That's right. And now join Pokémon Trainer Jed

(00:32):
on a non-stop action-packed, laugh filled perilous journey.
Turn your head around, grab yourpokeballs, and get ready for a
fantastic Pika Pals podcast where the excitement never ends.
Welcome to the Pika Pals podcast.
I'm your host Pokémon trainer Jed and I Thank you for tuning

(00:53):
in. Although this week I'm honorary
Team Rocket member of Jed because Team Rocket have taken
over the Peak of Powers podcast. It's a Team Rocket takeover.
Now usually on the Peak Powers podcast I go back and re watch
an episode of the original Pokémon anime series.

(01:14):
But this week is a little bit different because we're going to
be exploring all things Team Rocket, the dastardly trio that
follow Ash on his adventures trying to capture Pikachu.
We're taking a detour on our journey through the Pokémon
anime series and looking back atJesse James and Meowth.

(01:39):
We're trying to uncover some fascinating Team Rocket trivia,
some never before heard Team Rocket facts.
And I even have a very special Team Rocket song that I'm going
to perform later in the episode,so stay tuned for that.
Prepare for trouble, make it double because we are about to

(02:01):
get to today's episode. It's Team Rocket take over.
Let's get to it. The.
Team Rocket Trio sometimes abbreviated as trio with a

(02:21):
capital TR for team rocket or JJM, but often simply referred
to as team Rocket. Some of my personal favorite
characters in the Pokémon anime series.
A trio of team rocket members consisting of Jesse, James and
meowth. Now, the Team Rocket trio first

(02:42):
appeared in the episode Pokémon Emergency, which was actually
episode 2. So Team Rocket did not make an
appearance in the debut episode of Pokémon.
But in episode 2, they arrived on the scene trying to take over
the Viridian Pokémon Centre. And it was in their first battle
with Ash and their first defeat at the hands of Ash that they

(03:05):
were convinced that Ash's Pikachu had some extraordinary
power. And so the Team Rocket trio made
it their main goal to capture Pikachu.
So let's go back and revisit that moment when Team Rocket
first arrived on the scene in episode 2 of the Pokémon anime

(03:26):
series Who. Are they?
Don't be frightened, little boy.Allow us to introduce ourselves.
To protect the world from devastation.
To unite all peoples within our nation.
To denounce the evils of truth and love.
To extend our reach to the starsabove.
Jesse. James.
Team Rocket let's up at the speed of light.

(03:49):
Surrender now or prepare to fight.
That's right. So that was the debut of Team
Rocket in the Pokémon anime series.
Now in the original English dubbed anime, Jesse was
initially voiced by Rachel Lillis until the dub switched

(04:10):
production from 4 Kids Entertainment to The Pokémon
Company International when in 2006 she was replaced by
Michelle Knotts. Now during her audition, Rachel
Lillis said that she was instructed to make Jessie sultry
but also keep her tough. And I think they're probably 2

(04:30):
words that greatly describe the character of Jesse.
Sultry but tough Rachel Lillis said she did not expect Jesse to
become a recurring character in the series, let alone go on to
become as popular as she was. And a special shout out to the
late, great Rachel Lillis, who'sno longer with us but left a

(04:51):
defining legacy in the characterof Jesse.
Now, James in that particular clip sounded very different, and
that's because originally he wasvoiced by Ted Lewis, at least up
until about episode 8 of the original Pokémon anime series,
where he was then voiced by EricStewart.

(05:14):
You'll notice a lot in these early Pokémon episodes that a
lot of the voice actors are kindof playing around with their
voices and figuring out who their characters are, giving
their characters those signatureattitudes.
Meowth originally voiced by Maddie Blostein for seasons 1 to
8 until she unfortunately passedaway, in which James Carter

(05:38):
Cathcart took over the role of Meowth as well as James in 2006,
and he would continue to voice the characters until 2023.
Now in the Pokémon anime series, which I've been going back and
watching here on my Pica Pals podcast, the Team Rocket trio of
Jesse James and Meowth are a trio of Team Rocket grunts, and

(06:03):
they are the major secondary characters throughout the entire
series, where in each episode they attempt to kidnap Ash's
Pikachu. And in the earliest produced
episodes of the anime, the trio are actually somewhat halfway
intelligent and at times pretty formidable foes for Ash, Brock

(06:24):
and Misty. In some of the earlier episodes
that I've been going back and watching, and still within the
time period that I'm up to currently with my Pika Pals
podcast, they're at times still pretty sinister.
But later in the series, Team Rocket would act more as Comic
Relief characters and are often presented as kind of being

(06:44):
simple minded and bringing slapstick antics to the Pokémon
series. Now, Team Rocket's Meowth is a
common species of Pokémon, but in the Pokémon anime, he's a
pretty unusual Meowth because he's the only Pokémon able to
speak human language, whereas all other Pokémon only it are

(07:05):
syllables of their own names. Let's take a listen to Meowth in
action, trying to convince the Squirtle Squad that he is the
owner of Team Rocket. Did the Squirtle answer.
The Squirtle said Forget it. We know humans can't be trusted.
So make them trust us. That won't be easy, but I'll see
what I can do. Squirtle.

