Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wow, Jeers, Kristin Balboni, and Sharon Thorst love it with
your sideline Pass.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Welcome to Sideline Pass with your Panther Sideline reporters Kristen
and Sharon and Sharon, it is a victory Monday.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
So happy victory Monday to you.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Oh same to you. And boy does it feel good?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
It sure does.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I'm obviously this is a podcast so no one can
see it, but I've got my Panther sweatshirt on. I
am fully reveling in this victory. I was on the
sidelines for this one since it was a home game.
But you know, I think what we saw as employees
and staff, and certainly what the fans saw was great.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
It was a great fourth quarter comeback.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
But I got to imagine, Sharon, it is nothing compared
to the way the players and this coaching staff felt.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Oh absolutely, I mean this is something that I mean,
they're out there busting their buds every single day, all day,
every day to get out there and win. So for them,
we're all excited about it, Yeah we won, but for
them it's got to be like a huge weight off
their shoulders. In addition to being exciting and fun, it's
like Okay, what we're doing can work. If we do
(01:10):
things that we're supposed to do, if we finish plays,
if we finish drives, we do all the stuff that
we practice and that we talk about, things come out
with a W at the end. And so they were
able to get that done yesterday, and I know that
that just feels so good for them in multiple ways.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Absolutely, So I thought we'd go through some of our
highlights of the game, and I think the first thing
that you and I would agree on is that this
win came with Bryce Young. So the previous win in
the season was with Andy Dalton, and so this was
a chance for Bryce in his fourth start this season.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
To come away with winning.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
He had some really great drives. He looked really confident.
We talked about that a lot in the broadcast. Jakes
alone saw it as well as what I saw on
the sidelines. So, Sharon, that has got to be very rewarding,
as we said, for this team and also for Bryce
as a as a player and as a person. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Absolutely, I mean, nobody likes to get benched, and so
when he lost his starting job after week two, you
know that that's no fun for anybody. He took it
in stride. He did not pout, He did not sit
on the sidelines and you know, sit by himself or
didn't engage. I mean, he did everything that he did
on a regular day, even when he was the starter.
So he worked, he learned, he watched, He learned things
(02:25):
from a different perspective. He saw the game from a
new angle, being on the sidelines, learning from Andy Dalton,
and he put all of that to use. I mean,
he did that last week against Denver, but looked so
much better this week, especially in the second half yesterday.
I think that was the difference. The first half was
you know, he had some stuff he'd probably like to
have back. But in the second half, I thought he
looked much more confident. And when you have success, then
(02:46):
that obviously builds that confidence. And so he was able
to go out there build on the things that he
had done well last week, get things cleaned up during
the week with his receivers. He had, you know, was
a week number two of being able to work with
these guys from a first team offense perspective. Same thing
with the with the offensive line. So to have all
of that fall into place, and he just looks much
more in control. Of the offense yesterday, he looked like
(03:08):
he was confident, he knew what he was doing and
knew where he was going with the football, and you know,
there were a few hiccups, obviously because he's still young,
he's still learning, But for the most part, I thought
he looked much different than he did in a week
one of this season.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I agree, And so one of the things that, of
course that we can talk about is he led that
game winning comeback and that was really impressive.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
So it was, what with about four and a.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Half minutes, four and a half minutes to play, three
and a half minutes to play in this game, and
they go up, you know, they get down the field
and ultimately culminates in that Shuba Hubbard the second touchdown
of the game for him. So that was incredibly validating
for that offense, but also then for the defense to
(03:53):
go back and stop the scenes from scoring that field goal.
It was just, you know, we hear that term complimentary
football all the time, and of course that's what all
teams want to play, complimentary football, defense, offense, special teams.
Everyone is doing well, that's what that means. Everyone's playing great.
But this was not just not just to win, and
like you said, there were some things throughout the first
(04:13):
three quarters that of course they are going to want
to clean up, and I'm sure Dave Knealis has plenty
of coaching points for that. But that fourth quarter, in
those last few minutes, the entire team came together to
really win this one. It was not just one unit.
