Speaker 1 (00:05):
Approach production. Hi, Welcome to Silent Secrets, a bedtime podcast
for curious minds. I'm jay, I'm glad you're here. This

(00:27):
is your time to let go of today, to settle
in and slow down, and let curiosity gently carry you
towards sleep. In each episode, I'm going to share a
true story of the unexplained, not to alarm you, but

(00:47):
to quiet your mind, to remind you that the world
is full of wonder and some things we'll never truly understand.
So take a deep breath, feel your body sink into comfort,
let the weight of the day drift away as we

(01:09):
begin tonight's story. Tonight we explore a story that's more
bizarre than scary, but just strange enough to stir your imagination.

(01:32):
In the nineteen eighties, in the middle of a live
TV broadcast in Chicago, something or someone broke in, not
into the building, not through a door, but straight into
the signal. A masked figure hijacked the television feed with

(02:00):
a grinning, distorted face. No one knew how they did it,
no one knows who it was, and thirty five years later,
no one has ever taken credit. This is the story
of the Max Headroom signal hijack, a mystery that flickered

(02:24):
across the screen and disappeared just as quick. Nineteen eighty seven,
People are unwinding. Families are sitting down to watch Doctor
Who on Channel eleven in Chicago. Back then, TV wasn't

(02:49):
streamed or recorded. If you missed it, he missed it.
So when the signals suddenly cut out during the episode,
viewers were confused. Instead of the their screens filled with statics.

(03:11):
Then a warped image appeared. A man or someone dressed
as one stood in front of a rotating metal background.
His face was covered with a rubber Max Headroom mask.
Max Headroom was a fictional AI character who hosted music

(03:32):
videos and coke commercials in the eighties. But this wasn't
Max Headroom. This was something else. There was no explanation,
no message, just noise, distortion and a grinning, plastic face

(03:55):
moving erratically in silence. And then the signal returned, just
like that, Doctor Who resumed. Viewers were baffled. Some thought

(04:16):
their TV sets were glitching. Others called the TV station.
The staff at the station hadn't seen it. They were
watching from inside the studio, which received a different feed.
They had no idea that anything had gone wrong. So

(04:49):
who was Max Headroom? Before we go any further, let's
pause for a moment. Max Headroom was a pop culture
character from the mid nineteen eighties, an artificial intelligent TV
host known for his glitchy voice, sharp wit, and futuristic visuals.

(05:12):
He was strange but charismatic, speaking stutters and techno slang,
wearing a shiny suit and oversized sunglasses. He was a
symbol of the media and technology merging, almost satirical. So

(05:33):
when someone used his face to hijack a real television signal,
it was eerie in a way that felt too on
the nose, almost like the character had come alive and
stepped through the screen. But it didn't just happen once.

(05:54):
There was a second hijack. A few hours later, at
eleven fifteen pm. It happened again, time on a different station,
Channel nine, during the nightly news. A sports anchor had
finished his segment when the feed suddenly switched. Same thing,

(06:24):
the spinning metal background, the grinning Max Headroom mask, But
this time the hijack lasted longer, almost ninety seconds. The
masked figure spoke this time, but the audio was distorted
high pitched, warbled and difficult to understand. He mentioned the

(06:50):
TV station, said something about nerds mocked TV shows, and
at one point held up a can of pepsi a
jab at Max Headroom's Coca Cola sponsorship. It was chaotic, weird,
and oddly playful. He then bent over, exposing his backside

(07:15):
to the camera while someone offscreen spanked him with a
fly swatter. Then static, and the signal cut back to normal.
The anchor, clearly shaken, said, well, if you're wondering what

(07:37):
just happened, so am I signal. Hijacking like this wasn't easy,
even in the nineteen eighties. To override a TV broadcast.

(07:58):
You needed a powerful antenna and equipment that could outsignal
the station's feed. You had to know the freakque and
see the timing, can be physically close to the broadcast tower.
Experts believe the hijacker may have transmitted from a building
or a rooftop near the tower. It wasn't just a prank.

(08:20):
Took planning gear and technical nohower, but when they investigated,
they came up with nothing, no suspects, no fingerprints, no confessions.
They even offered a hefty fine. One hundred thousand dollars

(08:42):
and possible jail time, but no one ever came forward.
So why would someone go to all this trouble. It
wasn't political, It wasn't a message about war or injustice.

(09:05):
It was just nonsense, a chaotic mix of inside jokes,
pop culture, and creepy gestures. Some say it was a statement,
a protest against corporate media. Others believe it was a
group of bored tech hobbyists showing off their skills. A

(09:28):
few think it was meant to feel dreamlike and confusing
art through disruption, but most agree on one thing. It
was haunting because it felt like something had slipped through
the cracks. Someone had reached through the safe, polished world

(09:48):
of TV and grab and stolen the signal. Over the years,
the Max Headroom hijack has become one of the most
famous unsolved media crimes in US history. Read at threads,
documentar trees, podcasts have all tried to figure it out.

(10:10):
Audio experts cleaned up the distorted speech. Video analysts study
the background, the movements, the props, but no match. The
person behind the mask remains unknown, and no one else
has pulled off anything like it since. So as you

(10:39):
Lye in bed. Think about how strange that is in
the world of digital fingerprints and constant surveillance. How could
someone pull off a high level media hijack twice and
then disappear forever. There's something oddly comforting about that mystery,

(11:03):
that in the cracks of technology, between the static and
the noise, a little mischief can sneak through, untraceable, unexplained,
like a flicker in the night. Thanks for joining me
on silent secrets, where even TV isn't always what it seems.

(11:32):
As you drift off, let your mind wander to the signal,
a mysterious wave that came and went without a trace.
We'll never know who was behind the mask, but maybe
that's the point. Some secrets are meant to stay scrambled.

(11:59):
Good Night, Dre

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
