Unity, strategy, and navigating complex global shifts. The Trotskyist movement is one of the few revolutionary socialist currents that has survived from the crucial period of the Russian Revolution, the British miners strike of 1926, the Chinese revolution and the rise of fascism.

This podcast deep-dive shows how and why Trotsky assembled those whose revolutionary strategies defended the heritage of the Russian revolution, and the journey of those socialists through the following decades. The struggle in Yugoslavia, China, and Vietnam forced a rethink that the Stalinist parties could not break with Moscow, and it developed major tensions, and sectarianism, within the perspectives of the Fourth International. In this episode, you’ll hear the Fourth International's history offers several key lessons for modern progressive movements:

* Maintain principled clarity while seeking unity: Balance ideological principles with the need to build broader coalitions.

* Embrace true internationalism: Recognise the global interconnectedness of struggles and support anti-imperialist movements across borders.

* Be adaptable in strategy: Be willing to reassess and modify approaches as political landscapes change, avoiding rigid dogmatism.

* Practice active solidarity: Provide concrete support to liberation movements, not just symbolic statements.

* Avoid sectarianism: Focus on building movements rather than internal feuding or creating divisions within the left.

* Learn from historical experiences: Study past successes and failures to avoid repeating mistakes and develop more effective organizing strategies.

The core takeaway is that effective progressive movements require a delicate balance between principled commitment and strategic flexibility, always maintaining an internationalist perspective.Note: free podcasts on Substack are supported by advertising.
