Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wow, Jeers, Kristin Balboni, and Sharon Thors love it with
your sideline pass.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Well in the sideline Pass with Kristen and Sharon, your
sideline reporters. Sharon, we are going to get right into it.
I think we got to start with with what we
saw last week. So it was it was close and
the Panthers were down eight with I think about five
minutes left in the fourth quarter and then there was
an interception. But we were just saying a little bit
(00:31):
off air that it really felt like the entire time
that the Panthers were not out of it and they
could come back and won that game, at least until
that interception.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Absolutely absolutely down eight at that point, could have gone
in and tied it with a two point conversion or
at you know, I best set yourself up for a
game winning field goal if you could get a defensive stop.
So that was the exciting part of it, especially with
the injuries that we were dealing with on the offensive line.
I mean, those guys came in and just played lights
out and so you felt like, Okay, well we're still
in this. But fortunately that interception, Yeah, that was a backbreaker.
(01:03):
And Andy Dalton certainly owned that mistake, and which which
is just a bummer because they had played really well
up until that point and then the game just you know,
sort of got away from us there at the very
end with that other pick six. But yeah, the Panthers
were still in it in spite of everything that they
had been dealing with on both sides of the football,
the injury, so that that was one thing to really
hang your hat on this past week and something that
(01:25):
gives you some optimism that and as I mentioned that,
the play of the guys on the offensive line with
Brady Christiansen and yash and Iemen coming in for our
injury guys Austin Corbett and Taylor Moden, I mean, no
sacks allowed. They paved the way for an excellent running
game with another ninety two yard effort by Cuba Hubbard.
So those things are things that you can build on
and take from as positives out of that.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Game, for sure. And I think it's I don't want
to say that I came off a little harshly, but
I do. I think you made such a good point.
It's not the interception that put us out of the game,
it was just everything that led up to it, and
then that just felt like a turning point because obviously
you were within striking distance right there. But as you said, Sharon,
that offense looked really, really good for most of the game.
(02:09):
What we do need to talk about, though, is the defense,
and those injuries are just piling up, and we know
that Dave Canalis wants to be a team that can
stop the run, and unfortunately right now we just haven't
been seeing it.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, and it starts, you know, with the loss of
Derek Brown up front. We all knew that that was
going to be a tough one. He's such a run
stuffer and to such the tone on that line, So
without him up there, and it has just been the trickle
down effect. Then without Shaq Thompson, Josie Jewel and it linebacker,
and then you were with Cini, Davian Clowney and all
the way on back in the secondary without Jordan Fuller.
So it's just been a war of attrition here with
(02:42):
with the injuries, and it's really just caught up with
them defensively, and when you can't stop the run, that
just opens up everything else in the past, and given
when you have a guy like Kirk Cousins back there,
who had thrown five hundred and nine passe yards a
week before that. It's tough to slow them down with
those dangerous, dangerous weapons they have and the running attack
the head with Ali Year and Jon Robinson. It's just
to sort of pick your poison with those guys. So yeah,
(03:04):
that's something that has just got to get tightened up
this week. It's got to get tightened up because the
Commanders have an excellent rushing attack as well with three
really talented backs, So I know that the defense they're
going to be working hard on that all week to
try to show up what has been the problem. And
I think that's the tough thing to like point to.
It's like, what exactly is the problem? And I think
(03:25):
a lot of it stems from you don't have a
rush up front either. We haven't been able to set
the edges. I think that's been a real difficulty for
us all season long. It's not being able to set
the edge and contain guys and keep them where they
need to be in the backfield or just you know,
let them get a yard or do something like that.
But we've been letting guys get around the edge and
they're not being not being able to get a pass
rush has really caused us some issues.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Completely agree, you know, And I asked Dave Canals. We
were talking to him yesterday for the TV show, and
you know, we just said, like what it like. You said,
how do you get it done? How do you how
can you stop the run? Knowing that what knowing what
we know with the injuries that are there, And he said,
his big thing is communication. And you know, Sharon, I
saw that on the sideline this past weekend since I
(04:09):
was the home sideline reporter game was at home. And
the thing that I thought was really heartening is that
so we know that we've talked about this for several
weeks now, Trevin Wallace, the rookie, has been asked to
step up in this really important role. With Josie Jewel
not there. He's leading all communications. He's a green dot.
And one thing I thought was so neat and obviously
that's a huge position for the rookie in addition to
(04:31):
learning how to play right, not only are you a starter,
you're telling everyone what to do each play. The one
thing I thought was really cool in terms of building
that communication is that when the offense was on the field,
the entire defense would just get around that inside linebacker
or and they were talking and it was not No
one was pointing fingers, no one was. They were just
(04:52):
working on their communication, not only just on the field,
but also often. I heard jac Horn telling Trevin Wallace
and that whole he said, he said, just communicate, communicate, communicate.