And again another validation point for this team.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Sharing absolutely, because that's been something that we've seen. You know, oh,
the defense plays really well one game with the offense
struggles or vice versa, and it hasn't been where everybody
is clicking on the same cylinder at the same time.
And that's what, like you said, that's what this fourth
quarter did. And for the guys to come out defensively,
and it's been a rough year for them defensively, you know,
they've had so many injuries and they've struggled to get
stops when they need to get off the field, and
(04:53):
for Mike Jackson to come up there with that awesome
pass breakup to seal the deal was it was great
to see it happen that way. And then I think
my the thing I love the best, Yeshua, was the
victory formation. Kneel down. To see Bryce Young and then
be able to do that was just it was so
much fun because he's never been able to do that here,
so that was a lot of fun. But yeah, it
was great to see the defense do their part, and
(05:14):
that's what that's something they stress and Coach Canal stresses
every single week. Do your job, be yr one eleven.
Just do your part and everything will fall into place.
And everybody was able to do that yesterday, particularly in
the fourth quarter, to come out with the w at
the end.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I completely agree. So we've got to talk about I
really want to talk about these.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Rookies, so the offensive rookies and then also Demanie Richardson
what a game he had. But you were talking about
one of your favorite moments of you know, seeing that
victory formation and just getting to watch it. One of
my favorite moments was that drive that ultimately culminated in
the Xavier Lagette touchdowns. So you know, Jalen Coker had
(05:50):
that big play, Bryce got it to Jalen Coker. Then
Bryce made that a ten yard run and he like
broke a tackle and then they were at the two
yard line an Xavier leget that was that touchdown on
those on the Jalen Coker pass and then on the
Xavier leget touchdown. They had trips to the left on
(06:10):
the first play and it was Jatavian Sanders, Xavier Legett,
and Jalen Coker. And then on the touchdown play it
was trips to the right with those three guys as well.
Jatavian Sanders was at the top of that triangle of
course blocking and man, that is what you want to see, right, Sharon,
I mean those rookies, and then Jatavian Sanders also had
a great game. So all three of those guys making
(06:31):
some big plays. We know Excel had that had that
interception where you know he caught it and then the
ball got away from him. But man, it was so
fun to watch those three guys. They sit beside each
other on the benches, and that just felt like what
an example of what they are trying to build here
and specifically with with not just young guys, but but
(06:52):
draft picks.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Well except in the case of.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Exactly Okay, but I'll be quiet now and I want
to hear what you think about it. But as you
can tell, that just really excited me.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
No, I'm right there with you because I mean these
are guys that I mean Jayalen Cooker. They were high
on him in the preseason, but like you said, he
was undrafted and nobody would they were They were trying to,
you know, let's see if we can hide him over
here on the practice squad and have nobody snag him,
because they they liked what they saw in him, so
they wanted to be able to keep him around. The
fact that he has worked his way up to a
you know, a spot here on this fifty three rand roster,
and a valuable spot, I mean, he gets plenty of
(07:22):
meaningful reps. Now, yeah, but these guys, I mean they
are having very meaningful reps and making plays as rookies,
which not everybody is able to do. And we have
so many of them making plays, which is which is
so much fun. And these guys they're learning every week.
