This week's success strategy, surround yourself with positives.
The odds were stacked against her. Born to Puerto Rican immigrant parents who did not speak English,

(01:46):
Sonia grew up in a working class housing project in the Bronx.
There she witnessed firsthand the devastating damage drugs, violence, gangs, and crime could inflict on a community.
It was a challenging environment for any child, but Sonia's path was made even more difficult by personal struggles that would have broken many others.

(02:09):
At the tender age of seven, she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, a condition that would require her constant attention and care for the rest of her life.
The diagnosis was a harsh blow, but it was only the beginning of the trials she would face in her childhood.
Just two years later, when Sonia was nine, her father, who had long battled alcoholism, passed away, and her mother was said to be emotionally distant.

(02:38):
But Sonia found solace from her troubled home life in the loving arms of her nearby grandmother and the comforting pages of books.
Through reading, I escaped the bad parts of my life in the South Bronx, she later reflected, and through books, I got to travel the world and the universe.

(02:58):
It, to me, was a passport out of my childhood, and it remains a way, through the power of words, to change the world.
Books did more than just provide an escape. They ignited a passion for learning and a thirst for knowledge that would shape the course of Sonia's life.
She immersed herself in her studies, wholeheartedly embracing academic excellence and quickly rising to become a top student.

(03:25):
Her dedication to learning was not just a means of escaping her circumstances, but a way of actively shaping her future.
Sonia's fascination with crime and investigation ignited through her childhood readings of Nancy Drew mysteries.
These stories of a young, intelligent girl solving complex cases sparked something in Sonia, perhaps a recognition of her own potential to make a difference in the world.

(03:52):
But it was a different fictional character who would truly set Sonia on her life's path.
The captivating courtroom television drama Perry Mason became a source of inspiration for young Sonia.
As she watched the show, she made a unique observation that would change her life forever.

(04:13):
I realized that the judge was the most important player in that room, she said.
Every time Mason wanted to do something, he had to ask the judge for permission.
She was hooked, and by the age of 10, she firmly declared her aspirations to attend college and become a lawyer.

(04:34):
I was going to college and I was going to become an attorney, and I knew that when I was 10 years old, she said, 10, that's no jest.
From that moment on, Sonia never lost focus. She excelled in her studies, driven by her newfound purpose.
As she grew older, she came to appreciate more and more the importance of how laws define our relationships as a community,

(04:59):
as well as situations in which unfair laws or laws with unintended consequences need to be changed.
That's how we grow as a society, she said. I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to be a voice in those positive changes.
Sonia's important job in life as a member of this community is to be involved in bettering it, to be a voice for change,

(05:23):
to take action when you see things you don't like, to be civically involved in making this a better union.
Sonia's innate optimism and strong ambition prevented her from giving up or giving in.
She achieved valedictorian honors at her middle and high schools, earning her a prestigious full ride scholarship to Princeton University,

(05:47):
graduating summa cum laude and receiving the Taylor Pine Prize, the university's recognition of the most outstanding student who exemplified both academic excellence and service.
She secured admission to Yale Law School.
There, she served as the editor of the esteemed Yale Law Journal and once again graduated as the top ranking student in her class.

(06:11):
The subsequent year, she successfully passed the New York Bar Exam, obtaining her certification to practice law in the state of New York.
It was the culmination of a dream she had held since childhood, but for Sonia, it was just the beginning.
Joining the Office of New York's District Attorney, she dedicated the next five years to prosecuting dozens of cases involving child abuse, murder, robbery, drug trafficking, police misconduct and fraud.

(06:42):
Her work in the DA's office was challenging and often heartbreaking, but it also gave Sonia invaluable experience and insight into the real world application of the law.
Those around her recognized her potential.
She is a superstar in the making, one supervisor wrote in an evaluation, and another assistant district attorney observed, she has natural leadership qualities and presence, which, combined with her other professional attributes, make her shine with all the characteristics of a trial lawyer.

(07:17):
After leaving her position as an assistant district attorney, she launched her own private practice and later became a partner at a larger firm in New York City.
It was during this time that one of her partners, David Botwinick, urged her to apply for an appointment as a federal judge.
At first, Sonia resisted, thinking she was too young to be seriously considered for a judicial appointment.

(07:42):
But Botwinick persisted and eventually Sonia surrendered to his pleas and applied.
In 1992, Sonia's application bore fruit in spectacular fashion.
With the recommendation of New York U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the nomination of President George H.W. Bush, and the confirmation of the United States Senate, Sonia fulfilled her childhood dream, becoming a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

(08:13):
Over the next five years, Sonia served with distinction on the district court. She earned fame and accolades for her handling of the 1994-95 Major League Baseball strike, resulting in a resolution between players and owners.
Her fair and decisive handling of this high-profile case earned her the nickname the Baseball Judge and caught the attention of President Bill Clinton.

(08:38):
Impressed by her work, Clinton nominated Sonia to sit on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the highest federal court in New York.
This time, however, Sonia's confirmation met with political resistance. But, true to her character, Sonia took it in stride.
I'm a firm believer that adversity and failure are things you want to have," she said. Those things help you grow, and inevitably, they help you grow in positive ways. It's when you let them define you that they become negative, and that's something I would never permit those things to do.

(09:15):
Sonia's resilience paid off. She won confirmation to the Second Circuit where she would hear over 3,000 cases over the next decade and write nearly 400 majority opinions.
Her work on the Second Circuit further cemented her reputation as a fair, thoughtful, and incisive jurist.

(09:36):
And then, in 2009, came the culmination of Sonia's remarkable journey. President Barack Obama nominated her to the highest court in the land.
And with that, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic justice on the United States Supreme Court.
