Speaker 1 (00:05):
Appogie Production. Welcome back to Silent Secrets, your gentle guide
into the mysteries of our world. Tonight's story is one
that's fascinated psychologists, spiritualists and skeptics alike. It's about two

(00:32):
little girls in England who might just might have lived
once before. This is the strange case of the Polyck twins.
So as the day falls away, get comfortable, and if
you drift off while we explore this mystery, that's perfectly fine. Hexham, Northumberland,

(01:12):
is a quiet market town in northern England. In the
nineteen fifties, this was the kind of place where nothing
much happened, just green hills, cobbled streets and tight knit families.
Florence and John Pollock lived here with their two daughters, Joanna,

(01:33):
aged eleven and Jacqueline aged six. The girls were full
of energy and love. Joanna was thoughtful and protective and
Jacqueline was silly, affectionate and full of imagination. They played
together constantly and were deeply bonded. Then tragedy. On May five,

(02:08):
nineteen fifty seven, the girls were walking to church when
they were struck by a car. Both died instantly. The
town mourned their parents were devastated. Nothing could ever replace
the daughters they had lost, or so they thought. About

(02:34):
A year later, Florence discovered she was pregnant again. John,
who had developed an interest in reincarnation, became convinced that
Joanna and Jacqueline would return somehow through this new child.
Florence was skeptical, and when the doctors said she was

(02:56):
carrying just one baby, John was quietly disappointed. But on
October fourth, nineteen fifty eight, a surprise, Florence gave birth
to identical twin girls, Jillian and Jennifer. Identical in looks, yes,

(03:19):
but from the start the girls were noticeably different in personality.
Jennifer had a strange birthmark across her forehead in the
same spot that his deceased daughter Jacqueline had a scar.
She also had a similar birthmark on her waist, exactly

(03:42):
like the one Jacqueline had. Even as babies, John insisted
that these were the same souls reborn. Florence was uncomfortable
with the idea, but soon things got even stranger. As toddlers,

(04:10):
the twins began asking for toys that had belonged to
Joanna and Jacqueline, toys they had never seen or been
told about. They knew the names of their deceased sisters dolls.
They asked to play in the park they'd never visited,
but described it in detail. They showed a fear of cars,

(04:34):
especially Jennifer, who would cry out when one came close,
clinging to Florence and saying the car was coming to
get her. Even more bizarre, the girls would sometimes role
play in which Gillian acted like Joanna and Jennifer acted

(04:57):
like Jacqueline, with all the correct age dynamics, preferences and behaviors.
When the family returned to Hexham after years away, the
twins recognized landmarks they shouldn't have known. They pointed out
their old school. They asked about the swing set in

(05:21):
the previous backyard, even though it had been taken down
before they were born. The case caught the attention of

(05:42):
doctor Ian Stevenson, a psychiatrist at the University of Virginia
who had spent years studying reincarnation cases. He interviewed the
Pollock family multiple times and documented dozens of matching behaviors
and memories. Stevenson was careful he wasn't out to prove reincarnation,

(06:09):
but he believed the case deserved serious attention. His conclusion,
while there was no way to prove reincarnation, the Polyck
Twins offered some of the most compelling evidence he'd ever seen.
By the time the girls were about seven, their strange

(06:31):
memories began to fade. They no longer referred to their
past lives. The unusual knowledge and behaviors slowly disappeared. They
grew into ordinary, happy teenagers, with no further signs of
anything unusual. Some skeptics believe the parents, especially John, must

(06:55):
have unintentionally influenced the girls. Maybe they overheard stories picked
up on cues, but many of the memories and details
were never spoken aloud, not in the house, and not
in front of the twins. The Polyck Twins story remains

(07:26):
a mystery. It doesn't prove reincarnation, but it makes us pause.
If consciousness can continue, if memory can pass through lifetimes,
what else might be possible. Maybe it's all coincidence, Maybe

(07:53):
it's the mind making patterns, or maybe just maybe love
finds a way to return. As you drift off to sleep,
let that thought linger gently in your mind. Some things

(08:19):
in this world and maybe the next, remain unexplained. Good Night,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
