Welcome to Majors & Minors at Cal Poly Humboldt!

This show takes a close look at the rich academic offerings of our campus and all of the areas of study that can be pursued as a student. Each episode features an interview with a department Chair (or Chairs) and focuses on the specifics of an area of study and the value of that pursuit both inside the college experience and beyond.

This week's guest is Erin Kelly, Chair of the Department of Forestry, Fire and Rangeland Management, which is housed inside the College of Natural Resources & Sciences. The curriculum focuses on teaching students to connect with and manage the forests that make up ⅓ of the land in the United States, ensuring a sustainable future for the nation. During their time at Cal Poly Humboldt, students in this department get hands-on learning in some of the world’s most spectacular and important forests and rangelands, personal attention from faculty, and a clear path to a career outdoors.

Erin Kelly has a Phd from Oregon State University in Forest Social Science, an Masters of Science from Oregon State University in Forest Resources and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Whitman College.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
