In this special episode of Legacy Makers, co-hosts Giles Trendle and Sangeeta Waldron speak with Shrouq Al Aila, a courageous Palestinian journalist in Gaza. She was awarded the Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award in 2024. Shrouq leads Ain Media, the company she took over after the death of her husband, filmmaker and journalist, Roshdi Sarraj, who was killed in the ongoing war on Gaza.
What unfolds is a raw and haunting conversation, a rare glimpse into life under siege. Shrouq reflects on the devastation of Gaza’s natural environment, the deep cultural connection Palestinians have with the land, especially with its trees, and most poignantly, the olive tree. She shares the daily struggle of surviving with her young daughter amid relentless bombardment, scarce resources, and overwhelming grief.
Shrouq’s words are both an elegy and a call to witness
