(00:00):
Hi.
Hi.
Welcome to the podcast.
Thank you.
So what do you think about thisbig open mat Koffee Krew?
I think it's just what weexpected.
Really fun.
Everyone's training hard, buteveryone's just smiling and
having a good time.
Introduce yourself.
Okay.
I'm Ali, and, this my son Henry.
He's so cute.
(00:20):
Yeah.
Ali, I met through the KoffeeKrew and we got to roll a couple
of times, even when she had thislittle guy in her tummy.
Yep.
So she never stopped rolling.
Let's talk about some jiu jitsu.
Okay.
Who are you under?
Right now since being pregnant?
And having baby, I'm justtraining under Kevin, basically.
We're around at Solidarity andKuleana, and we've been a little
(00:43):
bit at 10th plant in San Jose, and coffee crew, and we run an
open mat as well.
Where's your open mat?
Uh, Kuleana.
Okay.
And what days are those?
Saturdays Morning.
What time?
7:00 AM.
Oh, that's even earlier thanKoffee Krew.
Yeah.
That's awesome.
When did you start jiu jitsu?
I started in 2019.
So coming up about six years.
(01:04):
Exactly.
And what belt are you at?
Purple.
So out of all those belts thatyou've already escalated in,
what was your hardest belt toovercome?
Probably the one I'm in now.
The purple belt.
Yeah.
I left the country I wastraining in, moved a couple
times and just reestablishing, why I'm doing jiu jitsu, during.
(01:26):
His whole belt.
So I think it's just been moreof like an introspective
personal process Yeah.
Than just training as hard as Ipossibly can.
Like I did white and blue belt.
So it's different.
Now you have your son and thatadds more.
You and Kevin, offset back andforth half the open mat.
You do.
Then half he does, right?
Yeah.
If we're lucky, we get someoneto hold him and then we get
(01:48):
around together.
So we can still train.
That's good.
This little guy's gonna be, onthe mats before you know it.
Yeah.
What's your go-to submissionfrom Guard?
Honestly, I usually do anomoplata and then I just try to
break your arm in whicheverdirection it's gonna work.
But that's generally the entry Iget into, and then it's, I just
(02:10):
change between, kimuras andtriangles in our bars until we
catch you in one of them.
You grab a lot of elbows, youcollect a lot of elbows.
I collect elbows.
Yeah, I know you do.
How do you approach trainingwith lower bouts versus higher
belts?
Well, I guess I just find outwhat they can do.
(02:33):
No matter who they are.
Once we start, sometimes I getsurprised, a lot of lower belts
do a lot of research on, legblocks and things like that.
I kind of just have to, if I'mjust trying to train really
hard, I'll just open up and showwhatever I've got and see what
they can do about it.
I generally don't try to findout who they are first.
(02:55):
But just kind of, open up mygame and see where they can stop
it and challenge me.
I found out a few times todaythat way, but, I think that
helps me the best probably.
And then I like to just play alot with, leverage and angles
and it's more about the size oftheir body even than their belt
(03:17):
that changes how I'm gonna roll.
Right?
So it's either gonna be tryingto change their posture to the
ground or relative to me.
So either I'm gonna try to breakthem or I'm gonna get around
them.
And then usually it depends ontheir size, how I, how well I
can do that.
Right on.
Okay.
Thank you for coming on andanswering a couple of questions.
Thank you.
Maybe one of these days you'lldo a full interview with me.
(03:38):
I'd love too.
I'm so happy to be here.
Okay.
Thank you.
Bye.
