While the Jews had the Law, they missed the point of it and instead tried to obtain righteousness through it. Paul demonstrates that righteousness is not achieved through the Law but through faith, which connects someone to the Righteous One, Jesus Christ.
Paul expresses anguish over the state of the Jewish, for they have largely rejected Christ. Just having a certain ethnic heritage is no guarantee of salvation, but instead depends on God's will and purpose.