He said, you cannot talk to us too much. So
he said, just over communicate. If you think that you're
talking to us too much, trust me, you're not. And
you'd love to see that, you know, especially from a
(05:12):
guy like JC Horn, who's really kind of stepping into
this role of a veteran and wants to become this
vocal leader. And so you know, we saw that from
guys like I saw that from guys like Xavier Woods
down there, Mike Jackson, they were talking to him. And
then you have your Ashawn Robinson. So it was coming
from from all levels of the field defensively, and they
just were talking so much. And although we may not
(05:36):
have seen that payoff and the way they wanted it
to on Sunday against the Falcons, shar and you have
to think that that bodes well. You know, Trevin Wallace
and those guys who haven't played a lot are only
getting more experienced.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Absolutely definitely, and you can see it with Trevin. I
mean he's gotten better in every single game and all
the guys around him, and yeah, I mean it takes time,
Like I know that. Asiaa Vero said that in the
preseason that that middle linebackers is such a difficult spot
to learn for anybody, much less a rookie coming and
because of the mental load that goes along with the
physical load. So he's been learning since day one. They
(06:11):
like everything about him, and now he's gotten steadily better
every week and it's going to only continue, like you said,
and as he develops more of a chemistry, more of
a rapport with those guys on the back end and
the guys on the front line, it's going to pay off.
And right now we're having to, you know, take our
lumps a little bit because he is a rookie and
learning and they're all trying to get that communication down path.
But like you said, with the way that they're all
talking to each other and nobody is nobody's pointing fingers,
(06:34):
nobody's blaming anybody anything like that, they realize the situation
that they're in and they just have to do what
they can do. Everybody do their job to try to
make this defense work. So hopefully you'll see some continued
improvement against Washington this weekend, because that's certainly gonna be
a tough offense to try to slow down. So this
defense definitely needs to really hone in on the things
that they have not been doing correctly and try to
(06:56):
get those things fixed headed into this game.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, for sure. And so when we look at the offense,
we touched on it a little bit, but you know,
Trevon Wallace is a guy on the defense that is
a rookie that has been asked to step up. But
what about the young guys on offense. Sharon so your
Xavier league at he had his second touchdown, He did
the dollar Bill celebration again, the riding of the horse,
which is amazing. Jalen Cocher had another good game, and
(07:19):
Jatavian Sanders, who we are actually talking to in just
a little bit, also really shined. And you know, that
was something that we also talked about with Dave Canalis
yesterday of just what those guys are doing so well
in the learning curve that they have to be on.
You know, it's bigger for a rookie than anyone else,
this learning curve coming into the league, and those guys
(07:41):
are really starting to.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Shine absolutely, and I think that was it was really
fun to watch Jalen Coker because he's a guy that
they were really high on in the preseason and you know,
wanted to try to stash him away if they could
and not let him get away from this team, which
they were successful in doing, thankfully, because he's a guy
that is he's a big talk guy, and what he
was able to do at holy Cross, you know, for
(08:02):
all four seasons was amazing. Steve smith, our own Smithy,
said it coming into the draft that he was the
best route runner in the draft, and he's lived up
to that because the game has not looked too big
for him. A lot of times you see rookies go
out there and sort of get you know, wide, like,
oh my gosh, the game's so fast. He's just so
smooth out there and it's just been able to just
catch everything that comes his way and is running great
(08:23):
routes and I think he's doing an absolutely tremendous job.
And JT. Sanders had the best game of his young career,
so far last week with the five catches on seven
targets forty nine years I think he had, so he was.
He played much better last week than he did the
week before that, and exivierly get I mean, what can
you say about him? He's just gotten better and better
every week too, and does not look like a rookie
(08:45):
out there right now. So if those guys can keep
on improving, keep on getting better, keep on getting more
comfortable in this offense, that really bodes well for them.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Yeah, I'm glad that you said that about Jalen Cooker
playing smooth because I think that's you know, if you
were listening to our game on the radio, or if
you don't get to see him down there but on
the sidelines, that's exactly the word that I would use
for him. He just kind of very fluid, and it
doesn't like one of those guys that you see him
running and it doesn't look like he's expending all that
much effort. Yes, right, if he's not funny where it's
(09:15):
like you're as whereas like your Xavier Legot, you can
tell he's pumping, I mean, and he's huge, right, And
so it's just interesting to see all these different guys
in their approach and you need and you know, and
then Deantay Johnson's another type of receiver, Adam Feelin. It's
so interesting to see, especially as you develop this receiving corps,
all these guys kind of fit into their roles and
(09:36):
address a need and you know, give Andy Dalton a
weapon that that you know, frankly gives him so many options. Yeah.
