“Dilah the Rejected: A Tale of Love Beneath the Waters”
In the scorching heat of Africa, a simple act of kindness sets off a chain of events that will test the bonds of family forever. When young Thakane gives her brother milk from the sacred tree Koumongoe, she unknowingly breaks an ancient taboo that will change her life forever. Her furious father drags her across the plains to be sacrificed to a fearsome ogre, but the animals of the veld sing out in protest—why should such a compassionate daughter pay for her brother’s demands?
What follows is a story of unexpected love, as Thakane finds herself married to the ogre’s son Masilo, only to face an even more terrifying custom: all girl children must be fed to the ogre. When baby Dilah is born, Thakane makes a desperate choice that leads to a magical pact with a mysterious old woman beneath the lake’s surface.
For years, Thakane keeps her terrible secret, meeting her daughter in the hidden world beneath the waters. But when the truth is finally revealed, it will take a thousand cattle and a father’s love to bring Dilah back to the world above—if the old woman will let her go.
