(00:00):
Welcome to Luckee's podcast, sointroduce yourself and then tell

(00:04):
me what school you're from.
Yes.
Sam Meeker, been training forthree years.
Those three years we're at,Battle Control jiu jitsu.
I just actually recently starteda new school.
I started this week with Heroes.
Oh, nice.
Yeah.
Hopefully, that goes good.
It's a better scheduling for me.
Okay.
They have four gyms, every oneof'em is like maybe 15 minutes
or so from the house.
More convenience.

(00:24):
Yeah.
Yeah.
What brought you to the coffeecrew today?
Well, today, because it's such abig event, right?
I try to go as many Sundays as Ican.
And today's kinda like bringingthe whole Bay Area together.
I thought that was kind of cool.
So.
It was.
There's a lot of people outthere and, but I don't think
anybody got hurt.
There was a lot of high fiving,a lot of smiling, and people
just, enjoying themselves.
That was cool.
Kiko and his group did a reallygood job in putting this all

(00:46):
together.
It was awesome.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I told him, I said, man, greatjob.
You know, a lot of hard work andmaybe, it's gonna be an annual
thing.
Then maybe next year it'll be abigger spot.
You know what I mean?
You never know.
Right?
I think it's gonna have to be abigger spot.
I was in there trying to takephotos and it was pretty jam
packed in there.
Yeah.
And with all those people, I waslike, I had a little A DHD, I
was like, oh shoot.

(01:06):
I seen you dodging and weavingand you weren't like laying
down, taking your shots likenormal either.
And those are the best shots, the ones that are way on the
ground.
So it's not enough space.
Yeah, no space.
Let me ask you a couple ofquestions in regards to jiu
jitsu.
Go ahead.
What was your biggest mentalhurdle as a white belt?
Breathing.
And as a blue belt.
I was still breathing.
I just, I'm horrible at it.
I don't know, man.

(01:27):
I had asthma growing up as akid, really bad.
And I still have asthma.
You never really get rid of it.
I haven't had any attacks, but Ifind it really hard, like just
to breathe.
It's not just somebody chokingme out.
But I'm trying to control it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know what would help isdoing a little cardio.
I was thinking maybe swimmingbecause Oh, that would be good
too.
Maybe swimming might do it to.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Any type of cardio I think wouldhelp you out.

(01:48):
Okay.
So, if you had to describe yourjiu jitsu style in three words,
what would that be?
Actually, three.
Words.
Yeah.
Um, not too fast.
There we go.
I do, a lot of gi and then thenogi is a little bit too fast
for me.
I really don't have anything togrip on and hold, but, yeah.

(02:09):
So three words, not too fast.
Okay.
Sounds good.
What first drew you to jiujitsu?
Alright, this is good.
So my daughter Zoe, so she wasdoing jiu jitsu.
And I would go every class todrop her off, but I would hang
out for the two hours and justwatch and Right.
I did that for probably, maybe acouple years.

(02:29):
Just watching her and then, inmy mind I'm thinking like, ah,
these kids aren't listening, youknow?
Right.
You know, ah, you gotta do thisand do that.
And then I started picturingmyself doing it in my head.
And then I just talked to thecoach and I said, Hey, I don't
wanna take anything away fromher training, but I would like
to maybe try it out myself.
And then once you do it, you dokind of get hooked on it.
It's like, it's fun.

(02:49):
Yeah.
It's a lot of fun learningsomething new.
But that's what got me into it.
Okay.
What was your biggest challengein jiu jitsu?
Biggest challenge.
It's probably my weight, I'm abigger guy.
Yeah.
And, when I first started out,it was like a shock to my
system.
I lost a lot of weight.
I have put a lot back.
I've put maybe, 30 pounds backon, that weight that I lost.
Right.
And, that was like the biggestchallenge, just being a larger

(03:10):
dude.
But even here, there's a lot oflarger guys.
Yeah.
And, everyone's real cool.
I don't see anybody like, getting crazy out there.
They don't.
It's all about skill andtechnique, right?
It's afterwards just slappinghands and saying, Hey, great
job.
That's cool.
Who else did you, do your jiujitsu under?
Greg Laura.
Battle Control.
Who's the sensei at the newschool that you go to?

(03:30):
Well, you know what, there'sfour different gyms, I just
tried the downtown one.
The coach was, Trevor and then Itried the east side one, this
week.
Uh, Nick Is his name.
I'm still kind of learning.
They had such a big schedule, soI'm trying to just figure out
what schedule where I can maybework, three nights a week and
then do the open mat on Sundays.
Okay.

(03:50):
So right on.
I just haven't figured it outyet.
Okay, cool.
Sam, well thank you for beinghere.
Well, thank you.
Luckee.
I appreciate it.
You're welcome.
I really enjoy the podcast.
I think you're doing a greatjob.
It's just good to talk about jiujitsu and people having fun, and
that's awesome.
Okay, thank you, Sam.
Thank you.
Take care.
Bye-bye.