And speaking of options, though, you just told me before
we started this that we have some good news on
another rookie, right yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, running back Jonathan Brooks practice for the first time
on Wednesday, which is very exciting. He of course, has
been coming off of a torn ACL severed back in
college at Texas last season, so they've been bringing him
along very slowly because then an ACL injury is not
easy to come back from. You know, nine months is
generally the absolute earliest you want to come back from that,
So for them to be able to stretch it farther
(10:12):
than that is great. So they're going to get him
up and running, and he's got that that twenty one
day window to be activated to the roster. But that's
it's very exciting to see him out there because he's
going to be able to add so much to this offense,
even though right now the running game thankfully is clicking
pretty well, led by Chuba Hubbard, who had another outstanding
eff last week.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah, I think that'll be interesting. Yeah, he's what the
top two in rushing yards in the NFL, I think, right.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Yeah, I got I think four hundred eighty five on
the season, and you had ninety two again last week.
So this is the fourth week in a row where
he's almost hit one hundred yards. He had to over
one hundred to two week four weeks and three weeks ago,
and then then he had the ninety seven and then
follow it up with ninety two this past week. So
he's just been a machine out there with running the
football and just powerful and just you know, head down,
(10:59):
just going to write up the gut and just getting
you that extra yard every time. So Cuba has been
really holding down the fort with that run game. And
of course Miles Sanders thrown in the mix as well,
doing what he does. And that's the thing Tube actually
spoke about that this week. That and when you throw
Raheem Blackshare into the mix. Two and then now Jonathan Brooks,
you got four guys who all do very different things
out there on the field. They all bring some different
(11:19):
talent to the running game. And Cuba is joking around
and saying, now, I wish I could get all four
of us out there. At the same time, he said,
I've been begging for a package to get all four
of us out there. But you know, he said, unless
your army is probably not gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
That's great. Yes, So it'll be interesting to see, like
you said, with Cuba is having such a great season,
Miles standers, we see him down there and kind of
you know, the like when you need a yard or
with when we're in the red zone. And so I
wonder how they'll use Jonathan Brooks, Sharon, And that's what
I want to you know, do you try to get
like the two headed monster like D'Angelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.
(11:56):
Do you just have him? Of course, like you said,
he's going to be working himself back from a very
serious injury, but they want to see him in games.
So do you give the ball to Cuba all the
time and then you bring him in just here and there.
I'll be interested to see. But we know that Dave
Canalis wants to run the ball as much as possible,
So it'll be interesting to see, especially because I know
(12:18):
this front office and this coaching staff is very very
high on Jonathan Brooks.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, he is a very talented young man and was
amazing at Texas last year, So to get him into
this lineup would would definitely be a plus. And Dave
Canalis has not given us any hint yet. He was
asked on Monday about Hey, how are you going to
use him? He's like, yeah, we'll cross that bridge and
we come to it kind of thing. So exactly, he's
not divulging any secrets quite yet. But I would love
(12:43):
to see him and Chewba out on the field at
the same time, like you said, and have a one
two punch kind of thing, like back in the day
when we had double trouble with Stewie and d'ango Williams.
So to get the two of them, because they're similar
type runners in the sense that they're both power backs
and things like that, so it would be great to
get them both that there. But at at any point
to be able to mix him in with Miles and
(13:04):
Cuba would just it's just going to be awesome to see.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, it could be an embarrassment of riches right there,
which exactly certainly we would like to see. All right,
let's talk about the commanders. You have the best scouting
reports for my money every single week to me, I mean,
is the story just Jane Daniels. Jane Daniels. Jane Daniels.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Well, definitely probably the number one guy you're going to
be focusing in on it at this point, rolling in
because man alive is he just been absolutely outstanding with
the amount of yards he's putting them, not only through
the air, but also on the ground because he is
the second highest ranked quarterback in the league in terms
of rushing yards behind Lamar Jackson, which is pretty outstanding company.