(07:26):
Both of these humans belong to Meow.
Belong. To.
They'll never trust you to. You got liar written all over
you. Just let me handle this.
Oh, you little. Humans are my pets.
I train them, but they're prettystupid.
Now, Jesse and James originally have an Atkins and a Coffin as

(07:47):
their signature Pokémon, and thetrio are later joined by a
Wobbefet as one of the only major recurring Pokémon as the
Pokémon anime progressed. And I sometimes think that
Wobbefet kind of gets left out of Team Rocket, referred to as
Jesse James and Meowth. But what with that makes kind of

(08:07):
just as many recurring appearances later on in Pokémon
anime series. As the anime series progresses,
Team Rocket often used an increasingly large number of,
you know, vehicles and Mecca to try and take out their foes and
steal Pikachu. And most notably, they're seen
travelling around in the Meowth shaped hot air balloon.

(08:31):
They sometimes also use a Garridos shaped submarine in the
early series. And later on we've seen them in
like a Magikarp pedal powered submarine as well.
Later on in the series, Team Rocket become known for their
large number of gadgets. I don't know where they get the

(08:51):
funding from for all of these. I think that somebody's going to
have to do some audit checks at the Team Rocket headquarters
because these guys are spending a lot of Team Rockets funds.
But the Team Rocket characters themselves actually have quite
sympathetic backstories, so theyshare a strong camaraderie.
We may see them arguing often inthe show, and things don't

(09:11):
always go Team Rocket's way, butJesse James and Meowth will
always have each other's backs. You could say it's a hard knock
life to be a member of Team Rocket.
And that's why I put pen to paper and I put together this
special Team Rocket song inspired by Jay-Z Hard knock
life. I'm proud to present Team

(09:34):
Rockets hard knock life. Get ready to say you heard it
first before it went to number one in the charts.
Take the baseline out now. Bounce with it.
Yeah, Let it bump go. From blasting off in the sky

(10:09):
again to stealing some of the rarest Pokémon you've ever seen.
The same some of the dopest mottos Oka's ever heard.
Rate the poker stop, steal the poker balls fleeing the crazy
scene. You know us well from getting
sent flying by Ash out daily. Hell, but since when your pikas
know us to fail Hecna, we stop peakers with rubber gloves, no
shocks. And if you're with us now to

(10:31):
give you a gold coin and what not.
Repping the school of Hard Knocks, we could not let
outsiders defeat our dreams and our boss.
Let's protect the world devastated three ways.
Let's drop the mic and stay realtricky.
Leap off and steal your bike andget misty hissy.
Live infinitely like the memory of our Rachel Lillis.
Jesse. You best prepare when we come

(10:52):
through The Life and Crimes of the Rocket Game Volume 2.
Scheme for those rocked out yourPokémon locked down in the mouth

(11:14):
balloon control the skies. We live in thieving lickid
tongue wubber fat best believe it blasting off again.
Yet we still come back and we'd rather that I flow for Jesse
wishing Jane after chase Twerks for fame.
I see our mission boss. I put my trust in the genius.
James made it double. We were born heels.
So we're breaking your heart now.
You know how Brock feels. We went from rookie grunt to

(11:37):
elite, sleeping in alleyways andstreets.
Be Giovanni's right hand master plan.
We've shed tears, let the thing between our ears and our lies,
life's fears. Then we shout it out.
That's right we tight lipped with phony cops officers, Jenny
we ain't homies and nurse Joy. Y'all can't heal us, shoot,
extend our reach. When our situation ain't
improving, we try and capture every Pokémon moving.

(12:25):
Send out Victory Bell James burger to go please.
That napkins now in our box had a coffin and made it wheezed
troubling still inside of us andas far as progress, you'd be
hard pressed to find another rocket burn as hard as us.
We gave you warning in our firstmotto and y'all struck out.
Didn't really appreciate it tillthe second verse sung out so we
stretched the plan out. X dash name out.
We rocket on top and big pitfalls nonstop boy pika.

(13:15):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Team Rocket Hard Knock Life
Podcast original. Notorious Jed in the house.
Meow, that's right, take it home.