They were really high. I mean, obviously, when you're a
high draft pick like Xavier Leaguet was, you know, you're
(07:43):
you're expected to come in and do well. But then
these other guys are just showing up. And that's Coach
Canal started that way back in the preseason. He said,
We're going to give these guys meaningful reps early, particularly
in the preseason, and as you need to to get
them to come along. He said, it'll pay dividends down
the road. And it certainly is. These guys are taking
advantage of their opportunities. They are making plays, and Dave
(08:04):
Kanal said, we trust them. That's the big thing too
here and now, is that the quarterbacks be at Andy Dalton,
be at Brys Young. They trust that these receivers and
Titans and Jatavian centers that they're going to go out
run the routs are supposed to run and they're going
to make the play when it comes to them, and
that's just huge. And then they're gaining confidence, they're gaining
confidence in each other, and it's just so much fun
(08:24):
to watch and it's it's it's great, and it bodes
so well for the future of this franchise to have
that many players having meaningful impacts on a game this
and we're in a heck, we're hardly halfway through the season,
so there's a lot of football ups we played this
year and they're already playing so well. So the sky's
the limit for those guys.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
I completely agree, and you know, we might see Adam
Thielen Pack next week. And as you with with Adam
feeling out and Deontay Johnson traded, what a big week
for these guys. And I really was happy for Jatavian
Sanders because, as you said, he's one of these guys
that's been coming on, coming on, and then for him
to have two of those big catches, it was just
(09:04):
it was really great to see and like you said,
just confidence building and I think we'll see a lot
more of that from him. Also, Sharon, I want to
talk about, you know, our little sideline insider things. So
xavierly Gat went out, he went into the locker room
in the first half because of his left wrist was
(09:24):
bothering him, and he came off of this play where
he made a catch and he was really he looked
to be really in pain. And you know, I always
want to respect players injuries and privacy. You know, we
really have to ride that line as sideline reporters. But
you know, I talked about it on the broadcast. He
went into the tunnel, so it was very clear. And
then also he had before the end of the first half,
(09:45):
he had an injury designation which was questionable with a
hand and Sharon, I thought we'd maybe talk through this
a little bit about what that means and the fact
that he came back.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
So so, in the.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
NFL, you have, of obviously, no designation means that you're
out there on the field in game or if you
you know, say you banged up your shoulder, whatnot. We
go and ask about it to the PR person. They say, no,
he has no designation. That means he's going to come
back out and play. Then there's questionable, which means you
know what it says, doubtful, which also means exactly what
(10:19):
it says, and then out.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
And those are the designations.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
You know, they go through specifically through a PR person
on our sidelines, and you can see with your eyes
if something is going on, if someone goes to the
injury tent, if someone has to get attention by a
trainer or by a doctor. But the official designation comes
from the PR stuff. It comes from the trainers and
then the PR staff, and then we are able to
(10:43):
relay that.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
To the fans.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
So so, but when Sharon, as you know, when someone
has a questionable designation, in my experience, a lot of
times they.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Don't come back, and it is not.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Any football injury is hard, and it's not for me
to say, wow, that's great that he came back, or wow,
that's you know, whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
But his hand was really really hurting him.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
And so I went into the tunnel at the half,
and I will be honest, I did not expect him
to have his helmet and to come out of there,
because you know, as I said, he was in pain,
questionable to return, and Sharon, he had that helmet and
he was ready to go right out of that tunnel
in the second half. And again, it is not for
me to say that's awesome or you know, we do
not know the extent of that pain. But I have
(11:30):
to say, watching him before the first half ended, with
the way he was holding his hand and then getting
that questionable designation, I did not anticipate him coming back
out on the field.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Yeah. And not only did he come back out, he
played great. I mean he's yes, I've said this before.
You know, sometimes you pass him in the locker room
and you're like, oh my gosh, he looks like a linebacker.
I mean he's a big boy. He's big, he's strong,
he's built. He is not you know, like some tall,
lanky receiver or something like that. He is he has
built like a defensive player, he really is, and he
plays like when does a extent too, because he's tough
(12:02):
and obviously to come back out with that with that
handed you like he said, we don't know exactly the
extent of what that was or what kind of pain
he was in, but uh, you know, I mean, that's
that's awesome that he was able to come back out
and make the kind of impact he did in spite
of being injured, and so that it's always fun when
a guy does come back out because you don't I
agree with you that it seems like when they're question
(12:22):
where they rarely come back in the game because it's
just a question mark as you would as as an indicates, so,
but a lot of times they do not return. So
for him to come back out and play well and
be able to have such a great impact was really amazing.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
And as we said earlier in this season, when Luke
Keigley can't get over talking about.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
How big you are and how you can truck people.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Then that means that your size, you know, he's, like
you said, out of the ordinary for your position. Yeah,
it's and he's just as we know, he's just a character.