(13:45):
So he's Yeah, he's been able to come in and
just absolutely set the world on fire here as a
rookie quarterback, and no one would have thought, I think
that they would that he would have them at four
and two and leading the NFC East. So he's been
able to just make really good decisions, developed a phenomenal
rapport with Terry McLaurin, their number one receiver of course,
who's who's been solid for years now. He's had four
(14:07):
thousand yard seasons, so and it's well on his way
to another one now. So the Jalen Daniels it all
definitely starts with him, But then you throw in the
guys like Terry McLaurin and Christian McCaffrey's younger brother, rookie
Luke McCaffrey out there at receiver, which is sort of
fun to see. And then they've got a Chris Zacheris
with then that run game fifth in the league and
rushing yards are averaging over one hundred and fifty something
(14:27):
yards per game. They've got the three headed monster with
Brian Robinson, Austin Eckler who came over from the Chargers
this year, and m Jeremy McNichol. So between the three
of those guys, you've got, you know, the power back,
the downhill runner kind of guy. You got the scatback
kind of guy like Austin Eckler who's also a threat
through the air. So they've just they've come at you
in a hundred different ways offensively, and it's going to
(14:47):
be a load to try to slow those guys down.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yeah. So I was asking Dave Canalis yesterday what sticks
out to him about Jayden Daniels, and of course what
doesn't stick out, right, But he was just saying that
he can make all of his throat anywhere on the field,
so short yardage he can throw up a bomb like,
he can do all of it. And so there's really
there's really not much you can do to shut them down, right,
(15:10):
I mean, there's no weakness really speaking for a rookie
that you can really exploit in terms of the passing game.
You just have to be prepared for all of it.
And I thought that was high praise coming from a
guy like Dave Canalis. Now I was I was talking
to Thomas Davis. We were watching some film, and he
said that the Ravens did a really good job. Obviously
the Commander sauceet game to the Ravens, but they did
(15:31):
a really good job of kind of keeping him on
his toes. And one of the things that he said
they did so well was having like a big body
getting in his face and just really like getting in
his way and not letting him see down the field.
And so I said, well, who is the guy that
could do that on the Panthers? And he said, if J.
Davin Clowney is back and is healthy, he would be
(15:54):
the perfect guy.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
For that, oh absolutely, And you can see that because
I mean, I don't know how many people have seen
Jadevian Clownie of close and personal in real life. Man,
that is an imposing that is an imposing figure right there,
and he is fast and lean and strong and tall,
and he is just that. He's like a quarterback's worst nightmare.
So I'm sure Jane Daniels would love to have nothing
more than to have Jadevian on the sidelines again this week. Hopefully,
(16:17):
hopefully that will not be the case. But yeah, he's
the kind of guy that you want to intimidate Jade
Daniels and try to keep him in the pocket as
much as possible and force him to maybe just get
a little uncomfortable and make some Thursday he doesn't really
want to make. And definitely you want to try to
contain him because you let him out and you see
what he can do with those legs. So that it
would be great if we can get Clownie back out
(16:38):
there this week for sure.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And we'll see, you know, last week without him, we
talked to Dave Canos and he said, look, we're just
going to try to generate rush anyway we can, right
and that's not what you want to hear. So they
could certainly really use him back. So we'll see if
they can get consistent enough to be able to then
put extra pressure on Jaden Daniels. Certainly that is what
they're hoping for. Let's talk about that Washington defense, Sharon,
(17:02):
because there are a couple of guys. There are a
couple of guys that Panthers fans know very well, and
Frankie Luvu and Jeremy Chin.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Yeah, and boy, they are both thriving up there in Washington,
which great for them, but not so good for the
Panthers this way.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Because of them.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
It's like no, no, Yeah, Frankieluv is just having an
outstanding season. He's second on the team in tackles behind
Bobby Wagner, got three sacks on the year. Jeremy Chin
third and the team in tackle, So starting a safety
up there. So these are both guys the Panthers know
exactly what they are capable of, and I'm sure what
it would have loved to keep them around here in Carolina,
but they're thriving up there in Washington right now, and
(17:41):
they know this Panther's offense to some extent. I mean,
they know a lot of the players. Obviously it's a
new scheme, new coaching staff, but they're very familiar with
a lot of these players that they have, you know,
worked with for years here and even you know, like
Andy Dalton was here last year with both those guys,
so they know him. They know this offensive line, they
know a lot of you know, the quirks and things
(18:01):
about this this offense. So's it's going to be interesting
to see how they face up against this Panthers team.
But yeah, they are extremely integral important parts of that
Washington defense and this offense is going to be haven't
definitely be ready for them.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
So, Sharon, my final question is what are you going
to be looking for on the sidelines in Washington this week?