(13:37):
Often any. Well, they have it.
Another Pokémon rap. Along with my Brock introduction
rap, I've actually also started working on another Pokémon song.
I am waiting to hear from a record label, as if they'd like
to sign me as a Pokémon artist. I think that the Pokémon raps

(14:01):
can be best selling hits, maybe Christmas number ones, but I
haven't heard from anyone just yet, so we'll just wait and see
what happens. But I hope you enjoyed it.
I hope you enjoyed my Pokémon rap.
I'm not the best at singing, I'mnot the best at singing by any
means, but I was pretty proud ofthat as I wrote it myself.

(14:23):
I wrote all of that myself. No AI, no AI for that.
I wrote that myself. Or maybe I should have used.
Maybe I should have used. AIAI might have told me it was a
bad idea. Anyway, if you like the Pokémon
wraps, let me know. If you don't want to hear them
ever again, I'll retire from songwriting.
But after that, I think it's probably best that we all take a
pause for the course. Keep the lights on in the Peak

(14:44):
of Power Studio with a quick message from our sponsors and
then I'm going to be right back continuing on the Team Rocket
takeover with some fun Team Rocket trivia.

(17:28):
If you're still listening, the Team Rocket Hard Knock Life song
might have put you off, but if you're still here, that's great
and I really appreciate it. You are listening to the Peek of
Pals podcast and this is a Team Rocket takeover.
It's a Team Rocket Spotlight episode and here is some fun
Team Rocket trivia that I found.Team Rocket is an acronym in the

(17:52):
Pokémon manga. Now the name Team Rocket might
seem pretty straightforward, butin the Pokémon Adventures manga
it has a deeper meaning then it might appear on the surface.
It's actually an acronym that stands for Raid on the City
Knockout Evil Tusks. Now, while the first part is an

(18:13):
obvious reference to Team Rockets criminal activities, the
last part is a bit harder to decipher.
Knockout evil tusks? Do Team Rocket have a long
standing rivalry with walruses? Who knows?
Pokémon fans online have speculated about what it might
mean, but there's actually neverbeen a definitive answer.

(18:35):
But there you go. I didn't know that Rocket
actually stood for something, but it does now.
Jesse and James also have famousnamesakes.
You may have guessed already that Jesse and James are named
after Jesse James, a 19th century American outlaw, bank
robber, train robber, guerrilla fighter, gang leader.

(18:59):
But what you might not have realized is that the Japanese
names also have historical basistoo.
James's Japanese name Kojiro wastaken from Saskia Kojiro, a 17th
century Japanese swordsman who is best known for his demise at
the hands of Mivmoto Mishui, andthat is Jesse's namesake.

(19:22):
Now, the characters of Jesse andJames themselves were actually
inspired by other anime characters, as well as the
creator's ex-girlfriend Takeshi Shudo, who was the chief writer
of the original Pokémon anime. Shout out to Takeshi Shudo based
the character of James Kajuro ona character from his previous Go

(19:46):
Shogun anime, whereas Jesse Musashi was actually based on
Takeshi Sudo's former girlfriendfrom his school days.
Now, Team Rocket might not be the most convincing group of
villains, but it's clear that they're actually pretty nice
guys. One of the things that
symbolizes their inherent goodness as characters in the

(20:09):
Pokémon anime series is just howmuch their Pokémon mean to them.
In episodes that are still to come in our watch along but from
the original series, we see a flashback of James when he was a
little boy having a tight bond with a Growlithe and another
episode where we see that Jessiebecame close friends with a

(20:32):
Chauncey that she met at Pokémonnursing school.
Now both the Pokémon Growleth and Chauncey are associated with
spreading happiness and good fortune to others.
So how bad can Jesse and James really be if they have such love
and affection for Chauncey and Growleth when they were young?

(20:55):
Speaking of nursing school, hereis a strange detail about
Jessie's early years that you may not have known.
She actually trained to be a nurse, but she didn't train to
be a nurse for humans because she wasn't qualified to join the
nursing program. So instead, Jessie joined a

(21:16):
program designed for Chancey, who we would see work at the
Pokémon Centre alongside Nurse Joy.
Imagine seeing Jessie there in an apron alongside the
Chancey's. But since Jesse wasn't actually
a chancy herself and she couldn't use the move sing, in
fact she fell asleep every time her classmates were practising

(21:37):
it, it meant that she couldn't complete the chancy program
either. So Jesse ended up having to
leave without any qualifications.
But she did still form a deep bond with a fellow classmate.
And that is upcoming on an episode that we will watch in
the future. As for James, I found out that