We saw him writing do La Bill for that celebration,
we saw everyone else getting in on it. So it's
so fun to watch those guys. And as we said,
throwing Demani Richardson, who led the team in tackles for
(13:08):
the second straight game his first two starts of his career.
You know, he's a defensive rookie, but just another rookie
who is who is playing really well when his number
is called, and it is so exciting for these young
guys and for the fans.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Yeah, absolutely, And like you said, for we're all excited.
Those guys are really excited. Like every week you go
in there and you talk to Jadaean or to Davian
or you to go talk to Trevin Wallace. He's always
got just a huge smile on his space. He's always
so happy, and Demani too, and Show Smith Wade. These guys,
they're so excited to be able to go out and
have success and just be in the NFL. And like
(13:44):
Trevon told me, he's like, Hey, I'm just happy to
wake up in the morning and be out here playing
the game I love and it's just so much fun.
How could you not be happy even if they're in
a losing streak or whatever they were at the time.
So these guys are are really excited and they're they're
learning so much. That's what I love too. There you
see them talking with you see it on the sidelines too.
They're always they come off the field and they go
(14:04):
right over to their position groups and they're sitting there
talking with the coaches, they're talking with the veteran guys.
They just are like just sponges, just absorbing all of
that knowledge, absorbing all of that information. Davian Clowney in
particular on the defense is always one out there who's
really trying to talk to guys up and down the defense,
not just you know, certain position groups. So it's fun
to see them take that knowledge and do something with
(14:26):
it and come out better every week. But with Demani
to lead the team and tackles his two starts, Wow,
I mean that's pretty impressive.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
It is.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
It absolutely is so great victory Monday, great victory against
the Saints, certainly one that I know the Panthers are
hoping to build on with momentum because now everyone is
going to Germany and so Sharon, you are going to
you will be the sideline reporter for this game, which
is so exciting, and I thought so because I'm not going.
(14:56):
I have not been a part of the preparations. The
difference between going to a road game and let's say
La versus going to this this game in Germany where
the Panthers are technically the home team. So I'm hoping
you can talk us through what this has kind of
looked like. Has it looked any different as as the
team got, you know, as the as the operations people
(15:18):
prepare you all or send out instructions or is it
kind of just like a normal road game.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Well, so far, there's not been a whole lot different,
to be honest with you, except for we did have
to get our passports in quite a while ago, and
they actually had the folks from the I guess TSA
or wherever they were from. They came to the they
came to the stadium over the summer and got everybody's
passports done and ready, and then I had to turn
my passport in several weeks ago, so I don't have
(15:44):
it in my position anymore. They apparently did not know this. Yeah, yeah,
they they apparently, As as our producer David Langton told me.
He said, they they hold on to it, they give
it to you when you need it, and then they
take it right back again. They don't want anybody to
lose their passports when you're over there, so tart up
to it. So so yeah, so they make sure and
take good care of our passports for us. So we've
we've gotten that. We've also gotten a security video, a
(16:05):
whole series of like slides and stuff from the NFL
preparing us for being in a foreign country and what
to look out for in terms of, you know, things
like pickpockets and stuff like that, and don't go out
at night by yourself and try to tell your colleagues
where you're going and what you're you know, what kind
of things you're planning. So we've gotten that kind of
stuff in terms of preparing for it. But other than that,
I mean, it's Monday, and you know, I know that
(16:27):
at some point here in the week we'll get our
walking papers as to what time we're going to be
leaving on Thursday to head over there. But it's it's
fairly similar so far anyway with what we've been alerted
to anywa other than the security information and the passport.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Well, I think that's interesting. You know, I didn't know that,
so I think that's all interesting. You had to get
it done in the summer, and I remember hearing, of
course that for the players who have never been out
of the country, they had to start really early in
getting their passports. You know, your picture, your information, all
of that. So what an exciting thing for them to
have that first experience. Oh yeah, be an NFL game
(17:03):
in Germany. But I also love that you don't know
what time you're leaving.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Yeah, I know it's sometimes Thursday. I'm not sure when.