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Yeah, I think you touched on it earlier. It's that
communication on the defense that the defense is the thing
that everybody would point to as that that's the thing
that this team has got to get short up sooner
rather than later. And the offense I think can get
us where we need to be because Andy Dalton's playing well,
and those receivers and the guys that we were just
talking about have all stepped up. The offensive line has
not missed a beat in spite of the injury. So
(18:45):
it's on the defensive side of the ball. I want
to see how that communication is going, how it has
improved over the past couple of weeks, how they're looking
out there in terms of working together, because it's not
just the spoken communication, it's also that nonverbal communication that
you get from more connect to guys and know and
how they're going to move, which way are they going
to go, how they're going to react in this situation,
So that that nonverbal communication is also key that comes
(19:08):
with reps, and they've got more of those now. I'm
going to have another week under their belt this time
headed up into the game on Sunday, So I'm definitely
going to be looking to see how that communication is
going between Trebn and Wallas and the rest of that
defense and everybody on the defense because we've got some
moving parts and some new faces again, some more new
guys at linebacker and on the defensive line. So I'm
definitely going to be interested to see how all of
(19:30):
that meshes and how they flow out there on Sunday
for sure.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Well, sharing safe travels up there, and we're hoping for
a Panthers win and we'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Sounds great, Kristin.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
All right, I am here with tight end. JT. Sanders,
Thank you so much for joining me. How you doing today, Yes, ma'am,
I'm good.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
All right. So, first and foremost most importantly, your number
one ranked Longhorns are hosting the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend.
Are you going to have any time to get to watch?
Because obviously so, you guys will be on a flight
to Washington.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Oh yeah, I'm gonna have that WIFA on the plane
already on deck and at YouTube TV on deck, so
it's I'm definitely tuned in for show.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Are you gonna be do you and Jonathan Brooks watch like?
Will you be watching the games together? Do you each
have to be in your own little zone and do
your own thing? What's that like?
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (20:19):
I think we've being our on litt zones, you know
what I'm saying. We'd be watching on our phones, but
we definitely be like talking about it throughout the game
and stuff and so and then we be getting food
from the same place for the for the playing for
the vets and stuff, so we be talking about it.
There all we watching it and stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
So wait, where do you have to get food for
the vets this time? That's a time honored rookie tradition.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
It really just depends where they want it from. But
for the tight ends, I've been getting them luluse. It's
just a little chicken place right around the corner from
the facility. Go tap in if you I haven't already.
Some of the best wings I ever had in my life.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
So yeah, at least you get to get them somewhere.
That's good, right, Like, at least or not saying.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Oh yeah, I'm never I'm never gonna sit the most failure.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Never that I love I love it. What is it
like to be watching the Longhorns and not playing because
you have so many friends there?
Speaker 3 (21:06):
Yeah, it's good, it's great. Actually, you know what I'm saying.
Just going through the trials and tribulations with some of
the some of the young guys who are I see
now who are dominating? Just some names the name Anthony Hill,
Trey to Trey Wisner, Jaden Blue, even Arch when he
got in you know what I'm saying, John T. Cook,
DeAndre Moore, Autumn, God, that was my dog. So just
(21:28):
going out there, seeing them bawling, learning from learning from
us who are now in a professional level, and seeing
them going out there dominates. It's amazing.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
That is awesome. Do you hear from those guys to
I mean, I know you hear from them, But are
they like, Hey, what's it like in the NFL? What
are you guys just like chilling me?
Speaker 3 (21:47):
We really don't. If we do chop it up, they'd
be like they just asked me, what's really the main difference?
You know what I'm saying, because you know, like I
just say, like you got a lot more free time
because you don't got school no more. So you just
go to work and go home, take care of your
body free. But other than that, like we be chopping
it up on the game, playing two K or maddening
whatever we're doing.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
That's so interesting. So I was talking to Mike Jack
about that one day, about how when you leave school
and then you get to go and work and whatever,
that is like the coolest thing is that you're getting
paid and you don't have like I mean, you guys
have flash cards and study time and whatever. But like
you said, you get more free time. What is that like? Now?
Making that transition into the NFL and having that free time.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Honest, it's been good. You just got to be mature
with it because there there can be a lot of
things done that can that you can do in that
free time that will that will hurt you in the
long run, you know what I'm saying. Like, especially for me,
I knew what coming with more free times, and I
take care of my body more. I ain't do a
good job that in college, and that's something I feel
like I've I've gotten better at throughout my time being
(22:49):
in NFL. But honestly, it's just it's it's great just
be able to be clear headed, not having to worry
about this test after a hard day at practice, you
know what I'm saying, or this essay or this pay
I got a right days do by this certain time.
Just being able to be clear minded after a long
day work is probably the best thing about having a
free time.
