Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, So get this living vampires, not like the Bela
Lugosi kind, right, but actual people. Yeah, the whole community.
And you know, I'm all about a good deep dive.
So we're cracking open this book, The Complete Vampire Sanguinomicon
okay by Father Sebastian. Interesting even the title sounds like

(00:23):
a lost horror class.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, yeah it does.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
But this is serious stuff. Apparently we're talking actual practices, philosophy,
the whole nine yards. Wow, and get this. Check this out.
It's got a forward by someone named Konstantinos. Really, this
has layers.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
People, That's why.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
You know.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
What really struck me right off the bat was the
way this book is structured. It's divided into three distinct sections, right,
uber floraf uber Jahira and uber kalme uber okay, which
translate to the vampire perspectives coming forth by day and
coming forth by night, coming.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Forth by day, coming forth by night. It's like levels
of initiation almost when you say.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Right, yeah, like some kind of secret society and and
that uber thing too.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Yeah, it's very modern, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, Like Father Sebastian is trying to bridge the gap
between this ancient gothic vampire image, right, and like our
modern world using language that's a little more well.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Now, it's very now is And speaking of now, I
think it's important, you know, for our listener just to
be super clear here. Yeah, when we say living vampires,
we're not talking about supernatural creatures of the night. You know.
This is about a community of individuals who identify as vampires. Yeah, right, exactly,
and practice certain let's call them alternative lifestyles.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Exactly, and Sebastian's Sayguen, I'm a con. It focuses on
real people who, for whatever reason, right, they have this
genuine need to consume small amounts of human blood.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
They call it sanguine feeding.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Sanguine feeding.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, And before you think we're you know, diving into
some horror movie trope here, right, it's important to understand
that within this community they stress ethical sourcing above all else.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Okay, So how does that work? Are we talking like
blood drives but with more capes?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Well not quite, although I love that visual Yeah, but
the sanguinomicon it really stresses like informed consents, okay, and
safe practices like those are paramount.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Gotcha, I gotcha.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
They've got guidelines for blood testing hygiene, like the whole
nine yards. It's taken very seriously, you know.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
So it's it's not just a physical act of consuming blood.
It's about the intention, the respect involved.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
And speaking of intention, the sanguinamicon takes a turn into
even more fascinating territory, oh, with the concept of psychic vampires.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Psychic vampires.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Yeah, and they get their energy not from blood, okay,
but from emotions. Interesting connections.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Wow. See this is where those titles coming forth by day,
coming forth by night become especially interesting.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
It suggests that these individuals, whether you know they're sanguine
or psychic vampires, right, have to navigate you know, both
the daytime normal world right, right, but also their own
more shall we say unconventional.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Needs a constant balancing act.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
You've got your job, your relationships, your daily grind, and
then this whole other side to your identity.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Right.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
It makes you wonder how they reconcile those two worlds.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
And how do the people in their lives react to it, Like,
do they have to keep it a secret? Are their
support groups for this kind of thing?

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Right? Imagine trying to explain that to your grandma. Oh god, no, Nan,
it's not a phase.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
It's a lifestyle.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
But on a more serious note, Okay, the book suggests
that this isn't just you know, some quirky lifestyle choice.
It hints at a deeper philosophy gal layer, okay, to
this whole living vampire thing.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Interesting, it's like they're taking this ancient archetype, you know,
this creature of darkness and desire, and infusing it with
like a quest for something more. Honestly, it's kind of
giving dot intellectual vampire, which I never thought i'd say
out loud.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Right, It's like a whole secret society of knowledge seekers.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Right.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
But then that begs the question, if it's about gnosis
about truth, why choose the vampire identity at all?

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Why not just call themselves truth seekers or something?

Speaker 2 (04:32):
You know, that's the million dollar question, isn't it?

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Right?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Maybe the vampire archetype, for all its darkness, you know,
it also embodies a certain kind of power, Okay, a
power that maybe resonates with them, helps them own their differences.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah. I like that. It's about owning your power, even
if it's unconventional, even if it makes other people uncomfortable,
it's about saying this is who I am and I'm
not afraid.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Of it exactly. And that ties into some something else
that really struck me about the Sanguinomicon, particularly an uber Jahira.
There's this whole discussion about the challenges of like navigating
a world that isn't quite set up for their unique needs.
They call it the day walker dilemma.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
The day walker dilemma. Well, I'm already hooked. Tell me more.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Okay, So imagine this. You're a living vampire, right, Okay,
you have a nine to five job, maybe you're a barista,
a teacher who knows right, right, but you also have
this need for let's just say, alternative energy sources. How
do you balance those two worlds?

