Speaker 1 (00:00):
Every day there are going to be choices that in
the moment, I want to operate out of the flesh.
I want to respond in a certain way or do
something that feels better to me in terms of how
I respond to somebody, or I want to win the
argument or whatever, or I choose to trust in the
empowerment of the Spirit to walk in a way that
will honor him.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
And then whenever I feel the friction in my heart
that there's one thing I want to do and there's
another option of maybe something I should do, that's the
question I have to ask myself. Am I arguing or
pushing for my rights? Or am I asking the Lord
instead of my right? Is this where you want me
to stand? And is this what you want me to carry?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
My favorite verse in the entire Bible, for since I
was in college, this has been my favorite verse. Galatians
five to one says that it is for freedom that
we have been set free. Therefore, stand firm and don't
be subject again into a yoke of slavery. So that's
my favorite verse. That verse leads into this whole chapter

(00:58):
about walking by the spirit and not walking by the flesh,
about this daily choice we have to make to choose
the things that will honor God in our life and
trusting in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to do
those things, but then also simultaneously denying our flesh's continuous
desire to walk in a particular direction or pursue certain
things that are going to produce things that are contrary

(01:21):
to what it means to walk by the Spirit. So
there is this choice that we're having to make, just
like Jesus did on his way to the cross, to
bear the burden of actually carrying his own cross to
his crucifixion, and we are instructed in a way to
do the same, to daily take up our cross and
follow him. There's this denying, and then there's this choosing

(01:44):
to walk in a different direction that will honor God.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
This to me is a daily decision.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
It's not like a once in a lifetime I'm gonna
follow God.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
There you have it. No, it's every day.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
There are going to be choices that in the moment
I want to operate out of the flesh. I want
to respond in a certain way or do something that
feels better to me in terms of how I respond
to somebody, or I want to win the argument or whatever,
or I choose to trust in the empowerment of the
spirit to walk in a way that will honor him.
So I want to talk about that just a little

(02:15):
bit and sort of personalize this, you know, Jesus carrying
his cross and what it means now as followers of
Jesus to deny ourselves and take up our cross on
a daily basis. What does that look like for you all?
How are you seeing it outworked in your life as
to what walking by the spirit means and denying the flesh?
And then what are the benefits that you're seeing that

(02:36):
come to your life and your relationships as a result
of that choice.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
You know, I think if you just broke it down,
just super simple, in your daily choices of wanting your
own way. You know something doesn't feel good, you know,
kick it to the curve.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
You know, all those choices that we make during the day.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
If I take that moment to decide to act by
the flesh or say something snappy or do, I always
regret it.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
It comes with pain.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
And I noticed that the longer that I live, if
I have if I make a mental note, Okay, I
could choose this, or I could choose this.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
And I choose the bad one.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
There's always regret, there's always a kick in the pants
from it in my own personal life, you know. And
I think that when we choose to follow Christ, we
choose daily, we choose every to make every moment count
somehow to bring glory, like you were talking so beautifully

(03:41):
about glorifying God in our actions and our deed and
our service and everything that we do. And I think
taking up your cross and following Him is just a
change of your perspective, a change of your plans, a change.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
When I've decided to follow Christ, I.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Am going to choose to do it called me to do,
not just my own fleshly desires.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, right, And that denial, that denial can be hard
because it could be things that obviously are appeasing to
your flesh, but it can also be things that are
worthy goals, but maybe in a certain season of life
that's not where the Lord has asked you to invest
your time and your energy and effort. We were talking
about that just a little bit. And so it's a
denial of maybe what are worthy, but just not right now.