Maybe Thursday evening. I'm guessing since it's an overseas flight.
But yeah, so we'll be leaving at some point on
Thursday to head over there and arrive I guess Friday morning,
and then so we'll have I think they're going to
have a fairly normal practice week this week. I mean today,
what I was gonna ask, Yeah, Victor Meda today off Tomorrow.
Wednesday will be a regular Wednesday. I believe they're going
(17:29):
to have a practice on Thursday before everybody loads up
and goes to the airport, and Friday they'll have some
sort of a walk through situation over there in meetings
and stuff like that, So I think they're trying to
keep it, you know, as regular as possible. The only
thing that's gonna throw a ready for a loop is
trying to sleep on an airplane on Thursday night. But
other than that, they're keeping it as close to a
regular schedule as possible for these guys. So it feels
(17:50):
like a normal week and nothing's totally you know, thrown
awrye just because we're playing in Germany instead of Bank
of America Stadium.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Well, Sharon, as we've talked about on this podcast, you
do not sleep on planes. So how are you no,
I know, I'm like about the overnight How are you
feeling about the overnight flight?
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (18:07):
My god?
Speaker 3 (18:08):
How far is it seven?
Speaker 1 (18:09):
I don't even know, don't look. I think that it's
it's eight or nine or something. My sister flew to
Munich earlier this summer when they ended went on a
European Norway and stuff, and she said it was nine hours.
But that's you a whole lot of sitting on the
tarmac and taxi and that we don't have to do
that quite as much with a charter flight, so it'll
be a little bit shorter than that, but regardless as long,
(18:30):
and it's going to be in the middle of the night,
and so I have I have my books because I'm
a big book person on airplane, so I will have
my books and I'm going to try to force myself
to sleep some so I'm not a complete zombie when
we arrive on Friday morning. So but I'm going to
try to sleep, and but I'm gonna have my books
as my backup just in case I can't get any
shut eye. So we'll see how, hopefully I'm not walking
(18:51):
around totally with my eyelids propt on Friday.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
I'm wishing you a quick and a quick trip with
lots of sleep in it.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Turbulence, no turbulence, and I'm going turbulence.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, a quick, easy, safe flight where you happen to
nod off.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
And we'll see how. We'll have to get an update
on that.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Yeah, I'll have to get an update on that next week. So,
so in Germany, the Panthers are taking on the Giants,
and of course, you know, I know, it's only Monday,
and so if you were on the coaching staff, you'd
be like, I'm still reviewing the film from this past week.
But because you do these excellent scouting reports, what can
you tell us just on a preliminary look at what
(19:31):
the Panthers are going up against with the Giants?
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Well, the Giants are not very good and it's been
a while since they've been very good, and they let
their best player walk in sa Kuan Parkley, who's now
over with the with the Eagles, of course, So making
that incredible catch yesterday, now it's like, what are you thinking?
So the Giants don't have a whole lot of people
that scare you, to be honest with you, they really don't.
They've got Daniel Jones, who, if this is a stat
(19:55):
that I was like astounding to me. He threw his
first touchdown at home yesterday for the first time since
January first of twenty twenty three. So after the twenty
twenty two season, he went the entire season of twenty
twenty three with auth thrown a touchdown pass at home,
which is like crazy, as somebody would said, Oh, the
Chiefs have won two Super Bowls since you threw a touchdown.
