Doesn't it doesn't it feel like it? I mean I
feel it in this interview with you today. I can't
wait to hear about the licensing deal that you and
your husband have secured, and then you will let us
know the day and time it's going to be released
and who the company is. Once your contracts are signed,
will have you back on and we'll talk about that
and we'll see it in the stores and we'll just

(15:39):
be so inspired by your success as well, and you'll.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Come back and share that with us.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
That's super cool.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
I would love that. Yes, thanks, all right, Tina.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
It was so great to see you today and the
next time we're in Florida. We were just there to
meet up with our friends at the Patent Professor. We
are going to look you up and we'll actually meet
in person.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
That'd be wonderful. I'm definitely looking forward to that.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Yeah, me as well, Me as well.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Okay, doctor Tina, thanks for being part of episode three
of the Inventor Spotlight series that we do here with
the Inventor Smart Community and the National Inventor Club. And
again we'll wrap this up and we're looking forward to
seeing you in the app very soon.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Awesome same here.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Thank you, so y, thank you. Have a great day.
Bye bye bye

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
