(00:00):
Welcome to the podcast.
(00:01):
I'm glad to be here.
Thank you.
Yeah.
All right.
I'm glad to be here.
Thanks.
Introduce yourself and, tell ushow you got started in jiu
jitsu.
My name is Mark.
I started jiu jitsu in 2012.
I wrestled in high school.
That's how I got into grappling.
My brother was my wrestlingpartner during that time, and a
bunch of his friends, which isJosh's cousins.
(00:22):
Right on.
Josh, tell us how you gotstarted into jiu jitsu.
Well, I was into, mixed martialarts.
So from, 1999 to about the endof 2007, I was doing MMA.
And then, in the end of 2007 is,when I started doing, jiu jitsu.
So what, gravitated you towardsthe jiu jitsu?
I wanted to do something, aftermy MMA.
(00:45):
I wanted to do something that'ssimilar and I thought that, jiu
jitsu, was pretty close to whatI was doing.
With, you know, minus gettinghit and stuff.
Yeah.
I'm Derek.
I started jiu jitsu, around2014.
Been kind of off and on over theyears, but, I got started
because, I got bored with mytraditional just gym and I
played a lot of basketballgrowing up, so I wanted to get
into something new.
(01:05):
And fortunately, I knew Josh waybefore I started training, so
he's been asking me for years togive it a try.
And I finally did, one time andgot hooked ever since.
I just loved how, there's somuch thought involved and it
forced your body to do stuffthat it wasn't used to.
And just trying to figure outhow, like I'm getting swept,
getting tap, things like that.
I just got me really addicted,so I got hooked that way and it
(01:27):
was like something completelynew for me.
How do you adapt your game fordifferent body types and
athletic levels?
When I competed very young, Iwas like at 135s and throughout
for years, I went up weight, Iwent to 1, 3 5, 1 45 65, and I
went to one 70.
So I kind of knew what to expectfrom the lighter guys and I knew
what to expect from the heavierguys.
(01:48):
But a lot has to do with ourcoaches, which is like Vargas,
Josh, Wayne, a lot of those guysthat play very top heavy.
So I developed a lot from thembeing able to trim back and get
back to guard and, defend whereI needed to defend.
So a lot of it has to do withour team.
How about you, Josh?
When I'm rolling with, whoeverit is, I like to, feel out their
(02:11):
pace and feel out theirmovements.
And then from there as we'rerolling, I kind of dictate what
I want to do.
I feel like as long as I'm ableto do what I'm doing, then then
it's good.
You know what I mean?
Right.
I think they're gonna be in thedefense most of the time because
I'm just doing what I want todo.
You try to stay ahead of them.
Yeah.
Try to stay ahead, do your game, play your game pretty much.
(02:31):
Alright.
How about you Derek?
Yeah.
Kind of along the lines of whatJosh said, I try to match
energy.
I don't consider myself like thefastest or most strong, most
athletic, so depending like howtheir pace is with me is kind of
how I dictate that.
So I'm not gonna try to gasmyself being faster or try to,
tire myself being stronger.
It's just whatever they give me,I give that same energy back.
(02:51):
So, make sure I explode at theright times, make sure I'm fast
and, slow down at the righttimes.
It's all timing with me.
Okay.
From when you were younger tonow, how do you train smart as
you get older?
You want answer this one Mark?
Yeah.
You know, honestly, I think it'sjust knowing your partners,
(03:12):
being honest with other peoplethat you roll with.
Like everyone says it's notADCC, we are here to learn,
right?
We are here to make sureeveryone's safe because we still
want people to come in, feelingthat they're capable.
A higher belt like we are, we dohave a responsibility towards
our safety.
Yeah.
How about you, Josh?
Okay.
Um, can you repeat the question?
(03:32):
Okay.
How do you train smart as youget older?
Definitely I try to slow down mygame and, be more defensive if
they're more, athletic becausethen I feel like, they can be
athletic as they want, and now Iget to learn my defenses, For me
it's just, if they're fast, ifthey're stronger, then I get to
work on other things.
And then if they're slower thanme, then I get to work on, more
(03:54):
technique and really just, timing is what I'm focused on.
Yeah.
Not so much of trying to matchtheir, like speed or energy.
I'm just build walls, work mytiming.
'cause I feel like the higherlevels you are, it's gonna come
down to timing.
How about you Derek?
Yeah, I like to, go on my ownpace too, I know, Josh mentioned
about like more athletic, morestrong guys.
(04:16):
But, I just try to findopenings.
I don't try to force them or tryto beat them to a certain
position.
Well, I do, but not in the waythat you would think.
It's just if it's open, I'llwork my way there.
'Cause there's always someonefaster, there's always someone
stronger.
So you just have to be mindfulof that.
But also, taking time to recoverproperly.
You know, getting enough sleep, stretching, getting massages.
Yeah, for sure.
(04:36):
Like it really adds up as youget older.
So I'm only 38 and I feel italready.
So like it only gets harder asget older.
Yeah, I agree.
Okay guys, that's it for rightnow and um, I look forward to
having you guys on my podcastone of these days.
Each one of you individually,okay?
Yeah, yeah.
All.
Okay, take care guys.
Giving away us.
You gave away our secretsthough.

No, no, no.
(04:56):

No secrets.