Oh my gosh, yes, yeah, so it's crazy. So Daniel
(20:16):
Jones has been struggling. He's been very up and down
he is, you know, he's a lot of people would
like to see him out from there, and so he's
he's struggling. He's got an excellent rookie receiver with Mileak Neighbors.
I mean, he's playing really well. He's probably the highlight
of their team right now. And then of course they've
got a couple of Panthers former Panther players and people
are gonna remember and recognize, starting of course with Brian Burns.
(20:38):
You know who's leading that defense over there. So Brian
Burns is there, but also Amir Smith Marsett, who was
such an exciting, you know, kick return guy here and
also had some some fun plays on offense for us
in the past. So he is up there in New York.
And for the longtime Panthers fans, Chris Manhertz tight end,
he's he's still in the league and he's still up
there with New York as well. So they've got a
(21:00):
few familiar faces. They've got Tiern Tracy is their lead
running back right now, another rookie, So they've got several
rookies that are playing really well for them. So like
the Panthers. So yeah, and Wandel Robinson also at receiver
is playing really well, so they've got they've got some
threats offensively, but they just can't seem to get it
all put together right now. And defensively, they're having a
hard time stopping people. So it's they're two and seven,
(21:22):
they're on a four game losing streak. So life's and
people are not happy in New York, as you might
expect with what that kind of performance from the Giants.
So that that's who we're gonna be facing on Sunday.
So I think this is a very winnable game for
this Panther squad. Is again just like it was with
the Saints, It's a very winnable game. It's theirs for
the taking.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Absolutely, and I think that is something that you know,
there's a clip on the Panthers' Instagram where they are
talking in the locker room after the game and you
hear Dave canal is talking about winning in the fourth quarter,
and then you hear a player saying like, let's go
get this win against the Giants, Let's build on this,
and let's go into the buy with confidence. And I
think that's a I think that is a really great
(22:04):
way to look at it. You know, teams either stack there,
you know, whether they look at it in quarters, so okay,
we got these four coming up or these three, or
however you look at it, you bite off the season
into chunks. And so if you can, if you can
come away with this win in Germany against the Giants,
and then you get to go into your bye week
with that confidence and with this extra rest, I don't know,
(22:27):
I think you're you know, you're you're feeling good, right,
I mean, that's that's a that's a big step forward
in confidence for where this team could be.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Oh absolutely, I mean that would be huge. Just to
stack back to back wins would be would be really, yeah,
really awesome. So yeah, to I think that's what they're
going to be able to do here. I really do.
I think that they're the confidence they got from that
game yesterday. I mean, it's especially the way they were
able to get it done. I mean that just has
got to be a huge confidence builder on you know,
(22:56):
special everything, special teams, offense, devens, all of it, and
it's just got to have them riding high right now
going into what is a winnable game against a struggling
Giants team and then to be able to go over there,
get that done in Munich, and to win two games
in a row, come back and have the bye week
and then hit you a tough stretch of the schedule
coming out of the bye week. That would just do
(23:16):
wonders for this team. I really think it would, especially
for the young players, especially for a guy like Bryce Young,
I mean, and the end of this coaching staff. We
have a lot of young guys on this coaching staff.
I mean, that would just be huge for this team
all the way around to be able to stack back
to back wins and head into the by on a
two game winning streak.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Well, Sharon, I am looking forward to seeing what happens
in this game. As I said, I hope you have
a safe, easy, quick flight filled with lots of sleep.
I cannot wait to hear about Yeah, I wish that
for everybody. I hope everyone comes out of there, the
players especially come out of there very well rested and
ready to go. With that I believe six hour time difference.
(23:55):
But I am so excited to hear and see this
team play in Germany against the Giants and hopefully come
away with another victory Monday. So this has been so
much fun as always I always learned something.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
It's always fun.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
To you know, get our thoughts together and get ready
for the next week.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
So thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
As always, thanks Kristen