(04:26):
They're not for right now, They're not for the season.
So you deny that in order to honor what the
Holy Spirit is has called you to in that particular season.
What about you, Chrissy, I think you know.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I think as you're talking, I was thinking about the
right that Jesus Christ had to say, I don't have
to do this. Yeah, this is not my problem, and
it's not because it was so not his prom Yeah,
and I or I have the right if I'm going
to die, I have the right to not have to

(04:55):
do it this way. Yeah, And that's what challenges me.
I'll know. Forget years ago I called a pastor's wife,
not my mom, was someone else, and her husband had
some similarities to my husband and whatever I called to
ask her opinion about. She just listened to me, she said,
I was very sweet, and then she said, what I

(05:19):
hear you saying is that you have the right to
have this go this certain way, and that you have
the right to have this operate in this order, and
that you have the right to be understood about this topic.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
And she just kind of went down the list, and
I was like.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
Yeah, yeah, exactly, and then she just kept going through
this list of things and then she said, and it
sounds to me like it's the same right that Jesus
had not to die.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
And I was like, wait a minute, you turn that
on you turn that around on me.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, But I think that's the question I have to
ask myself, Am I not willing to take up this
because I'm telling myself that it's my right? And if
that's the question or the answer that I'm giving myself,
then that's not what this decision is made off of.

(06:13):
It is it is this the cross that is in
my vicinity, that is right now mine to carry, simply
because it's mine to carry in this season. So I
have to ask myself that a lot. Is this my
decision being made out of what I want right now?
And there's nothing wrong with that, But when I compare

(06:33):
that to am I demanding my own rights? And what
else may God be requiring of me in the season?
There are very marked times where I have even in ministry.
I know at our church, have been a few seasons.
I'll never forget a sermon that a pastor preached and
he said, he said, I know you have the right

(06:55):
to change. And I think he was talking about a
variety of things to change ministry, to change areas, service,
to change churches, to have this he said, but have
you inquired of the Lord as to where he would
have you to stand? And sometimes the place where God
is asking you to stand, to be still, to be
faithful is about you staying put and staying in that

(07:15):
position because he knows something. Later down the line, he said,
have you ever been to a grocery store line and
you're watching the lines?

Speaker 3 (07:23):
You know, it's like which line should I be in? Yeah?
I know?

Speaker 2 (07:27):
And then the thing is is then you move to
the one that's moving faster. Then as soon as you move,
they'd have to have a problem, right, And in his
statement in the sermon was you're thinking, I have the
right to get out of line as soon as possible.
So you're negotiating what works the most simplest and easiest
for you, And it said, and sometimes the best thing

(07:49):
for you to do is to ask the Lord where
has he placed you to stand? Because that line is
the one you need to be in. And we do
a lot of negotiating and moving of things around to
get what we think is our right instead of asking, no,
where do you want me to stand? And ultimately that's
what Jesus decided to do. I have the right to
do this differently. But Godfather, God, what do you want

(08:11):
me to pick up? What do you want me to do?
How do you want me to stand? And that's what
it means to me, honestly a lot of times with
my marriage, a lot of times with my children, often
in ministry. And then whenever I feel the friction in
my heart that there's one thing I want to do
and there's another option of maybe something I should do,

(08:31):
that's the question I have to ask myself. Am I
arguing or pushing for my rights? Or am I asking
the Lord instead of my right? Is this where you
want me to stand? And is this what you want
me to carry? And then letting his answer in the
conviction of the Holy Spirit guide.

Speaker 6 (08:46):
And that's like counterculture too, because culture is all about well,
my right, I deserve this is me Like you know
why I deserve my husband to do this, or I
deserve my child to go here.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
We're all about that.

Speaker 6 (08:58):
And so it is a culture shift, even a counterculture
of what the world would tell you deserve or you're owed,
and it's the realization of like I just remember, even
coming here this morning, I was praying and I just
begin to weep because I said God, I'm so undeserving,
And it's like the realization that I'm not owed anything
more than what You've already given me, and so I

(09:20):
can I'm here on earth to extend you. I'm not
here because I'm going to gather more to myself. I'm
here for him. And I think there is that realization
of God, I just want to do what You've called
me to do, And there is that alle moment of going,
I'm really striving for what I feel owed or my
right to it, and I've got to rekill that and

(09:43):
put it on the cross and go, that's not why
I'm here. I'm not here to win the argument or
I'm not here to do those things. And you were right,
like it's not always this great divide of the red
sea of right and wrong.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Sometimes it's good in God.