(21:58):
he actually rarely battles any of the Pokémon that he's caught.
Usually in Pokémon, you have to bat away Pokémon in order to
capture it. But this rule doesn't seem to
have applied to James. While he's captured plenty of
Pokémon, there's only one that he actually had to battle in
order to weaken it and capture it inside of a poker ball, and

(22:18):
that was Victory Bell. And perhaps that's why Victory
Bell is always so keen to try and eat James as a way to get
back at him. Now, Speaking of Team Rocket's
most famous Pokémon, or as you might think, their most famous
Pokémon, is Meowth. But Meowth is technically a wild

(22:39):
Pokémon. He doesn't belong to Jesse or
James. It might look like he belongs to
Team Rocket, but he's actually just a free agent of sorts.
He's never been captured inside of a poker ball.
So technically, Meow is free to come and go as he pleases.
And that's actually kind of heart warming if you think about
it. Because he chooses to stay with

(23:01):
Jesse and James because he caresabout them.
Or maybe he just cares about becoming the boss's favorite
Pokémon. But heart warming or not, it
doesn't stop problems for Meow, because Meow's ability to speak
makes him a highly attractive Pokémon to other Pokémon
trainers. He's the only Meowth and the
only Pokémon that can speak bothPokémon and human language, so

(23:25):
other Pokémon trainers see this as an opportunity to try and
capture Meowth. And because Meowth is
technically a wild Pokémon, and he's never been caught inside of
somebody's poker ball, he could be caught by someone else.
Also, did you know that Team Rocket is one of the only
villainous groups in the Pokémonworld that has actually ended a

(23:48):
life? That's pretty heavy, folks.
Now, Team Rocket's sole known victim is a Marawak, who passed
away while trying to protect itschild, Q Bone.
It's not clear which members of Team Rocket are responsible for
this, but it wasn't Jesse, James, or Meow.
However, the wider Team Rocket syndicate have actually ended a

(24:12):
Pokémon's life. Did you also know that James
might actually have a last name?I've done a bit more Team Rocket
research, and although most characters in Pokémon don't have
last names, and James is no exception, there is one source
that points to a possible surname for James.

(24:33):
John Willis. Screen World, which was a book
published in 2003 by Applause Books, referred to James as
James Morgan. So where do they get that from?
Take it with a grain of salt, because it's not.
Maybe Canon, but if it's true, it could make sense as to why in
flashback episodes we see that James held from such a rich and

(24:58):
wealthy family because maybe thesurname Morgan is associated
with the investment banking company JP Morgan Chase.
Now, going back to the Pokémon manga, Jesse and James actually
got married in the Pokémon manga.
In the anime, Jesse and James seem to have a mostly platonic

(25:20):
relationship, and sure, there's plenty of Pokémon fans online
who ship them as a couple. Do people still use that term
ship? I don't even know what it means
to be honest. But I I ship Jesse and James is
what people would say, but they're never explicitly shown
to be romantically involved, at least not in the Pokémon anime
series. However, in the Pokémon

(25:42):
Adventures manga, things are a little bit different as towards
the end of the series the two ofthem actually get married and we
find out that Jesse is actually pregnant.
So it's hard to imagine that these travelling thieves would
ever settle down and start a family.
But who knows, maybe they can teach their kids a thing or two

(26:04):
about blasting off Team rockets Uniforms are based on Bazuko.
Bazuko is a Japanese youth subculture that was most popular
in the 80s and 90s, loosely inspired by American choppers
and greasers. Now those involved in Bazuko

(26:24):
would ride around on customized motorcycles sporting uniforms
called Toko Fuko Special Attack Clothing, and that is what Team
Rocket's uniforms are based on. But that's not the last
connection to a biker gang that Team Rocket has, as there is an
episode coming up called The Bridge Bike Gang where we

(26:46):
actually find out that Jesse andJames were once part of a bike
gang. Now, we've discussed that Meowth
is an incredibly rare Meowth because he can speak both human
and Pokémon. But despite being able to
communicate with humans, Meowth is still a Pokémon.
And so although we can understand most other Pokémon,

(27:09):
the keyword here is most, because when it comes to
extraterrestrial Pokémon like Deoxys and Priopal, Meowth is at
a loss. And this applies that Pokémon
from other planets use a language that's somewhat
differently structured to the one that is used on Earth or the

(27:29):
Earth that we see in the PokémonShow.
And Speaking of Meowth, did you know that Meowth actually has
his own record? Yeah, that's right.
I didn't even intend to say that's right like that, but that
is indeed right. That's right.
Beowulf is a musician. Because in 1999, a few songs
were released by Meow, sung by Meowth's Japanese voice actor

(27:54):
Inuko Inyogma. And the first one was Meowth's
party, which was kind of like anupbeat tune.
And the second one was Meow Song2000.
Do you want to hear a bit of it?Let's see if Spotify will let me
include this. If not, then this might just be
silence, but here's a bit of mouths.
Original record release Meow Song 2000.

