Die Pizza kommt aus der italienischen Stadt Neapel. Es gibt sie seit dem 17. Jahrhundert. Der Name kommt von dem Wort Pita. Im 19. Jahrhundert besuchte Königin Margherita di Savoia die Stadt. Für sie wurde eine Pizza mit den Farben der italienischen Flagge gebacken. Daher kommen auf eine traditionelle Pizza Margherita rote Tomaten, weißer Mozzarella und grünes Basilikum. Der Verband Echter Neapolitanischer Pizzen sagt heute genau, wie eine Pizza sein muss. Er bestimmt jedes Jahr, welches Restaurant die beste Pizza macht.
