socks stuck to the bedroomceiling light, no one knew how.
Alice and her little brotherFreddy were supposed to be
asleep, but they weren't.
Yeah, they were in theirbedroom, wide awake, whispering
under their starry blankets.
A rainy night fort of pillows, surrounded them with a
flashlight glowing like a tinymoon.
(00:42):
Alice was drawing sandwiches inher notebook.
Freddy was chewing on the cornerof his sleeve.
I'm not sleepy, whispered.
Ready?
Alice nodded.
Me neither.
Maybe we need a midnight snack.
Just then click, A soft soundcame from behind the dresser.
A very small sound like a teacupbeing gently set down.
They both rose.
(01:03):
Did you hear that?
Alice whispered.
Freddy pulled a blanket up tohis nose.
The sound came again.
Click, followed by a gentlewhistling.
Sound like a kettle, almostready to boil.
Alice ran to the dresser there.
Behind it was somethingimpossible.
A round little door about thesize of a cookie tin with swirly
golden trim and steam curlingout from underneath.
(01:26):
It hadn't been there before.
Painted on the front in loopyletters were the words.
Molly Broom Well's midnight TeaTime.
guest welcome.
Freddy's eyes got huge.
I've never seen that before.
Alice reached out and gave thedoorknob a tiny turn and the
door swung open.
Inside was a spiral staircaseand somehow far below was at the
(01:49):
smell of cinnamon and jam.
A cheerful voice floated up.
Well, don't just peak mylovelies.
It's nearly time for sandwiches.
Alice looked at Freddy.
Freddy looked at Alice and handin hand.
They crawled through the doorstraight into their nighttime
adventure at the bottom of thestaircase.
They stepped into a kitcheninside a little cottage, but
(02:12):
this was no ordinary kitchen.
The walls were lined withteapots wearing tiny knitted
hats, and the floor gentlybounced like a soft sponge cake.
Standing by the window was akind faced woman in shiny boots
and a cloak, the color ofblueberry jam.
She had a large pointy hat and alittle teacup balanced neatly on
(02:33):
a saucer.
Well, hello there, she said, with a warm smile.
I'm Molly Bromwell.
Which of weather?
And midnight picnics.
She quickly opened a beautifulpicnic basket and out floated
little triangle sandwichesswirling around like
butterflies.
Some had cheese and appleslices.
Others had sprinkles.
One landed on Freddy's shoulder.
(02:55):
Go on dry one.
Molly encouraged it's peanut abutter.
Alice took a bite.
It tastes like Saturdaymornings.
Exactly right.
Said Molly.
Now come along.
We're off to find a patch of skyfor our next picnic.
She opened the back door, and totheir amazement, there was a
broomstick floating there.
Molly attached the picnic basketto the back of the broom and
(03:17):
placed a full teapot on thefront.
It was steaming gently.
Molly climbed on and patted theseat for the children.
Hop aboard.
Freddy hesitated.
Are we going to fall?
Oh no.
Dear Molly chuckled.
The broom is as steady as atable with four chairs, and it's
got a great view.
The children climbed up behindher.
The broom gave a happy wiggleand zoomed up into the sky.
(03:41):
They whooshed past rooftops andpuffy clouds sailing through the
starry sky.
A flock of dream sheep flew byin slippers.
A sleepy moon smiled at them.
The children noticed it wasgetting a little bit cold just
then the teapot on Molly's broommagically began pouring warm
cocoa into tiny floating cups.
(04:02):
Molly reached into her cloak andpulled out a little jar labeled
cloud puff marshmallows, extrabouncy.
Can't have cocoa without these, she said.
Popping two into each cup.
The marshmallow spun in slowcircles, leaving sparkly trails
behind them.
Alice took a sip.
Mm, that's so warm.
(04:22):
Freddy licked the marshmallowoff his nose.
Happily There said Mollypointing to a cozy patch of
starlight shaped like a giantmarshmallow perfect picnic spot.
The broom landed softly like afeather out came sandwiches,
floating napkins, and a cakewith three juicy cherries on
top.
Freddy took a big bite ofsomething called a snuggle berry
(04:43):
crumble.
Alice poured more hot cocoa intotheir tiny mugs.
They laughed, sipped andnibbled.
Molly told stories about rainyday dragons and tea kettles that
could predict the weather, Thisguy twinkled all around them.
Then Freddie yawned, his eyesdrooped.
I think I'm sleepy now.
Me too, said Alice.
Stretching like a cat.
(05:04):
Molly smiled and pulled out asoft patchwork quilt.
Time to get you home.
My starlings.
They climbed aboard the broomonce more, the teapot gave a
final hiss, and off they glideddown, down through sleepy winds
and clouds until they reachedthe little door behind the
dresser back in their bedroom.
Molly took them into bed undertheir real blankets with stars.
(05:28):
She gently placed a sandwichnapkin on Freddy's pillow and a
tiny spoon under Alice's.
There she said, A little bedtimemagic.
In case you forget, will we seeyou again?
Oh, almost certainly said MollyMidnight has many picnics left.
She tipped her pointy hat, anddisappeared back through the
door, which softly clicked shutbehind her.
(05:49):
The next morning, the kids wokeup to sunshine and the smell of
fresh toast.
Did we dream that Freddie asked.
Sitting up, Alice opened herhand inside was a single
sprinkle sandwich wrapped in anapkin that read.
Thanks for flying with MollyBroom.
Well see you soon.
They grinned at each other andfrom that day on, they always
kept a space behind the dresserclear, just in case a little
(06:11):