(29:00):
My final Team Rocket fact for you was that the leader of Team
Rocket, Giovanni, used to date Ash's mum in Pokémon Live, which
was a musical stage show which toured the USA in the early
2000s. Although it's not technically

(29:21):
considered Canon, some of the content is so bizarre that I
just had to include in my Team Rocket facts.
And it turns out that Ash's mum,Delia, has a history with the
leader of Team Rocket. When Delia was a teenager, she
used to hang out with a bad crowd.
In fact, she used to date Giovanni, the leader of Team

(29:43):
Rocket. And when she went on to meet
Ash's father, she realized that she wasn't into bad guys after
all. And in the present, she feels
nothing but contempt for Giovanni's evil ways.
And many fans have speculated that Delia has a thing with
Professor Oak, but that's another episode for another day.

(30:04):
And that concludes my Team Rocket facts for this very
special Team Rocket takeover edition of the Peak Pals
podcast. If you enjoyed this, then maybe
I'll do more Team Rocket takeover editions of the podcast
in future. Now, usually I go to IMDb The

(30:25):
Very Best, where I find commentsfrom users on the Internet about
the episode of Pokémon that I'vejust discussed.
But instead, let's do a very special IMDb the very Best and
find some user comments about the love for Team Rocket.
Blizzard Lunar says. Respect to James for being the

(30:49):
most based character in anime. He's definitely as good or
superior to Ash when it comes tobefriending Pokémon, but he's
just fighting for the wrong side.
Respect to Jesse for being therefor her comrades when they
really need it. Jesse deserved to win one damn
Grand Festival. Respect to Meow for being

(31:10):
Pikachu's best frenemy and beingable to speak both Pokémon and
human language. The fact that they represent Tom
and Jerry will always be cool tome.
We all know Meowth is Pikachu's best Pokémon threat when they
aren't at odds with each other. I can't think of a goddamn name

(31:31):
too says. Sometimes they can be annoying,
mainly in the original series, but many of the show's most
funny moments come from Team Rocket.
They also work really well as more serious villains instead of
just comedic ones, and some of the most emotional episodes in
the series are from them. I love these goobers,

(31:53):
Revolutionary Grape 11 says. They're generally absolute
Saints to their Pokémon, especially James.
AB370A1D says the trio could have probably caught Pikachu had
Giovanni just funded them properly.
Heel of Wokeness says they're always persistent, they never

(32:17):
give up. Super Waninga says what can I
say? Best characters of all time in
my book. Just camaraderie personified.
Funniest and saddest characters of all time.
They're simple yet deep. A positive joy.
Perfection. Lego Blitz. 10 says Team Rocket

(32:41):
are the best anime villains ever, and bow ties are cool. 86
says they may be the bad guys, but they aren't bad guys.
They have been there for all of Ash's regional tournaments and
only ever really messing with him during the Indigo League.
They're actually the only ones to have essentially been there

(33:04):
for the entirety of Ash's journey, and I'm sure if they
ever stopped hounding Ash, you'dactually miss them on some
level. You'd definitely notice their
absence. Team Rocket for life.
So that's what some of you guys thought about Team Rocket.
And As for this week's podcast, the Team Rocket Takeover, it's

(33:28):
the end of the show. And you know what that means?
The time. Has come up.
It's more the best I know it. Greetings you Pokémon Pip Squee.
Huh? What are those guys doing here?
Pump it up to the Max. You know, we're testing rockets

(33:54):
and we fight for what is wrong. We're tired of our models, so we
thought we try a song, Jesse. James.
There's the speed of light prepared.
Flights meow. That's right.
I am. The handsome one.

(34:16):
I'm the gorgeous one. Lots of fun.
We get something wrong, but we keep rolling along.
We want to catch a Pikachu. We hope they do it soon and when
we do will be the new service. Well, thank you to Team Rocket

(34:49):
for taking over and singing us out on this week's podcast.
At least they saved you from me singing.
The time has come to say goodbye, at least for one week.
I'm sure I'll sing it again nextweek.
But thank you everyone for listening to the Peak Panels
podcast. This has been a Team Rocket
takeover. Don't forget to leave a review

(35:09):
and rating as that helps others discover the show.
And please share the episode with a friend, family member,
Team Rocket member, anyone who you think might enjoy the Pika
Pals podcast. You can find out information