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Do you imagine, listener, like, balancing your nine to five
job with the need to well obtain energy in shall
we say, unconventional ways? Yeah, talk about a bad case
of the Monday's right.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
And then and then there are the social implications too,
like dating, for instance, Oh god, what do you tell
your date hey, by the way, I identify as a vampire?
Or family gatherings? No, no, ann, Carol, this isn't great.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Okay, Now I'm picturing Thanksgiving dinner with the in laws
and oh boy, yeah, things could get awkward pretty fast.
It's a lot, yeah, But seriously, it raises a really
fascinating question. I think, how much of yourself do you
reveal and.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
To whom exactly exactly? And how much do you have
to like suppress a part of yourself, you know, to
fit in to avoid judgment. And the seguin Amicon doesn't
offer any easy answers, but it does acknowledge the very
real struggles that come with, you know, living this kind
of dual existence.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
It's like they're constantly code switching, right, but instead of
between languages, it's between entire identities, the lundane world, right,
and the well the vampire.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
World, and finding ways to like bridge that gap, you know,
to build bridges instead of walls. And you know, when
you think about it, we all have different ways of
like recharging our batteries, so to speak. Some people need solitude,
others crave social interaction. Maybe psychic vampires are just on
the more extreme of that spectrum.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
It's like, you know that friend who always leaves you
feeling drained after a conversation, yes, oh my god, versus
that other friend who just like energizes you. Yeah, like
they're tapping into different kinds of energy.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Right, absolutely, absolutely, and maybe the living vampire community, by
explicitly acknowledging these different needs, you.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Know, and finding ways to address them ethically, can teach
us something about our own relationships and how we interact
with the world around us, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
It really is like we're all part of this like
invisible energy exchange, aren't we, Whether we realize it or not.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
It's true.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Some people drain you, some people energize you. It's pretty
wild when you actually stop and think about it, it is.
But going back to the Sanguinomicon for a second, okay,
and specifically this whole idea of gnosis, it seems like
there's a real like hunger for knowledge within this community. Absolutely,
like they're not just accepting this traditional vampire label at

(07:58):
face value, you know, they're digging deeper.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah, And that's what I find so fascinating about it,
you know.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Because on the one hand, you have this like ancient mythology,
you have this whole visual language of fangs and darkness
and eternal life and all.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
That, right, right, it's very dramatic, it is.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
But then you have these real people, right, living breathing
individuals who are trying to reconcile those images with their
own lived experience, trying to find meaning and truth within
a framework that's often associated with well, the opposite of truth.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Like they're reclaiming the narrative, yes, rewriting the script exactly.
And this Dmitri character, with his quest for nosis, he's
like the embodiment of that.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
He really is.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
But it's also kind of a paradox, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
What's that?

Speaker 1 (08:44):
I mean, if you're trying to break free from stereotypes,
why choose an identity that's already so heavily laden with symbolism?

Speaker 2 (08:51):
That is the million dollar question, isn't it? And I
don't pretend to have a definitive answer or anything, but maybe,
just maybe it's because the vampire archetype is so powerful, right, Okay,
so deeply ingrained in our collective imagination that it becomes
like a potent vehicle for transformation.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
I like where you're going with this. It's like they're
taking something that's traditionally seen as dark and dangerous and saying,
we're going to redefine what this means. Yes, we're going
to infuse it with our own values, our own search
for knowledge and authenticity.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Exactly. It's like taking back control of the narrative, you know.
And in a way, isn't that something we all strive for,
really totally, to define ourselves on our own terms, rather
than letting society dictate who we should be.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Absolutely, and maybe, just maybe, this deep dive into the
world of living vampires, as unexpected as it was, can
teach us a thing or two about embracing our own complexities,
about challenging assumptions by finding our own unique path, you know,
to truth and self discovery.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Well said, Well said? And on that note, I think
we'll leave our listener with this final provocative thought. If
you could rewrite the rules of any archetype, any myth,
any stereotype, what would it be and how would you
infuse it with your own personal quest for truth and meaning?
Something to ponder.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Indeed, this has been quite a deep dive listeners into
a world I never expected, frankly, but until next time,
keep those brains buzzing and those perspectives shifting.