Speaker 6 (09:57):
And it's like that's a really good decision, you know,
Like you can have these options where it's like which
school should my kids go to? Or man, what job
should I take? And there's not a right and wrong.
They're both a great job. There's one that's a good job,
but there's one that's a god opportunity for you. And
it's allowing God to really redirect in every moment, going God,

(10:18):
which ones you and where are you calling?

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Like, I love how you said that. Where am I
going to stand it?

Speaker 6 (10:22):
Because you never know on the end of that line,
the clerk is the one that you needed to smile at,
like we talked about earlier this week, that's the one
he's called you to serve today, and you're too busy
negotiating with him on the fastest way out when he's like, actually,
I just need you to serve your way out, and
I just think it's really I don't know, I'm processing
as you said that, it just kind of struck my heart.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
I'm like, wow, that's awesome.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
It's a counterculture moment for how we need to act
and how we need to approach the life we're facing.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
This is the same God, this is the same Jesus
right who went away to pray. So I'm not saying
every now and then you don't need to. I mean,
serving looks like a lot of different things. And God,
Jesus sacrificing his life and taking up his cross. It
was just a decision point of what is God asking
me to do? And sometimes that meant let them jeer
at you while you carry your cross, and sometimes that

(11:10):
meant I'm going to actually go be by myself now.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
And I interrupting you because I'm actually so glad you
brought that up, because I think and I think there's
wisdom that can be shared from anybody here about this.
It can be very easy to hear this about the
denial of the flesh, taking up your cross and all
those things, and go too far, and go too far
where you're actually being abusive toward yourself or allowing other

(11:35):
people to take.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Advantage of you. Again self denial, that's right.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
So what is the balance where we make sure that, yes,
we are living in a way that is taking up
our cross and honoring God with our lives. And of
course that's going to mean denying the flesh in certain occasions,
but not going so far where we are literally putting
ourselves in it, either emotionally or physically abusive situations and

(11:59):
calling that being spirit.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I probably wrestle with the justification. Is this my right?
I think we all would do that, But we have.

Speaker 7 (12:08):
To protect, you know, our heart because it's the things
that we put in our heart. You know, the Bible
says to guard your heart with all diligence for out
of it flows the issues of life, and it's how
we approach life many times. Is it's the attitudes of
the heart, the unforgiveness of the heart that I want
to be right, attitudes better than you, attitude I don't

(12:29):
need to, you know, take what you're giving me. I
think when we begin to start thinking about what we're
thinking about and what we're dwelling on and what we're
allowing to go into us has a lot to do
with what's going to come out of us and how
we feel justified about things. And so I have a
real fear of God. I mean, I have a healthy

(12:51):
fear of God. So when I do things that I
know aren't pleasing to God, I mean I'm like, okay, God,
I am so because I know that's not going to
come out right, that's not going to serve me or
anyone else, you know, And so I'll go back and
I'll repent.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
You know. But I think having.

Speaker 7 (13:12):
A healthy perspective of God and what pleases God is
huge as well. But I've just found out that I
am better when I'm guarding my heart, when I'm guarding
my thoughts, when I'm staying on it. That's something that
I try to work on a lot, is like I'm
not thinking all these thoughts at the same time that

(13:33):
I'm facing this difficulty, you know, I'm trying to rectify
it in my mind, and that's not right.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Can't do that. That's not going to serve you, you know.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
And I'm just trying to guard my heart so that
I don't just spill out of my mouth or act
out of my flesh or you know. So I think
that's a real key in take picking up your cross
every day. It's an everyday thing, like, Wow, that thought's
not really pleasing to God. That wouldn't be something that
I should really be moving towards, you know. So that's

(14:04):
kind of how I try to temper myself. Not that
I am at all perfect. I definitely go and repent
all the time. But I think that's one of the
things that I really try to do every day, is
just to guard what I allow, in what the thoughts
I allow the you know, being forgiveness

Speaker 4 (14:23):
Taking up your cross is also taking up his humility
and his love and his grace towards other, and his
peace and his all the characteristics of what Jesus, who
he was
