In this episode, we discuss the powerful themes explored in the book Against White Feminism by Rafia Zakaria.
We reflect on what it means to confront white feminism, by discussing its definition and the cultural forces that shape how it's experienced and understood around the world. We talk about cultural differences between feminism in different countries, and discuss how contemporary Asian feminism is in many ways more progressive and radical than Western feminism.
We also talk about the shocking historical and cultural context behind why so much of contemporary Western feminism is about sexual empowerment. And we explore the difficult but necessary conversations around privilege and the white saviour complex that often emerges when white women position themselves as rescuers while overlooking both their own struggles, and the needs of non-white women.
We also reflect on how Western media depicts white women and non-white women’s experiences differently, and discuss if it's necessary to engage some of the foundational yet controversial feminist texts that have shaped mainstream white feminism.
We also discuss Western feminism’s overemphasis on individuality and why we don’t agree with encouraging women to get ahead for ourselves at the expense of others, rather than promoting solidarity and sisterhood, which is the only way we can really make important feminist advances.
Through this episode, we're inviting you all to think about how we can work together to build an inclusive feminism that leaves no one behind x
