Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, listeners, I cannot thank you enough for stopping by.
It's time for another episode of The Living The Alternative Podcasts,
a show dedicated to breaking the norms. We're not in
it for the white picket fence and a little square
green yard that we've got to mow, although wouldn't be
that bad. No. No, we're going off grid. We're being

(00:23):
no mads. We're living in hammocks and boats. We're being free.
You should be aware that this week's episode is a
continuation of last week's episode, where we in both the
ultimate freedom We got on our boat and just left

(00:46):
became sailing no Mads, the true off grid's spirit. Ever since,
we have been roaming the world, lost at sea, going
from port to port without a care. We've covered everything
from boat types to essential sailing skills and training. We

(01:12):
got into financial planning and ways of earning remote income.
We talked about navigation and route planning as well as
self sufficiency and off grid living. We talked about community
and other legal as well as bureaucratic considerations. We're kicking

(01:38):
today's off episode with safety and security at sea. A
good place to start is by avoiding pirates and theft
risks altogether. You can do this by traveling in groups.
If you have to go through high risk areas, you

(02:02):
should take with you anti piracy deterrents such as dummy guns,
lockable hatches, and deck alarms. If you've got a big
enough deck to need an alarm, you should definitely secure
valuables in hidden compartments. You're going to be at sea
a lot. There will be storms, and you'll need to

(02:26):
be ready for other emergencies. You want to be well
versed in hurricane anchoring techniques and other storm tactics. You'll
want to prep an emergency ditch bag worst case scenario
and be an expert at HF radio and using emergency beacons.

(02:51):
Being a sailing nomad is heavily based on sustainability and
having a low environmental impact. Some eco friendly sailing practices
include using biodegradable soaps and reef safe sunscreens. You can

(03:15):
reduce plastic waste and practice zero waste sailing. There is
ethical fishing and sustainable seafood practices. Sailboats often feature electric
motors and hybrid propulsion systems with regenerative energy from both

(03:38):
hydro and wind power. Currently, the market is exploring hydrogen
as well as biofuel alternatives as well. Mental and physical
well being will be paramount for the sailing no bad.
You'll want to develop exercise routines that primarily use body

(04:02):
weight for exercise in small spaces. Yoga and stretching are
key for injury prevention and managing sleep schedules on long
passages is crucial. All that time at sea weighs heavily

(04:23):
on a mind you can rely on meditation and other
mindfulness techniques. You should avoid burnout and decision fatigue, and
slowly you'll adapt to long periods of solitude if you
are by yourself. A nomadic sailing lifestyle offers freedom, adventure,

(04:50):
and self sufficiency, but it requires reparation, skill building, and
financial planning. My only question is where to next. Let's
dig into a list of the best ports which offer
a combination of affordability, cruiser friendly amenities, safety and ease

(05:14):
of entry. With any luck, we'll find a thriving sailing community.
First up, the Caribbean, one of the most popular regions
for cruising sailors due to its warm weather, trade winds,
and island hopping opportunities. Leperonne in the Dominica Republic is

(05:42):
great as being one of the safest hurricane holes in
the Caribbean. It offers super cheap anchorage fees and has
a large sailing community with expats and locals, as well
as affordable provisioning with local markets. There may be some

(06:03):
bureaucracy with customs and immigration. Occasionally you may have theft concerns,
so lock up your valuables. Prickly Bay and Granada Saint
George's is great because it's outside of the hurricane belt,

(06:23):
making it a safe place for the season. There is
a strong cruiser community with weekly social events and good
marine services and fordable boat yard storage. Some anchorages can
be rolely and immigration fees can add up. Next up

(06:47):
Bocos del Toro and Panama. It's great for its laid
back lifestyle with low costs, a warm tropical weather year round,
and it's close to Panama Canal Pacific crossings. There is
high humidity and lots of rain, and fewer marine supply

(07:09):
stores compared to larger hubs. Should you find yourself in
the Pacific. The Pacific offers some of the most remote
beautiful islands, making in perfect for long term liverboard sailors.
Such as the Sea of Cortes in Mexico. It's great

(07:29):
because it's a well protected anchorage with low costs as
excellent seafood and provisioning options, with great weather during winter months.
There are lots of nearby islands for short cruising trips.
There can be a very hot summer there, and there
may be some visa restrictions for long stays. Next stop

(07:54):
is Savu, Savu and Fiji. It's great because there is
a well established cruiser community, cheap marina fees and has
great anchorages as well as a friendly local community with
an affordable cost of living. Some areas have tricky reef navigation,
however in the cyclone season requires some caution. Next up

(08:20):
ports in the Atlantic and Europe. Horta in the Asaurus,
Portugal is an amazing historic stop for Atlantic crossers. Usually
you'll find free mooring walls with beautiful morals from past sailors.
Horta has affordable food and marine supplies, although it can

(08:43):
be crowded during the high season and whether there can
be unpredictable Lagos, Portugal is great for year round livability.
With a Mediterranean climate, it offers excellent miss and boat
repair facilities and has lots of sailing jobs and expat sailors.

(09:08):
Lagos may be more expensive than some other European stops,
and you'll want to look out for the bureaucratic EU
VISA requirements. Next on our lists, Mendelo in Cape Verde
is a popular stop for Atlantic crossings that offers affordable
living and provisioning. It has warm and dry climate with

(09:32):
good trade winds. Although there's limited repair facilities, there are
some petty theft issues in town as well. Next up
some ports in Southeast Asia, starting with Langkawi and Malaysia.
It's got duty free status so you'll find cheap alcohol

(09:55):
and boat parts, easy customs and immigration, and there are
plenty of protected anchorages there. However, there are limited winds
for sailing and motor use is common. It can be
crowded with long term liver boards folks. Unfortunately, that's all
the time that we've got for today's episode of Leaving

(10:18):
the Alternative Podcast. I hope you've found somewhere to go
